Driving South from Abilene to San Antonio, TX, the Talegaters encounter The Black Eyed Children and are visited by The Snallygaster! The Black Eyed Children are a relatively recent phenomenon only dating back to 1996. A local journalist named Brian Bethel claimed that children with completely blackened eyes aggressively insisted he let them into his car but needed permission before entering similar to vampires. The sensation he received from these children were described as “a soul-wracking fear.” Ever since, many testimonies and CreepyPastas have sprouted across the internet with similar encounters, some even claiming the children had bird feet. The Snallygaster is not a Texas Legend, but one that began in Fredrick, Maryland. folklorist, Ed Okonowicz wrote the following description: "The creature has been described as having a very long wingspan, claws with sharp talons made of hot glowing metal. A long, pointed beak, and a third red, blazing eye in the middle of its forehead."  Though the Snallygaster began making American headlines in the early 1920's, their legend crossed the pond with German immigrants in the early 18th century, continuing in Pennsylvania Dutch communities. The word itself stems from the German term, “Schnellegeister,” meaning “quick ghost.”Sarah Cooper voices Snally Fields, the Snallygaster in this episode. Sarah is the chief curator and founder of The American Snallygaster Museum in Fredrick, MD. This week, we hoofed it over to Lake Worth, Texas, just outside of Dallas, for an interview  with their very own semi-aquatic satyr. Lake Worth itself is  a reservoir and recreationional area created in 1914, but it wasn't until 1969 when local teens reported an attack while driving by a horned terror stalking the shore. WE ARE BACK! Welcome to Season 2 of The Talegate Podcast!! Oh, and please excuse that radio interference (it's the second time that's happened). We've picked up a mysterious hitchhiker who relays the haunting and tragic tale of The Lady of White Rock Lake. You have all heard of El Chupacabra, but have you ever heard of their Cajun  cousin, The Grunch Road Monster? This vampire hybrid of canine and reptilian has one large spiked tooth at the center of it's top jaw to puncture and slurp down blood from whatever unsuspecting pray it happens upon. The Grunch is also believed to be more advanced and sophisticated than the typical Chupacabra. Oral stories of The Grunch Road Monster began in the 18th century within a community of free persons of color. It was here where the monster got its name, as it was said to prowl the wooded edges of Grunch Road. The Vampire of Farbourgh Marigny is a similar, if not synonymous form of Chupacabra and was a foe of none of other than the "Voodoo Queen" Madam Marie Laveau. Building on our prior episode, the Devil-Man of Algiers was said to have spawned a "Baby-Devil." Marie Laveau was said to have located the Baby-Devil and castrated it to prevent any future hellspawn from wreaking havoc in New Orleans. Unfortunately, this had the exact opposite effect, as one of the baby-devil's fallen testicles spawned a male Grunch and the other a female Grunch. Really grunched that one up, didn't ya, Madam Laveau?Grunch Road today is a nearly forgotten, unpaved stretch that dead-ends near Little Woods in eastern NOLA. Despite it's rural location, people still venture with hopes of snapping a picture of The Grunch Road Monster. The Grunch has been featured in cryptid books and is the titular figure in The Grunch: a Children's Musical-- although the musical is more a parody of How The Grinch Stole Christmas than a true homage to the Grunch Road Monster. And, for the record, The Grunch was not the Dr. Seuss's inspiration for The Grinch. For photos, cast info, updates, and more, follow us on Instagram @thetalegatepodcast and share YOUR encounters to thetalegatepodcast@gmail.com.See you later, Talegaters!Credits:“Cheese Head” & “Paul Morphy” played by Aaron Sherry“Florida Man” & “Bernard de Bore” played by Harrison Foreman“Gary Grunch" played by Harrison Foreman"High quality, royalty free, elevator music" by Defphonix"Talegate Theme" by Mat JonesWritten & Edited by Harrison Foreman

Things are about to get groovy as we visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 with our special tour guide, "The Witch Queen of New Orleans," Mary Oneida Toups! Follow us as we venture through New Orleans's oldest and most haunted cemetery while socializing with the spirits that dwell there, including "Voodoo Queen" herself, Madam Marie Laveau. We also have a run-in with the Devil of Algiers, so look out!Born in Mississippi in 1928, Mary Oneida married a Cajun Freemason, Albert Toups. In 1968, Mary and Albert moved to New Orleans where Mary's love and passion for witchcraft and the occult blossomed to such heights that she  chartered the Religious Order of Witchcraft in 1972, the first coven to be registered as an official religious organization within the state of Louisiana. Mary Toups said, "the dead walk the alleys of St. Louis No. 1 more than the living. And when I pass over, I’ll certainly be one of them.” Her cause of death is a mystery,  with historians speculating that she was either poisoned or suffered a brain tumor. While it is believed that Mary and Albert Toups are buried in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in a deliberately unmarked tomb, this has never been confirmed. The most famous spirit said to roam the cemetery  is that of "Voodoo Queen," Madam Marie Laveau. Born in 1801, Marie was a free woman of color with African, Native American, and French decency.  