What we covered: 1.So you've just recorded a course for us on play-based training - why did you feel compelled to create it? 2. In the course you cover a lot of scientific background as well as giving 50 great playful examples of play in action - can you give us a couple of nuggets here? 3. You have created a play profiling sequence for people in the course - why is this necessary? Don't we just play the games? 4. There are 6 practical sections in the course aimed at different populations... why? 5. What are your thoughts on using play in our industry generally - are there better environments than others? A little bit about JP... After burning out aged 34 while running his own furniture company and losing his mother to cancer a year later, JP listened to his true calling, joined the fitness industry and became an award-winning educator, speaker and industry mentor. JP's mission is to show how we are mental, emotional and physical beings, and that nothing can be studied or affected individually. Having sworn for many years that he'd never have children, JP is now a father of four, demonstrating that life is always available for review, new learning, growth, change and adaptation. Since turning 40, JP has managed to defy gravity and grow 1cm taller, thanks to the elasticising effect of myofascial movement and ViPR creating more space in his joints. Key expertise: - Award-winning educator, speaker and mentor. - Delivers webinars and practical workshops internationally. - Teaches in a way that is down to earth, engaging and connected, with a fair degree of humour thrown in.

Today's a really enjoyable episode because I am talking to someone of vast insurance market experience who is getting a shot at putting that deep knowledge and acquired wisdom into really useful practice Greg Massey has had an insurance career spanning four decades that culminated as Head of Programs at Zurich North America. On his retirement in 2022 he became an adviser to VIPR to help the company with its US expansion plans. This is a great match because in this role Greg is able bring his experience to bear to introduce US Delegated authority and programme management industry peers to the products and solutions that VIPR has been providing to that same community in the London Market for almost 15 years. Greg is a great professional and this podcast is a masterclass on best practice in the application of technology for solving core operational problems and generating a genuine data-driven edge in this burgeoning market segment. Greg is also excellent company and is incredibly open and generous with his insights. Half an hour with him will fly by and give you a large number of practical ideas you can apply to your own business. LINKS https://www.viprsolutions.com/

The Voice of Insurance

Today's guest is VIPR's Client Services Director, David Butler. On this show I speak to lots of CEOs and that means my guests are sometimes quite far removed from the day-to-day solving of problems for clients. David's job is to be as close to the client as possible, finding out what their real problems are and therefore what they really need. It's then his job to make sure that what VIPR are providing those customers with is exactly what's required – and more importantly that customers have all the training and support to make sure they can get the maximum benefit out of a product and can adapt and reconfigure it effectively as their business develops. All this means is that he probably has his finger closer on the pulse of what is worrying carriers in the market than almost anyone around. So as the market digitises and looks to analyse the new data pools that it is collecting and apply new technologies like AI at many different points in the value chain, it is people like David who are going to be doing all the heavy lifting. David is a technology specialist with just under 30 years' experience and his insights into how to make the most of all the exciting new tech at our disposal or just coming onstream, is hugely valuable. He's also a really friendly person who has spent much of that long career explaining complicated ideas in ways that are really easy to understand and that's why I can heartily recommend a listen today. NOTES I promised to look up what the common computing term BUS stands for: BUS is an acronym for Binary Unit System. These are used to used to transfer data around a network (a bit like the way a real-life bus moves people about).

Today's guest is Paul Templar, CEO of insurance technology solutions specialist VIPR. VIPR started out in the London Market 14 years ago and it's best known for providing software solutions to the endless administrative problem of the ingestion and checking of data in the Delegated Authority (DA) space. And this goes right to the heart of what Paul and I are going to talk about today. This year is highly significant for carriers writing Delegated Authority business in the London Market because DDM – the system that they use to process this business into Lloyd's - is going to be retired in September. LIMOSS - the not-for-profit body in charge of sourcing and operating common services for the London Market has confirmed the change. So, in just under nine months, a method of underwriting that produces around 40% of London Market premiums is going to take a big step into the unknown. There is an awful lot at stake and a huge amount of work has to be done between now and the autumn. And that's why I am really grateful to have Paul as an expert guide through this potential maze. Paul is a great ambassador for his company and the wider market and I can't think of a better-qualified advisor as the market transitions from a centralised service model to one that is likely to be driven by data standards. NOTES: DDM is an abbreviation of Delegated Data Manager. It traces its origins back to the DA Sats system. The Voice of Insurance

