She has also won Tony, Emmy and Golden Globes awards for her theatre and television work. In 1992 she gave up acting to become a Labour MP, winning her seat five times. But in 2016 she returned to the stage, playing King Lear in London and New York, and to television for a BAFTA winning performance as an elderly women with dementia in Elizabeth Is Missing. Glenda Jackson recalls her working class upbringing in Birkenhead, and how she won a scholarship to the drama school RADA with help from the manager of the Boots chemists' where she worked at the time. She chooses the director Peter Brook as a major influence on her work, having starred in his radical 1964 stage production of the play Marat/Sade, and the version he subsequently adapted for cinema. She remembers also working closely with the director Ken Russell on several films, including the Oscar-winning Women in Love, adapted from the DH Lawrence novel. Glenda's comic appearances on the Morecambe and Wise Show in the early 1970s are recalled as career highlights. Glenda Jackson also chooses Margaret Thatcher as huge influence on her life and career, as it was the policies of the former Prime Minister which prompted her to give up acting for 23 years while she served as a Labour MP. Peter Brook and Richard Wolinsky. Peter Brook (1925-2022), visionary director, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. Peter Brook was one of the greatest theatrical directors of the twentieth century. Artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company for twenty years from 1962-1982, he transformed how the English speaking world looked at the plays of William Shakespeare. He is perhaps best known, during those years, for his production of “The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade,” also known as “Marat/Sade,” which later became a film and turned Glenda Jackson into an international star. His other films include “Lord of the Flies,” “Meetings with Remarkable Men” and a version of “King Lear” starring Paul Scofield. His 1985 nine-hour adaptation of the Indian epic Mahabharata is probably his masterpiece. At the age of 92, he and his collaborator Marie Helene Estienne went back to the Mahabharata with a short theatrical piece, “Battlefield,” which played at ACT's Geary Theater in May, 2017. This interview was recorded on April 24, 2017 in a rehearsal studio in the ACT offices in San Francisco. Included in the podcast is a brief commentary on Peter Brook by actor and director Simon McBurney. Sean and Lucy team up once again with Max Feldman to explore Sadeian liberty, the principles of Enlightenment, the history of madness, Artaud's theatre of cruelty and the still ongoing the repercussions of the French Revolution in Peter Brooke's 1967 adaptation of Peter Weiss's play The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade
Actor, Jayne Eastwood joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!! What a blast I had with Jayne! She made me guffaw a few times during our conversation. Don’t be fooled! There are so many gems of wisdom hidden amongst the laughter and funny stories, Jayne has had a diversified career as an actor with much success and she is opening up about the ups and downs of it all and how she remains grounded through it all. In this episode: How painting has served as another creative outlet and forces her to be present and in the moment What mantra she used to help her quit smoking after 50 years and the effect it has had on her vocal range How to accept rejection as a part of the game and why it is important to feel the feelings around being rejected. How “showing up” is the key to moving forward in your career as an artist. A little about Jayne: Jayne Eastwood, actor (born in Toronto). Jayne Eastwood was raised in Toronto, where she attended Northern Secondary School. It was in Toronto that she became a member of the cast of the musical Godspell, which played at the ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE. The show ran from 1972-73 and Eastwood worked with cast members Martin SHORT, Andrea MARTIN, Gilda RADNER, and Eugene LEVY, and joined several of them in founding the Second City Theatre Troupe. Eastwood often appeared on Second City's creative offspring, SCTV, most memorably in the famous parody of GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD (her recurring line of dialogue is "I'm bummed out") with John CANDY and Joe FLAHERTY. Though Eastwood moves effortlessly from comedy to drama, comedy remains her magnetic north, drawing her to work with Women Fully Clothed, a group of performers nominated in 2005 for a CANADIAN COMEDY AWARD for best sketch troupe. From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s Eastwood appeared in stage productions of works by Michel TREMBLAY, Tom Stoppard, and Neil Simon, by such companies as Theatre in the Dell, Toronto Arts Productions, Centrestage Company, and Toronto Truck Theatre. She maintained a presence in both movies and television, working steadily in a variety of roles that began, in the 1980s, to include considerable voice work. One of her first television appearances was on the series That's Show Biz with Lorne MICHAELS and Hart and Earl Pomerantz, and she went on to become a regular on John Byner's show Bizarre from 1980 to 1985. In film, she played the president's wife in Al WAXMAN's sex comedy My Pleasure Is My Business (1975), appeared in the Robin SPRY film One Man (1977), had a small part in David CRONENBERG's Videodrome (1983) and did voice work for The Care Bears Movie (1985). She could be heard as the voice of Mrs Dingle and of Cookie and Joyce in the animated shows For Better or For Worse, and Bob and Margaret. In 1998 she won a GEMINI AWARD for best supporting actress in a drama for Dangerous Offender: the Marlene Moore Story. She played Aunt Agatha on the series Noddy and Friends, winning a 1999 Gemini Award for her work. Eastwood's film and TV appearances continued through the 1990s and into the new millennium, in works as varied as Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), Chicago (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). Eastwood has had parts in everything from stage productions of Marat/Sade to TV shows such as King of Kensington, Anne of Green Gables, and Riverdale, and in radio plays like CBC's Steve the Second. She is best known for her role as Betty, the pregnant wife abandoned by Joey in the canonical English-Canadian film Goin' down the Road (1970). Many viewers will recall her as the character Ronnie Sacks in the Canadian television series This Is Wonderland or as one of the regular characters in the partly improvised Train 48. She appears as Maxine Bingley in the series Billable Hours and plays a teacher in the movie Hairspray (2007), which was shot in Toronto. She has a recurring character part in the popular series Little Mosque n the Prarie, and reprised her Goin' down the Road role in the sequel, Down the Road Again (2011). In 2014 she was a guest star on Working the Engles alongside her old friend Andrea Martin. She can be seen in the hit series Haven (2013-2014) as the recurring lead role of Gloria. More recently Jayne worked with director Kenny ORTEGA on The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Orphan Black with Tatiana MASLANY. In 1999 Jayne Eastwood received the EARLE GREY AWARD for lifetime achievement and the recipient of the 2011 DAVE BROADFOOT AWARD at the CANADIAN COMEDY AWARDS. Eastwood is a talented and reliable actor who decided early on to remain in Toronto rather than leave for the limelight of the US. Her career is curiously and satisfyingly Canadian in that she has crafted a successful working life as an ensemble player in a variety of media while remaining in her own home town. By 1988, Glenda had made six films with Ken Russell including THE MUSIC LOVERS and WOMEN IN LOVE. But though Ken didn't quite have the clout he once did, Glenda was still loyal and totally game for this high-camp, theatrical, romp complete with loads of boobs, dildo-spears, and some baffling full frontal nudity. Glenda (braying, bilious and bejeweled from head to toe) is Herodias, second wife of Herod Antipas, who has the hots for his niece/step-daughter Salome, who in turn has the hots for John the Baptist. Now imagine all this being acted out in front of Oscar Wilde himself, by a cast of bootboys and skivvies. MARAT/SADE seems tame by comparison. We discuss Ken Russell, Wilde, our own personal nudity, and the Gospels, of course. Clips from the film presented according to fair use policy.

