We embark on the first part of a series begun in 2024 by Jack Eidt who joined the artistic residency of Osceola Refetoff, a Canadian-American visual artist and photojournalist, in Antofagasta, Chile. Supported by SACO Cultural Corporation, this residency places a spotlight on the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, and its rich yet troubled history with mining. We delve into the environmental and social impacts of mining in this region, the historical context of Latin American exploitation, and the legacy of colonialism and neoliberal policies. Featuring poignant quotes from local authors and music that reflects Chile's cultural heritage, this episode is a profound exploration of eco-justice, history, and art. This episode sheds light on the difficult working conditions, pollution, and migratory phenomena that have shaped the Atacama's legacy. **Historical Context and Colonial Legacy** We journey through the historical context of mining in the Atacama, from the nitrate boom of the 19th century to the present-day lithium rush. The episode explores the economic motivations and political maneuverings that have led to the region's exploitation, including the devastating impact of colonialism and neoliberal policies. **Interview with Don Victor Loyola** One of the highlights of the episode is an interview with Don Victor Loyola, a former miner who has worked at the municipal museum in Maria Elena. **Indigenous Presence and Geoglyphs** The Atacama Desert is also home to a rich indigenous history, evidenced by the thousands of geoglyphs that dot the landscape. These ancient works of art, created by the region's early inhabitants, offer a glimpse into the spiritual and practical lives of the people who once thrived in this harsh environment. The episode explores the significance of these geoglyphs and their role in the transportation networks that connected ancient South American civilizations. For a woman who never wanted to be a singer, international sensation Maria Elena Infantino has certainly made her mark. And we're thrilled to welcome her to our show today. Maria grew up in Rome to a famously talented family of opera singers. In fact, Maria is  working on a documentary about her father, tenor Luigi Infantino, and we'll talk about that. Maria was schooled in London and studied drama, but upon graduating, her first job wasn't acting, instead, she sang a rendition of “Do You Want To Know A Secret” for the 50th Beatles Anniversary with Shirley Bassey at the Royal Albert Hall. She debuted as a professional actress on the ITV British series “Emmerdale.” She's hosted and produced a one woman show in London as a tribute to her father, and that same year, she was nominated for the 21st annual L.A. Music Awards as best International artist. Maria eventually made her way to Los Angeles, where she lives in addition to Europe. There, she created another one woman show based on legendary French Icon Edith Piaf. She's done so much, and often performs at one of my favorite spots in LA - Vibrato. What I notice most about Maria is how vibrant she is, always on the move and living life to the fullest. Did I mention she speaks five languages fluently? Please find join my discussion with Maria on all video and audio platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE #LittleItalyPodcast and the #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast on all video and audio platforms. Please invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here.

On this episode of Walk in Faith, Craig Syracusa is joined by Director Father Tom Gibbons and Producer Maria Elena Pineda to discuss their latest film, Hollywood Priest, the inspiring story of Father Bud Keiser. Hollywood Priest is an entertaining, provocative and nostalgic, award-winning documentary about a priest who found himself in a different field of ministry: the entertainment industry. The film is narrated by George Newbern (Scandal, Father of the Bride) and features interviews with Hollywood stars: Bob Newhart (Elf, Newhart), Martin Sheen (The West Wing, Apocalypse Now), Marion Ross (Happy Days), John Amos (Roots, Good Times), and Tim Matheson (Fletch, Animal House) to name a few. The movie follows Fr. Ellwood “Bud” Kieser, a Paulist priest who arrived in Los Angeles in 1957. In the 1960s and 70s, Fr. Bud was able to evangelize the culture through the national television series Insight, a show that featured the biggest stars in Hollywood.  But in 1980, when he encountered famine-stricken Africa through a trip with Catholic Relief Services, his ministry and his life-would take a dramatic turn. The movie does not shy away from the struggles and temptations in Fr. Bud's life, which makes him real and relatable and someone to encourage the people of the Church today to be a missionary at the center of public influence.  The nostalgic documentary airs on PBS WORLD this December:Wednesday, December 18 at 7 pm ET | 4 pm PT and 9 pm PTThursday, December 19 at Midnight and 8 am ET | 5 am PTTuesday, December 24 at 5 am ET | 2 am PTWednesday, December 25 at 11 am ET | 8 am PT

Birds seem like a delightful lens through which to view curiosity: Here's a species that lives among us, is literally part of the scenery, but to which many of us are almost entirely blind. But when we choose to be curious about birds, suddenly it's like a whole new universe emerges in our own backyards.  We see things we didn't see before.  We hear things we didn't hear before.  We learn things we didn't know before. You can imagine my delight when I stumbled on María-Elena Montero, president of the DC Bird Alliance. She leapt at the chance to talk about birds--as well as some of the curiosity practices and life lessons to be learned from observing our avian friends. In this episode, we interview María Elena Gutiérrez, daughter of a Spanish dad and American mother, who grew up in the US, went to UT Austin, became a dual immersion teacher, and is raising two bilingual daughters. Given that our children have similar profiles, we allow ourselves to imagine that our children will be just as bilingual and confident as Maria Elena is! We discuss her dad's quizzing methods, maintaining Spanish traditions in the US, learning to read and write, using (peninsular) Spanish in public, visiting Madrid, family language practices, teaching at a bilingual school, and so much more in this jam-packed episode.

I'm joined this week by Thomas Doherty, Brandeis professor and author of Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939, and Maria Elena de las Carreras, assistant professor at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television, to talk about the recent restoration and Blu-ray release of two documentaries by Herbert Kline: Crisis: A Film of ‘The Nazi Way' and Lights Out in Europe. Doherty and de las Carreras provided commentary tracks on the films and were kind enough to join me to discuss the historical import and context of these two important films, which chronicled the German annexation of Czechoslovakia and the beginning of Hitler's assault on Poland. Both movies are available on one Blu-ray directly from Flicker Alley (or Amazon), and they are must-owns for folks interested both in documentary film from the period and World War Two more broadly; I'd heard of Crisis before but had never seen it, and it was a real treat to finally get to watch it.