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2023 34:03

Today's guests are Paul Templar CEO and Sebastian Prosser, Head of Account Management at insurance technology solutions specialist VIPR. VIPR started out in the London Market 14 years ago. From day one its core offering was to provide a software solution to the endless administrative problem of the ingestion and checking of data in the Delegated Authority (DA) space. With around 40% of the business at Lloyd's transacted this way, it started life in a very fertile environment that was drowning in a mass of spreadsheets, emails and stray documents. Today it has grown enormously to be the largest player in this segment with over 400,000 bordereaux processed annually relating to around £5 billion of gross premium. This business is at the real coal face of digitisation in our industry and its development is following a ruthless logic: If you can ingest, verify and cleanse insurance data on a large scale, the next step is to start to analyse that data and gain genuine insights into the business you are writing.  And once you can do all this you can also speed up the process of onboarding new partners from a compliance perspective. My chat with Paul and Seb comes as VIPR is making large strides internationally into the US and European markets on the back of significant new blue-chip investment. With digital initiatives gaining traction and prominence all over the insurance world it's an exciting time for the market and for VIPR. Here we talk about the prospects for a far more efficient, digital and data-driven marketplace, the world of insurance software ecosystems and the exciting expansion opportunities opening up for VIPR and its clients. Paul and Seb are great company and I recommend this episode to anyone looking to learn how to climb the first rung of the digital ladder. NOTES Naturally we mention DA a lot. That's the abbreviation for Delegated Authority. There is also TPA, which stands for Third Party Administrator (usually for claims). LINKS https://viprsolutions.com/

Logan has such a diverse background in movement disciplines I felt it was most appropriate to how them on to discuss non-linear training.Think about it, most of the training we see in the gym is dead straight lines. Very non-applicable to the everyday lives we live and the tasks we run into. But while there are internet trolls roaming the web, gasping at exercises that they believe will blow out your back and knees, we need to upgrade our level of time and effort we spend in this direction of education. On this episode, we will discuss non-linear training, how we got introduced to it, how we implement with clients, and how we spice in for workouts when clients are looking to spice it up!

