Crisis of Contamination: Toxic PFAS in our Great Lakes

Six years ago, families in Marinette and Peshtigo, Wis., got the news that would change everything, for them, and eventually the whole state. PFAS from firefighting foam produced for years at nearby Tyco Fire Products had infiltrated groundwater, creeks, streams and drinking water wells across the area. Now University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers say they've linked contamination in Lake Michigan's Green Bay to Tyco. But it's an issue that goes far beyond Green Bay. PFAS have been found in water bodies and drinking water sources across the state, including Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison, Rhinelander, Marshfield, Manitowoc and Wausau, often near airports and airbases where training with firefighting foam has gone on for decades. While two types of PFAS chemicals called PFOA and PFOS have been phased out in the U.S. and will soon be regulated in drinking water by the EPA, there are thousands more, many of which are still widely used in all kinds of consumer products. Hear what needs to happen next to get a handle on growing PFAS contamination across Wisconsin and the world. Within The Mist

Within the forests outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin resides a fearsome beast described as having "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end". In 1896, Eugene "Gene" Shepherd would search and capture one to display at the Oneida County Fair to the amazement of 1000s of spectators. This would lead to a love affair between the town of Rhinelander and the creature. Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they discover the legends of the Hodag. If it's important, write it down. The printed word has power unlike anything in human history — especially the printed word of God. For 1,000 years it had been unavailable to the common man. The Renaissance changed that forever. This week we will discuss an inspired writer's obsession with what other people wrote; how comedy helped take down the papacy; the pros and cons of the Bible on your phone; and the clever little Rhinelander who started it all. Hal Hammons is the preacher for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook.

Tim Michels won Wisconsin's GOP primary to face Gov. Tony Evers in November. Mandela Barnes won the state's Democratic Senate primary. And two incumbent Northwoods sheriffs will hold onto their offices, fending off challenges from within their own departments. Then, Rhinelander City Administrator Zach Vruwink announced his resignation Monday. He's the sixth administrator to leave since 2015. Finally, Gov. Evers announced the Department of Corrections has selected a site for a new youth prison.

Within The Mist

Within the forests outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin resides a fearsome beast described as having "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end".In 1896, Eugene "Gene" Shepherd would search and capture one to display at the Oneida County Fair to the amazement of 1000s of spectators.  This would lead to a love affair between the town of Rhinelander and the creature.Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they discover the legends of the Hodag.Mishipeshu - https://greatlakes.guide/ideas/meet-mishipeshu-the-underwater-panther-in-lake-superiorThe Hodag and Other Tales of the Logging Camps - http://www.lumberwoods.com/hodagthebook.htmRhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce - http://www.rhinelanderchamber.com/the-hodagPine Barrens Institute - https://pinebarrensinstitute.com/cryptids/2018/8/18/cryptid-profile-the-hodagSupport the show

It's a good thing that director Lear deBessonet and producer Clyde Valentín have extensive experience in community-engaged participatory art — nine years ago she founded the acclaimed Public Works program at the Public Theater in New York City; he was the inaugural director of Ignite/Arts, a renowned community-arts incubator in Dallas since 2015 — because the scope of their newest project, One Nation/One Project, would overwhelm most artists and administrators. One Nation/One Project, a partnership with the National League of Cities, is a truly national multi-year health-and-wellness initiative. Over the next two years, 18 communities scattered throughout the country will create hyper-local participatory and collaborative art works that in July of 2024 will be shared with a national audience. It's a hugely ambitious project, a reimagining of the 1930s Federal Theatre Project, that looks to capitalize on a well-documented fact, namely that participating in the arts makes individuals and communities healthier.Among the first cohort of nine sites that One Nation/One Project recently announced is the Kenan Institute's very own community of Winston-Salem and surrounding Forsythe County. The Institute is working with several local partners — including the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, Forsyth County Department of Public Health, United Health Centers and the City of Winston-Salem Department of Community Development — to support the program. The other eight communities chosen are Gainesville, FL; Chicago, IL; Utica, MS; Providence, RI; Rhinelander, WI; Harlan County, KY; Edinburg, TX; and Phillips County, AR, focusing on the cities of Elaine and Helena. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Lear and Clyde describe how they conceived and designed their ambitious project and share their hopes for the national healing the 18 local creations might engender. https://www.onenationoneproject.com/
