v25 – The entire messagePaul wants them to know the full message and not just part of it as it is this that will bring freedom and an end to all the false teaching that they were hearing.Remember they were being told that Jesus Christ was not enough. You had to add extra spirituality to your life to please God. The message was Jesus plus other things and Paul has been trying to explain that it’s all about JESUS and he is enough. It’s JESUS plus nothing!36 times in Colossians Paul mentions that we are in Christ/Of Christ/From Christ and with Christ. Jesus is central to the whole book just as he is central to the Christian Faith! Also the local Jewish churches were advocating that the gentile churches were somehow second class churches because they did not have the rich tradition of the old testament and understand the law and the Jewish heritage. No longer is God a God who is found only in the temple but he has come to live in our hearts, Jew or Gentile! We need to understand the place of the gentiles in Jewish history to fully understand why this was so important and one of the best ways to do this is by looking at the Temple arrangements. Most Holy Place – Could only be entered once a year by the High Priest who would offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. The Holy Place – Could only be entered into by The Priests.Between these two rooms was the curtain which separated the two. This was more like a wall than a curtain and was 60’ high 30’ wide and between 4-6” thick. No light was allowed to penetrate the curtain and it had to completely cover the most Holy Place. When it was taken down to be replaced it took 300 people to change it over!Outside these were the Courts of Israel then a wall, then the courts of women and another wall, then the gentiles were outside these courts, as far away from the Holy Place as you can imagine. That’s where you and I would be today if Jesus hadn’t come! When Jesus comes and dies on the cross he fulfils the role of the High Priest once and for all timeHebrews 10:11-12The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world and that is why it is so important that when Jesus died the curtain was torn from top to bottom – it was no longer needed!Matthew 27:45-46v50–52The curtain came down because it hindered access to God’s presence. The whole point of Jesus coming was to restore our relationship to God. Access is no longer in a building made by hands, it’s by the Holy Spirit in your hearts. He now wants to come and tabernacle in your hearts. Christ in You, no matter who you are! This is God’s promise and the secret that has been revealed by Christ coming!Hebrews 10:16-23This is great news but there is even more says Paul. This is the mystery that has been revealed to the Colossian Church – Christ in You, the Hope of Glory. It’s the same mystery that has been revealed to us. The entire message from God – Jesus has fulfilled the law, fulfilled the role of the high priest and our sacrifice, once for all time. You now have access to the father every day, not through a building or a Holy Place, but through your heart. Christ lives in you! Sons and daughters of the King!Matthew Henry“This mystery, now made known is Christ in you, the hope of Glory. Christ is the hope of Glory. The grounding of our hope is Christ in the world. The evidence of our hope is Christ in our hearts”Ephesians 2:19-22Questions1. Do we understand the role of the temple in Jewish History and why it was so important to the Jews?2. Jesus dying and the veil being torn in two has huge significance for us as Christians. Have a look at what this means for us and the role of the old temple?3. Christ In you, the Hope of glory. Let God speak to you about what this means for you as a Christian. What does this set us free from?4. Should this knowledge change our thinking and how should it affect our daily Chris
Although ASEAN has been under fire for its powerlessness in the face of several human rights atrocities such as attacks on Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar, internal ASEAN officials, some of whom have lengthy human rights activism experience, remain optimistic that the association can be a force for good. What do they actually see in ASEAN’s non-interference and consensus principles? Why do they keep on appeasing the Myanmar Government while violence raged in Myanmar’s Rakhine State? Why do member states tend to be more closed off in ASEAN forums than in the UN forum? And more questions. Doing the hard work never sounded so good. We turn to some veteran creatives this week for the antidotes to antic times.Drive-By Truckers' "American Band" Takes On A Mad World - 1:48Ever since coming together in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, The Drive-By Truckers have reinvented southern rock and its assumptions about identity and tradition. While the band has seen plenty of personnel changes over the years, the heart of the Truckers' sound is the musical partnership between Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood. The band played their entire new album, "American Band," for a lucky audience in the OPB studio, and talked about some of the stories and recent events that drove the song-writing. Contest Time: Flash Fiction From Tin House's Master Book Of Plots -14:54Portland/New York publisher Tin House is re-publishing an astonishing writers’ tool from 1928, called “Plotto: The Master Book of All Plots.” Author William Wallace Cook detailed some 1,462 plots to help struggling writers. Tin House held a national contest a few years ago with the first re-publication, and they’re doing it again this month to celebrate the paperback. For five weeks, beginning October 19th, Tin House will post a new plot each Wednesday, and writers will have until the following Monday to write a 500-word story based on it. The five winners will read their stories on State of Wonder, and we'll announce the grand prize winner. PAM's Big New Modern Building -20:40The Portland Art Museum announced a splashy capital project to build the Mark Rothko Pavilion between its existing two buildings. This $75 million expansion and endowment will be dedicated to painter and one-time Portlander and art museum student Mark Rothko. Equally exciting: Rothko's children have offered to loan rotating major works by the modernist master over the next 20 years.PNCA President Don Tuski on Challenges Facing the College - 21:52The new President of PNCA had barely been on the job two months when the college announced the suspension of its Critical Theory and Creative Research MFA program. Think Out Loud spoke with Tuski about why the move was made just days before classes were scheduled to begin. Tuski also addresses the need to boost student enrollment, the benefits of an art education, and his approach to making the most of PNCA's new home at 511 Broadway. Artist Malia Jensen on "Ground Effects" -27:31It's been great having contemporary artist Malia Jensen back in town. Since her return from an eleven-year stint in New York, she's shown work at Reed College's Case Works, Wieden + Kennedy, and collaborated with the dance ensemble Body Vox. Jensen's practice crackles with ideas and wit, delivered with a high level of craftsmanship. We talk to her about her October exhibition, “Ground Effects,” on view at Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland.Chloe Eudaly and Steve Novick Cross Swords On Housing -36:46The race for Portland City Council is heating up. Steve Novick, previously an environmental lawyer and political advisor, is seeking another term. Challenger Chloe Eudaly is an owner and co-founder of the ‘zine and bookstore Reading Frenzy. Ceramics Meets Rock & Roll at the LH Project -38:45Located at the base of the spectacular Wallowa Mountains, the LH Project has been called the Shangri-la of ceramics. Jakob Hasslacher founded the residency to bring world-class artists to one of the West's most stunning landscapes, but one group that's especially close to his heart returns year-after-year: veterans.Art Beat Serves Up Chris Antemann's Forbidden Fruit -48:17Ceramicist Chris Antemann has developed a gorgeous, eye-popping style of porcelain figures that shatter the dainty, mannered image of Neoclassical porcelain. Her alliance with the legendary German porcelain manufacturer, Meissen, has pushed her onto an international stage and a wider world of collectors.

