191. Susan Piper's Story (From Fame-seeking Songwriter to Nursing Home Music Minister)

Host Sue Duffield's guest, Susan Piper, is a Christian singer, song and story writer who spends her days in nursing homes, wielding a guitar with her right hand and pushing her Havanese pup in a stroller with her left, continually being ministered to by the ones she seeks to serve. Sue met Piper at a Christian conference almost twenty-five years ago, and that meeting made quite an impression on both. Piper sings and speaks for retreats, women's luncheons, family events and church outreaches. Her new book, "A Blessing Is In It", contains the God-journey and stories of this once alcoholic to creative communicator of the gospel. "I visit them but they open their hearts to me. I ask them about their lives and they tell me their stories; sometimes it's the same story again, but it is so important it bears retelling. I knock and they are glad to see me. I offer myself as a stranger and they welcome me in without question. If the hymn is worthy of tears they cry; it was their mother's favorite, it was played at their daughter's funeral. They don't or can't hide their feelings, they are who they are. They follow me down the hall; they say they were sad before I came and please come again because I've made their day. They have done more than that for me. They've changed my life.  Excerpt from "He Leadeth Me," A Blessing Is In It By Susan Piper  www.susanpiper.com www.sueduffield.com

It's Thursday, February 6th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Gunmen shot and killed pastor during Sunday church service Gunmen, affiliated with a cult group targeting Christian communities, shot and killed a 54-year-old pastor in Nigeria, Africa on January 19th. Pastor Yomi Adetula was at a Sunday morning service when he died. A local leader told International Christian Concern, “Adetula was a man of God who dedicated himself to serving the community. We face challenges from groups that oppose spiritual efforts, and we must advocate for greater awareness and collective action to protect the rights of Christians to worship freely.” Nigeria is ranked seventh on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian.  Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Kyrgyzstan further restricts religious liberty A law went into effect this month in Kyrgyzstan that further restricts religious freedom in the central Asian country.  The new religion law bans unregistered churches as well as sharing one's faith in public. A Protestant leader told the human rights group Forum 18, “The new law does not make anything better or easier for us to practice our faith, but makes it more difficult. I have stopped believing in any improvements in the laws or in the attitude of the government towards us Christians.” Argentina withdraws from World Health Organization Argentina announced yesterday it is pulling out of the World Health Organization. Through a spokesman, President Javier Milei said, “We Argentinians will not allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health.” The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to leave the World Health Organization last month. Both countries accused the organization of mishandling health issues like the COVID-19 pandemic.  Pam Bondi confirmed as U.S. Attorney General The U.S. Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as the next U.S. Attorney General. Trump's pick passed with a vote of 54-46 along party lines. Only Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted with the Republicans.  Bondi previously served as Florida's Attorney General. During her confirmation hearings, Bondi called out the Biden administration for targeting Catholics, concerned parents, and pro-lifers. BONDI: “Going after parents at a school board meeting has got to stop. For practicing your religion, sending informants into Catholic churches must stop!” Trump's Executive Order: “Keeping Men out of Women's Sports” President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday entitled, “Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports.” As the title suggests, the order protects women from having to compete against men, pretending to be women, in sports at schools and colleges. The order coincided with National Girls and Women in Sports Day. U.S. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said, “This executive order restores fairness, upholds Title IX's original intent, and defends the rights of female athletes who have worked their whole lives to compete at the highest levels.” Trump created a government-run sovereign wealth fund On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a government-run sovereign wealth fund. The U.S. would join other countries around the world with such an investment vehicle owned by the government.  Prominent examples include Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the China Investment Corporation, and Norway's Government Pension Fund. Trump suggested a U.S. sovereign wealth fund could be used to buy the social media platform TikTok. CeCe Winans wins two Grammys And finally, CeCe Winans, a Christian singer, received two more Grammy awards over the weekend. She won “Best Gospel Album” and “Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song,” bringing her number of Grammys to 17. Winans is known for her song “Goodness of God.” “And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God "I love Your voice You have led me through the fire In darkest night You are close like no other I've known You as a Father I've known You as a Friend And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah “ 'Cause all my life You have been faithful, oh yes You have And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God” Winans said, “Winning a Grammy is always an incredible honor, but to be recognized for music that uplifts and inspires makes it even more special. I'm beyond grateful to God, my team, and the amazing supporters who continue to believe in the music and the message.” Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 6th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. The biggest thing for me because it's what I need the most and then I hope it helps other people, is just to wake up to all the ways God is making overtures to us, whispering to us, reaching out to us. And so you know, I think that the big three of goodness and beauty and truth...these you know, that old-fashioned idea that there's these three transcendentals and they're like little radar pings from the God of the universe and they ping in our soul. Any chance that I can in any kind of writing or communication go: Look there's something beautiful! or Look here's something true! or Look at the possibility for goodness that still exists in image bearers, people made in the image of God! Anne Wilson is beautiful inside and out. The singer and songwriter from Kentucky has seen some of her songs rise to popularity quickly and her ability to create meaningful melody and lyrics are one-of-a-kind. I found her by accident, searching for songs about the Church. That's when I stumbled upon her song, "Sunday Sermons." I liked it so much, I decided to listen to her whole album on Pandora. Then, I was hooked! I rarely listen to a full album or get attached to one artist, but there was something about Anne that got me good. I was so excited when she agreed to come on the podcast and our conversation doesn't disappoint. Even as a 20-year-old, our conversation encouraged me as a Momma! When she talks about how her parents raised her, and her own faith journey before and after the death of her big brother, Jacob, I was moved and grateful. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up in the church, but not always loving it Anne's unexpected journey to singing (which began when she first sang publicly at her brother's funeral) The art of songwriting and how her creativity works Her heart for the Lord and why she'll always use music to reach them Anne's role models and inspirations Tune in and enjoy one of my favorite episodes of the podcast! Have you ever experienced something difficult and began questioning God? Maybe even doubting His goodness, grace, and faithfulness? Starting to ask Him the ‘Why' questions, like “God, Why are you allowing this to happen to me?” Today's Built Different Guest, Christian singer and songwriter, Danny Gokey, is no stranger to challenge and difficulty. After losing his late wife, Sophia Martinez, to complications during her third surgery to treat her congenital heart disease, Danny was left broken and uncertain of what was to come. Yet, in those moments God encouraged him to reframe his ‘Why' questions into ‘What' questions… Rather than “Why me?” he began asking “What can I learn in the midst of my pain?” or even “God, what is your will so that I may begin walking in it?” It's amazing what God can turn our pain into. Just four short weeks after losing Sophia, Danny tried out for American Idol and placed in the top-3 sparking what we now see as one of the most decorated Christian music careers in history! He was also remarried to his current wife of over a decade, Leyicet, and together they have 4 beautiful children! Danny's heart and music rests in reminding us that God is for you and not against you. He has a beautiful and perfect plan for your life. And He can turn your pain into your greatest purpose if you let Him. If you're struggling to believe and see it with that perspective today, maybe you just haven't seen it yet. Keep on believing!

Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” But let's be honest with ourselves, it can be really hard to “have faith” during times of uncertainty, transition, and challenge. Yet during these difficult moments, we must remember that true and genuine faith in God can be forged in the valleys of our journey. God wants us to press into Him during these times more than ever! Hebrews 11:6 goes on to remind us that “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Today's Built Different Guest, is no stranger to understanding what it means to step out in faith even in the midst of uncertainty. Today's guest is world renowned Christian singer and songwriter, Micah Tyler. Micah knew he was called to ministry at a young age, but it wasn't until his late 20's that he felt the Lord calling him into music! After literally selling over half of what he and his wife owned at the time, they devoted their lives to following and trusting the Lord's leading. Even in the midst of fear, difficulty, and sometimes frustration that they experienced, God continually showed up and provided like He always does! My friends, we can always have faith, because of the hope that Christ offers us. Hope is never lost, sometimes it just needs to be redirected. Why? Because Hope is a person. Micah believes that living out your faith will ultimately reflect what it means to be DIFFERENT in our world today.

