In this inspiring Radio Maine interview, Nick shares how photography became a lifeline in his recovery from traumatic brain injury and substance use disorder, guiding him from solitary nighttime shoots to a vibrant artistic community at the Bakery Photo Collective. His work, including the acclaimed book Portlanders, blurs the line between documentary and fine art, inviting viewers to see the city's complexities: its flaws, its resilience, its humanity. Portland’s Third Angle New Music will debut a new commissioned piece at its upcoming show on April 16 at OMSI’s Kendall Planetarium. The composition, called “Spheres,” was written for percussion quartet and three American Sign Language performers. Deaf and hard of hearing audience members can experience the program through haptic vests that translate the sound from the instruments music into physical vibrations. The vests were developed by local nonprofit CymaSpace, which aims to make arts and culture performances accessible to Portlanders who are deaf or hard of hearing. Sarah Tiedemann is the artistic director of Third Angle. She joins us to talk about the new show and accessibility in the arts.
Earlier this year, Portland saw an alarming spike in cases of shigellosis, which you probably recognize by its less-specific, historical name: dysentery. Why did an illness most closely associated with the Oregon Trail pop up in modern-day Portland? Today, executive producer John Notarianni talks with Oregonian homelessness and mental health reporter Lillian Mongeau the connection to our growing unsheltered homelessness crisis and the reason some well-meaning Portlanders seem to oppose the very simple measures that could help stop its spread. “Geography is everything” for digital creator Geoff Gibson. The Portlander’s YouTube channel explores population geography and how that affects cities, states and countries. Some of his video essays have millions of views including pieces about the Cascadia Subduction Zone and why some parts of Oregon and Northern California have few people living there. More recently, Gibson covered Astoria and why it never became a major hub like San Francisco. We learn more about “Geography by Geoff” and how it struck a chord on social media.

The best part about living in Portland Oregon is being surrounded by amazing and awesome comic creators. The town is sick with them, and they are wonderful people. It is even better when you are reviewing a book written by a fellow Portlander. Matt Fraction is an award winning, media content creator. Having worked in all of the big companies, Matt has written some fantastic books that have put him on the map. The 2012 Hawkeye series, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, Sex Criminals, Casanova, and of course Fantastic Four and FF. On top of all of that, Matt has also started to work in television. Starting as a creative consultant for the Hawkeye TV series and then as an executive producer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. A good guy who is creative, intelligent, and interesting. If you have not delved into the work that this creator has developed, I highly encourage you to take a chance and pick up his work. And, if you see him at a comic con, say hi. If you see him in the supermarket, leave the guy alone. He just wants some bagels. Earlier this month, the City of Portland and Multnomah County released data and survey results about Portlanders’ experience with ranked choice voting. According to the survey, 91% of voters said they understood how to fill out their ranked choice ballots. But only 55% of voters in East Portland’s District 1 turned in those ballots, compared to rates of turnout that ranged from 74 to 76% for the other three districts. District 1 voters were also more likely to turn in ballots that had no candidate for city council selected, and nearly a quarter of D1 voters surveyed said they had no awareness of ranked choice voting. City officials acknowledged that more work needs to be done to reach voters of color and to better understand the low voter turnout in District 1. The lack of engagement may also be a result of decades’ long neglect for the needs of East Portland voters in City Hall, according to José Gamero-Georgeson, a D1 resident and volunteer at East County Rising, a political action committee that supports progressive candidates in East Multnomah County. He is also the co-chair of the Portland Government Transition Advisory Committee. Gamero-Georgeson joins us to share his perspective on how to engage and boost participation among voters in East Portland.
Portland’s historic charter reform resulted in nearly 100 candidates running for a seat on the expanded city council and 19 Portlanders running for mayor. For those running for office, Portland’s Small Donor Election program promises to match funding to donations and provide their campaigns with taxpayer dollars. Exactly 52 candidates qualified for the program this election cycle. But reporting from Willamette Week shows some of the “creative” ways candidates met the threshold to receive funds, from mutual donations between candidates to hiring nonprofit organizations to collect donations for them. Sophie Peel is a reporter for WW and has been following this election closely. She joins us to share more on the role the Small Donor Program played this election and how it compares to other cities with similar programs such as Seattle.

From homelessness to a budget crisis, Portland officials will have a lot to navigate as they take office. This year, Portlanders used ranked choice voting to decide the next mayor and council. Names like Lonnie Mayne, Buddy Rose and Dutch Savage may not be familiar to some today, but for fans of Portland’s professional wrestling scene of the 1960s to early '90s, these were some of the headliners that sold out the old Portland Sports Arena. As first reported in Slam Wrestling, two Portlanders have been working to preserve the history of the Pacific Northwest wrestling scene and making sure these names and more aren’t forgotten. Rich Patterson is one of these historians and a video wrestling archivist. Kerby Strom is a fellow historian of the scene as well as a collector of memorabilia. He also recently had recovered footage played at the Hollywood theater earlier this week. Strom and Patterson join us to share more on the history of the city’s wrestling scene and what they’ve found while collecting.
