Redefining the American Landscape: Project 2025's Ambitious Plan to Reshape Federal Governance

In April 2023, a coalition led by the Heritage Foundation released Project 2025, an audacious blueprint proposing to reshape American governance on a scale rarely seen in modern politics. The plan, spanning nearly a thousand pages, lays out a “Mandate for Leadership” that reaches into the fiber of every federal agency and policy domain, promising dramatic change beginning as soon as January 20, 2025, should the architects gain influence.Project 2025 isn't just another policy playbook. According to The Center for Progressive Reform, it aims to radically restructure the executive branch by concentrating unprecedented power in the Oval Office. By relying on a controversial interpretation of the unitary executive theory, the project proposes to eliminate the independence of the Justice Department, the FBI, the Federal Communications Commission, and the Federal Trade Commission, placing them all directly under presidential control. Kevin Roberts of Heritage proclaimed, “All federal employees should answer to the president,” highlighting the drive for loyalty and ideological uniformity at the highest levels.A significant tool in this restructuring is Schedule F, a hiring scheme that allows for unlimited political appointments without civil service protections. Political loyalists would fill key posts overnight, while thousands of career officials could be dismissed or reassigned. The National Federation of Federal Employees warns this could “destroy the Administrative State,” stripping public servants of their protection and empowering the incoming administration to act with little oversight. Experts note this opens the door to corruption and abuse of power on a level unseen since the patronage systems of the 19th century.Concrete proposals go beyond staffing. Project 2025 calls for dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Board and the United States Agency for International Development, as seen in recent attempts to eliminate these agencies under the current administration, which has already fired hundreds of thousands of workers. The American Federation of Government Employees and National Treasury Employees Union have filed lawsuits, arguing, “For over 47 years, the law has made clear that collective bargaining in the federal sector is in the public interest. We have taken the necessary action to file a lawsuit to uphold the law and stop this attack.” Meanwhile, chaotic return-to-office mandates and office closures serve a dual purpose: savings, and making remote work, long a civil service perk, much harder.Education policies advocated by Project 2025 are even more sweeping. Brookings experts describe proposals to shutter the Department of Education, eliminate Head Start and Title I funding, privatize the federal student loan program, and rescind protections for LGBTQ+ students. The report's authors, many of whom served in the first Trump administration, envision a landscape where federal enforcement of civil rights is severely curtailed. “This is a great group, and they're going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do,” said former President Trump in 2022, underscoring the project's ambition and alignment with his worldview.Civil liberties groups, including the ACLU, describe Project 2025 as a “blueprint for how to replace the rule of law with right-wing ideals.” Their analysis argues that, from abortion and immigration to free speech and racial justice, recommended actions would erode democratic norms and threaten fundamental rights. As the Heritage Foundation and its allies press forward, the next few months loom large. Will Congress and the courts intervene in time to temper the most sweeping proposals? Could a dramatic overhaul of the federal government become reality on “Day One”? Experts from both ends of the political spectrum agree that, if enacted, Project 2025 would alter the balance of power in Washington – possibly for generations.Thank you for tuning in. Join us next week for a deeper look at how these changes could affect American lives, and what milestones to watch as this bold project unfolds. Some great Deals https://amzn.to/49SJ3QsFor more check out http://www.quietplease.ai

In celebration of Black History Month and looking forward to Women's History Month - this week we're so pleased to air another of our CP LIVE: Dialogues to Grow By conversations, recorded live in front of an audience on the home ground of the Cultivators of Place with whom we are speaking.  