Your Yes Life Now

It Is Important to Honor People's Time About Today's Guest Keith Irace is the Vice President of Group Fitness at Equinox Fitness Clubs, where he has been a member of the team for nearly 16 years. An industry veteran who has held leadership positions and taught classes for over 25 years, he has been part of vibrant fitness communities in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. While a graduate student in his home town of Chicago, a part-time front desk job at a fitness club sparked a passion for the industry. After earning his BS in Communications from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and an MS from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Keith immediately became a full-time fitness professional. A move to Los Angeles led to a 7-year stint as a writer/producer/performer/group fitness instructor (everyone in LA is a multi-hyphenate) after which he returned to a full-time career in fitness with Equinox in 2003. Keith has been certified by ACE and AFAA along with specialty equipment training for ViPR, TRX, Kettlebells, CrossCore 180 and indoor cycling certifications from Schwinn, Stages, Spinning, and Reebok. He has completed the Equinox Pilates Mat certification and completed countless hours of continuing education at conferences and seminars. Keith currently resides in New York, where he is enjoying living in a high rise building, walking places and re-acquainting himself with the weather. Show Notes We begin by sharing how we both met many years ago when I took Keith’s cycle class in Los Angeles. Over two decades later I am still a regular in his class, although now it is in NYC. It was when Keith was in graduate school in Chicago, getting his masters in journalism that he got a part-time job at a fitness club in Chicago working behind the front desk. He would stand behind the front desk and watch the instructors and classes and that became his catalyst to move into the industry. As with many other guests we talk about the importance of finding a mentor and the fact that wherever you are in the industry, there's always someone ahead of you and always someone behind you. That knowledge cannot be owned and when we can ask for help and then later offer help, it becomes a circle of mentorship. We talk about Keith’s career and how over the course of sixteen years he moved from being an instructor, to Group Fitness Manager, Regional Manager and now as VP of Group Fitness. Keith shares that even as VP, he still teaches as it feeds his soul while also giving him time with members. Keith talks about the importance of listening, being present and at the same time honoring other people’s time. He goes on to talk about curating an experience from start to finish, versus simply teaching or coaching a class and the importance of being really thoughtful with everything that you do. Starting with something as simple as just being in the studio early and then anything that you can add that feels like it is a nice customer service touch that you can make as a curated experience of your own. He reminds us that we can learn something from everybody and there's always room for us as we grow and learn from those around us. We move on to talk about the importance of using social media to connect with your clients and students and the importance of being as authentic in your social media profile as you would be in your real life teaching. Keith shares his thoughts on how to succeed, especially when first starting out. He encourages us to find the best team and get on it, because you're going to accelerate your career by being around all the rest of the best people. People become successful together as groups and as teams. If you're not ready to do all of your own program design, find somebody who will give you a leaping off point so that you're doing something that's smart and real and authentic. He also reminds us to get feedback from as many people as we can. Further along in our career, Keith suggests we find a lane and go all in to that area. It may be content creation, it may be management or maybe you create a lane of your own. Keith suggests that we get incredibly good at one thing that will give you a stand out profile. Own your expertise and be an expert at that thing you want to be known for. This will always be a really powerful indicator of your success. Keith also reminds us about the importance of - right time, right place, right brand, right moments. Meaning that just because you may hear a “no” it may only be that the timing was not right. Do not let a short term “no” derail your long term “yes.” Keith shares the importance of self-examination and trusting your gut. To take the time and ask yourself, “what do I need? What do I want?” Along with that, as you move ahead, Keith talks about the importance of constant learning. When we are constantly a student it allows us to keep feeling fresh and full of ideas, inspired to wake up every day and just devote yourself to what you do. We close the conversation with Keith talking about the importance of managing time – your own and everyone else’s. To really manage your day with the discipline of saying, I am going to be on schedule and prepared. As a practice, honor your time, honor your schedule. Honor other people's schedules and it allows you to just be prepared for whatever may come your way. Right time, right place, right moment.

Adding muscle, improving definition or just simply looking better are popular reasons for starting a workout program. The past few episodes of All About Fitness have featured guests who specialize in a movement-based approach to exercise because, whether in sports or activities of daily living, moving better is the foundation for everything else from performance to appearance. Exercise programs that focus on movements like squats, lunges, pushes and pulls as well as multi-planar patterns are not only important for athletic performance but can also help produce a shredded physique. In an effort to discuss how the two approaches can merge to produce the results you want from your workouts I reached out to professional wrestler turned personal trainer and health coach: Giovanni Roselli.   Giovanni aka Romeo Roselli doing his thing in the ring This was a fun interview for me because as a kid growing up in the 80s I was a huge (at the time) WWF fan. To me the wrestlers were real-life superheroes capable of amazing feats of strength and athleticism and were one of the inspirations for starting on my fitness journey in the first place. Giovanni and I met a few years ago and while I don't follow professional wrestling anymore I still have a tremendous amount of respect for the men and women who put it all on the line for their fans. It has been fun getting to know Gio and talking training, specifically how to balance the competing interests of training for performance AND physique. As a wrestler Giovanni competed in the WWE and other circuits under the name Romeo Roselli; he now works as a personal trainer and health coach to help other people learn how to practice healthy behaviors like exercise and getting a good night's sleep. Gio is not just a personal trainer, he is also a master trainer responsible for teaching workshops on how to use exercise equipment like the ViPR and Core-Tex as well as being an ambassador for Pt on the Net - the leading online education resource for personal trainers. If you're not familiar with the ViPR, a relatively new and unique strength training tool, check out this video of Gio with the Trevor and Shawn from Genesis Performance. As a trainer Gio created the Fully Loaded group fitness program for Equinox health clubs. On this episode of All About Fitness we talk about how he trained as a wrestler - a major challenge given the travel and appearance schedule and how he exercises now that he is working full time in the fitness industry. We also talk about the importance of exercise programs that can help you to both look good and improve your overall quality of life. Getting results from strength training requires more than just lifting heavy - it's also extremely important to know a few training strategies that can help ensure proper muscle adaptation. In this episode Gio and I discuss a number of exercise programs, including: Institute of Motion and the 4Q Model of Exercise Programming and Animal Flow   Follow me on: Twitter: @PeteMc_fitness Instagram: @PeteMcCall_fitness www.petemccallfitness.com    Please visit the sponsors of All About Fitness: ActivMotion Bar - let the resistance move you. All About Fitness

