Ep.102 Ehud the Deliverer of Israel

The History of the Bible

In this episode, we explore the historical and biblical context surrounding Israel's second judge, Ehud, during a time when the Israelites once again turned away from God after the death of Othniel. As a result, God allowed King Eglon of Moab—along with allies from the Ammonites and Amalekites—to oppress Israel for 18 years. We dive into the origins and cultural backgrounds of these three groups, particularly the Moabites, descendants of Lot, and their ongoing territorial conflicts with Israel. The story climaxes with Ehud, a left-handed (or ambidextrous) warrior from the tribe of Benjamin, who assassinates Eglon in a daring and strategic move, leading to Israel's liberation. This episode also examines archaeological evidence surrounding the City of Palms (Jericho), the political symbolism of the tribute to Eglon, and the significance of Ehud's actions, which brought 80 years of peace to Israel.   If you'd like to support "The History of the Bible", visit our Patreon Page at https://patreon.com/TheHistoryoftheBible. We're heading into week three in our study of the book of Judges. And just like the previous weeks, we're going to see the sin cycle continue. As miraculous as Ehud's defeat of King Eglon was, the victory didn't last forever. There was 80 years of peace before a new generation grew up who didn't know God. This week we're going to see God deliver his people again, this time through an incredibly wise women, a reluctant leader, and a gal who was pretty good with a hammer and nails And while this story clearly points to the problem of the human heart it also points forward to the permanent solution.

SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 264, “The Lord Raised Up…” Kim discusses the difference between having the Lord raise someone up against you due to your insistence on doing evil and being raised up by the Lord for His good purpose. As we saw in the last episode, King Solomon insisted on his own way, which was disastrous for himself and the people of Israel. I pray that each of us will insist on being exactly who the Lord raised us up to be.   Our focal passages for this episode are 1 Kings 11:14-25 with verse 14 and 23 as the focal verses:   14 Then the Lord raised up Hadad the Edomite, a member of Edom's royal family, to be Solomon's adversary.    23 God also raised up Rezon son of Eliada as Solomon's adversary. Rezon had fled from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah,  WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Prayerfully consider what the Lord may have raised you up to do.   Additional Resources and Scriptures:   16 Then the Lord raised up judges to rescue the Israelites from their attackers. The content discusses the biblical tale of Ehud from the Book of Judges, emphasising his role as a saviour and a prefiguration of Christ. Ehud, a left-handed man from the tribe of Benjamin, is chosen by God to rescue Israel from the tyranny of King Eglon of Moab. The narrative focuses on Ehud's use of a two-edged dagger to eliminate Eglon and free his people. Symbolism is drawn from Ehud's actions, representing the potency of the Word of God and the eventual liberation it brings. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christadelphians-talk/message

Verses 14 to 31 of Judges 3. And the Israelites served Eglon of Moab for eighteen years. But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, the Lord again raised up a rescuer to save them. His name was Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed man of the tribe of Benjamin. The Israelites sent Ehud to deliver their tribute money to King Eglon of Moab. So Ehud made a double-edged dagger that was about a foot long, and he strapped it to his right thigh, keeping it hidden under his clothing. He brought the tribute money to Eglon, who was very fat. After delivering the payment, Ehud started home with those who had helped carry the tribute. But when Ehud reached the stone idols near Gilgal, he turned back. He came to Eglon and said, “I have a secret message for you.” So the king commanded his servants, “Be quiet!” and he sent them all out of the room. Ehud walked over to Eglon, who was sitting alone in a cool upstairs room. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you!” As King Eglon rose from his seat, Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled out the dagger strapped to his right thigh, and plunged it into the king's belly. The dagger went so deep that the handle disappeared beneath the king's fat. So Ehud did not pull out the dagger, and the king's bowels emptied.  Then Ehud closed and locked the doors of the room and escaped down the latrine. After Ehud was gone, the king's servants returned and found the doors to the upstairs room locked. They thought he might be using the latrine in the room, so they waited. But when the king didn't come out after a long delay, they became concerned and got a key. And when they opened the doors, they found their master dead on the floor. While the servants were waiting, Ehud escaped, passing the stone idols on his way to Seirah. When he arrived in the hill country of Ephraim, Ehud sounded a call to arms. Then he led a band of Israelites down from the hills. “Follow me,” he said, “for the Lord has given you victory over Moab your enemy.” So they followed him. And the Israelites took control of the shallow crossings of the Jordan River across from Moab, preventing anyone from crossing. They attacked the Moabites and killed about 10,000 of their strongest and most able-bodied warriors. Not one of them escaped. So Moab was conquered by Israel that day, and there was peace in the land for eighty years. After Ehud, Shamgar son of Anath rescued Israel. He once killed 600 Philistines with an ox goad.

