Kristine Deer grew up as the youngest of three girls in the suburbs of New Jersey in a home with artistic and creative parents, and an “art room” in lieu of a dining room. Her love for fashion and hot yoga started her on the journey to create apparel that was both functional and expressive, initially for herself, and ultimately transforming into a business, K-DEER, known for their iconic bright and colorful striped leggings. Little did Kristine know the community that would grow around K-DEER and the impact that they would have collectively. Back in 2016 I was living a life completely not meant for me. Founded on the basis of people pleasing, I was In the wrong relationship, working a soul draining 9-5 I had no interest in, living somewhere I didn't want to plant roots at...life was backwards. During this time, I found Yoga Girl, aka Rachel Brathen, on Instagram and immediately felt seen. Felt heard. Her captions felt like they were written just for me. I felt like her and I were so similar, and that if she could make her Caribbean dreams come true... I could too. She was on a nation wide yoga tour when I first shared a room with her. There were hundreds of people, so she didn't notice me. Nor did I wait in line to introduce myself after. I walked out of the auditorium after Shavasana in tears... because that was the life I so desperately wanted to live. I wanted to impact and influence that many people to connect back to their hearts. I wanted to travel. I wanted to catch a flight early the next morning to my beautiful home on an island. But I wasn't. I was so far from it, it seemed like it just wouldn't happen in this life. Fast forward five years.... her and I are sharing a podcast stage together, talking about the journey to success. Enjoy. Rachel Brathen is a Swedish native, New York Times best-selling author, serial entrepreneur, and international yoga teacher living in Aruba with her husband Dennis and their baby girl Lea Luna. Rachel is the founder of one of the first online yoga platforms, the now-retired oneOeight.com, which was the most successful crowd-funded yoga project of all time. That platform has since grown and transformed into the Yoga Girl site and is now made up of a vast community of dedicated practitioners from all over the world looking to cultivate balance, create space for inner healing, and to deepen their yoga practice. Rachel is also the owner of Island Yoga - the largest yoga studio in the Caribbean, where she hosts yoga teacher trainings, retreats, workshops, and classes year-round. Giving back to the community has always been at the center of all of Rachel’s initiatives. She runs two non-profit organizations: Sgt. Pepper’s Friends; an animal rescue foundation based in Aruba, and Yoga Girl® Foundation, an organization benefitting women and children in need. While Rachel is a world-renowned teacher, she's down-to-earth, genuine, and wonderfully warm-hearted. This episode was recorded in the Costa Rican jungle at the Envision Festival. During an episode of Yoga Girl: Conversation from the Heart, host Rachel Brathen talked about how society puts this value and pressure for us to remain busy constantly (https://www.yogagirl.com/podcast/conversations-from-the-heart/wherever-you-go-there-you-are). This really resonated with me because it does feel true. You hear phrases like "everyone has value" or "everyone is lovable inherently" but we don't show it. It is this idea that I unpack and explore in this episode. I'd love for you to join and afterwards be sure to comment with any thoughts or questions you may have. Satya is a philanthropist, yoga teacher and Reiki healer, who after 30 days of intensive yoga training had a dream of making jewelry that was both meaningful and gave back to children around the world. Fifteen years ago, she created Satya Jewelry  which creates handcrafted, beautiful and meaningful jewelry, which more importantly has a special meaning in mind — thus starting the movement of incorporating wellness info fashion, which is mainstream today. It is the go-to jewelry brand for celebrities such as Courtney Cox, along with wellness leaders such as Gabby Bernstein, Elena Brower and more). Giving back is an important aspect of Satya’s brand and she donates a percentage of all sales are donated to the Satya Foundation; my 501 (c) organization that has raised over $1 million for children's charities throughout the world. They have also done many collaborations for giving back, including Christy Turlington Burn’s Every Mother Counts, Next For Autism, and an upcoming line with Yoga Girl’s Rachel Brathen.  How did she get in Yoga? Satya has been practicing Yoga for over 30 years now. Her Zen Buddhist father introduced her to yoga, and she fell in love with it. How did she start her business? According to Satya, It's never too late to find your dream. She left a well-paying job after six months to pursue her purpose. She became a Reiki Master, and she had a rough time charging for her services. She decided to have a teacher's training in the Bahamas, and that's where she found the inspiration to start her business. Did you ever feel like a failure for starting your business at 40? Absolutely! She have had so many careers, but the most important thing is she finally she found something she loves. What steps did you take into entrepreneurship? Satya did not have a business plan. All she had was passion. How important is it to have pure intentions?  