If you exercise regularly, how do you decide which ones to do in your workouts? If you're like most fitness enthusiasts then you are most likely following a workout program featuring exercises that focus on individual muscle groups or bodyparts. This approach to fitness comes from bodybuilders who use muscle isolation exercises like biceps curls or leg extensions in an effort to promote the highest level of growth and definition.  The ViPR was designed specifically to focus on movement-based workouts.   Hypertrophy is the technical term for muscle growth; exercise programs where the goal is improving hypertrophy should focus on muscle isolation exercises because they can be the most effective way to initiate the metabolic or mechanical stimuli necessary to promote muscle growth. However, if you only have a limited time for exercise you are better off following an exercise program that focuses on using movement patterns as opposed to exercises designed to isolate a muscle. Here's some food for thought: The only time a muscle works in isolation is in a machine designed for muscle isolation. Any other time you move numerous muscles are working together to produce and control the forces necessary to perform specific movement patterns. Our brains are hard-wired to focus on learning the most effective movement patterns that can provide our daily needs for food, shelter, companionship or physical security. When creating a movement our brain and nervous system will engage a number of muscles simultaneously to execute the pattern. Performing a movement-based exercise program that focuses on using patterns instead of muscle isolation exercises can help improve overall levels of strength, reduce the risk of injury from overuse and increase caloric expenditure (allowing you to burn more calories in less time). Today's All About Fitness Quick Fit Tip focuses on the differences between isolation and movement training and why you should be doing the latter and skipping the former. The most important benefit is that anytime you engage more muscles in an activity you can increase the level of energy expenditure. Moving a weight through space is an effective way to increase total body strength.   Blogs I've written about the benefits of movement-based exercise: ACE Blog: Training Movement, Not Muscles ACE Blog: Training Movement, Not Muscles, part II ACE article: Loaded Movement Training   Thanks for tuning in; for the next few months All About Fitness will be holding a drawing from all people who fill out a review on iTunes (or other hosting services). In the 12 years since the creation of the TSA it has become clear that the federal takeover of airport security was a mistake. Cato scholar Chris Edwards writes in an upcoming paper that TSA operations should be privatized and passenger and baggage screening "moved to the control of airports and opened to competitive bidding." In a recent New York Times article, EPIC administrative law counsel Khaliah Barnes highlighted that the TSA deploys Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) squads to perform random sweeps of individuals outside of airports and argues that these practices are problematic because they are devoid of true legal standards like probable cause. Also in response to the growing use of VIPR squads, Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ) introduced the Freedom of Travel Act, which denies the TSA the authority to conduct random searches of surface transportation travelers. Join us for a discussion about restructuring airport screening to improve security, increase efficiency, and reduce civil liberties concerns.
