Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Support our mission to teach every verse of the Bible. Read more here: Project23 Our text today is Judges 3:9-11 But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died. — Judges 3:9-11 What happens when God's Spirit fills an ordinary man? Israel cried out. And God answered—not with an army, but with a man. Othniel wasn't flashy. He wasn't famous. He was Caleb's younger brother, living in the shadow of a great warrior. Yet when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, everything changed. Notice the shift: Israel cried. God raised. The Spirit empowered. Victory came. Peace followed. This is God's pattern. He takes an ordinary man, fills him with his Spirit, and uses him to deliver his people. Never underestimate what God can do through you when his Spirit fills you. You don't need the perfect résumé, the loudest voice, or the sharpest skills. What you need is surrender to God's Spirit. The battles you face aren't won by sheer grit but by God's Spirit working through you. Othniel's story reminds us: victory doesn't rest on the size of the man, but on the strength of the God in the man. ASK THIS: When was the last time I cried out to God for deliverance instead of trying to fix things myself? Do I believe God's Spirit can work powerfully through me right now? What keeps me from full surrender to God's Spirit? Where in my life do I need to step forward in faith like Othniel? DO THIS: Today, pray specifically for the Spirit of the Lord to empower you in one area where you feel weak—and then take one step of faith into that battle. PRAY THIS: Holy Spirit, fill me today. Use me, like you used Othniel, to bring your victory and your peace where I cannot on my own. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Same God."
We continue our sermon series, Unafraid, looking at different people in Scripture who walked in the Lord without fear of this world. This week, we start our look in Judges 2 and 3 at Othniel.Judges 2:11-13 REBELLIONJUDGES 2:14-15 and JUDGES 2:20-21 CONSEQUENCES PEOPLE CRYJudges 2:16 GOD ANSWERS JUDGES 2:17 REBELLION Judges 3:7-8 In the middle of spiritual confusion and cultural chaos God looks for A COURAGEOUS VOICE. Judges 3:9 REPENTACE IS THE FIRST STEP TO VICTORY. Judges 1:10-13Matthew Henry - "Caleb is doing what older men should do, and that is inspire the younger generation to serve God." A few things about unafraid Othniel.1. Othniel had a questionable background.2. Othniel was of questionable age. Judges 3:10-113. Othniel had unquestionable courage AND an unquestionable commitment
In these chapters we see two different kinds of people: one type of person takes God at his word and aims to fully possess all that God has promised. The other type sees all the reasons it won't work, all the reasons to be afraid, all the reasons to feel sorry for themselves. As we compare these examples, we are to hold a mirror up in front of ourselves and ask which type of person we most resemble.Sermon Outline:I. We Must Take Hold of God's Promises by FaithII. We Must Not Forfeit God's Promises Through Fear or CompromiseSermon Discussion Questions:1. In what ways might we, as Christians, fail to “claim” the spiritual inheritance that is ours in Christ? What keeps us from living in the fullness of God's promises?2. Caleb, Othniel, Achsah, and the daughters of Zelophehad demonstrated faithful boldness. How do their stories challenge the way you approach prayer, obedience, or decision-making today?3. What forms of fear, compromise, or self-pity do you see most commonly hindering Christians from whole-hearted discipleship today?4. How does remembering God's faithfulness in the past strengthen our faith for present challenges? What are some practical ways we can cultivate this kind of biblical memory in our daily walk with God?5. If you were to take inventory of your own walk with Christ, where do you see faithful boldness at work, and where do you see tendencies toward half-heartedness? What steps could you take this week to walk more fully in God's promises?

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Support our mission to teach every verse of the Bible on video over the next 23 years. Read more about it here: PROJECT23 Our text today is Judges 1:8-15: “And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland. And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher. And Caleb said, ‘He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife.' And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife. When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, ‘What do you want?' She said to him, ‘Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.' And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.” — Judges 1:8-15 The conquest continues—and Judah isn't slowing down. City by city, they obey and advance. But embedded in this war-torn section is a beautiful picture of legacy. Caleb—the same man who stood faithful back in Numbers—is still moving forward with bold faith. And he's pulling others into the fight. He throws down a challenge: “Whoever captures Debir gets my daughter's hand in marriage.” It's not just a reward—it's a call to courage and a test of sorts of the type of man he hoped would carry his legacy on. Othniel steps up. And Achsah, Caleb's daughter, isn't passive either. She asks her father for more land, then asks boldly for water. She's not greedy. She's confident. Courage, boldness, and bravery run in the family. This moment isn't about a single conquest; it's a story of leadership character. Caleb isn't just taking territory; he's building a family legacy. His faith didn't start and die in the desert. It grew stronger, and now it lives on through his extended family. Your faith wasn't meant to die with you. It was meant to inspire the next generation. You might not be capturing cities, but are you cultivating courage? Are you raising up sons, daughters, disciples, or friends who trust God boldly? Do those closest to you see a legacy worth following? Caleb didn't retire. He led. He gave. He kept walking in faith until his last breath. Pass on a spiritual legacy to someone today. ASK THIS: Am I building a legacy of faith or just surviving spiritually? Who is watching and learning from my walk with God? What bold step of obedience can I take today? How can I encourage courage in someone else's life? DO THIS: Share one spiritual lesson with someone younger today—something that's shaped your faith. PRAY THIS: Father, let my faith be contagious. Help me build a legacy that honors you and strengthens others. Amen PLAY THIS: "Build My Life."
