It's a popular cliché, "it's about the journey and not the destination", but is this true? What is more important, the getting there or arriving at the endpoint? Fellow yogini Debs Albon and I found ourselves inadvertently answering this question on a trekking trip to Nepal a few weeks ago, and concluded that it is most definitely about the journey! We had booked the trip with the intention of seeing and honouring the mighty Himalayas and chose the Annapurna Sanctuary trek route. We wanted to learn about the Nepalese mountain culture, especially the spiritual context. The views were utterly awe-inspiring, we were not disappointed. But as we moved along the route, we became increasingly aware of a very pushy, forcing energy from people we met. It was all about "Did you get to the top (of Annapurna Base Camp)?" or "Are you on your way up?" or "Are you on your way down"?What about the simply being there, absorbing the majesty of the mountains and paying homage to this sacred area, rather than leading with a "conquering" attitude. People die every year on the mountains because they don't realise they are guests, not masters, of the peaks. But the over-achieving, get-the-selfie ego is powerful and that's how the destination becomes the all-important goal.We have a choice: surrender to the ego or surrender to the universe. So, it's not as simple as surrendering, but rather, to what are you surrendering. This was our learning. And as we travelled on to Kerala, India to immerse ourselves in the culture and spirituality there, we made this our intention. Listen and enjoy our adventure sharing! For information on our India Yoga Retreat offering 10-18 March 2025, click here.

Paul McTaggart is a family man and backpacker out of New Zealand who in recent years reignited his passion for the outdoors. He and I have been exchanging emails back and forth for some time now and I thought it was time we sit down for a real and open-ended conversation about backpacking. This is the very first episode of the By Land Podcast where I bring you the audience member, and in this case Paul, on the show for a conversation for no other reason than to get to know one another. I consider all of you guys a friend so I figure why not start to get to know you! This episode with Paul is incredible and he lays out an amazing bit of framework when it comes to how he plans for his backpacking trips. We talk about his background and younger years, his time spent hiking to Annapurna Base Camp, getting to know backpacking again after years away, and finally, we cover why it's so important to do what's right for you and your situation in the backcountry (aka the ultra-right backpacking reference).I absolutely loved this conversation with Paul and cannot wait to bring more audience members on the show to get to know them, their stories, and glean what I can from their experiences so we can all learn together. Here's a link to Paul's amazing article and planning process. Pokhara is considered the tourism capital of Nepal. There are countless treks that begin or end in Pokhara including the great Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Upper Mustang and Poonhill. Situated on beautiful Phewa Lake this is a much more relaxing experience than the capital of Kathmandu. In this episode I revisit the Peace Pagoda with views of some of the highest mountains on the planet. Listen to the drums and faint chanting from the monks during this episode, a treat when visiting the Peace Pagoda, one of two located in Nepal. I have spent a few days on two occasions in Pokhara and could easily find things to do on a 3rd visit that I've never experienced. It's a different side of Nepal and although there isn't as much cultural sites as you'll find in Kathmandu there are plenty of hills to walk and serene places to visit that will stimulate you in a very different way. What could be more epic than spending 10 days hiking in the Himalayas? I don't know, I don't think I've found it yet. 100 miles + 17,000 vertical feet + 30,000 stairs = the adventure of a lifetime.

Within a few hours from Pokhara valley, there's this place called Australian camp where you can get a taste of Annapurna Base Camp trail and just not hike as much. If you don't have several days for ABC trek, then Australian camp is where you wanna be. A short detail about this place and how to get there.

Had my Visa card retained by an ATM machine this week in Ho Chi Minh City inspiring me to create a what I hope is helpful information to prepare you for your next trip. My card has an app that locks it and I forgot to take the lock off-the result? It was eaten. So fortunately I have back-up plans and this is one of the most important preparations when traveling abroad. Some of these tips might seem obvious especially to those who are frequent travelers but I hope with some of the stories I've shared it reminds you to think there this always the unforseen that catches us off guard. By the way the guy who asked me if he could borrow $20 at Annapurna Base Camp did not have his money stolen, he simply didn't budget enough for his trip. It most large cities in Asia there will be plenty of options where you can either access an ATM machine that accepts international cards or find currency changers to convert your money. In Japan one of the easiest places for foreigners to access funds are the ATM machines that are located in convience stores. Be very carefull when traveling in developing countries like Nepal. There's and other nations banking infrastructure might not be as reliable as what you're used to. So accept the fact that there might be a day when there is no way to get cash and be prepared. Annapurna Base Camp Ultimate Trekking Adventure Video Podcast Part II This was a completely fulfilling experience for me! On a fast trek to the Annapurna Massif and lucking out with clear skies on sunrise day, it was spectacular. Seeing how Dave and Martin enjoyed the trekking experience, the local culture, and getting their first look at the Himalaya was really rewarding for me. This trek for most people is probably best as a 7 day rather than 6. Was fantastic to finish up with some lovely mild weather and sunny skies on the way out. The shortest trek I've ever been on in Nepal but highly stimulating and rewarding. Get exclusive content, live chat, behind the scenes, messaging and more by becoming a patron! Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Nepal-Ultimate Trekking Adventure Part I This was one of the fastest treks I've ever done in Nepal! I've never been so close to 7-8000 meter peaks within 3 days, crazy! It was a wonderful experience. Almost like a mini Annapurna Circuit with varied landscape but not the same varied culture and villages. Still I'd highly recommend this as a first time trek or if you are short on time. Dave and Martin were great trekking partners. It was really rewarding to help a couple of fellow Canadians see this amazing magical place for the first time. I have been blessed to have explored much of this country and it's trails. I can't wait to introduce more people to the beauty of Nepal and it's people. By the way, I mention a man by the name of Shanker in this video. I've been visiting Nepal for the past 8 years, this was my 7th visit. Obviously by the number of visits it's not hard to tell I'm in love with this country. The trekking posibilites amidst the highest mountains on the planet. Unique culture and incredibly fascinating cities and sites. Some of the best wildlife viewing on the planet. I was in Nepal on this visit to lead a small group to Annapurna Base Camp. An interesting and fantastic hike for first time trekkers. This was the first time I was in view of the high Himalaya within 3 days. Usually, of course depending on the trail it can take a minimum of 5 days with proper accilimitization to reach the altitiude that's necessary to view these giant peaks. If you have any questions about trekking in Nepal please feel free to send me an email. I'm leading a small group up to Everest Base Camp September 15th, it would be great if you could join us!Kathmandu does take getting used to for many unfamiliar with South Asia. The traffic, chaos, dirt, Kathmandu is a very dusty city, and the curious who will stop at nothing to sell you something. It's still I believe one of the last few cities in Asia that has still not been transformed into a global village with Starbucks, Gap, Uniqlo, McDonalds, and other chains that are pretty much seen in every medium to large city now in Asia. If you want to escape globalization, mass marketing, the come to Nepal! Hope you enjoy the broadcast. Love to get your feedback! Safe travels and Namaste!