This week's CP LIVE recording focuses on the paradigm-shifting landscape work of Leslie Bennett, who is dedicated to beautifully designed, edible-plant-rich, culturally rooted gardens for all people AND centering Black Women in the American Landscape. It's a great pairing. The interview and gathering for it took place on an unexpectedly chilly evening in late September 2024. Still, the spirited audience of 80+ people - in full celebratory finery - was not bothered at all. And the event was also an occasion for the first public unveiling of photographic portraits by Rachel Weil of the first eight women beneficiaries of a Black Sanctuary Garden. The portraits are taken of each woman in their gardens - embodying, as Leslie described it, their full and authentic joy and liberation. The whole evening unfolded in the heart of elegant, fruit, flower filled terraced backyard garden - one of the black sanctuary gardens to date. This conversation and all it was trying to express and hold space for was richly integrated with community, with an event specific shared music playlist, with laughter and food. Cultivating Place live is a special project of CP in the form of a limited series of CP interviews done with a curated group of gardeners across the US and recorded as audio and film (by the talented filmmaker Myriam Nicodemus of EM EN) throughout 2024 and 2025. These interviews are conducted in front of an audience of the gardeners' community in order to support and recognize these gardeners' accomplishments and contributions to the greater good as a result of their human impulse to Garden. These recorded CP Live experiences will be compiled into a film documentary rolling out in 2026/2027.  The mandate for me in these experiences and interviews is to not only give voice to (as the podcast always does), but actually make visible the many diverse connections animated by the gardening impulse everywhere. What this conversation makes visible to me, and I hope to all listeners, is that gardens are food, beauty, health, and divinity. Gardens are land use. Gardens are community centers, gardens are one form of public policy made manifest by the people. Gardens are authentic joy and liberation. Enjoy! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. Project 2025 is an ambitious and potentially transformative initiative that has gained attention due to its alignment with the political aspirations of former President Donald Trump and his prospective agenda should he return to the presidency in the 2024 election. The project is co-authored by key figures in the conservative movement and aims to significantly reshape the landscape of American governance on multiple fronts. At its core, Project 2025 is a strategic plan formulated by conservative think tanks and policymakers with the intention of preparing a governmental framework that aligns with Trump's vision. The project's proponents describe it as a "radical agenda" designed to overhaul key aspects of the federal government, regulatory practices, and other areas of public policy. It seeks to address issues such as deregulation, federal budget restructuring, and foreign policy realignment, emphasizing a more nationalist approach.A critical component of Project 2025 is its focus on deregulation across various sectors. Advocates argue that a reduction in federal regulations would spur economic growth, increase competitiveness, and restore what they perceive as freedoms curtailed by government overreach. This part of the agenda aims to streamline regulatory processes, reduce bureaucratic red tape, and foster an environment more conducive to private enterprise and innovation. In terms of fiscal policy, Project 2025 proposes significant changes to how the federal budget is managed. It calls for measures to reduce the national debt through spending cuts and potential reforms in entitlement programs. The initiative underscores the importance of achieving a balanced budget and maintaining fiscal responsibility as a cornerstone of sustainable economic policy. On the international stage, Project 2025 envisions a reorientation of U.S. foreign policy. It seeks to redefine America's global role by prioritizing national sovereignty and reducing involvement in multilateral agreements and organizations that its authors view as compromising U.S. interests. This approach suggests a more selective engagement with allies and a heightened focus on bilateral relations that bolster American strategic goals.Education and energy policy also feature prominently in Project 2025. The initiative advocates for educational reforms that emphasize parental choice and curriculum transparency, reflecting a push for increased local control over educational content. In the energy sector, the project recommends expanding domestic energy production, reducing reliance on foreign oil, and potentially revisiting environmental regulations that restrict resource development.Critics of Project 2025 argue that its proposals could lead to significant disruptions in existing policy frameworks and might challenge established norms both domestically and internationally. Concerns have been raised about the implications of such sweeping changes on social welfare programs, environmental protections, and global diplomatic relations. The potential implementation of Project 2025 would mark a notable shift in U.S. governance, presenting opportunities and challenges that could redefine America's position both at home and abroad. As the 2024 election approaches, the project serves as a blueprint for Trump's supporters and a focal point of debate among political stakeholders, reflecting broader ideological divides over the future direction of the nation.