This is a story narrated in Judges 3. It features a left-handed man, who assassinates King Eglon of Moab. His being left-handed allowed him to go undetected by having a sword under his clothing on his right side. Usually, a concealed weapon would be on the left side, thus facilitating a right-handed assassin. Ehud managed not only to kill the king, but get alone with him and carry out the deed in a manner that would delay the king's attendants in coming to his aid. Moab had been exacting extortionate amounts of money from Israel for 18 years. That ended with Eglon's ignominious demise.

We are continuing our journey through the book of Judges, looking at Ehud—the Left-Handed Judge. Othniel has died and Israel has once again drifted in idol worship and wanting to be more like the nations around them rather than as a distinct people of God. God allows King Eglon of Moab, with the help of the Ammonites and Amalekites, to conquer Israel and make them his subjects. Once again, the Israelites cry out to God. God stays true to his covenant with them and raises up Ehud, a left-handed man, to deliver them from Eglon. Ehud would not have been Israel's first choice of a hero, but God often uses the unexpected to save his people.

Simon reads the Bible

Judges 3 NLT read aloud by Simon MacFarlane. 1 These are the nations that the Lord left in the land to test those Israelites who had not experienced the wars of Canaan. 2 He did this to teach warfare to generations of Israelites who had no experience in battle. 3 These are the nations: the Philistines (those living under the five Philistine rulers), all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath. 4 These people were left to test the Israelites—to see whether they would obey the commands the Lord had given to their ancestors through Moses. 5 So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, 6 and they intermarried with them. Israelite sons married their daughters, and Israelite daughters were given in marriage to their sons. And the Israelites served their gods. 7 The Israelites did evil in the Lord's sight. They forgot about the Lord their God, and they served the images of Baal and the Asherah poles. 8 Then the Lord burned with anger against Israel, and he turned them over to King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim. And the Israelites served Cushan-rishathaim for eight years. 9 But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, the Lord raised up a rescuer to save them. His name was Othniel, the son of Caleb's younger brother, Kenaz. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he became Israel's judge. He went to war against King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram, and the Lord gave Othniel victory over him. 11 So there was peace in the land for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died. 12 Once again the Israelites did evil in the Lord's sight, and the Lord gave King Eglon of Moab control over Israel because of their evil. 13 Eglon enlisted the Ammonites and Amalekites as allies, and then he went out and defeated Israel, taking possession of Jericho, the city of palms. 14 And the Israelites served Eglon of Moab for eighteen years. 15 But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, the Lord again raised up a rescuer to save them. This bizarre and gory story is found in Judges 3. Ehud is an Israelite assassin. He carries out his nefarious deed because he is left-handed and able to hide his sword on this right side. Security people would be watching for a right-handed man. Not only does Ehud accomplish his grisly task, but does it in a way that allows him to escape. The question is: What possible religious lesson comes from such a strange story?

SERIES SUMMARY: The Book of Judges bridges the period between the exodus of the Israelites in Egypt and wandering in the wilderness, to the time of the Kingdom of Israel. God's people have settled in Canaan, but they didn't drive out all the people's God commanded them to. As a result, they continually fell into worshipping foreign gods (i.e. idols). To chastise them, God would allow one of these neighboring nations to oppress them. The Israelites would cry to God for help. And God would then send them a deliverer, a savior, a "judge" to deliver them militarily. When peace were restored, things went well, Israel got spiritually lazy, and the cycle would repeat. In this book, we find a recurring metaphor for apathy in God's people, and yet, God's zealous love for his people seems to increase even as our failures remain.  This week we'll be studying Judges 3:12-20 -  under the theme "The Dirty Work of Ehud." Ehud is an unlikely hero, an apparently disabled man, whom God uses to shame the proud King Eglon of Moab. The victory always belongs to the Lord. The question is whether we're willing to go the dirty places and do the messy work that God calls us to.