Laveau was a Louisiana Creole practitioner of Voodoo, herbalist and midwife who made a lucrative life for herself in New Orleans. Renowned for her healing and wisdom, many naysayers believe she acquired her knowledge from the help of New Orleans elite, and not always by kind tactics. She died in 1881 at 79 years old, peacefully in her bed. The tomb of Marie Laveau is often marked with the "X"s by hopefuls requesting good fortune from her spirit. If their wishes are met, they are to return to her tomb with an offering in repayment. While this is a long tradition of St. Louis, defacing the tomb today will get you fined (just write the "X"s with your fingers). While St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is one of New Orleans's most popular haunted attractions, NOLA is haunted by more than just ghosts. The "Devil-Man" had Algiers in a panic in 1938. Terrorizing drivers, shouting sexist & racist comments to residents, and storming bars demanding free beer to evade eternal damnation. The Devil-Man was an unstoppable nuisance. When police went to shoot the Devil-Man, their bullets were said to have been returned to them by a summoned set of furry hands. Police apprehended a man who called himself, "Lord Herold." Later identified as Clark Carlton, a black man who had traveled to NOLA  all the way from Arkansas. He claimed all of the chaos in Algiers was his doing and that he was sent to New Orleans by the ancient Roman god of the sea, Neptune. Despite admitting to the crime spree, the PD kept getting reports of devil sightings. After that night, the devil made one last appearance in Algiers, as a woman was said to have given birth to a "Baby-Devil."  For photos, cast info, updates, and more, follow us on Instagram @thetalegatepodcast and share YOUR encounters to thetalegatepodcast@gmail.com.See you later, Talegaters!Credits:“Cheese Head” & “Paul Morphy” played by Aaron Sherry“Florida Man” & “Bernard de Bore” played by Harrison Foreman“Mary Oneida Toups” played by Kathryn Baker“Ernest Nathan Morial” played by Greg Hernandez“Maria Laveau” played by Zemelis Samuel“Dev” played by Tommy Schwanfelder"Groovy Retro 70's Vibe Police Theme Music" by Studio Rodent"Talegate Theme" by Mat JonesWritten & Edited by Harrison Foreman

New Orleans is home to Jazz, Po’boys, King Cake, and a seemingly endless supply of festive beads. But it is also home to vampires, cults, and the Immortal Comte de Saint Germain. Join us as we interview the 500 year old man of mystery. Is he a Mason, spy, vampire, alchemist, a lost Romanian Prince, or all of the above? Said to be born in the year 1691, Comte de Saint Germain, or Count St. Germain as he is commonly known in English, was a man of many names. Marquis de Montferrat, Comte Bellamarre, Chevalier Schoening, Count Weldon, Comte Soltikoff, Graf Tzarogy and Prinz Ragoczy, are just a few of the titles associated with  St. Germain. He was contemporaries with the likes of Casanova, Voltaire, Mary Antoinette, and several other notables who found him a most remarkable man. While he was said to make age-defying cosmetics, compose beautiful music, handle wild animals, and even invent his own special color, what sets St. Germain apart from the rest is the evidence of his immortality. Indeed, Count Saint Germain  was said to have died on February 27, 1784, though many who knew him accounted for his appearances many years following his death and there is speculation that he fakes his death for Masonic missions or perhaps even more devious things. Evidence of his existence has littered history even as recently as the 1970s.Check out more on these topics by listening to The Talegate Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or any other fine podcast directories; and please rate, review, and subscribe. From baby killers to a vengeful wife who took a page straight out of Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado, this old haunt serves up scares along with its famous braised brisket flatbread. We also discuss some of Mississippi’s First People and the ancient pyramids they left behind! The Plaquemine people were some of the first inhabitants of the Mississippi territories. They were great builders and would create mounds atop defunct structures, to build new structures on top of the old. While not proper pyramids, there are several mounds of structures on structures to this day. Living on the land as far back as 700 CE are is the Natchez tribe who are distant relations of the Muskogean Creeks. They still live on, though predominantly in Oklahoma due to displacement by Jackass Jackson's Trail of Tears. They had a class system and weren’t afraid to marry outside of their own. Unique still is that it were the female bloodlines which mattered in the family, not the male. Speaking of structures and Natchez, this area is home to King's Tavern, the oldest standing structure in Mississippi dating back to before 1789 when Natchez still roamed the land.
