Our 11th Podcast Town escapade finds us in the real-life town of Marshfield, Massachusetts. Billy interviews the hilarious Peg Davis, our literal resident expert. Peg cleverly explains why the town is called MARSH VEGAS and confirms that Steve Carrel indeed owns the general store that his sister-in-law runs because...well...he's a busy celebrity type guy.  Find out what else Peg reveals and how the BIT Players bring the town to life with their podcast segments and scenic adventures! Enjoy these highlights from the Marshfield Podcast Network: The DIY Show - YOU CAN DO IT: Hosted by newlyweds Molly and Hal Cunningham.  This week's projects include making your own boat and birdhouses. The couple bravely embarks on their homemade dinghy's maiden voyage while trying to avoid the many surfers dotting the shoreline. We are unsure how Hal got trapped in the rafters at Bob's Steakhouse, but we hope he finds his way out!  YOU BETCHA!: Hosted by the semi-nefarious Gamblerino siblings, Gil and Gilda. These two find ways for Marsh Vegans (VAY-Gans, not Vee-Gans) to bet on everything from little league games to Pickle Bowling and surf lessons. Gil even hosts a "speakeasy" game night in the house they inherited from their Granny Sisterino Gamberino. We are convinced that the fix is in at the Senior Center, but you can form your own opinions. (NOTE: Gilda and Molly are high school besties.) Hall of Fame - Marshfield: Bobby and Robby may or may not be broadcasting from the Senior Center's basement. We are unsure where they come from, how they know each other, or why they have a podcast. We DO know that they have an intense bromance going, and Robby's ancestors fought on the "wrong side" of the American Revolution. Their podcast conjures up historical characters, like Benedict Arnold, primarily to shame Robby and guilt him into paying for their Surf Fest entry fees and lunch overlooking a decorative balcony.  Sponsors include Mom's Donuts, Levitate Shops, 2025 St. Patrick's Day Surf Festival, BoB's Steakhouse, the Gamblerino Kids, Kane's Sign Shop, the Marshfield Senior Center, The Pickle Bowling Association of Massachusets, and the National Pickle Bowling Association. If you haven't already, head on over to our MOVIE! MOVIE! Podcast for a two-part homage to Wes Anderson films we call "The Grand Cosmic Hotel." HEAVY Music Interviews
Reaching The Summit With SCOTT KENNEDY From BLEED FROM WITHIN

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 5, 2025 9:35

Interview by Kris PetersTwo decades into any career and you would be forgiven for starting to grow stale or formulaic. Be it an office job, labouring, or even in the music industry, the old saying familiarity breeds contempt holds firm. But try telling that to Scottish metal outfit Bleed From Within who, after 20 years in the music scene, have reached their peak - their Zenith, if you will. The Glasgow firebrands are one of the hardest working acts in metal: playing shows globally with everyone from Megadeth to Slipknot, all while writing and regularly releasing monstrous, exhilarating songs. The upward journey reaches new heights on their seventh album, Zenith, which contains the band's heaviest, catchiest and most intrepid music to date. The band's first two albums, Humanity (2009) and Empire (2010), made Bleed From Within cult figureheads in the deathcore scene, before Uprising (2013) broadened their palate with groove metal adrenaline and melodic death metal prowess. It also marked their major-label debut, catapulting them onto tours with heavy royalty. In 2018, the band returned with the ferocious Era. Then, follow-ups Fracture (2020) and Shrine (2022) proved their greatest triumphs to date, intertwining vocalist Scott Kennedy's snarls with Steven Jones' majestic singing. The millions of streams gathered by such singles as The End of All We Know, Into Nothing and Levitate proved Bleed had become the next big thing. Now, on Zenith – announced ahead of career-affirming tours with Slipknot, Trivium and Bullet for My Valentine – the quintet are primed to leap into superstardom.HEAVY spoke with frontman Scott Kennedy to go deeper into Zenith."It feels like we've been waiting so long to drop this album," he sighed. "So, I'm buzzing for it to finally get out. I think it's the best collection of songs we've ever done and I'm desperate for people to hear it."We ask Kennedy to talk us through what Bleed From Within were going for musically with Zenith."To be honest, with Bleed From Within there's never really any concepts or anything like that," he replied. "It's more just about - for me personally - the songs are always about what I'm going through at that point in my life. I always try to write from the heart and write songs that are really meaningful because I don't want to go on stage and sing a song that doesn't really mean anything to me. I don't just want to go on and sing any old shit to the crowd. With Bleeding From Within it's just always about writing the best collection of metal songs that we possibly can, and I truthfully believe that this is the best collection of metal songs we've ever written."In the full interview, Scott discussed Zenith further, expressing his excitement about what he considers their best work to date. He highlighted the opening track Violent Nature for its heavy and fast nature, and elaborated on the collaborative songwriting process among band members, emphasizing a natural evolution in their music.Scott also mentioned Bleed From Within's experimentation with various musical elements, including strings and guest vocalists, to achieve a distinctive sound. The discussion wrapped up with a mention of upcoming tour plans and festivals following the album's release.