How did they oppress Israel? How did they oppress them?Who was the judge designated by Israel to head up the delegation to bring tribute to the oppressor? How did this judge view this assignment? What happened with the judge after he killed the king?ANSWERSAnywhere between twelve and fifteen, depending on who is counted. If Barak is counted along with Deborah, if Abimelech (an evil ruler) is counted, and if you don't count Samuel, then there are 15. Remember that some of the judges overlapped in time, and judged in different parts of the land.Ehud and ShamgarMoab. Eighteen years. Requiring them to pay tribute in gold or silver to Moab.Ehud. He saw this occasion as an opportunity to overthrow the ungodly power of King Eglon of Moab. After Ehud killed King Eglon, he escaped to the mountains of Ephraim and rallied the troops of Israel to defeat the Moabites.DISCUSS/CONSIDEREven as Israel was commanded to drive out the enemy in order to enjoy the blessings of the land, so we have to drive out the enemy in order to enjoy our spiritual blessings in Christ. Satan is our enemy and he uses the world, the flesh, and even demonic forces to keep us defeated and to keep us from enjoying the spiritual blessings God has given us. King Eglon was a picture of the flesh not held in check. Do you have a problem in keeping your flesh checked? Do you have a problem in losing ground that has already been conquered? How do you cut off the flesh? By applying the word of God, the two-edged sword of the Scripture to your life. See Hebrews 4:12. Are you cutting off the flesh?CHALLENGEHow are you different from other believers? Remember, God can use these differences for His glory. What is your spiritual heritage? Even if you were not raised in a Christian home, you have been given a spiritual parent by the Lord. Whatever your background, God can use you. Make full use of Christian mentors and role models in your life. Then be one.KEY VERSES"The children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened the king of Moab against them...But when they cried out to the Lord, He raised up a deliverer...When Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel, the land had rest for eighy years." Judges 3:12, 15, 30"The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword..." Hebrews 4:12

JUDGES 2-3:Yesterday we heard how the tribe of Judah was more successful in driving out the Canaanites than the other tribes. Several of the tribes just moved in with their enemies. PSALM 79:This lament by Asaph is like Ps 74, talking about Jerusalem and the Temple conquered by enemies. There is a strong comparison with what we see starting to happen in Judges. GALATIANS 1:We heard the controversy over circumcision in Acts 15. This letter to the Galatian believers is on a similar theme, and it shows how Paul would have argued with the Jews of the circumcision party. Paul stays very much on this theme in this book— which in some ways foreshadows some arguments in the book of Romans. Important sections for memorizing include the ‘crucified with Christ’ passages in chapter 2 and 6, and the works of the flesh and fruits of the Holy Spirit in chapter 5. This book makes it perfectly clear that we are not saved by religion. We are saved by ‘faith’— which means ‘fully believing in Christ’. Do not fall into the trap of choosing between what James says about being saved by works and what Paul says. The two teachings are compatible. The saying taught to me by one of my spiritual fathers (Glen Zumwalt) is this: We are saved by ‘faith alone’; but saving faith will never be ‘alone’. Paul’s introduction in the first chapter is unique among his letters. He normally starts with praise for the congregation he is writing to. Not in this case! After he expresses his shock at the Galatian church, he goes on to remind them that the Good News they had so quickly abandoned was revealed directly to him by the Lord. NLT Translation notes:|Jdg. 3:12 Once again the Israelites did evil in the Lord ’s sight, and the Lord gave King Eglon of Moab control over Israel because of their evil.====Gal. 1:1This letter is from Paul, an apostle. I was not appointed by any group of people or any human authority, but by [Christ Jesus//Jesus Christ] himself and by God the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead. 6  [But] I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News 15 But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous [kindness/grace]. Then it pleased him16 to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. 23 All they knew was that people were saying, “The one who used to persecute us is now preaching the very [beliefs//faith] he tried to destroy!”

Judges 2:11-19 The book of Judges repeats a cyclical theme throughout. First, the people forget and forsake God for idols. Then, God withdraws His protection, and oppressors take advantage. Amidst great suffering, the people cry out for deliverance. So, God raises up a judge to rescue the people. While that leader lives, the people remain faithful, but then they once again forget and forsake God. Around and around we go with generation after generation repeating the same pattern. Judges 3:15 God raised up Ehud to deliver the people from King Eglon of Moab. (On his left-handedness, see Judges 20:15-16; 1 Chronicles 12:2.) Judges 3:19-21 Ehud courageously used his left-handedness to assassinate the king and bring relief to God’s people. Judges 3:31 Shamgar was a farmer with an ox goad, but God worked through him to save Israel from the Philistines. Judges 4:4-9 Deborah was a judge and a prophetess who brought a word of the LORD to Barak to attack Jabin, king of Canaan. Judges 4:13-15 Barak fought against Jabin’s commander, Sisera, and his 900 iron chariots and routed them. Sisera escaped on foot, but met his demise at the hands of a woman, Jael, who lulled him to sleep and hammered a tent peg through his skull. Judges 6:1-6 Once again, Israel turned away from God and faced the consequences. The Midianites scraped Israel clean of food, making the people hide their food in caves. Judges 6:12-16 God finds a scared farmer named Gideon and sends an angel with the words, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” After working with him extensively to build his faith, God brought a huge victory through Gideon, defeating 135,000 Midianites with 300 Israelites. Psalm 18:2-6 The LORD is our rock, fortress, and deliverer! Let us call upon Him and cry out for deliverance in our own time. Let us put our trust in Him. Judges 9:52-54 Gideon’s son, Abimelech, was a power-hungry, fratricidal tyrant. He attacked other Israelites that didn’t accept his legitimacy until an unnamed woman dropped part of her bread maker on his head. (See also 2 Samuel 11:20-21.) 2 Chronicles 16:9 Likewise, Jephthah and Samson were outcasts through whom God brought sensational deliverance for His people. His eyes are running to and fro, looking for people to work with-those whose hearts are blameless toward Him. Is your heart blameless toward Him? God delights to use unqualified people in the hardest times to accomplish His greatest work. He is our deliverer. Let us look to Him for our deliverance now.

