In this episode of the Sportlight Podcast, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith revisit a powerful lesson from Paralympian and former BYU football player Jeff Griffin. After a tragic accident ended Jeff's dream of playing football, he learned that resilience is not always about refusing to quit—it is sometimes about having the courage to redirect your energy and dream a new dream. This episode is especially meaningful for athletes facing graduation, transition, disappointment, or the closing of a chapter.Key Takeaways Resilience sometimes means redirecting, not quitting. When one door closes, the challenge is to take the lessons, discipline, and strength you gained and put them toward something new. Some dreams have a shelf life.Athletic careers, seasons, and chapters eventually end, but the growth from them can last forever. The lessons of sports are not reserved for stars.Every athlete can learn discipline, sacrifice, teamwork, toughness, and how to pursue a worthy goal. Don't stop dreaming just because one dream ends.A closed door may be the beginning of a better chapter. Where your focus goes, your energy flows.Part of maturity is deciding where your energy belongs next.Chapter Timestamps00:32:17 — Introduction to the Episode Shad and Dustin introduce the format and the focus on powerful clips from past guests.00:32:55 — Jeff Griffin's Story Shad introduces Jeff Griffin, a former BYU football player and Paralympian whose life changed after a 40-foot fall.00:34:22 — When a Dream Ends The discussion turns to athletes graduating or facing the end of their playing careers.00:38:53 — Dreaming a New Dream Shad introduces the central idea: resilience includes knowing when to dream a new dream.00:39:35 — Is Redirecting the Same as Quitting? Episode 82: The New Dream SchoolsWith Jeff SelingoAvailable November 18, 2025What is a “Dream School?” Almost since the college admissions process began, students have had ideas about where they dream they'll end up after high school, and increasingly, those “dream schools” have existed on a very short list of what we think of as prestigious, name-brand institutions. But what if we're wrong about that list? What if everything we think we know about the factors that make a college great has been misguided? Higher education expert Jeff Selingo joins host Debra Wilson for a frank discussion of what needs to change in our approach to college admissions, and his new book, Dream School.Guest: Jeff SelingoResources, Transcript, and Expanded Show NotesIn This Episode:“I want to bring back some normalcy to high school so that not everything is about, not everything you do is about getting into college and into the right college, that you're doing things because you want to challenge yourself. You enjoy them, you want to try new things out…There's so much pressure around me to apply to a certain set of schools, and I wanna change that conversation.” (6:08)“The November 1 deadlines, the October 15th deadlines now, even earlier deadlines, has just moved up the entire college search process now really into the junior year. And then now what used to happen in the junior year is happening in the sophomore year. So you're not even getting through half of high school without really thinking about college.” (11:33)“I mean, the big unknown here, Debra, is the role of AI in the job market. What are the jobs of the future really going to be and what are they going to need? What are the skill sets they're going to need? It was pretty certain over the last 10 years that we've seen, one of the reasons why liberal arts colleges have kind of gone out of favor is because we've seen a huge shift in majors to the business and STEM because parents thought that's where the jobs were…Now parents are asking, huh, what is the, now what's the next major? And by the way, maybe this brings the liberal arts back into vogue and maybe the liberal arts institutions with their ability to have a mix of problem solving and communication and critical thinking and bring in hands-on learning to that, that might bring them back in a way that we didn't quite expect.” (34:14)Related Episodes: 76; 74; 63; 44; 36; 29; 22 Hosted on Acast. In episode #139 of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we tackle a tough moment many athletes face, the heartbreak of being cut from a team. Whether you’ve just experienced this setback or are coaching athletes who have, this episode is for you. We explore how to respond with resilience, work ethic, and perseverance, using the stories of remarkable athletes like Doug Meechum, Elsie Murphy, and Jeff Griffin. Key Takeaways: Respond with Work – Doug Meechum shares his story of being cut from his high school team, but instead of giving up, he went to work, got feedback, and returned the next year to earn a spot. As he puts it, “Go to work and make it so they can’t cut you next year.” Resilience is about turning setbacks into motivation and putting in the effort to prove yourself. Dream a New Dream – When Elsie Murphy faced rejection for four years in a row, she didn’t let it define her. Instead, she shifted her focus to become an equipment manager, earning a scholarship and a career in athletics. Similarly, Jeff Griffin, after a life-changing injury, redirected his focus and became a Paralympian. When one dream ends, you can always create a new one and continue to apply your work ethic to something else meaningful. Failure is Not Final – As Michael Jordan famously said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots… I’ve failed over and over again in my life, and that’s why I succeed.” Failure is part of the journey, but it’s how you respond that defines your future success. Whether you keep working or dream a new dream, resilience and perseverance will always lead you to the next step. This episode is a powerful reminder that setbacks are not the end. They are opportunities to rise, to redirect your efforts, and to keep pushing toward your goals, no matter what the road ahead looks like. For the past five years, a small group of Silicon Valley investors has spent nearly a billion dollars quietly buying up over 50,000 acres of farmland in northern California. The goal? To create an ambitious new California dream city, something that hasn't been done in America for over a century. The California Forever project aims to create a livable, workable, walkable city that puts working families at the heart of its design, creating new housing for up to 400,000 people. Skeptics abound, but could this be the solution to one of California's most intractable problems? The city's designated architect, urban planner Gabriel Metcalf, joins The Excerpt to discuss the hurdles and possibilities of developing an entirely new city.