Peter Brook, visionary director, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. Peter Brook is one of the greatest theatrical directors of the twentieth century. Now, at the age of 92, he and his collaborator Marie Helene Estienne have gone back to the Mahabharata with a short theatrical piece, “Battlefield,” which is playing at ACT's Geary Theater through May 21st. This interview was recorded on April 24, 2017 in a rehearsal studio in the ACT offices in San Francisco. It's 2017! Where better to start than with an old friend, much theatre/Dr Who nerdiness, and absolutely filthy sexual content. Seriously - **STRONG ADULT/SCIFI CONTENT** Scott Brennan and I met twenty years ago when we were both cast in an amateur production of Marat/Sade and we've been complimentary dickheads ever since. A writer, stand up comedian, actor, skilled improvisor, musician, voice-over artist, mentor, producer, star of the Talking Poofy podcast and all round spunk, Scott has been a familiar face on Australian TV and a familiar voice on Australian radio for more years than either of our ageing, forgetful brains care - or are able - to remember. We share a love of the timelord and an adoration of David Bowie (Scott was my date for the David Bowie Is... exhibition in 2015), and he's one of my favourite guest singers in my many idiotic band ventures. Not to overstate it, but he's the David to my Freddie in Under Pressure. From the changing face of gay identity, to which people over 50 years old we'd root, to difficult parent/child relationships, to the inherent impracticalities of the spit roast, join Uncle Scotty B and Aunty Quim as they dispense relationship advice and struggle to remember actors' names like two drunk, dirty, addled old ravaged hags (i.e. basically, us). P.S. In case you were wondering, the thumbnail image is precisely what Scott delivered when I asked for a high res picture... P.P.S. Ian MARTER. It was Ian Marter...GAH!! P.P.P.S. Sound is a little different in the studio narration - sorry about that - emergency recording set up! Tickets for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre on 9 April 2017 - a tribute to Split Enz with many special guests - can be purchased here!
Welcome to Episode 64 of Brain Software with Mike Mandel and Chris Thompson! Amazingly, we continue with our 5 Star Rating, despite the absolute idiocy of this podcast. Check out mikemandelhypnosis.com for more info on what we’re up to. Here are the show notes for this episode: Despite technical difficulties, we’re still here! Two Silver Bags of Pykthos arrived in the mail! Who the heck was it?!? Mike explains how he just helped out the Soulpepper play Marat/Sade as the Mind Consultant. More about pattern interrupts…Chris messes people up with them; then helps them get resourceful! Chris tells a Ken Sweatman story about using a pattern interrupt on his daughter Gloxinnya But isn’t the real reason…??? Mike challenges Chris to give his product free to the planet. Chris reverses and attempts to get Mike to sell his hypnosis training cheaper. It doesn’t work. 1971: Mike’s friends were the intelligentsia of Wexford Collegiate. Mike begins a Ken Sweatman story. The Mike Gray psychedelic ending as a pattern interrupt. Mike is called “A bloody idiot!” by his mentor, Derek Balmer. Mike grips Chris spasmodically, and coughs on his neck without warning, and is greatly amused by his own brilliant humour. Congrats to Steve in Australia for a mind-boggling hypnosis show! It’s just the beginning for Steve… Chris drops Larry Elman’s name to gain prestige. He goes on to quote Dave Elman, Larry’s father. A Ken Sweatman story rapidly develops and goes almost nowhere, although Chris talks about lotions and petroleum jelly and numbness, and placebos. The story continues for about 5 more hours, or seems to… Is the placebo “waking hypnosis”? Does it even matter? Or is waking hypnosis a placebo? Mike complains of being contacted by every lunatic on the planet. He tells of dealing with a moron via pointing out the red herring…Well you’re wrong!!! Factor vs Faculty, yet again. Words mean things… Dan asks about hypnotizing the deaf. Mike answers…The story of the Dominican Republic and hypnotizing the South Americans. Unconscious cues can lead to hypnosis. Mike at a school for the deaf, where 2 people signed the entire show. “He’s okay, he’s waving…” Chris doesn’t realize the story’s over and largely uninteresting, and keeps it going, rapidly converting it to yet another Ken Sweatman story. Igor at Hypnothoughts. Was he having a stroke, or was it the CVA Induction? Question about Florida…A principal who got raked over the coals because of alleged connexions between student deaths and his hypnotic interventions. Chris says “Ath-a-lete” but Mike exercises admirable restraint and says nothing. It leads to another opportunity for Chris to channel Ken Sweatman. Someone is furious with Mike, calling him “arrogant and abusive”. Mike admits to the arrogance, but does not accept the abusive title. The word is losing all meaning which is sad and dangerous. The man from Montreal was on a tirade, not understanding hyperbole and discussion. Some of Mike’s in laws need diagrams to stay ontrack during discussions. This is because they are idiots. Mike calls for precision in the richest of all languages: English Empowering question: What vital task will you complete before the end of this year?