Victories of the first three judges: Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar. Introduction to the prophetess Deborah.
We delve into the era of the Judges, a tumultuous period in Israel's history marked by cycles of disobedience, oppression, deliverance, and drift. We explore the lives and actions of key judges like Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, and Samson, each raised by God to rescue Israel from its enemies. Despite their victories, however, Israel repeatedly falls back into sinful practices, leading to severe consequences. Amidst the moral darkness, the narrative of Ruth and Boaz shines as a light, illustrating God's providence and the preservation of the lineage leading to Israel's future, promised king.Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App! Have you ever felt unqualified to follow God's calling in your life? In this powerful sermon, Brian invites us into the intriguing narratives found in the Book of Judges, focusing on the likely and unlikely heroes Othniel and Ehud. He paints a vivid picture of Israel's cyclical disobedience and God's unwavering faithfulness, illustrating how both judges, though vastly different, demonstrate God's ability to use anyone willing to obey. Othniel, the expected warrior, and Ehud, the left-handed underdog, reveal a profound truth: God does not rely on our perceived strengths or weaknesses; He desires our availability and obedience to carry out His divine plans. Brian encourages the congregation to recognize their potential for impact, no matter their background or personal doubts, drawing attention to the collective power of community in crying out to God for deliverance and guidance. This message resonates deeply as we navigate our own spiritual journeys—reminding us to respond to God's call with the faith that He equips those He calls. Join us as we explore how God is inviting you to step out in faith. Don't miss this transformative message—watch the full sermon now and let your heart be ignited!

Andy Cooley teaches through the stories of Othniel and Ehud in Judges 3. Here we begin to see the spiraling of God's people away from him and his ways, and their lack of consistency in telling the next generation the story of his faithfulness. This leads into story after story of God's pursuit of his people - even when they forget, neglect, and drift away from him. We see in this book that God's anger is actually a sign of his love. His nature is "slow to anger", which means that for him to wield his anger, his people must have gone far away from him. His anger is a sign of his grace and love, meant to bring us back to him.
Chris Yong begins our new series looking at Judges with a call to realign our worship and remember God's faithfulness. Step out in faith like Othniel—flawed but Spirit-empowered - and bring overflowing blessings to all those we encounter.
It's Friday, June 13th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Christians in former Soviet Central Asian nations increasingly face persecution Formerly part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the five “stan” countries — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan — have a mix of ex-Soviet authoritarianism and Islamic nationalism that can be troublesome and even dangerous to Christians, reports International Christian Concern. The region has seen increasing repression of religious minorities during the last few years. Three of these five countries — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan — have seen a sharp rise in the persecution rankings. Even the comparatively less repressive nation of Kyrgyzstan has just this year returned to the Open Doors Top 50 list for the first time in more than a decade. Kyrgyzstan has used special operations police to raid state-registered Protestant and Catholic churches and threatened to banish the entire Catholic Church from the country. In rural Kazakhstan, authorities often pressure Christian business owners to pay bribes. Meanwhile, in neighboring Turkmenistan, a network of secret police and Muslim imams are primed and ready to flush out anyone partaking in so-called aberrant religious activity. In John 15:8, Jesus said, "If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you" Air India plane crash kills 241 aboard with one survivor An Air India passenger plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad at 1:38pm local time, soon after departing for London, reports CBS News. Ramesh Viswashkumar, the sole survivor of the Air India crash, escaped by jumping from the plane, reports India Today. He was in seat 11A. Campbell Wilson, Air India's CEO, expressed his condolences. WILSON: “First and most importantly, I would like to express our deep sorrow about this event.” Officials feared numerous casualties on the ground, as the aircraft had crashed into buildings, including the BJ Medical College undergraduate hostel mess, according to a social post on X. Christian leaders have also offered condolences and are vowing to help the families of the dead passengers, reports The Christian Post. Marines prepare for Los Angeles deployment as protests spread across U.S. California will face off with the White House in court today over President Donald Trump's deployment of U.S. troops in Los Angeles after demonstrators again took to the streets in major cities to protest Trump's crackdown on illegal aliens, reports Reuters. According to the Pentagon, 700 U.S. Marines will be on the streets of Los Angeles by Friday to support up to 4,000 National Guard troops in protecting