Hi all! This week I'm chatting with one of my very good friends Maria Elena Alberson! We have been friends for over a decade and have had many talks about Minimalism over the years. I'm excited to share our conversation with you this week and hope you might get inspired to look into some of these tools. Maria tells stories of running away to Mexico and learning about simple necessities from her grandfather, and the mild disaster when she decided to become a minimalist while still living with her parents. Maria shares about how living a minimalistic lifestyle has helped her be more mindful about everything from the clothing and household items she purchases, to the people she chooses to have in her life. As friends do, we follow a few rabbit trails and have a few laughs, I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and I hope you will too! It may not be spring quite yet around here, but spring cleaning and purging is in the air for me and some of my friends. In this episode, my friend Stephanie Taylor shares about her family's journey into a minimalistic lifestyle over the past few years - going from an average-sized living space to one half as small! It's an adventure story you don't want to miss. One of my favorite quotes that anchored our chat is from author Joshua Becker, who defines minimalism as "the intentional promotion of things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from them." From tips to get started to finding your motivation to making hard lifestyle changes as a family, you'll find oodles of solid food for thought on living simply in this episode. I loved soaking up all the wisdom Stephanie has learned, especially how to avoid the many distractions from living a purposeful and peaceful life and how to model minimalist habits for our children. I hope you enjoy it too! We are are here today to discuss the concept of minimalism defined as:Minimalism is all about living with less. This includes less financial burdens such as debt and unnecessary expenses. ... For many minimalists, the philosophy is about getting rid of excess stuff and living life based on experiences rather than worldly possessions. - Christopher MurrayToday on the show we have minimalist Matt D'Avella. Matt directed an amazing documentary called Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. He has also built a massive fanbase of 3.15 million followers interested in minimalism on YouTube. The film examines the many flavors of minimalism by taking the audience inside the lives of minimalists from all walks of life—families, entrepreneurs, architects, artists, journalists, scientists, and even a former Wall Street broker—all of whom are striving to live a meaningful life with less.In so many ways we are binging on all the wrong things and dying of hunger for the things that really matter. We as a society need to stop looking outward for happiness and being to look inward. Material things won't make you happy. Did chasing and sacrificing your precious time and energy trying to obtain "stuff" make you truly happy while you were here? If you die tomorrow does ANY of the material stuff you have matter at all?Matt also directed the new Netflix series The Minimalists: Less Is Now. The series is about how minimalism movement founders and longtime friends Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus share how people's lives can be better with less stuff.Matt and I discuss the power of decluttering your life, using minimalism to help you focus on the important stuff and how material things become owners of us and not the other way around.Beware, this conversation might change the way you look at your life. Enjoy!

Way back in episode 16, we talked about minimalism. Mark talked about how it has positively impacted his life over the past 3 years and Amanda couldn't fully wrap her head around the concept. Fast forward to today and a ton has changed. Recently, Amanda wanted to watch "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things". After we watched it together, Amanda had a much better understanding of what minimalism meant. Then, on January 1, 2021, we watched the brand new film "The Minimalists: Less Is Now". This one inspired Amanda to do even more. Since then, she's started to audit the things in her life and remove the things that don't add value. It's all about intentional living. Journey to Launch presents another bonus episode. This episode features, Cassandra Henry, a Journeyer paying off debt and investing in herself. From Bronx, New York, Cassandra is a first generation Dominican American. At 25 years old she is her family’s breadwinner. As a result, she quickly learned the importance of taking control of her finances and her debt. In episode 111, Cassandra shares how she eliminated credit card debt and boosted her income with side hustles. She taught herself about personal finances by reading, listening to podcasts, and surrounding herself with like-minded people in the Money Launch Club. Don’t forget to sign up for the Journey to Launch free class on August 15th! It’s a virtual meeting so you can join us from anywhere. Learn more about the Money Launch Club here and make sure you join when doors open up again! More About Cassandra Henry Current location (city) Bronx, New York What's your profession? Teacher Cassandra we are glad to have you share your story with Journeyers today. Before we dive into your journey, please tell us more about yourself. My name is Cassandra Henry and I am a powerful, vulnerable and responsible leader. I am 25 years old and a first generation Dominican pursuing a life of abundance. I started my financial independence journey the summer of 2017, after being introduced to Dave Ramsey's 7 Baby Steps and the personal finance podcast, Bigger Pockets Money. I have since increased my income by an extra $10,000, learned the importance of budgeting, and now understand what it means to have an abundant mindset when it comes to money. I am currently on the road to paying off more than $25,000 in student loans. Although there have been many ups and downs, the journey has been worth it. Cassandra what advice would you give other Journeyers who are also on the journey to reach their goals? Invest in yourself! This journey of financial independence has helped me recognize my own worth and realize that I deserve to invest in the goals that I have for myself. Seeking opportunities to grow your network, attending webinars, or even meet-ups that focus on reaching financial independence has definitely helped me get closer to reaching my financial goals. If you want to reach financial independence, it's