In this episode, Dave and Ashley Willis, alongside hosts David and Anne Wilson, share their journey of navigating marriage, mental health, vulnerability, and the struggles that come with facing hidden struggles, such as anxiety, depression, and pornography. The conversation is deeply personal as they explore the challenges they've faced in their own marriages, offering listeners practical advice and powerful stories of grace and healing. The episode opens with a humorous and warm exchange between the hosts and guests. Dave and Ashley Willis drive down from Atlanta to Orlando and talk about their marriage ministry, which has flourished through Facebook, podcasts, and other online resources. They began with a simple Facebook page called "Marriage," later rebranded as “Naked Marriage.” This title, while provocative, is grounded in the biblical concept of "naked and unashamed," emphasizing the importance of emotional intimacy in marriage. They highlight the idea that marriage should be a place of full vulnerability, where secrets are laid bare, and trust is developed.Ashley shares a personal story about the struggles with anxiety and depression she faced early in their marriage. For years, she kept her anxiety a secret from Dave, feeling deep shame. However, after a painful moment of realizing she couldn't carry the burden alone, she finally confided in Dave. His patient, understanding response played a pivotal role in her healing process. This moment is a beautiful example of what it looks like when partners support each other in marriage, choosing presence over the need to fix.The conversation then turns to the topic of pornography, which, despite its prevalence in society, remains a taboo subject in many marriages. Dave shares his own battle with pornography, acknowledging the secrecy and shame he felt, and how it became a significant obstacle in his marriage. He describes his initial decision to keep his struggles hidden from Ashley, believing he could overcome them on his own. However, when Ashley discovered his secret years later, the initial confrontation was intense, filled with emotions of betrayal, anger, and shame. Over time, with grace, accountability, and the support of each other, they worked through the difficulty together. The couple discusses the ongoing challenges that many couples face regarding pornography in their relationships, and they emphasize that it is a problem in and out of the church. They point out that while it's a difficult issue to confront, bringing it into the light is the key to finding freedom and healing. The episode wraps up with an invitation for listeners to access their free eBook, Nine Days to Great Sex, a resource designed to help couples break free from barriers like pornography and rediscover intimacy. It's clear from this conversation that both Dave and Ashley, as well as David and Anne, have made it their life's mission to help married couples build trust, communicate openly, and develop deeper emotional intimacy. In this episode, Dave and Ann Wilson talk with Sam Allberry to discuss a key aspect of identity and self-worth, focusing on how our understanding of being ""in Christ"" reshapes how we view ourselves and others. The conversation starts with a personal reflection on social anxiety and the desire to impress others in social situations. The hosts share their experiences of walking into rooms of strangers and feeling the need to prove themselves. There's a candid exploration of the insecurities many people face, especially when dealing with social situations and a lack of self-confidence.Sam Allberry shares his journey of shifting from a mindset focused on impressing others to understanding who he is ""in Christ."" Anne Wilson echoes this sentiment, highlighting how one's identity in Christ offers freedom from the need to seek validation from others. The conversation moves into the idea of being ""self-forgetting"" rather than self-absorbed, with a significant mention of Ray Ortlund's advice: ""There you are"" as a mindset to adopt when entering a room, instead of ""Here I am.""The conversation dives into the role of identity in relationships, especially marriage and family life. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing our union with Christ and with others who share that union, which impacts how we relate to both fellow Christians and people who may not yet know Christ. The hosts discuss the significance of church fellowship, pointing out that, even in difficult times or personal struggles, the church community is vital for spiritual growth and encouragement. The guests reflect on how understanding and believing in who we are in Christ helps us navigate our relationships, particularly in healing broken relationships or experiencing spiritual abuse. A moving moment occurs when the hosts talk about a woman who gradually learned to trust again through the support of close friends and church members, showing the slow yet steady process of healing and growth. In the final moments, the hosts emphasize that transformation in Christ takes time and requires the support of a Christian community. The conversation concludes with a reminder that ""being in Christ"" means not just a vertical relationship with God but a horizontal relationship with others who are also ""in Christ."" This mutual connection is foundational to the Christian faith, underscoring the importance of fellowship and encouragement within the body of Christ. Lauren Hungate joins us on today's episode of Stories Behind the Songs. Lauren has been writing for some exciting newer artists like MacKenzie Porter, Carter Faith, and Lauren Watkins, as well as household names like Anne Wilson, Carly Pearce, and most recently, Bailey Zimmerman. In this episode, we explore her story, from starting out as an intern with Capitol Christian, navigating Nashville writers' rounds, and earning her first publishing deal right before the world shut down in 2020. She shares what it was like to perform alongside Carter Faith at the Opry, join Carly Pearce on stage at Bridgestone, and have her songs cut by rising stars like Anne Wilson and MacKenzie Porter. Her song “Holy Smokes” released by Bailey Zimmerman just went platinum and she recounts the inspiration behind it—a memory with her husband parked by a church, blending the sacred with the everyday. Tune in as she reflects on balancing faith with ambition, the mentors who helped her succeed, and advice for other young songwriters on how to navigate Nashville and make the most of every writing room. With standout songs like “Greener Pastures” and her latest single, “Coming Home to You (Bigger Houses),” this episode will inspire and entertain anyone passionate about music. If you liked this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. On today's show, we chat with 4 time guest, Matthew West! Matthew West is a five-time GRAMMY nominee, NSAI's 2022 Songwriter-Artist of the Year, ASCAP's 2023 Golden Note Award recipient and a multiple ASCAP Christian Music Songwriter/Artist of the Year winner. He has received an American Music Award, a Billboard Music Award, K-LOVE Fan Awards, GMA Dove Awards and has been named Billboard's Hot Christian Songwriter of the Year. A recipient of the Rich Mullins Impact Award, West also received a Primetime Emmy® Award nomination for Original Music & Lyrics for the title track for the feature film “The Heart of Christmas.” Dubbed “one of Christian music's most prolific singer-songwriters” (Billboard), West has been awarded RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications and notched 35 number one songs combined as an artist and songwriter.   In addition to his own recording career, he has co-hosted the K-LOVE Fan Awards seven times and has more than 250 songwriting credits to his name, including cuts by Anne Wilson, Rascal Flatts, Scotty McCreery, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, Mandisa, Danny Gokey, Casting Crowns and others. The release of Don't Stop Praying marks his 13th studio album. Composed of 12 inspiring tracks, West encourages listeners to commit to the power of prayer in 2024. West's most recent single "Don't Stop Praying" released earlier this year marks his biggest streaming single debut in his 20-year career.  Adding author to his list of accolades, West has written eight books to date: “Come Home For Christmas,” “Give This Christmas Away,” “The Story Of Your Life,” “Forgiveness,” “Today Is Day One”,  “Hello, My Name Is, “The God Who Stays” and his latest, My Story Your Glory 30-Day Devotional with one more slated for 2024. He is also passionate about providing hope and healing through the power of prayer and story. Along with his father, Pastor Joe West, they founded popwe, a non-profit ministry helping others to craft, share, and live a more meaningful life. Don't Stop Praying IS OUT NOW!  Matthew says, “EACH SONG IN ITS OWN WAY IS INSPIRED BY THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRAYERS WE FIND OURSELVES PRAYING THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES. WE PRAY PRAYERS FOR STRENGTH WHEN WE ARE WEAK, PRAYERS FOR A MIRACLE WHEN WE NEED A BREAKTHROUGH, PRAYERS FOR PURPOSE WHEN WE FEEL LOST. MOST OF ALL, I WANTED TO MAKE A RECORD THAT ECHOED THE CALL I HAVE FELT IN MY OWN HEART TO HIT MY KNEES LIKE NEVER BEFORE AND NEVER FORGET THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT CONVERSATION I COULD HAVE TODAY AND EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE IS WITH THE ONE WHO MADE ME, KNOWS ME, AND HAS THE BEST PLAN FOR MY LIFE. I HOPE THESE SONGS INSPIRE YOU TO DISCOVER FOR THE FIRST TIME OR MAYBE REDISCOVER THE POWER OF A PRAYER.” matthewwest.com @matthewjwest christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys

Hit songwriter, Emily Weisband, joins Caroline for this episode of Get Real. When Caroline heard Emily's “Champagne & Sushi” she literally hit her knees and wept. She has never in her life felt more seen. She has lost 5 pregnancies and it is truly the saddest, most isolating, devastating experience, that you go through ALL ALONE as a woman. Yes of course your partner, family and friends are there and ache with you, but it's a heartbreaking solo journey. Emily wrote a song that captures every feeling a woman feels who goes through miscarriage. It's a true masterpiece. But that's what Emily does. To Caroline, and many others in the Nashville creative community, Emily is a musical genius. Her ability to capture raw human emotion and put it into song takes your breath away. She has written songs for Chris Young, Sheryl Crow, Anne Wilson, Jeremy Camp, Dasha, Danielle Bradbury, Lily Rose, Gabby Barrett, Camila Cabello, Hillary Scott, Noah Cyrus, Lauren Alaina, FGL, Sam Hunt, Dan & Shay, Old Dominion, Keith Urban, Darius Rucker to name a few. And with each song she writes, she lets the listener see themselves in the story, feel seen and a little less alone. It was so healing having such a raw real conversation with Emily all about the real, raw, often painful yet beautiful life experience.  Follow Get Real on IG: @GetRealCarolineHobby Follow Caroline Hobby on IG: @CaroHobby  Follow Emily Weisband on IG: @EmilyWeisband Have a question for Caroline??   The ladies from PLUSH are bringing their show to the Token Lounge on Saturday, August 3rd. I was lucky enough to catch up with the band, for the first time since their appearance at last year's RIFF Fest. We discussed a lot of topics with Moriah, Bella, Ashley, and Faith, including Moriah's addiction to fishing. "It's really peaceful and relaxing to me," she said. It's the opposite of the 'band life'. We talked about the tour they did earlier this year with Disturbed. Moriah spoke up first "That was absolutely incredible." Bella chimed in "Everyone in the Disturbed camp was incredible" Moriah also got to sing the song 'Don't Tell Me' each night with the band, in place of Anne Wilson who sang it on the album. She described it as a super surreal moment. Speaking of Heart, the ladies covered the classic 'Barracuda' from them, but haven't heard from the legendary rockers yet. "They have not, but that would be super cool if they did!" What do they think of the term "all-female rock band'? Moriah said, "I think at the end of the day, we are just a rock band out there doing our thing." Bella added, "We've seen such a drastic change, seeing so many women dominating the rock scene." She said they're proud to be part of the female movement in rock. By the way, Bella spoke about the crazy way she joined the band after seeing a Facebook post. Faith spoke to her about joining the band too. Moriah is such a great singer! So good, she's been touring with TSO for the last couple of winters. "It's just amazing. It's a way different experience, and I'm just proud to be a part of it." Thanks for listening!

As you move through time, you exist as a present self who makes decisions, an in-between self who should carry out those decisions, and a future self who will benefit from those decisions. Yet as we all know, in-between self often fails to follow through on what present self resolves, leaving future self pretty bummed out.The solution to this dilemma, my guest says, is for your present self to become much better friends with your future self. His name is Hal Hershfield, and he's a professor of marketing, behavioral decision making, and psychology, and the author of Your Future Self: How to Make Tomorrow Better Today. Hal and I spend the first part of our conversation taking a really interesting philosophical dive into what the self even is. We talk about why our future self can feel like a stranger, why it's hard to know what he'll be like, and what this dilemma has to do with becoming a vampire. We then discuss how building a stronger connection with your future self makes your present self more willing to help him, and how you can become closer to your future self by engaging in mental time traveling. Hal shares a couple techniques that can facilitate this mental time travel, three mistakes people make in taking this cognitive trip, and how to start making tomorrow better today.Resources Related to the Podcast"The Self Is Moral" by Nina StrohmingerTransformative Experience by L.