150%. Satya teaches beautiful mala workshops. They involve setting your plans and how to weave and create a beautiful spiritual necklace of your own with infusing an intention of yours and always bring into the meditation. Do you think owning and starting this business has taught you about yourself? Satya has learned a lot about herself through her business, and it has helped her pinpoint areas that need a change in her life. What does your foundation do? The foundation is involved working with non-profit organizations. The first projects involved teaching kids yoga and more. This year she has worked on a few projects which include an elephant sanctuary and a foundation that helps people with autism. She has worked with Christy Turlington. She has a foundation that allows mothers and children's all-around prenatal care and birthing all around the globe. Being a trained social worker, did Satya ever think this is what social work looks like? No! We are accustomed to putting everything in a small box. Satya did not have an idea that she would turn out to be this great. From a strategic perspective in your business, what do you think has worked best? Being open and flexible, being able to work the challenges. As a social worker, you're trained to navigate problems.  Did you know you were entrepreneurial? It runs in my genes. My parents and siblings are entrepreneurs, and so were my grandparents. What's your favorite jewelry? My favorite is, of course, the mala. They're prayer beads. I love them because they when they're weighted of course we use genuine stones. So the weight of them keeps me grounded throughout the day. What's a truth that you want to spread right now? The truth of loving-kindness. What's the best advice you have ever received? Do not go out and get involved again with another person. Fall back in love with God and yourself first. How can you tell that you are loving yourself? I'm a little a lot more compassionate towards who I am. How can we get in touch with you? Website Instagram life coach nyc

I’m thrilled to share this conversation I had with Rachel Brathen. I interviewed her on Instagram Live at the Simon & Schuster offices on her publication day! (For the video, click here.) Rachel is the founder and CEO of Yoga Girl and the author of the New York Times best-selling book also called Yoga Girl. I absolutely loved her new memoir, To Love and Let Go: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Gratitude, about a year in her life in which she "had the most amazing things happen and the most terrible things happen at the same time." For anyone who has ever gone through a loss or who wants inspiration (from someone who has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to dedicate herself to helping millions of others around the world in a spiritual, soulful way), this book is for you. As she quotes in the book, "I believe in the good things coming, coming, coming....."

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2019 14:46

Well, let me tell you about this cracked screen situation. Recently I had the first time ever experience of cracking my cell phone screen. Some might say I have been lucky to have gone this long without cracking one – especially as much as I use this ever-present device in all aspects of my life. The funny thing was that I had a protective shield on the screen and for about a week because I didn't want to know whether it was the shield or actual screen that was broken, I tried to ignore the situation. Finally, one day I found myself working with a client sharing some Instagram tips and tools and of course needed to use my phone to effectively do so. In that moment I realized how silly it was that I was not facing my cracked screen. As soon as she left I pulled the shield off and sure enough it was the shield that was cracked not the phone. Cost to replace? $5.99. The irritation it took away from having to look constantly at a cracked screen – priceless. I share this with you today because it is a reflection of how we can put up with so many things in fear of what “might happen” if we try and fix the problem. Putting up with things in our life, or world, that we could have been made so much better by making the extra effort. Of course, adding to the effort, is the courage to face the problem or situation by taking the lead to fix the problem. Embracing our own overall leadership skill sets can be like that as we look at what we like and don't like in other people's leadership styles. We can fear fully taking the leadership reins in our business or community in fear that we will uncover something that we can't handle or control. While there are many ways to look at leadership. Yesterday in an Instagram story I heard the simple words, “Do no harm - take no sh*t”, as shared in today's quote by Yoga Girl aka Rachel Brathen on the topic of you being you. This got my attention as I thought wow, that's leadership in a nutshell. Because after all leadership actually starts from deep within each of us as we look at doing good in the world. From within our cracked beings sits the jewel, the flower of our greatest selves and the gifts we can give to others in the process. Add in a few other essential leadership ingredients and you are heading towards being the leader that you would want at the helm of your business, community, country or even your own inner family. On today's podcast I share some of the gems from this past weeks Growth Mastermind on the Authentic Leader that I facilitated. This includes the 5 Leadership Essentials of Communicator, Peacekeeper, Motivator, Visionary, and Caregiver. What have you been putting up with for too long that a little tenacity and leadership skills could take care of for you and the world around you? Break free from the chains that bind you and make it a great week ahead!

