425: Marketing Strategies to AVOID Repeat Customers with the CMO of National Debt Relief, Jeff Biesman

Marketing Today with Alan Hart

Jeff Biesman grew up in Texas with dreams of being an NFL GM. While those dreams didn't pan out, he learned a lot along the way and decided to heed the advice he received to separate his hobbies from his career and went on to grow his marketing skill set in a very purposeful way. His path started in CPG product marketing with Converse, LA Gear, and Disney, went on to learn digital and performance marketing at Sony, got deep into data with Bank of America, moved onto venture-backed startups ShoeDazzle and Little Black Bag, then pursued B2B at YP and Remoov. In 2021, he was offered a role that was a perfect fit for all the skills he'd gained throughout his career and aligned with his personal values, so he accepted and joined the NDR team as their new CMO. In this role, Jeff is responsible for all direct-to-consumer marketing activities for the company, including PR, partnership development, paid search, social media, and CRM.The state of consumer debt is grim as we are coming out of COVID and battling inflation. NDR acts as an agent on behalf of qualified consumers, putting them on a budget and getting them into an escrow-like program payment that is less than their debt service. As those funds accumulate, NDR then works with creditors to negotiate down the debt owed. Jeff tells us most of their customers are out of debt within 24 to 48 months and see long-term changes in their credit behavior. On the show today, Alan and Jeff talk about why NDR doesn't want repeat businesses, how that impacts their marketing efforts, and what they are doing to stimulate demand in the upper funnel and then capture and migrate those consumers. Many people need help, but unfortunately, most are unaware that there are options like NDR to help them with debt relief, so a large part of the work for Jeff and his team revolves around building awareness, education, performance marketing, and meeting the consumers where they are by layering marketing through paid search, organic search, broadcast TV, and earned media. In this episode, you'll learn about:How does debt relief work? Why does National Debt Relief NOT want repeat businesses, and how does that impact their marketing strategy? How can marketers maximize demand stimulation, capture, and migration when the pool is shrinking?Key Highlights:[02:00] NFL Dreams[04:30] Purposeful steps in the career path[07:50] What drew Jeff to NDR?[09:40] The state of consumer debt[12:00] NDR's role and how it works[15:55] Qualifying to be a customer[18:40] Real human stories[20:00] NDR does NOT want repeat customers.[23:00] What marketing looks like at NDR[25:10] What CMOs need to know about demand capture [28:45] Learning grit, determination, and perseverance [31:15] The importance of patience [33:05] Neuromarketing just makes sense.[34:35] Nothing is set it and forget it.[35:55] We're in the midst of an AI revolution.Looking for more?Visit our website for the full show notes, links to resources mentioned in this episode, and ways to connect with the guest! Flash fiction writer Kayleigh Shoen (or as we like to call her: Princess of Soup) joined us again to talk about all things Punky Brewster related after we watched The Perils of Punky! We started by watching this commercial for a Punky doll. This commercial is super freaky because it starts with a doll and then shows an entire family of Punky clones. WHAT IS HAPPENING???Anyway, they say at the end that Brandon and Glomer are sold separately so all of us were like, “Wait, who’s Glomer?” And that is how we ended up watching this interminable segment of the Punky Brewster cartoon, Glomer’s Story. There’s a part two, but none of us could bear to spend another several minutes on this one. Glomer was voiced by Frank Welker, a prolific voice actor we have seen before in such things as The Chipmunk Adventure, where he voiced the villain’s two yappy dogs. Fun fact: he was also voice of the anaconda in Anaconda. From here we moved on to some commercials for things Kayleigh remembered from her childhood. We started with Get in Shape, Girl. This was a whole toy enterprise that revolved around telling little girls they really needed to workout more… cool. Kayleigh had the Get in Shape, Girl barre.Kayleigh was so into this leotard and tights aesthetic that she wore it under her regular clothes. Ahhh, the 80s!This led us to discuss LA Gear and British Knights shoes and the terribleness of women’s fashion and its lack of pockets. From there we went to a non-gendered exercise toy: Pogoball! We heard this as telling us we could become a Pogoballmancer. Please, someone make us this fan art.We looked into whether adult sized Pogoballs exist and found these terrifying Kangaroo Sky Runner shoes. Then we moved to She Ra. We watched a sequence of these and at first weren’t into the song, but then it took over our brains…From She Ra to Frosta and Catra… who meowsFinally the Crystal CastleKayleigh and Julia both had some of these dolls, but Geoffrey had some awesome He Man action figures. We then talked about the various He Man cartoons and movies. Which… is maybe a little bit of a sneak peek at what you can expect to hear from us next… Meanwhile, Kayleigh introduced us to the concept of the collectible Masters of the Universe sticker book, where you had a book, but in order to see the pictures, you had to buy a tone of sticker packs that were sold in mixed lots like baseball cards. In this edition of Dude, Did You Hear Lite... The dudes are taking a trip down memory lane, destination? Nostalgia.. Grab your Gushers, Pogs, light-up LA Gear, and Hit Clips for a stroll with us!   We’re throwing it back to the ol’ college dorm room days and drinking Natural Lite. It tastes just like your dorm room smelled, awful, just... let's move on.    We’ve got some quickdraws that involve Mel Blanc’s tombstone, Dutch prime ministerial cannibal cookout and Humpty Dumpty: Revelations.   Andy takes us down a nostalgic rabbit hole and answers the question we've all been asking. Why do we love the music from our teenage years? SCIENCE! That's right, the type of science you'd find in Dexter's Lab... if Dexter's Lab had a locked door and music your parents hated playing in it.   Andy and Dave count down their Top 5 movies from the 1990s. This was way harder than we thought it would be. But it'll never be as hard as ambimetic polyalloy.   Dave is back with another Would You Rather. This one makes Andy consider off-ing himself on a date. He only needs one reason why, and his first name is Gilbert.

Lift Heavy Run Long Podcast - Inspire. Be Inspired.

Ty Draney “You don’t have to be crazy but it helps…” was a phrase that Ty heard a lot growing up on a dairy farm in southeast Idaho, near the Wyoming border, and has come in handy as he’s tried to explain the reasoning for how and why he adventures in his free time. A life-long runner who started his career by winning the 100-meter and the mile runs at his middle school track meet in 7th grade- in his sweet LA Gear high-tops, Ty spends his time playing with his family, teaching Spanish, coaching high school track and cross country, training for ultra-marathons and the occasional indoor mile on the track. Ty has been coaching for over 15 years. He has coached more than 40 all-state athletes, 5 state championship teams and has been named regional and state coach of the year 14 times. During this same time he has competed in some of the most grueling mountain races in the world. He has placed top 5 at Hardrock, Wasatch, Bear, and Bighorn 100 races. He has won at least one race at every distance from 50k to 100 miles. He recently finished the first-ever Bear 200 (Double Bear) in under 65 hours. We certainly had a nice time chatting with him, and we think that you will enjoy the listen. You can find Ty at www.tydraneyendurance.com/ Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake
