Resetting our relationship to alcohol Host Curtis Chang and author Ericka Andersen mark Ericka's fourth year of sobriety by asking a thought-provoking question: How's your relationship with alcohol? Together, they explore the challenges of alcohol dependency, why it might be time to reevaluate your connection to drinking, and how to lovingly support others on the same journey. Using the metaphor of alcohol as a “person” woven into our memories and social experiences, they explore the grief that can accompany “breaking up” with alcohol and how the Spirit of God's still, small voice is sometimes drowned out by cocktail hour. If you've ever questioned whether your life might be better without alcohol, this episode offers practical insights and gentle encouragement to take a closer look.   Download our free January reset guide https://bit.ly/4gBXjiW Send your Campfire Stories to: info@redeemingbabel.org   Resources or references mentioned in this episode: Ericka's 10 Tools to Find Freedom  From Alcohol  We Are the Luckiest: The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life by Laura McKowen Detox.net's complete drinking habits study Washington D.C. has the highest percentage of heavy drinkers When a church leader confesses a substance abuse problem (an interview) This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness by Annie Grace The Luckiest Club: online sobriety support community   More From Ericka Andersen: Follow Ericka on Instagram HERE Read ericka's Substack HERE Check out Ericka's website: HERE Ericka's Wall Street Journal piece about Binge Drinking

We're thrilled to introduce our friend Ericka Andersen—a freelance writer, mom of two, lover of Jesus, and passionate sobriety advocate from Indianapolis. Ericka's story is one of incredible resilience: a journey from the grips of alcohol addiction to celebrating over four years of sobriety, all while staying deeply rooted in her faith. In this episode, we dive into her unique perspective on addiction, faith, and self-discovery—a conversation that's both eye-opening and beautifully relatable. Ericka opens up about her journey, sharing her early experiences with alcohol and the complicated generational ties that shaped her relationship with drinking. From the pressures of high school and college parties to the “work hard, play hard” culture as a young professional in Washington, DC, she explains how she found herself in a cycle that seemed normal but left her feeling deeply conflicted. Even while meeting every marker of outward success, Ericka quietly struggled, constantly questioning her drinking habits, the strain they placed on her spiritual life, and the toll on her well-being. She also discusses the strength she found in supportive communities and the importance of creating safe spaces for honest conversations about alcohol and faith. With the holiday season around the corner, Ericka offers heartfelt advice for anyone wrestling with sobriety during a time full of social gatherings and expectations. From staying grounded in faith to embracing community support, her message is a reminder that freedom from alcohol isn't just possible—it can lead to a fuller, more joyous life. The Washington Times reported last week on a story out of the United Kingdom. A man by the name of Adam Smith-Connor, a 20-year Army veteran, was arrested for anti-social behavior. Taken to court, he was convicted and fined nearly $12,000 and given 2 years of probabtion. What was his crime? Well, Adam Smith-Connor was standing on a street where there was an abortion clinic, with his back turned from the abortion clinic, he closed his eyes, bowed his head, and clasped his hands while he prayed silently. When confronted, he was arrested, taken to court and convicted. Now if he had been standing in the same posture, in the same location, but thinking about a math problem, or how to get to his next location on Google Maps, he would have been fine. His crime was, he was talking to God. They decided that that was harmful to the abortion clinic, convicted him of anti-social behavior, and this case becomes a precedent for the first ever thought-crime conviction in the United Kingdom. He's guilty…of thinking thoughts of which the government does not approve. Well, that could nnever happen here, right? Well, let's talk. Women are leaving churches in record numbers at higher rates than ever before. Yet, all of us are in need of healthy community more than ever. What is causing this mass exodus and how can the Church and women recognize their need for one another? Journalist and author Ericka Andersen wanted to know why and started to investigate the staggering statistics. In turn, she found the deeper reasons such a vital part of the body of Christ was finding its way to the exit. She offers an explanation of why this is happening plus an encouraging call for women to reengage in the Church in her book, Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women. There she encourages women to see not only their need for Christ-centered community, but also the Church's need for the unique gifts of women. In it, she also shares her personal journey with alcoholism and how the Church played such a vital role in her own healing. In this episode, Davey sits down with Ericka to discuss how women are leaving the Church at faster rates than ever before, how the anger of those who leave is often not against God, and why it is so important to go first and create a safe space for people to share their stories with vulnerability. If you've found yourself ready to quit the Church because of the wounds that people have inflicted upon your or if you've left Church and don't know how to take the first step back towards community, this conversation will encourage you that even in its brokenness, the people of God are an integral part of our lives of faith.   Website: https://erickaandersen.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ericka_andersen/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ErickaAndersenSylvester Book: Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women Would you love to help those in your church partner with God to take back their stories of pain and trauma? All Things