Show host Paul Gibbs talks with Christian Singer/songwriter Ricky D. Broniste about his life, music, and ministry, and shares several of Ricky's songs on the podcast. From Ricky's Bio:It took a bout of envy to get me from only knowing an E chord on the guitar to actually playing rhythm guitar in a band. A life lesson caused me to discover guitar was a chick magnet. This began a four year stint with Rock and Heavy Metal Rock bands (1969-1972). Numerous house parties, school dances, outdoor concerts and biker gang gatherings. The final biker gathering, though well performed, ended badly. Traumatic enough for me to leave secular bands and begin writing songs for God. The bikers had adopted the band and considered us property. Yeah, they threatened my life but, I quoted my dad's favorite phrase "guitarists like me are a dime a dozen"; easily replaced. I don't think that saved my life. God changed their hearts from killing me or beating me severely. God's grace spared me, so He could fulfill His plan for my lifeSongwriting for me began with a high school Creative Writing class I took during the Fall semester of 1969. By late 1976, I had written 36 love songs about girls once adored by me. All of them were demoed but, later rewritten to contain Christian lyrics instead. As time went by, guitar playing became many instances of Christian worship leading within church groups, street witnessing and home fellowship gatherings. Musician's Fellowships led to three Christian band formations and memorable moments. Time well spent. In and out of those bands, I wrote additional songs. Twenty-one of my thirty-three songs became the copyrighted compilation titled "The California Years". After remarriage in 2003, Crystal and I then moved back to our birth state of Missouri in early 2005. By August of that year, I began recording one by one the songs from The California Years. Attending Missouri churches, I once again was worship leading again with only a couple of street witnessing events. Working full-time left very little time for the studio but, God helped me do many things spontaneously; without hours of rehearsal. The internet became my mission field in early 2013, with my music/artist/band page getting started on Facebook. The Christian songs waited until the blues renditions had tested the waters before, fully using Facebook as an outreach. On September 2nd 2015; those blues tunes got onto Christian Internet radio and "Psalm 148" & "No Respect of Persons" got airplay, later that month.Links:On FB: https://www.facebook.com/Ricky-D-Broniste-535655679793991www.notespireradio.comwww.notespiremusic.comwww.paulgibbsmusic.com

You asked, we listened: this is the kick-off episode of our For the Love of Music series! We’ll hear from artists of all stripes and genres, and find out what inspires them to create songs that touch our hearts like nothing else can. No doubt today’s guest has given you goosebumps a time or two. Whether it was her stunning rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” that launched her to fame in the mid-80s, or when she belted out gospel classics like “We Shall Behold Him,” Sandi Patty is a vocal force of nature—but, ironically, she never felt she had a true voice in her own life. Today Sandi tells us some deeply personal, tragic and triumphant stories she wrote in her book “The Voice: Listening for God’s Voice and Finding Your Own.” Sandi shows us despite the darkness we face and despite others who may try to silence us for their own gain, our voices are valuable and worthy to be shared—and when we do, we’ll likely find a community of others waiting for a relatable voice to help them through their own darkness.

