This show will bless you if you have ever supported CrossExamined.org (and even if you haven't). Just two weeks ago at the Unshaken conference in Nashville, TN, Frank was both shocked and honored to learn that a group of graduates from the CrossExamined Instructor Academy (CIA) began a book project back in 2019 called, 'Faith Examined: New Arguments for Persistent Questions, Essays in Honor of Dr. Frank Turek'. The first copy of that book was given to Frank that night! In this week's podcast episode, Frank interviews the book's editor, Professor and New Testament scholar, Clark Bates, who spearheaded the project. During their conversation, Frank and Clark answer questions like: How did a festschrift in honor of CrossExamined come about? Which apologists have contributed to the book and what are some of the key points they make? Who is Richard Rohr and what is the so-called "Jesus Hermeneutic" that is popular amoung progressive Christians? How do we know that way of interpreting the Bible is wrong? How does Clark approach the reliability of Scripture? How is this book actually an honor for all supporters of CrossExamined? In addition to Clark Bates, contributors to the book include, Alisa Childers, Natasha Crain, Jorge Gil, Sean McDowell, Alex McElroy, Tim Stratton, Eric Chabot, Phil Fernandes, Melissa Dougherty, William Soo Hoo, and Eric Hernandez. A labor of love that was four years in the making, 'Faith Examined' will help you respond to the most current objections to Christianity as it celebrates the contributions of CIA students and the dedicated supporters of CrossExamined. All good stories have beginnings but the greatest story ever told has no end. After much prayer and consideration, we believe Lighten's time has come to an end. While this season has been shorter than we had hoped, we trust God's plan and know that He had a purpose and reason for our time together at Lighten. But don't worry, you can still access all of the YouTube videos and our website content through the Summer of 2023. So, go give it look and a listen! It was created to give hope and light to a dark world, and we want to make it available for as long as we can. Thank you for listening. We know that God's work will continue, His love endures forever, and that He is always inviting us to ask Him Why? The novel The Atmospherians tells the story of a former beauty influencer who teams up with her best friend to start a group aimed at de-programming men who suffer from ‘toxic masculinity.' But the program ends up causing as many problems as it solves. Author Alex McElroy joins us to discuss the novel, which Kirkus calls an “edgy, addictive” debut.

A "canceled" influencer. A lonely man looking for attention. White men adrift in hoards, no memory of the violence or good they've done. Enter The Atmosphere, a new retreat where men can detox from social media and learn to become human again. A cult. This first novel from Alex McElroy is a doozy; capturing the manic craziness of the last decade, the sprint for the next cool thing, the quick turn from darling to pariah, the frenetic way we flit from one catastrophe to another. Join us as host Aubrey Hicks is joined by Caroline Bhalla, Lisa Schweitzer, and Donnajean Ward to argue over McElroy's The Atmospherians.

Alex McElroy (they/them) is a nonbinary writer based in Brooklyn. They received their MFA from Arizona State University and their PhD from the University of Houston. Their writing has been supported by the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, the Tin House Summer Workshop, the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and the Elizabeth George Foundation. The Atmospherians is their first novel. About The Atmospherians: Sasha Marcus was once the epitome of contemporary success: an internet sensation, social media darling, and a creator of a high profile wellness brand for women. But a confrontation with an abusive troll has taken a horrifying turn, and now she's at rock bottom: canceled and doxxed online, fired from her waitress job and fortressed in her apartment while men's rights protestors rage outside. All that once glittered now condemns. Sasha confides in her oldest childhood friend, Dyson—a failed actor with a history of body issues—who hatches a plan for Sasha to restore her reputation by becoming the face of his new business venture, The Atmosphere: a rehabilitation community for men. Based in an abandoned summer camp and billed as a workshop for job training, it is actually a rigorous program designed to rid men of their toxic masculinity and heal them physically, emotionally, and socially. Sasha has little choice but to accept. But what horrors await her as the resident female leader of a crew of washed up, desperate men? And what exactly does Dyson want? Explosive and wickedly funny, this “Fight Club for the millennial generation” (Mat Johnson, author of Pym) peers straight into the dark heart of wellness and woke-ness, self-mythology and self-awareness, by asking what happens when we become addicted to the performance of ourselves.

Pastor Alex McElroy is this weeks guest on Are You Real. Alex says his purpose in life is to help people discover and walk in their God given purpose. He says everyone faces obstacles when it comes to walking in your purpose, and we all have to figure out what we are going to do when those obstacles come. We can turn and walk away, give up, pursue something else, but all of these things are being disobedient to the specific call God has placed on your life if you give up. "Only the creator can tell you what was in His mind when He created you" says McElroy. He also says that he would rather fail at something he loves than succeed at something he hates. This is a practical episode that will inspire you to want to live out your God given purpose!