For the first time ever in history, American women are leaving the church faster than men. Millions have left over the last decade, and that was even before the pandemic. Research shows they have left church but they still value their relationship with God. What's going on?Ericka Andersen joins us on today's episode of All Things to discuss this issue, as well as Reasons to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women—as her new book is titled. Ericka and I ponder the reasons women have left the church. We live in an increasingly post-Christian society, and the religion of self-help is on the rise. Ericka says secular self-help gurus offer a replacement for religion—but it's not sustainable. She thinks our attraction to self-help is going to soon run its course, as people are realizing they need more than what's inside of them to get by. Ericka says church is often misunderstood. She says church is relationships, friendships, a safety net, where you feel like you have people on your team, and where we learn about God. She says, “When we get together with others we see a part of God that we cannot see ourselves.” Further, “It is the church that God uses to save people—it's through the witness of the church that people are drawn to Jesus.”We also tackle church hurt and religious trauma. And we talk through different scenarios for conversing with our friends who've left. Ericka helps us imagine how we might invite a friend back to church who has left over politics or shame or sheer busyness. She says the number one reason people return to church is because someone invites them. Ericka exhorts us, “Be someone's introduction to to Jesus by being there for them without expecting anything in return.” One bonus element of this episode is when Ericka talks about her journey to sobriety—her transparency is such a gift! Today we're discussing the "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act," which was passed by the House yesterday. This bill would enforce that babies born alive in attempted abortion procedures receive medical care to help them live or admit them to a hospital. Unsurprisingly, all but one Democrat opposed the bill. We look at some of the debates from the House, namely from Democratic congresswomen who think the bill is extremist. One even claims Scripture as evidence for her pro-choice beliefs. We also look at a referendum the House passed that aims to hold the Biden administration accountable for attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers. Then, we're joined by Ericka Andersen, author of "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women," to discuss the need for women in the church and why they should feel urgency to go back. COVID also led to decreased church attendance as people got comfortable sitting in front of televised services in their pajamas. Today on The Healthy Way Series we are exploring the role of in-person church and its value in our lives. Author and church expert, Ericka Anderson Sylvester, offers insight into how to find the right church for you or your family, what to do if your spouse or children don't want to go with you, and why it's never too late to return to a church body after being absent. If you have been considering going back to church, or attending church for the first time, this episode will be encouraging. Hey friends, and happy Friday! Cheers to the second episode of The Happy Hour 2023! I have a first-time guest on today, Ericka Anderson, and she has listened to all five hundred and fifty-one episodes of The Happy Hour! Ericka is a mom, wife, freelance writer, and podcaster who recently wrote a book called “Reason to Return,” focused on the topic of women leaving the church. 16 million American women have left the church in the last decade, and Ericka shares a few reasons why. Some of these reasons include trauma, busyness, and church hurt. Other women may leave the church because they feel unseen or alone in their current season of life, such as single women not feeling like their needs are being met. Erica even shares her story of church trauma. I'm telling you, her experience is something worth listening to, even if it's really hard to hear. For most women that walk away from the church, it's not usually because they have a problem with God; it's the people who have hurt them. After all, churches are full of broken, sinful people  – you and me included! But Ericka's hope in writing “Reason to Return” is to help draw women back to a body of believers, one that is good and healthy for them to be a part of. Ericka and I wrap up our conversation with a beautiful story about the friend Ericka had in mind when she wrote this book. This specific person was absent from the church completely. While Ericka was still writing the book, that woman walked into a church one day and gave her life to Jesus! What an answer to prayer! While Ericka's friend didn't read “Reason to Return” before that day, I pray this story brings you hope that there are Jesus-loving people in a church somewhere, ready to welcome you (or someone you know) into their church family. If you or a loved one is in hard church season, I pray you'll pick up a copy of “Reason to Return” and see how Ericka's story might minister to you. Connect with JamieFacebook //  Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

Despite a Supreme Court case changing the law, many birth fathers are still unaware that they must register on a putative father registry in order to have input in their child's future. In this episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by http://erickaandersen.com/about (Ericka Andersen), a freelance writer, digital marketing professional, and host of the podcast Worth Your Time. Ericka explains that the historical background prior to 1972 combined with the unfair stereotype associated with birth fathers often results in the birth mother alone making the decisions for her child. Ericka notes that most people are just as curious about and in need of a relationship with their birth father as they are their birth mother, but they rarely have access to the necessary information to make those connections. Abandoned by his father at age two, Rick Sylvester lived with an abusive mother whose struggles as a member of the working poor led her to drugs, alcohol, theft, and prostitution - and eventually attempted suicide. Rick battled depression, anxiety, and PTSD as the chaos, neglect, and unpredictability of his childhood seemed to doom him to follow in his mother's footsteps. Well into adulthood, Rick stumbled through unemployment and divorce, using drugs and alcohol to numb the pain until he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Miraculously, though, he overcame the odds and today is a happy husband and father. How did this happen? Rick's answer is this: "It was the Lord.” A message of hope to those who are drowning from an undeserved childhood, Leaving Cloud 9: The True Story of a Life Resurrected from the Ashes of Poverty, Trauma, and Mental Illness speaks to millions who grew up poor, feeling ignored and hopeless, and who need the healing power of God.