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Singer/ guitarist Richard and drummer Pete were introduced to bassist Alan by some HCE fans at St Paul's Arts Centre later that year, and The Anyways' core trio was born. Their goal was to wear black and sound like The Velvet Underground, but luckily they got it slightly wrong and ended up sounding like themselves (while still wearing black). Jennie used to read the newspaper onstage and on one occasion shorted out the keyboard by pouring fizzy pop into it. Trudy, a volunteer mental health worker, brought a big following from the Mill Drop-In Centre, to liven up the usual anoraked indie audience. Sounds reviewed the band's second gig, The Television Personalities offered support slots at the 100 Club in Oxford St, and Notown Records put out the first single, Confession, in 1987. Overcome by the excitement of being played on John Peel (once), Jennie left, and Ali took her place. The Anyways became regular performers at the Camden Falcon, where Bobby Gillespie told them they needed more guitar solos. Two tracks (no solos) were featured on The Jericho Collection in 1988 alongside Notown label-mates Shake Appeal (lots of solos). A video of rousing revolutionary anthem Levitate the Pentagon was shown on satellite TV at 2.00am. The Anyways played in Oxford, London, and Bristol with Talulah Gosh, Razorcuts, The Mission and Ride... and on their own at a Hindu wedding in Hendon (kicking off the evening with that cheery toe-tapper, Love Gone Bad). Band mantra Welcome to Psychedelic Country became even more appropriate when Hamish and Karen joined in 1990. An album (Love Lies) was recorded by Rich Haines at Dungeon Studios, but sadly not released. A swirling cover of George Harrison's If I needed someone graced a charity album called Revolution No. 9. Despite their sterling work on the swirling, Hamish and Karen decided to go more Country than Psychedelic, and left to form Lucky and The Losers in 1991. The final incarnation of The Anyways was completed by guitar maestro Mark, who had previously acted as friend and multi-tasking facilitator to the band for some time - in celebration, chilled Frascati was served to the new line-up onstage at the Zodiac in front of hundreds of delighted Heavenly fans. The Sunshine Down EP came out on Marineville Records in 1993, by which time Richard had received stage-fright counselling from Jonathan Richman and the band had supported Bad Manners at a college ball. Wider (not inspired by Buster Bloodvessel) was featured on the Days Spent Dreaming compilation. By now people wanted to spread their musical wings, so The Anyways' Grand Finale gig was held in 1994 at the Jericho Tavern (the band's spiritual home for many years).

Did the saints really levitate?

These days, when Catholics talk about someone being a saint, this usually has nothing to do with signs or wonders, but with a life of heroic virtue. Further back in church history, however, stories of the saints are often filled with anecdotes about the miraculous. Some stories tell of miraculous healings or rescues; others tell of saints levitating or flying through the air.   “Yes, but those were just legends,” people may say—but the Catholic Church does teach that miracles are real, and it still requires evidence of the miraculous as part of the process of canonization. So what are we to make of these older stories of saints levitating or performing miraculous or supernatural feats? Are the faithful required to believe these things happened? On this episode of the podcast, guest Carlos Eire talks about the motif of levitation in Catholic hagiography. Eire is the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University, and a historian of late medieval and early modern Europe. His most recent book, They Flew: A History of the Impossible from Yale University Press, explores miraculous events such as levitation in the era of transition to modernity. He has also written a highly acclaimed memoir about his experience as a child escapee from the Castro regime in Cuba.  You can learn more about this topic, and read some of Eire's writing, in these links: “Making sense of levitating saints,” by Carlos Eire https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/saints-levitation-bilocation-eire-miracles-history “Historian sets his eyes on levitating saints in book ‘They Flew',” by Patrick J. We call this episode, lovingly, the auntie auntie auntie episode (or the niece niece nibling episode) shouted at the top of our lungs. We scream their names in the key of care, of reclaiming our bodies, lives, and pleasure(s) for ourselves (and our time). In this episode we talk with Anna Almore and Erica or ET, two friends and educators, about their moments of what Anna calls deviant caretaking, the act of choosing pleasure, accountability to one's deepest self over what work as teachers, teacher-educators, and students demands of one's self. Anna and Erica share about lessons learned one night at a strip club and releasing themselves from the disciplining of settler colonialism's projects of school, capitalism, misogynoir, and respectability—led by a long inheritance of aunties who showed them how to do thee things. And as nieces