best to be on the journey in a community with others instead of on your own. Cassandra what's your "Why?" What motivates you to pursue Financial Freedom & Financial Independence? My “Why” is my family. When I was little, my father always reminded me about the importance of saving. Whether it be for clothes or traveling, he would always pull my mother, my sisters and me aside and we would count all of the money we saved together as a family. When he passed away three years ago, I felt unprepared and overwhelmed by the financial responsibilities that had to be addressed. At the time, I was the only breadwinner of the family and although my father taught me how to save, he never taught me how to budget. I realized in order to make sure my family and I don't end up homeless I have to be more aware of my money and where it's going. As the years passed, I developed a desire to reach financial independence to not only provide stability for my mother but also to begin a legacy of wealth within my family. Cassandra what a powerful story. What's something you want to improve or do to help you reach your goals? I want to improve on creating better habits when it comes to maintaining a positive money mindset. When I don't reach a financial goal that I have for myself, I take it pretty hard. I have been trying to surround myself with positive people to help ameliorate the disempowering mindset I get whenever I come across a money issue. Mindset is key to staying positive and building wealth. Cassandra can you share some things you are doing to help move forward on your journey? First off, I have increased my income by $10,000 with side hustles. My journey has reignited my passion for entrepreneurship, and I am in the process of developing a plan for my own business. Also, I increased my network of influencers. One important thing I continue to do is educate myself about financial independence by reading books and listening to several personal finance and motivational podcasts. As a result of what I am doing, my family and friends are also learning the importance of managing money. It’s nice when you get family and friends involved in your journey. Have you had any “wins” since joining the Money Launch Club? How has the Money Launch Club helped you achieve those goals? * Yes, I have. For example, I increased my number of side hustles. After reading Financial Freedom with the Money Launch Club, I began to apply for more side jobs. I now have three side hustles: Online Teacher for VIP kid, after school program assistant, and a tutor. I also created an online bank account for my emergency fund. The Money Launch Club has exposed me to so many different avenues I can take to increase my money. I was able to learn about online bank accounts through conversations in the Money Launch Club. Sounds like you’ve gotten a lot out of being in the Money Launch Club. What do you enjoy most about it? * I have appreciated the opportunity to have Money Launch Club meetups, book clubs, and the speakers! In episode 25 of Life Through a Dram, I talk about how we need to shift the focus from things to people. Marketers and advertisers have led us down a consumer-driven path of needing things to make us feel validated, but as I discuss in this week's show, that seeking of validation is misplaced. Topics on the menu include: How Canada supports the importance of family How we've been forced into a life of consumerism Why validation by social proof isn't validation at all How we can change our mindsets and live more deliberately Why our love of things versus people is taking us down a dangerous path Settle back for a chat about what's truly important in life, and why it's not too late for is to change how we live ours. There are over 50,000 storage facilities in America. Do you own too much stuff? Do you have a closet full of clothes that you don’t wear anymore that you hold on to? We get a rush from buying something new or receiving a package from Amazon, but do we really need what we are buying? Try getting rid of some of the things that you haven’t touched in the past few months.Instead of finding happiness in the things that you have, find happiness in the people you are with and the memories you are making. The memories will stay with you forever; the things in life will fade or go away. The goal is not the finish line. Sim. É condição para o início do jogo: a falta." “A infância de excessos é o netflix sem indicação”. No seu Viés, Malka conta da sua infância inquieta e muito comunicativa. Da sua família com mulheres comunicativas e de como o crochê e o tricô constrói os pontos da sua biografia. The B&E Podcast #109 "Being An Artist A Hundred Years In the Future" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: This episode went in a direction we really didn't expect. We talk about the potential future that the world is going in, and what that means for artists. There's a lot of exciting directions it appears things are going in, and we can begin the future by embodying some of those principles now. POINT #1: "BE AN EXPLORER" -Being an artist means going into places you don't know. Walking into a curiosity with no idea how it's going to go or what's going to happen. Embracing the mystery is an incredible freedom and way to discover. POINT #2: "IT STILL COMES DOWN TO US" -For all of the things that we create, all of the technology and systems we have to support us, all of the advances yet to come, it all still comes down to ourselves and each other. Ultimately this is where artistry arrives no matter what. POINT #3: "CREATE FREEDOM" -How can you create more space, time, room in your life for the deep desires within you? What can you cut out? What doesn't serve you anymore? What is the garbage you tell yourself you need that you actually don't? Colin Wright, a professional author and international speaker, co-founded a publishing company, and travels full-time, moving to a new country every four months or so--that country determined by the votes of his readers! He also blogs. Colin's a minimalist in that he owns very few things and is careful in how he consumes. He tends to buy less, but invest in quality when he does, and trends toward the same in relationships, business endeavors, and just about everything else. He's left-handed, blue-eyed, scary good at Tetris, and can't cook. Episode 422: Ellipses by Colin Wright of Exile Lifestyle and The Minimalists' Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. We watched Minimalism - A Documentary About the Important Things last night and I had a few thoughts that I'll try and keep to a minimum, naturally.
