GUEST BIO: henry bronchtein Henry Bronchtein was born and raised in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of three sons of a cab-driver father and a homemaker. Henry attended New York University's Tisch School of The Arts to study filmmaking. Perhaps his first big break was working on Raging Bull (1980), as the apprentice assistant director to fellow NYU alumnus, Martin Scorsese. "As a child I was an avid reader, devouring every novel and every comic book put in front of me. I am a member of the first generation to be raised on television. Growing up my favorite shows were Rod Serling 's The Twilight Zone (1959), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), I Love Lucy (1951), and The Honeymooners (1955). I particularly loved Jackie Gleason''s vision of the working-class life of a bus driver living in Bensonhurst. It not only made me laugh it seemed to illustrate and illuminate my life. "When I was sick, my mother would go to the corner candy store and buy every comic book on the stand for me. She would install me on the living room couch, in front of the TV with them. There I'd lay with a blanket, a pillow and a glass of hot tea laced with a teaspoon of cognac; this was the prescription for healing. I would rest there for hours, reading and watching television, engrossed in the worlds of drama and comedy. At an early age I experienced their ability to reach me in important ways." ### For over 35 years, Beth Kushnick has created character-driven settings for countless award-winning television series and feature films. Welcome to the Season 6 Premiere of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! We kick off the new season with a fantastic interview with Production Designer and Beth collaborator, Michael Fitzgerald. From his teenage days interning at Shakespeare Santa Cruz to his collaborations with Beth on Rare Objects and Starz's Run The World and, to most recently, working on Disney's fantastic 2024 film, Out of My Mind, Michael has seemingly done it all in the business. We are so lucky for him to bring us his love of production design and his boundless passion and creativity. A must listen to episode to begin the new season! The Interview with Michael begins at Time Code: 6:06 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities. Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. Happy Emmy voting day! Before casting your vote, treat yourself to one last listen. I'm thrilled to have spoken with Production Designers Steve Morden and James Yarnell, along with Set Decorator John Sparano, about their Emmy-nominated special, "Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic." They share their incredible experiences and stories of transforming a grand vision into reality, honoring the legendary Dick Van Dyke in this remarkable variety special. Celebrating the life of a legend like Dick Van Dyke was no small feat, especially within the tight time frame provided. Yet, this challenge offered a unique opportunity to recreate iconic sets and decor from Dick's illustrious career. From meticulously replicating the "Dick Van Dyke Show" set—right down to one of the original lamps—to creating a stage that splits down the center to accommodate various performances celebrating his storied career, the team went above and beyond. At 98 years old, Dick Van Dyke was visibly moved by the faithful recreation of his former workplace. For designers and decorators, this heartfelt reaction is the highest compliment they could receive. Are you a fan of TV and film production? The next sequel we will be discussing is "House II: The Second Story". For it, I chatted with Set Decorator Don Diers. Don has worn many hats throughout his career as a Production Assistant, Art Department, and Art Director, but this career was meant to be from a young age. We talked about building haunted houses with his brother, UCLA, Improv, Bio-Dome, The Muppets, how it's set decorator and not set director (link to them below), and lots more. Don was kind enough to send me a hat and even a petty cash envelope from a studio. Great chat! On this episode I speak with Set Decorator Alison Harvey about the epic Netflix series “The Crown” Having been on the project for over 8 years this final season holds a special place in telling the life of Queen Elizabeth. This final season included sets that depicted the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, the deaths of Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles and more. We talk about the color pallant of the decor changing over the seasons, some of the hardest sets to decorate and giving this amazing series a glorious set to end on.
In this episode of the Decorating Pages I speak with one of my favorite Production Designers David Gropman. We speak about his captivating design of the limited series "Ripley." Based on Patricia Highsmith's dark, thrilling novel, the series spans eight episodes on Netflix, and dazzles with over 200 sets. We focus on the psychological impact of set design on character spaces like details in Tom's apartment and the meticulously crafted spaces in Dickie's Villa and how they contribute to the story. And we praise Set Decorator, Alessandra Querzola's set details from unfinished Caravaggio paintings to carefully chosen leather chairs. David also discusses the logistical hurdles they faced, especially those brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, and location scouting all over Italy. Are you a fan of TV and film production? This week we are talking about Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver. This sequel introduced us to other homicidal baked goods. This one had us talking about the easiness of time travel, the lack of security in prison, the Roller Disco Championships, the odd people in history who are time-traveled to the end fight scene, and more. Gingerdead Man has some solid one-liners and we discussed him vs Jack Frost. Fun one to discuss. Watch the unedited review at sequelsonly.com/GDM3 I had AI write a script for Jack Frost vs Gingerdead Man 3. You can read it here sequelsonly.com/jackfrostvsgdm The next sequel we are discussing is a sequel that might have the greatest sequel title ever with "House 2: The Second Story." For It, I chatted with Set Decorator Don Diers. Don's story of getting put into the Art Department all happened because he left out his drawing while working in the office on a movie, that movie was A Nightmare on Elm Street. We talked about what a Set Decorator does, his time at UCLA with the likes of Tim Robbins and former guest Lee Arenberg, working on Bio-Dome, The Muppets, and a ton more. Don mailed me a hat from Tenacious D's Pick of Destiny movie. Great guy and a great chat. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 86 - DIANNA FREAS - SET DECORATOR On this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we're joined by set decorator Dianna Freas (FOR ALL MANKIND, LONE STAR, THUNDERHEART). Studying illustration and fine arts at Syracuse and Parsons, she later attended NYU and found her skills well suited to set design. After an early career period working as a co-production designer alongside husband and production designer Dan Bishop, Dianna transitioned to set decoration full time. Throughout the episode, Dianna defines some of the myriad of roles within the art and set decoration departments. What are lead men? How does she work with a buyer? What does the set decoration coordinator typically oversee? Who keeps the books? Who's responsible for that lamp? The demarcations are many, the responsibilities are numerous, and Dianna maps it all out for us with clarity. We later extoll the virtue of flexibility, and Dianna gives advice to anyone looking to break into the art department. - This episode is sponsored by Godox & the Dallas Film Commission

On this episode, I speak with Production Designer Mark Ricker and Set Decorator Cherish Hale. FX's Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is an eight episode limited series based on the best-selling book “Capote‘s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era" by Lawrence Leamer. (A book I devoured over last summer). The sets that Mark and Cherish create are lush, glamorous and enchanting. They previously collaborated on “Escape from Dennemora” and the Netflix series “Halston” and again their latest work is simply stunning. I'm a huge fan of Mark's work. I must have watched “Julie & Julia” a million times! Cherish has been a Set Decorator for more than 25 years and has Emmy, ADG and SDSA nominations and we both went to the same college! Small world!