and aunties themselves, they reflect on what they now teach another generation, finding that the lessons and blessings their nieces and relatives give them to be the most urgent ones of all. "The foot is done!" exclaims both Christi and Kelly as the arduous Mackenzie's Broken Foot Saga finally comes to a close. After all, would Melissa let Mackenzie's foot stay broken if it meant not getting to dance on The View? On Season 3's "The View From the Top", the ALDC hits New York for a special appearance on The View that is being guest hosted by Abby, all the while prepping for Masters of Dance Art Invitational the following day. In short the group needs to learn and rehearse five routines in two days time while combating Abby's ever inflating ego (one of those days is for The View so technically make that one day). The Mackenzie vs Asia rivalry hits a breaking point for Melissa when it seems, even if just for a moment, that Abby might choose Asia over her daughter for The View performance. Setting aside the ridiculous notion that Abby would ever let that happen, the possibility does make Melissa feel momentarily that she too could be treated like a Hyland or a Lukasiak. Between Kristie Ray's thank you card, Abby's weird threatening speech to Mackenzie and Melissa's pleading, it's a lot of spilled milk in one episode for a conflict that as our Bitches have repeatedly made clear is very obviously going to end with Mackenzie performing on The View!Meanwhile, Cathy is holding auditions to fill out her Candy Apples team in preparation for the New York Invitational. Her hopes to land a new boy on the team hit a snag when only one boy shows up for the audition!Quotes“I really have dropped the ball on life lately, because I'm just constantly running to get a drink before we record.” (06:16-06:23 | Christi)“It was a little inappropriate for The View but GOD her body was bangin'.” (21:03-21:08 | Christi)“Abby bought these costumes on the streets of New York, and half of them we have on our own little booty tops or whatever that we wore to class. But it's hysterical because I think she charged the production company $300 per costume! They were $10 each, maximum!” (35:04-35:22 | Christi & Kelly)“I will give Abby a compliment. I, to this day, love the fact that our kids know terminology and there's a million people who do not, who are professional dancers!” (1:03:48-1:03:56 | Christi)LinksSubscribe to us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC50aSBAYXH_9yU2YkKyXZ0w Subscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/backtothebarreThank you to Ashley Jana for allowing us to use Electricity!! Levitate, a well-known brand in New England, hosts the annual Levitate Music and Arts Festival and the fall-themed Flannel Jam, both of which celebrate creativity and the spirit of community.Britt Ryan's career in the festival world has been nothing short of impressive. With over a decade of experience in live events, including a stint as an Associate Producer at the renowned Newport Festivals, she brings a wealth of expertise and insights to the table. Throughout the interview, she shared her journey and offered valuable advice for young professionals in the industry and independent artists looking to gain visibility.A Festival Rooted in CommunityLevitate's roots go back two decades when it began as a surf and skateboard shop, inspired and guided by its founder, Bob Pollard. After his untimely passing, Dan Hassett, the current owner, took over the shop, nurturing its growth. Levitate expanded beyond retail, hosting events like beach cleanups, surf movie nights, and creative camps for kids. The turning point came when Levitate celebrated its 10th anniversary and decided to throw a birthday party that would become the first Levitate Music and Arts Festival. What started with 1500 attendees has now grown into a three-day festival with 20,000 patrons per day, featuring multiple stages, a vibrant arts scene, and a dedicated community of music lovers.Levitate's commitment to community doesn't stop with festivals. They've created Levitate Backyard, a seasonal music venue that has become a hub for local talent and music enthusiasts. Her day-to-day tasks involve coordinating various departments, ensuring they have the necessary resources, and overseeing everything from site operations and production to sponsorship and artist relations.Britt finds the most satisfaction in the logistical puzzle that is a festival. She enjoys the challenge of bringing together numerous moving parts and making sure everything fits seamlessly. It's about looking at the bigger picture and ensuring all elements come together harmoniously to create an unforgettable experience for attendees.Advice for Aspiring Festival ProfessionalsFor young professionals looking to make a career in festivals and events, Britt offers valuable insights. She emphasizes the importance of getting hands-on experience in various festival departments. Whether it's working in the box office, site operations, or artist relations, gaining exposure to different aspects of event management is invaluable. For both music industry professionals and artists, networking is a crucial aspect of breaking into the industry. Britt advises connecting with professionals in the field, seeking mentorship, and never hesitating to ask questions. Drawing inspiration from the jam band model, Britt emphasizes that creating a loyal and engaged fan base can have a lasting impact.