On this Mama Bear Mini episode, co-hosts Tesi and Leslie talk about minimalism and how to intentionally live with less stuff ... even with a big family or kids in tow. Prompted by the new year, Tesi's impending move, and the viewing of Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things, Tesi and Leslie talk about their own consumer habits, both the good and the bad. Together, they brainstorm ideas on how to live a lifestyle free of over-consumption, how to teach children to value human beings, relationships, and interactions over the quest for more stuff, and how to embrace this counter-cultural way of life when it constantly requires swimming upstream. The new year is the perfect time to evaluate your relationship to your things, and to possibly purge, or at least pick up a few new habits. The co-hosts admit that they are nowhere close to figuring out the right balance, but are ready to learn. They conclude the episode with a segment called The Struggle Bus, admitting all the ways that they value, yet fail at, this important idea, and ask listeners to chime in on how they board the struggle bus with their own consumer habits, triumphs, and failures. Want more time, more money, more freedom, and more fun? Then this podcast episode is for you. As a long time Bruce Lee fan, I've always been an advocate for simplicity and minimalism. When things get too complex or I start accumulating too much physical or mental clutter I'm never quite as happy. I'll never forget the first time I saw the movie, Fight Club. It was like an epiphany when I heard Tyler Durden say, "We buy sh*t we don't need with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like." He talked about how the things we own end up owning us. About the ability to let that which does not matter truly slide. My mind was blown and my life changed. Later I read several books on the concept of minimalism, essentialism, and the importance of simplicity and a singular focus, but I'm human and can slip up, which is why it was perfect timing to sit down with Ryan Nicodemus of The Minimalists. He is one of the leading voices in the minimalist world and one of the stars of the new documentary, Minimalism. We talk about how saying no to certain things can open up so much more time, money, freedom and fun in your life. In this episode we discuss: "The Junk Drawer" and his trick to saying no and staying clutter free [2:52]. How he came to the decision to avoid living paycheck to paycheck [4:28]. The reality of selling cell phones and the idea of buying happiness [5:30]. His best friend and the introduction to Minimalism [7:55]. The definition of a packing party and prioritizing needs vs. wants [11:45]. How the blog "theminimalist.com" came to be [13:44]. How removing material items impacted his life [14.22]. Fear, monetizing the blog, and being a barista [16:14]. Traveling while making $21,000 a year [19:33]. The book tour and living in Missoula, Montana [20:55]. His philosophy on "Good Debt" and responsibility [23:52]. The first steps to living a life of minimalism [25:33]. How time is spent, building relationships and a no excuse approach to living a healthy life [29:04]. Avoiding the black hole of social media, advertising and comparing yourself to others [32:51]. His rule before making a purchase [39:53]. His daily rituals and/or routines that he must complete [42:04]. The benefits of developing the habit of mediating [43:18]. What clothing he keeps in his closet and tricks to keep them fresh [44:46]. Life rules that are unique to him [47:59]. The value of digital vs. hard copy book collecting [51:15]. Tips for the entrepreneur to build a great, genuine business and add value [52:43]. What he is inspired by today [54:34]. Selected Links From The Episode Leo Babauta. More about "The Minimalists". Joshua Fields Millburn is one half of The Minimalists. At first glance, people might think the point of minimalism is only to get rid of material possessions: Eliminating. Jettisoning. Extracting. Detaching. Decluttering. Paring down. Letting go. But that’s a mistake. Minimalists don’t focus on having less, less, less; rather, they focus on making room for more: more time, more passion, more experiences, more growth, more contribution, more contentment. More freedom. Clearing the clutter from life’s path helps us make that room. Minimalism is the thing that gets us past the things so we can make room for life’s important things—which actually aren’t things at all. Joshua wasn’t always a minimalist. In late 2009, his mother died and marriage ended (in the same month), and Joshua started questioning everything. That’s when he discovered minimalism. Now, Joshua thinks he owns fewer than 288 things (but he doesn’t actually count his stuff). Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things examines the many flavors of minimalism by taking the audience inside the lives of minimalists from all walks of life—families, entrepreneurs, architects, artists, journalists, scientists, and even a former Wall Street broker—all of whom are striving to live a meaningful life with less. Check out the books, “Let go, change your life TEDxFargo talk” and new The Minimalists Podcast, where they discuss living a meaningful life with less stuff and answer questions from their listeners. In the show I mentioned Colin Wright’s Exile Lifestyle blog and Derek Sivers on Tim Ferriss’s podcast.
Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus have been through a lot together. They grew up together in Dayton, Ohio, both in families that struggled to make ends meet. They went on to climb the corporate ladder together and both made a comfortable living. So when Josh discovered minimalism, a practice in which you rid yourself of excess stuff to focus on personal happiness, it wasn't long before Ryan joined him. Today, the two childhood friends live in Montana and host a podcast, a website and have a film called "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things," all devoted to capturing their minimalism experiences and to help others discover the practice.
Joshua & Ryan share a handful of interviews from their new film, Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things, which hits United States and Canadian theaters starting today, May 24, 2016. Find your nearest showing here. You can also pre-order the online version of the film worldwide here, which includes six hours of bonus content. Detailed show notes: minimalists.com/podcast