I think John Muir said it best when writing about the Sierra Nevada Mountain passes, “They will kill care, save you from deadly apathy, set you free, and call forth every faculty into vigorous, enthusiastic action. Even the sick should try these so-called dangerous passes, because for every unfortunate they kill, they cure a thousand.” Going forward in my career as an artist, I want my work to capture nature and its idiosyncrasies. I hope that by doing so I can remind people about the real world that surrounds them.”

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over

Ribbon fall. Gallery forest. You won't find terms like these in most dictionaries, but they and hundreds like them are discussed by famous writers in the book Home Ground: A Guide to the American Landscape. The book is an intriguing collection of specialized vocabulary that invites us to look more closely at the natural world -- and delight in its language. Also, how and why the Southern drawl developed. Plus, the phrase It's a thing. This expression may seem new, but It's a thing has been a thing for quite a long time. How long? Even Jane Austen used it! And: hourglass valley, thee vs. thou, bitchin', a word game inspired by Noah Webster, Willie off the pickle boat, who did it and ran, and Powder River! A Note from James: I'm confused. There are so many national and international issues being debated on constitutional grounds lately. For example, issues at the Texas border and federal versus state powers—like the case of friends versus the state of Colorado. Does a state have the right to decide who appears on the national presidential ballot?Regarding COVID-19, I'm wondering if it was constitutional to close down all the businesses. It might have been the right decision, but does it infringe on our right to life, liberty, and property without due process? I posed these questions to a renowned constitutional expert, the author of "The Odd Clauses," who is also a professor of constitutional law at Boston University, Jay Wexler. He provided insights into which recent events were constitutional and which may not have been. Here's what he had to say.Episode Description:James leads an enlightening conversation with Jay Wexler, a professor of constitutional law at Boston University and author of 'The Odd Clauses'. They explore topics ranging from state rights in decision-making, such as Texas' border policies and Colorado's stance on the national presidential ballot, to significant constitutional debates such as the power of the Supreme Court, the implications of COVID-19 business shutdowns, and the increasingly prominent discussions around freedom of speech and presidential powers. Wexler provides deep insights into each topic, shedding light on the constitutional underpinnings and contemporary interpretations that inform these critical national discussions. The discussion also touches on potential constitutional conflicts and the nuanced understanding required to navigate these issues, with particular emphasis on the importance of Constitution's adaptability over time and the ongoing debate between originalism versus evolutionary interpretation. Episode Summary:01:00 Introduction: The Constitution in the News01:46 Interview with Constitutional Expert Jay Wexler02:33 The Life of a Law Professor03:13 Challenges of Teaching in the Digital Age04:49 Constitutional Battles in Recent Years06:16 The Power of the Supreme Court07:00 The Intricacies of Marbury v. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Fallingwater, perched above Bear Run in southwestern Pennsylvania is Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, a house perhaps as recognizable as any other in the United States–and it's not even on the nickel. Less known is that it was designed and built at the end of decades of despair and seeming futility in the architect's life, a series of circumstances that would have broken nearly anyone else. Fallingwater is not only an instantiation of Wright's developing philosophy of architecture, but of his near fanatical determination to prevail against all enemies — often, most notably, himself.  But Fallingwater is also a monument to the Depression era, even though it seems very far removed from our mental images of what "the Depression" was like. With me today is Catherine W. Zipf, an award-winning architectural historian. She is executive Director of the Bristol, historical and preservation Society in Bristol, Rhode Island, and author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater: American Architecture in the Depression Era, which is the subject of our conversation today For Further Investigation Fallingwater Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin: the one in Wisconsin Midway Gardens Wingspread The classic book to read about Chicago and its hinterland is William Cronon's Nature's Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West William R. It is full of beautiful designs, none of which were ever built. Some of the most impressive things in the exhibit are the meticulous models of the landscape in which Wright proposes to build. Catherine briefly mentioned that many houses of the 1920s, most of