Sexual misconduct in the yoga community isn't new. But the evolving #metoo and #timesup movements have brought to light the magnitude of the problem for women from all walks of life -- including within the yoga world. (Rachel Brathen collected more than 300 of them last year). It's opened an important dialogue about how to put an end to sexual misconduct and other abuses of power within the yoga community. There are a few thoughtful yoga teachers leading the way, and I talked with two of them in this week's episode: Judith Hanson Lasater and Mary Taylor. Judith and Mary, with AZIAM founder Alanna Zabel, shared their stories recently with Yoga Journal. Now, they're talking with me about what they feel should be the next steps for healing. We talk about:* The history of ethical standards for yoga teachers and how both Judith and Mary believe these standards should evolve in the future* How the vocation of yoga teacher has changed through the years as yoga has become more commercial* Why it's important for teachers to create an environment where students feel safe and empowered to say "no" * Judith's tip for how to listen to your body to discern if something is wrong* Practical steps yoga teachers can take to further the discussion, support students who have been victimized to share their stories, and create awareness aboutt sexual abuse in the yoga community* Mary's perspective on what's happening in the Ashtanga community on the heels of abuse allegations against founder Pattabhi Jois Show notes: http://jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode93/ SHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS1. You might know Rachel Brathen as "Yoga Girl" on Instagram -- she's one of the original yoga insta-stars and has 2 million followers. Two million! That's crazay! And yet, despite this quick rise to fame, Rachel is incredibly down-to-earth and not afraid to say that the superficial side of social media can suck the life out of a person from time to time. I wanted to know what makes Rachel tick, so I tried to dig into how she's become the teacher (and student) she is today. Social Entrepreneur Olivia Rothschild always wanted to be of service. Growing up in multiple countries and traveling widely, she learned to be open-minded and curious. She said yes to opportunities that were presented to her. You can see these traits in her work today as a co-founder of 109World, a platform for positive change. 109World is built on 7 passions: water, children, the environment, education, women, food and animals. These passions are interconnected. In a time when trust in institutions is at an all-time low, Olivia, along with Rachel Brathen, known on Instagram as @yoga_girl, have a formula for success. Show up as your authentic self. Follow your passions. Live a transparent life, shared on social media. Inspire others, attracting a tribe. Use your influence to do good. Create shared-value projects that you can do together. Change the world. 109World is inspiring others to share in their passions through project-based trips. For example, in April they are traveling to Nicaragua to build a water distribution system. Key quotes from the interview: “I don’t think I ever took the decision of going where I am now. It’s just that I took opportunities that came along.” “I saw her development and her Instagram booming and her followers inspired every day by her words and her acts – and making changes in their lives.” “Creating shared value: for me it’s about looking at what you have and using that to do good. And what does Rachel have? She’s got this amazing influence. And she inspires people. So, what can we do with that? She does yoga. What can we do with that? She has Instagram. What can we do with that? It’s about looking at what we already have, and putting that together.” “I think our generation really needs a purpose to everything. And when we get that, that’s when we reach happiness. That’s where we feel wellbeing.” “Imagine if people can go somewhere for their own wellbeing but at the same time contribute to others.” “The ideas mostly came while we were out walking the dogs. That’s where the good stuff really came about.” “Instagram is our core way of communicating. That’s how we get people engaged, by showing what we’re doing. I think social media, especially Instagram, lets people be transparent. That’s what we aim to do. We aim to have a complete open dialog with people.” “You have to remind yourself constantly, where was I going when this problem arose? Just get back to that. “ “Surround yourself with people you like, that you share values with. That will help you trust, and trust will get you everywhere.” Resources: eBook: Five Key Traits of Successful Social Entrepreneurs: http://tonyloyd.com/socent Try Audible and Receive Two Free Audiobooks: http://tonyloyd.com/books 109World: https://www.109world.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/109world/ Olivia on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/orothschild Rachel (@yoga_girl) on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yoga_girl/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/109world Twitter: https://twitter.com/109tweets Harvard Business Review article by Michael Porter on Shared Value: https://hbr.org/2011/01/the-big-idea-creating-shared-value