Editable Online Notes HERE Sometimes it's dangerous to be an outsider. Turn to Ruth 1 This December we're unpacking the surprising truth, that the message of Christmas is not for the holy & the whole, but for schemers, sinners, outsiders, and the broken. In Other Words, the message of Christmas is for people just like me and you. We're discovering that by looking at four characters in the genealogy of Jesus. Four women who stick out like a sore thumb, because women weren't usually included in genealogies of that day. Tamar -- the message of Christmas is for schemers Rahab -- the message of Christmas is for sinners This morning we'll see that the message of Christmas isn't for the holy and the whole, but for outsiders like Ruth, and like you and me. Two Questions:   1) The Pain of Rejection Read vv. 1-5 Ruth was an outcast because she was a Moabite Genesis 19:20-27 Sodom and Gomorrah have been destroyed Abraham’s nephew Lot has been rescued His wife is turned into a pillar of salt Lot and his two daughters are holed up in a cave Lot’s daughters get him drunk and sleep with him His firstborn daughter becomes pregnant and has a son named Moab Hundreds of years later (Numbers 22-24), the Israelites are wandering in the wilderness The Moabite people are afraid of them so their king Balak hires a prophet named Balaam to curse them Balaam is unable to curse Israel from the outside, so they infiltrate them from the inside Moabite women seduce Israelite men, and God’s people begin worshiping the false gods of Moab Deuteronomy‬ ‭23:3-4‬—“No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever, because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.” Ruth 1:1 says this story happened in the days when the Judges ruled Since Boaz, one of the main characters in Ruth, is the son of Rahab who was rescued from Jericho, this has to be fairly early in the period of Judges. Perhaps shortly after the death of Joshua. Judges 3 tells us about one of the very first judges that led Israel, a man named Ehud. He was a lefty assassin who delivered the Israelites by killing a fat king named Eglon. Can anybody guess the ethnicity of King Eglon? Moabite.  In fact, Jewish rabbinic tradition says that King Eglon was Ruth’s father. Although there is nothing in the text to suggest such a connection, it may indicate common belief that Ruth’s story occurred during the years that Israel was enslaved by Moab. Ruth was an outcast because she was a Woman We live in a world of girl power and #MeToo, but Ruth lived in a day when women were often treated like property How pro-women the Bible is (including women in genealogy, story like this, etc.) Ruth was an outcast because she was Barren Hard to realize how painful this is when you live in a culture where women regularly choose a type of infertility through sterilization, birth control and abortion Ruth was an outcast because she was a Widow How we too are outcasts... “But she has a connection to God’s people by marrying Naomi’s son!” Superficial connection This is the same type of connection many people have to God Just like Ruth, we are outsiders who need redemption! 2) The Power of Relationships Hallmark movies—it’s the destination We know how this story ends, but how?!? Ruth won’t get to meet Boaz if she doesn’t go to Bethlehem and she won’t go to Bethlehem without Naomi Naomi didn’t get everything right, and neither do we But she took Ruth to the right place—for us it’s not a place but a person Hershael York teaching kid about trinity  God Uses His Flawed Instruments God Uses Providence God Uses Suffering God uses a Redeemer 3) A Picture of Redemption Two redemptions in Ruth... Of her soul Of her circumstances  Boaz the Redeemer

His name was Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed man of the tribe of Benjamin. The Israelites sent Ehud to deliver their tribute money to King Eglon of Moab. …21 Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled out the dagger strapped to his right thigh, and plunged it into the king's belly.   These scriptures were used for emphasis.   13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body     and knit me together in my mother's womb. 14  Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!     Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. 15  You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,     as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16  You saw me before I was born.     Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