federal property and federal agents, especially as they round up illegal aliens. Trump's decision to dispatch troops to Los Angeles, over the objections of California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, has sparked a national debate about the use of the military on U.S. soil. Carmen Colado, a former U.S. Army intelligence analyst, spoke out publicly in uniform, condemning her own Commander-in-Chief, reports The Independent. COLADO: “We are not pawns for Donald Trump's agenda. Why now? It's because the military was called upon against the protesters. In our oath to serve, we serve the people of the United States, the Constitution. These constitutional rights are being stripped and just denied. The military will not be pawns to that. “So, I'm calling upon the conscience of military members who served previously and now. We have a duty and moral obligation to say no and resist evil.” In response, patriots have called for Carmen Colado to be dishonorably discharged or court-martialed for publicly criticizing the commander-in-chief's orders. Some argued that her actions constituted a violation of the U.S. military's Uniform Code of Military Justice and called for Article 15 to be invoked against her, which empowers a commanding officer to order nonjudicial punishments less severe than a court-martial. On Instagram, Colado describes herself as the “proud daughter of an illegal immigrant.” House cuts $9.4 billion in funding for NPR, PBS and foreign aid On Thursday, the House of Representatives narrowly voted to cut $9.4 billion in spending already approved by Congress as President Donald Trump's administration looks to follow through on work done by the Department of Government Efficiency when it was overseen by Elon Musk, reports The Associated Press. The package targets foreign aid programs and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides money for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service. The vote was 214-212. This bill was passed at the request of President Trump, who has criticized PBS and NPR for alleged bias. Michelle Obama: Creating life is the least of what reproductive system does On the latest episode of the podcast “In My Opinion with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,” the former first lady said creating life is “the least” of what a woman's reproductive system does, reports the New York Post. Listen. MICHELLE OBAMA: “A lot of male lawmakers, a lot of male politicians, a lot of male religious leaders think about the issue of choice as if it's just about the fetus, the baby. But women's reproductive health is about our life. It's about this whole complicated reproductive system -- the least of what it does is produce life.” Sadly, the former first lady despises the truth of Psalm 127:3 which declares, "Children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb is a reward.” Marcus Rogers, a Christian YouTuber, was horrified. ROGERS: “It's called the reproductive system for a reason. I really believe it's just a very demonic, antichrist spirit that these people are just so obsessed with killing babies. There's so many ways that you can prevent getting pregnant by someone you don't want to be pregnant by. There's so many things that you can do to take accountability. But the reality is these people don't want accountability. “They want to sacrifice their babies on the altar of self. They don't want a baby to inconvenience them. But they don't want to live a godly life where you would avoid all of that being a problem if you just got with the person that God has for you in the first place, instead of sleeping around.” Worldview listeners in South Carolina, Texas and Illinois share their hearts I invited Worldview listeners to share what they enjoy about the newscast in 2-6 sentences. Those 10 Worldview listeners gave a total of $7,506 Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $32,071.20 (People clapping sound effect) That means we still need to raise $29,678.80 by midnight tonight, Friday, June 13th to hit the half-way mark, to stay on the air, and fund our 6-member Worldview newscast team for another fiscal year. Remember, if you are one of 6 final people who give a one-time gift of $1,000, Scooter in Naples, Florida will match you with a corresponding $1,000 gift. Now, if that happens today, we will have raised $12,000. In order to raise the remaining amount, I need to find 15 Worldview listeners who will pledge $50/month for 12 months for a gift of $600. And another 30 listeners to pledge $25/month for 12 months for a gift of $300. The first chapter of Judges starts with a message reminding Israel of their failure to keep the covenant they had made with God. An angel was sent to Bochim (meaning ‘weeping') to provoke this penitent response among God's people. Verses 6-10 tell us that whilst Joshua was alive and those who had been faithfully encouraged by him Israel remained faithful to God. Then the balance of the chapter unveils the cycle Israel experienced. Their sin led to suffering, in which they again turned to God and He raised up saviours (judges). The first 3 judges – Othniel, Ehud and Shamgar have the manner of their deliverance outlined in chapter 3. Whilst the trials we experience are different and may be more due to our own foolishness; and the suffering that we experience may not have been brought by God, yet He has allowed it to happen; do we learn from these mistakes to turn back to our gracious God. One thing they all shared was that in their weakness they were strengthened by God for His deliverance.