These two chapters are very familiar to most believers, and even a lot of non-believers. Most of us have heard and/or read about the last day of Jesus’ life on earth many, many times. But have you ever really caught what Matthew 27:52 and 53 said? Have you given these two verses any thought? Here they are again: 52The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. Ok, so I have to admit that the first images that come to my mind when I read these verses was heavily influenced by our culture’s fascination with zombies and the TV show “Walking Dead”. So sue me. My brain is not 100% spiritual. I admit to being influenced by the media. I am in the world, but I am not of it. Of course, the risen saints were nothing like zombies. We are told very little about them, but I’m quite sure that they looked exactly like they looked when they were alive the first time. Otherwise, what good would it have done for them to go into the holy city and have them appear to many people? So let’s take a closer look at what happened here. Just after Jesus died, scripture says that the curtain of the temple was was torn in two, from top to bottom, and there was a great earthquake. Rocks were split, and the tombs were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs *after his resurrection* they went into the holy city and appeared to many. Notice the timing there. *After* Jesus’ resurrection, they went into the city. So in keeping with prophecy, Jesus was the first to be resurrected, and then these saints. Jesus conquered the grave, not only for himself, but for all who put their trust in him. As I studied this event, I found that there are different opinions about who these people were. Note that these are only opinions, because we aren’t told, but it is interesting to think about. Some think that it was the ancient patriarchs. Others think that they were believers from that time period…those that had seen Jesus but had died before he did. We don’t know. Also, some think that after these saints went into the city and showed themselves they returned to their tombs. Others, that they were resurrected in the same type of body that Jesus did, to die no more, and when Jesus was taken up to heaven, they went with him. That we have such a small amount of information tells us that God wants us to focus on the resurrected Christ. That we are given only this short mention tells us that the resurrection they experienced awaits us as well, that it was not only for Jesus. That death is not the end, but only the beginning of a brand new life. There is indeed life after death. Death is nothing to fear if we have put our trust in him! Your thoughts?
Making meaningThis is an honest effort on my part to talk about the process of creating work that says what you mean, or to put it another way, keeping your work within the boundaries you've set according to your personal values and goals. The book that sparked this introspective podcast is Darkroom to Digital, by Eddie Ephraums. The supplied link takes you to the Amazon page. Eddie's home page is still under construction.I spend a few moments talking about Socrates and his statement "the unexamined life is not worth living" because it encapsulates the need of the creative individual, if not every individual, to consider the meaning and purpose of their life. You can read a concise summary of his trial here.On page 26 Eddie’s book I look at 5 questions he asks himself as an artist, to clarify his goals. I highly recommend it, regardless of what medium you work in. His writing style is straight forward and concise. It’s the kind of writing that brings new understanding each time you read them.Taking chancesI feel like I'm still getting my bearings creating this podcast. I also feel that perhaps it was premature to wander away from concrete and technical matters, such as production issues and class schedules. And yet, I've also made a commitment to myself to experiment and take risks. That includes embracing the sure possibility of failure.A couple of quotes I often think of regarding failure are "if you're going to fail, fail boldly" and the other is "It isn't the falling down and failing that is the problem, it is the falling down and not getting up". I could do a podcast on interviews with people on failure, how they cope with it, what it means to them, failures that have shaped their lives. Not a bad idea.Introspection and soul searching are going to occur from time to time throughout this podcast as I try to figure the meaning of what people are telling me and whether it's something I can, or should integrate into my own life. I didn't see any distortion in Soundtrack, but it was hitting 0db continuously. I used the Levelator from Gigavox media to see if it made a difference. The audio sounded fuller and I can see it made changes, but it was still running too hot. I looked at the modified audio in Soundtrack and the levels looked fine. Maybe there's a setting in Garageband that's off.I'm going to trust Soundtrack, and by extension Levelator and put the podcast out as it is. Let me know if you think the levels are still too high. If anyone has any experience with Levelator let me know how it's treating you. I don't want to rely on a black box, I want to know how to control audio in a program like Soundtrack Pro or Pro Tools. Right now, I'm going to be satisfied knowing I'm not blowing out anyone's eardrums.Send comments or emails.
