Are you gripping the reins too tightly? Have you ever felt the need to control every aspect of your life, only to realize that control is just an illusion? Today I speak to Sharon Hodde Miller, Pastor, Speaker, Author, and PhD about the often-unacknowledged desire for control. Together, we explore the seductive nature of control, how it often creates illusions of security, and the hidden costs of clinging to it. Some takeaways from our conversation are: Control is an Illusion: We might think we have more control than we actually do, but true control is often fleeting. Exploring the limitations of our influence can be a liberating step. Surrender & Agency: Letting go of control doesn't mean giving up agency. It's about finding the sweet spot between healthy boundaries and trust, recognizing that relinquishing control can lead to greater peace and flexibility. Cost of Control: Clinging to control can manifest in anxiety, stress, and unhealthy relationships. Sharon highlights the benefits of surrendering control and embracing the power of trust in fostering healthy connections. We also discuss the theological and cultural roots of our obsession with control. Sharon offers practical advice for exercising agency instead of constant control. She also challenges us to embrace the benefits of surrendering control in our personal lives and relationships. Let us know how you are letting go of control by tagging us at @sharonhmiller and me @biancaolthoff. XO, B RESOURCES/LINKS Guest Sharon Hodde Miller Book: The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, the Anxiety It Gives Us, and the Real Power God Promises Quote The most free we ever were was not in the absence of boundaries, but because of them. Takeaways Control promises security and peace, but it ultimately betrays us, causing anxiety, complexity, and division. The desire for control has theological roots in the story of Adam and Eve and cultural roots in a society that constantly promises control. Letting go of control is important because it costs us more than it gains us. Instead of control, God gives us agency and influence to exercise within the boundaries He has set. Restoring boundaries, such as limiting phone usage, can help us exercise agency and let go of control. Surrendering control can strengthen relationships and build trust. ⋇ Convoy of Hope - Empowering Women and Girls Together Donate here ⋇ Bianca's new book Grit Don't Quit: Developing Resilience And Faith When Giving Up Isn't An Option ⋇ The Grit Don't Quit Bible Study is now available. ⋇ So grateful to our sponsors! In this compelling episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, host Ginny Yurich sits down with author and pastor Sharon Hodde Miller to explore the intricate relationship between control, anxiety, and our modern world. Sharon shares her observations on the rising levels of anxiety, particularly among college students, and delves into the cultural shifts that have amplified these feelings over recent years. Sharon discusses how our constant access to technology and information has lowered our tolerance for unpredictability and uncertainty, exacerbating anxiety when we attempt to control the uncontrollable. She challenges listeners to reflect on their own habits of control, particularly through technology, and offers insights into the high costs associated with these behaviors. As Sharon unfolds the paradox of control, she reveals that the more we try to control, the less in control we feel, often straining relationships in the process. She highlights the alarming trend among Gen Z, who despite being physically safer than previous generations, experience unprecedented levels of anxiety. Throughout the conversation, Sharon provides practical wisdom on living within limits and boundaries, guiding children without controlling them, and becoming a non-anxious presence. She emphasizes the power of agency over control, urging us to trust in character and resist the use of fear and shame to manipulate others. In a world saturated with the "me" mentality, Sharon shines a light on the pervasive impact of self-centeredness across every facet of our lives. It's a message that infiltrates our friendships, marriages, and even our faith, fracturing each in unique yet profound ways. Pursuing self-improvement often leaves us joyless, our souls diminished, trapped in the cycle of perpetual insecurity. Sharon helps us unpack the intricacies of "image management," exposing its corrosive effect on relationships, where individuals are reduced to mere reflections of our own self-image. Through personal anecdotes and profound insights, she guides us through the labyrinth of toxic thought patterns, offering tangible strategies rooted in God's attributes for healing and restoration. Sharon challenges us to shift our gaze away from ourselves, unveiling a path of profound healing and freedom in loving God and others. Together, we explore the delicate balance between self-care and self-neglect, emphasizing the inherent worth of embracing our identity as beloved daughters of God. How do you lead when your own story is full of pain? What is the cost of control when it comes to ministry, leadership and marriage? For Ike and Sharon Hodde Miller, learning to navigate the difficulties in ministry these past few years since church planting and a pandemic has led to some insight into their own hearts. As an adult child of an alcoholic, Ike began to see the way his past was impacting his leadership. Sharon started to notice how her desire for control came at a cost to her soul and her relationships. Together, they have done the important work of healing their own wounds and stories while recognizing what they needed to let go of in order to be healthy leaders of Bright City Church in Durham, NC. In this honest conversation, Ike and Sharon talk with Aubrey about how to lead in a divisive climate, what happens when we reach for control as leaders, and the importance of boundaries in marriage when we lead together. Whether you're a leader in ministry, business or your home, this episode will encourage you to do the vital inner work to bring healing to your interior world so that you can lead out of health and wholeness.   