How deep is your belief—and is it strong enough to take you to the highest and hardest parts of the promised life? Summary: Robert Lewis explores the depth of belief by comparing it to stepping on a scale: life's challenges and circumstances reflect the truth about our faith. He outlines three levels of belief: Convenience belief – rooted in doing what everyone else does, easily abandoned when faith becomes inconvenient. Comfort belief – centered on the expectation that God exists to make life easy; it fails when life gets hard. Conviction belief – a firmly held, deeply tested faith that endures through both blessing and hardship. Robert uses the life of Caleb as a vivid picture of conviction lived out. Despite his outsider heritage (a Kenizzite, not ethnically Jewish) and harsh beginnings (his name means “dog”), Caleb exemplifies a faith that fully follows God. He doesn't settle for safe, comfortable ground but boldly asks for and conquers Hebron—the hardest and best part of the Promised Land, still held by giants. Even at 85, Caleb claims it not for ease but because it represents the fullness of God's promise. Robert presses listeners to consider: what part of the promised life are you reaching for? The easy lowlands or the hard but beautiful highlands? A life of conviction empowers others, especially the next generation, to follow God courageously. Caleb's faith inspires Othniel, his nephew, who later becomes a deliverer for Israel. Key Takeaways: Faith only at the convenience or comfort level will collapse under pressure. Conviction-level belief is anchored in personal acceptance of God's authority, holy consecration, and reinforcing spiritual confirmations. Background isn't the deciding factor—faith is. A life of deep belief blesses others and endures the test of decades. The promised life isn't won in ease; it's taken through courageous, committed belief. Scripture References: Numbers 13–14 (spying out the land, Caleb's report) Joshua 14:6–14 (Caleb's request for Hebron) Joshua 15:13–19 (Caleb conquers Hebron, Othniel's courage) Judges 3:7–11 (Othniel becomes a judge) John 1:12 (adoption into God's family) Galatians 6:9 (“do not grow weary in doing good”) Suggested Category: Spiritual Growth – The message centers on developing a deeply rooted, enduring faith that moves from mere belief to conviction, with real-life applications for every stage of the Christian journey. In this episode, we explore the historical and biblical context surrounding Israel's second judge, Ehud, during a time when the Israelites once again turned away from God after the death of Othniel. As a result, God allowed King Eglon of Moab—along with allies from the Ammonites and Amalekites—to oppress Israel for 18 years. We dive into the origins and cultural backgrounds of these three groups, particularly the Moabites, descendants of Lot, and their ongoing territorial conflicts with Israel. The story climaxes with Ehud, a left-handed (or ambidextrous) warrior from the tribe of Benjamin, who assassinates Eglon in a daring and strategic move, leading to Israel's liberation. This episode also examines archaeological evidence surrounding the City of Palms (Jericho), the political symbolism of the tribute to Eglon, and the significance of Ehud's actions, which brought 80 years of peace to Israel. Gospel Daily with Josh Weidmann Israel and Othniel: Forget or Follow? Part 1 Series: Judges Scripture: Judges 2:6-23; 3:1-11 Episode: 1235
In this episode, Othniel, the "Lion of God," rises from the ashes of Israel's disobedience to deliver them from the oppressive grip of Cushan-Rishathaim, king of the Mitanni. With a family lineage tied to legendary warrior Caleb, Othniel's story is brief yet powerful—he leads Israel to a decisive victory, securing peace for forty years (or, in biblical terms, long enough to make sure the Israelites forgot why they were ever grateful). As Israel slumbers back into their sins, though, the peace quickly unravels, setting the stage for yet another chaotic cycle. A short reign, but one with enough historical twists to make a king blush. Who said the Bible doesn't have plot twists? Send us a textTime for a deep breath while we look at two minor judges. We can all wonder what the days were like during these judges because we hardly get any information. Reading about two minor judges signals to us it's time for step down in the cycle. Therefore, Erika introduces the story of Jephthah even though he's not mentioned in chapter 10. Remember to look back at the criteria we saw with Othniel and see what's missing in the story of Jephthah. The people failed God and found themselves in hot water. But after crying out to God, He sent help. Then, the people repaid him by repeating their mistakes.A successful Christian walk requires us to identify strong leadership and heed its wisdom. Not adhering to Biblical leadership has consequences.Deliverance follows repentance.Deliverance is temporary without perseverance.God calls specific people to specific tasks because of their specific giftings. Sometimes when God calls you to something, you gotta deal with some dung.

Send us a textIt's time to look at the judges. But before we do, Erika gives us the pattern to look for and explains why it's important when we don't see it.We start with the first cycle - two major judges and one minor judge. Othniel and then Ehud. Ehud was really good, but he wasn't Othniel. When we start the next cycle, the judges will take a big step down.