which are in revival style. Do you want your yard to benefit nature, while also being a place that speaks to you and is somewhere you enjoy spending time? Would you love for your yard to also be a place your neighbors admire and that inspires them to create pollinator and wildlife friendly landscapes? In this episode of the Backyard Ecology podcast, we talk with Larry Weaner about how to achieve both those goals. Larry is a Landscape Designer and the founder of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates and its educational affiliate, New Directions in the American Landscape, or NDAL. He is also the author of the book, Garden Revolution. According to Larry, ecology based landscaping or ecological landscaping takes into consideration where and how native plants naturally grow then adapts that knowledge to your property. The goal is to create a landscape that not only benefits nature, but is also a place that speaks to you and is somewhere you enjoy being. One of the topics that came up several times, and in several different ways, was how we connect and engage with a place. The place-based parts of our conversation included not only personal connections, but also community connections. Community connection is important because if our ecology based landscaping connects with our neighbors, then they may replicate some of those principles on their own properties, thus increasing the ecological benefits. Another topic that wove its way throughout our conversation was maintaining and managing our landscapes. This topic came up multiple times and in multiple ways. As Larry said, there probably isn't any such thing as a “no maintenance” landscape. Larry also talks about the biggest challenge he sees people face, especially when getting started. Larry is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to integrating ecological principles and landscape design. His approach is one that really resonates with me and has done so for several years. Daniel Kaven is the author of Architecture of Normal: The Colonization of the American Landscape, a book that views the built environment through the lens of successive developments in transportation. An architect and visual artist hailing from Albuquerque, now calling Portland home, Kaven takes on suburbanization, flying cars, and why “Generation Z needs to get out in the streets and be really pissed off about work-from-home.” Intro/Outro: The Big Country, by The Talking Heads Discussed: Ed Ruscha Cibola – one of the Seven Cities of Gold COVID as accelerant of moving from an experiential lifestyle to a destination-based lifestyle Instagram feeds are the new main streets of America United Airlines buys Archer – an air-taxi company Henry Ford's flying personal cars department Prediction: First place to adopt flying cars – Saudi Arabia The Main Street and Mall Retail Apocalypse Future infrastructure and traffic planning will be about stratification of means of transport, literally Just because we have the technology to do something, doesn't mean we should Do we want to live in places where we just order online and it gets delivered to a drone pad? The Big Tech companies are nation-states, or partners thereof Urbanism had a good run from 1990s to just before COVID. The post-COVID boom is in places like suburban Boise – Boomtown ZoomTown, and it's already fizzling. “Generation Z needs to get out in the streets and be really pissed off about work-from-home.” Architecture firms have really phoned in their responsibility to make places where people want to be – as a counterpoint to work-from-home, the tone of which is being set by Facebook and their brethren. “There is no future with goggles on.” “We don't need to rip America apart and build the Metaverse.” “How can people live a more spacious life in an urban environment?” “We're going to regret having made all these 5-over-1 wood-frame buildings with cheap materials.”

Peter Nesbit came by today and we actually recorded on a Sunday (something I never do). I did that because I really wanted him on this podcast and sometimes you have to work around a person's schedule to capture important stories from important people. Anyway, Peter was in Tucson and I thought: "God, I got to have Pete on my podcast." Peter is just a really interesting individual. I've known him for 30 years, but you don't know somebody until you sit down and have an intimate talk about how they got through life accomplishing all the things they've accomplished. This podcast was uniquely Pete Nesbit. From his time in the Navy on a ship that was involved in a major ship-to-ship collision during Vietnam and how this moment affected how he sees things, to just his whole world view and how he wants to be remembered as a painter. It's clear that he puts that personal history and his place in the broader history of the world on a very high pedestal regarding what he does and why he does it, which is really trying to make an impact in every painting that he does. I think you'll find it very unique. I know I did.  I was really happy to have him on and I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did. Art Dealer Diaries episode 195 with Pete Nesbit.