Sharon's Website: www.sheworships.com Ike's Website: www.ikemiller.com Sharon's Instagram: www.facebook.com/sharonhoddemiller/ Ike's Instagram: www.instagram.com/ikefmiller/ Sharon's Twitter: twitter.com/SHoddeMiller Ike's Twitter: twitter.com/Ikefmiller Sharon's Facebook: www.facebook.com/sharonhoddemiller/ Ike's Facebook: www.facebook.com/Theological-Interpretation-112291517027768/ Book: The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, The Anxiety It Gives Us, and The Real Power God Promises  Pastors, looking for a way to establish a path to healing and redemption within your church? I knew I wanted to ask Sharon to endorse my book right away and was so thankful that she said "yes." Here's what she has to say about "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church & the Church Needs Women:" "In our current culture, the Church is not known for its virtues. When stories of corruption and scandal seem to emerge every week, it's no wonder people are staying away. Thankfully, these stories of church failure are not the full picture. In pockets of faithfulness all over the world, God's people are showing up to be Jesus' hands and feet, and Ericka is telling this story. While the Church is not perfect, it is still a place of healing and calling, which is why I am so grateful to Ericka for beckoning women home." Sharon turned inward and realized she was having big control issues at home with her kids and shouldn't be homeschooling them.  17:50 – Overwhelming information Every time we open our phones to check social media or the news, we are being overwhelmed with information. 24:05 – Constant access to media There's constant negativity on social media, and that makes some people feel a level of control. Hey friend! Today, I welcome back to the show one of my dear friends, pastor, author, and speaker, Sharon Hodde Miller. This much-needed conversation about our craving for control and what happens when we don't deal with it gave me so many things to think about, and I think it will do the same for you!  Be sure to listen in to hear as Sharon shares how the advice she heard about handing control over to God (while entirely true, biblical, good, and important even) wasn't exactly helpful as she struggled to navigate life in the middle of the pandemic… as a wife, mom, and church planter.  Sharon realized that it wasn't just that she didn't have control but that it would cost her dearly when she tried to have it. So much wisdom is found in what she discovered…. I promise you don't want to miss out on this eye-opening conversation! Sharon pastors Bright City Church in Durham, NC, with her husband, Ike. She is also the author of three books, travels around the country speaking at churches and conferences each year, and holds a Ph.D. on women and calling.  Listen in to learn more about: How control is an illusion that will break more than it fixes in our lives and relationships. Identifying the red flags that could indicate controlling behavior and ways to address them. How our generation brings our control issues to the internet instead of God. Favorite quotes: ~Whenever we feel anxiety, we reach for control to soothe that anxiety. But control is not able to do that. What it actually does is exacerbate our anxiety even more. ~God does not give us control but he gives us agency. Agency is power with limits. ~Make room so that you can actually pay attention to what's going on inside of you. Don't turn on podcasts, audio books or music when you are in the car, just sit in silence when you drive and then name accurately what's going on inside of you . Very often it's not something outside of you, it's something spiritual going on inside of you. ~We were created for security and stability and so whenever we feel that fear, that overwhelm; that is our soul recognizing there is a dissonance with the world around us. You may feel like you can control every situation, but it will come at a high cost. It's never too late to turn a controlling habit into a trusting one. In this episode, author and speaker, Sharon Hodde Miller shares from her newest book, The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, the Anxiety It Gives Us, and the Real Power God Promises Us. Co-pastoring a church with her husband, Ike, control felt like something that brought security and peace, only to find anxiety and a high cost as the true outcome. Sharon helps us all loosen our grips on control and to trust the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us. Sharon points us to the truth that whenever we reach for control that God has not given us, we are making a "devil's deal." Jesus has already offered us the best deal of all, and when we put our trust in Him, we find what we have been searching for has been with us all along. This episode is insightful, and convicting-you won't want to miss it! Important Takeaways from Show Adam and Eve reached for more control, which resulted in anxiety, shame, and division. Every time we reach for control that God has not given us, it will cost us something. Adam and Eve did not have control of the garden but exercised agency over it. We cannot control the chaos, but we can order it with systems and processes. The less we control the more we experience the power of the Holy Spirit that we already have access to. We cannot control the soil of a person's heart, but we can have influence whether we are softening or hardening it. Whenever we reach for control that God has not given us we are making a "devil's deal". Jesus has already offered us the best deal. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (Acts 20:24) God is dependable, he is faithful, and He is enough. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." John 14:27 Links from Show Join the Insider Club - Joanna's launch team!