Our special guest is Kelly Minter, an author, speaker, songwriter, and singer. She is passionate about women discovering Jesus Christ through the pages of Scripture. Whether through song, study, or spoken word, Kelly desires to authentically express Christ to the women in a culture where so many are hurting and broken. She is driven to share the healing and strength of Christ through the Bible's truth. In her own words Kelly talks about her upbringing and life. My parents raised me along with my three younger siblings in Northern Virginia, which is an important distinction because it means D.C. metro, traffic, and politics more than the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the Minter home, although our family didn’t always get it right, we mostly got it real. As a child, I struggled with acute anxiety and waves of depression before I or the people around me had much language or help for such things. The Word of God became my balm. This is one of the reasons I love the Bible so. In my twenties, I moved to the Nashville after signing a record deal. Soon after unloading all my belongings, I got used to the perks of the south—a then slower pace and novelties like cheese grits. If I’d written the rest of the story, the next few paragraphs would include the heights of happiness and fulfillment as a result of success and notoriety. But that’s not what happened. I poured myself into three records—but instead of fame and fortune, pretty much everything I’d put my hope in unraveled before me. I eventually ended up with an opportunity to write a book, which is now out of print—so that went well, too. I was looking to people, career paths, and success to fill me, but whatever splashed into my bucket only leaked out. I had a bunch of those ‘cracked cisterns’ in my heart that are mentioned in Jeremiah—the kind that obviously don’t hold water. Maybe you can relate? Around that time LifeWay asked if I’d be interested in writing a Bible study. I was equal parts thrilled and overwhelmed by the opportunity. (This was around the same time when I’d run into people I hadn’t seen in a while and they’d say encouraging things like, “Oh do you still live here?”) Since the Lord was deconstructing just about every false god I had in my life at the time, I wrote about what I knew and what I needed to learn—the idols I was trusting for worth and meaning. I thought it a good idea to invite real people to my house to pilot the material I was writing—people who would tell me the truth. We cooked and ate together, dug through Bible passages with intensity, prayed with one another, and laughed for hours. (That was before everyone started having kids). Shortly thereafter, No Other Gods was published. What followed, quite unexpectedly for me, were invitations to speak at churches across the country, a few more books, teaching local Bible studies, and the opportunity to lead worship at my home church and abroad. So did a trip down the Amazon in a riverboat.  As in…the real one in the jungle, my friends. I’d been invited on a riverboat adventure to serve the forgotten people of the jungle. My comfortable, western lifestyle and mindset was challenged at every turn. Since then, I’ve traveled to the jungle numerous times with an organization called Justice & Mercy International, and I’ve since written a book about it. I sit on the board of JMI, and I’m a passionate supporter and participant of their annual jungle pastors’ conference. The invitation to be on mission with God, both here and abroad, is one of the greatest joys of my life. Today I’m grateful for the opportunities to study and teach the Word of God—the very words that have changed my life. I’m also thankful to be singing and writing music, bringing it all together at an event called Cultivate. Other joys include teaching the Bible to the younger generation and serving them coffee in weighty diner mugs (the younger generation must understand the weight of the diner mug—pun absolutely intended).

Beckah Shae, a Christian music artist, with a heart for the younger generation, and a songstress with her own original hits, also remakes popular secular songs that young folks are listening to... Shae has redone songs like Taylor Swift's Look What You Made Me Do and Ed Sheeran's Shape of You, with lyrics about the Lord, the truth of the Bible, the wicked works of our Adversary, etc. Most recently she has taken Havana by Camilla Cabello and turned it into Hosanna. Shae’s cover songs are going viral and she’s reaching new records for daily views on Youtube. But is her approach Biblical? Listeners chimed in on Facebook with answers to that question and their responses ranged from “Yes, as long as the lyrics are clean its harmless” to “No, what’s born of the flesh is flesh and what’s of the Spirit is Spirit” and everything in between. It’s generated quite debate. So in this episode Troy examines the Scriptures to see the Biblical view of music, its power, its purpose, and our partnerships in creating it. In the year 754 the first pope ever to cross the Alps came to a small chapel in what is now northern France and prostrated himself before the king of the Franks, beseeching him for military aid. The pope came with singers from the Roman song school. When he and the king signed 'treaties of peace' together the foundations were laid for what has long been known as Gregorian (or better 'Frankish-Roman') Chant. This is the music of a trans-alpine Western Europe beginning o revive, albeit very slowly, after the withdrawal of Roman imperial power. No activity marked this broader horizon more potently, or more often, than the daily celebration of Gregorian chant by priests, deacons and singers. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-christian-singer-charlemagne-and-beyondGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. 25.000 Frauen in Österreich leben mit einem erhöhten Risiko für Brustkrebs.
