On their Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian Nittany Lions insider Joel Haas react to a busy week of personnel moves following the College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl. Will coach James Franklin miss Tom Allen as DC after his move to join Dabo Swinney at Clemson? Or are Anthony Poindexter, Dan Connor, Al Golden and D'Anton Lynn attractive possible alternatives? What about Harrison "Trey" Wallace and Omari Evans at receiver? Will their transfer portal departures hurt? Or could they be addition by subtraction after their no-show efforts in Miami? And can transfers Kyron Hudson from USC and Devonte Ross from Troy step into those roles capably? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders NFL draft decisions. Does Penn State have the depth to stay elite despite the loss of names like Tyler Warren, Abdul Carter and Kobe King? To what degree can names like Dani Dennis-Sutton and Luke Reynolds step up behind them? And how encouraging are the returns of Dennis-Sutton, Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen and Zane Durant for Penn State's NIL program?

The Lions lost 38-25 to Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta in another big game whiff for head coach James Franklin and his squad. On today's BWI Live Show, we'll discuss what went into the meltdown on both sides of the ball. Check out the show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, or on the site. If you haven't yet, subscribe to our YouTube Channel so you don't miss any breaking news or commentary on the Nittany Lions. Penn State offense The Penn State offense improved upon it's other performances against top-15 teams in postseason play, putting up 17 points in the first half and keeping pace with Ole Miss' wide open attack. But the team's adjustments out of halftime proved to be catastrophic. The team managed only nine plays on three three-and-outs during the third quarter, while Ole Miss poured on 11 points. By the time the team recovered in the fourth quarter, the game was all but over. Quarterback Drew Allar threw for 295 yards in the loss, but was once again posted a sub-50% completion percentage in the game. We'll discuss his role in the team's offensive struggles and then discuss the other factors that led to the team's inability to put meaningful pressure back on the Ole Miss offense. Defense puts on its worst performance of the season While the offense struggled for meaningful moments late in a shootout, the Penn State defense was the real problem for the Nittany Lions on saturday. They gave up 544 yards of offense in the game, including 258 yards passing in the first half. We'll discuss what no-win situation the opt-outs and injuries put interim defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter in. We'll also discuss the future of the defense and how Penn State can rebuild its defense next season under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen. As it does with a win, the loss puts a certain spin on the upcoming season. Should Penn State fans be less optimistic about the future after the team's performance in Atlanta? Penn State's vaunted defense allowed over 500 yards without key starters and injuries that cropped up throughout the game. Join the show live on YouTube immediately following the game. Penn State and Ole Miss trade blows early The first half went to the Nittany Lions, who came out of the gates hot. Despite not having Olu Fashanu, Kalen King or Johnny Dixon, the team got things going on both sides of the ball. Penn State rushed for 85 yards on ten carries. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen took that momentum from the first half to average a twin 6.6 yards per carry at halftime. Meanwhile the Penn State defense under co-defensive coordinators Robb Smith and Anthony Poindexter got to Quinshon Judkins early. The run-heavy Ole Miss offense gained one yard rushing thanks to the typically aggressive Penn State front seven. That led to several third-and-longs where the Penn State pass rush got to quarterback Jaxson Dart. Second quarter saved by big play But things changed in the second quarter. Ole Miss veered away from its run approach to attack Penn State's young corner. Zion Tracy and Cam Miller couldn't lock down Tre Harris, who put up 63 yards in the first half. His teammates outdid him, tight end Cade Prieskorn, who racked up 96 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Dayton Wade threw in 79 yards as well. Dart threw for 258 yards in the first half. Meanwhile, Allar and the offense failed to find a second gear. The passing game struggled once again but was aided by a trick play from backup quarterback Beau Pribula, resulting in a 48-yard touchdown to Nick Singleton. Third quarter implsion Penn State's offense didn't do much to help itself at halftime. They botched a two-minute drive, giving the ball back to Ole Miss iwth a chance to score before the half, then went three-and-out on the second half's opening drive. The third quarter was the turning point in the game for the two teams. Penn State's offense remained in neutral coming out of halftime. The team gained 14 yards to Ole Miss' 141. The Nittany Lions went three-and-out on each drive of the third quarter, showing little ability to threaten a maligned Ole Miss defense. Meanwhile, a critical injury to Abdul Carter opened the gates for an already churning Ole Miss offense. Carter was rolled up on at the end of the first half and tried to play through in the third quarter. However, he struggled to get off blocks or play with explosives, helping to allow 57 rushing yards in the third frame. We'll be taking your questions and thoughts about the loss on the show for sixty minutes after the final whistle. Don't miss the final BWI Live Postgame Show of the season! Penn Stated: Talking Penn State Football with Donnie Collins

There's a lot going on at Penn State and around college football, weeks after the regular season ended. The transfer portal remains open.Bowl prep is ongoing.National Letter of Intent Signing Day is a week away, and coaches everywhere are trying to lock down their final verbal commitments on the recruiting trail.Plus, in Happy Valley, there's the matter of finding someone to run the defense after Manny Diaz took the head coaching position at Duke last week.On this week's episode of the Penn Stated podcast, hosts Donnie Collins (The Scranton Times-Tribune) and Sam Fremin (Citizens Voice) try to sort out as much of the goings-on as possible, focusing on the areas Penn State needs to address as the Peach Bowl approaches on Dec. 30.It starts with finding a successor for Diaz: Does his familiarity with the roster and experience working alongside Diaz make current safeties coach Anthony Poindexter a favorite? Or, should head coach James Franklin look to the outside, for a bigger name with more recent results as a defensive coordinator? But, Penn State also needs to get busy in the transfer portal, where they're hoping to host a slew of players on campus this weekend. Obviously, they need receivers, but who would be the best fits? And, what kind of message does it send to high school recruits if players who spurned Penn State in the past are asked to return?Donnie and Sam also chat about which players on the current roster who are on the borderline between the NFL and returning would best be served coming back -- and which ones Penn State needs back the most.To contact Donnie, drop an email at dcollins@scrantontimes.com, or send him a message on Twitter @PennStateTT.Listen and subscribe on Apple podcastsListen and subscribe on Google podcastsListen and subscribe on Spotify

When you Use Promo Code BWI to get 10% off your order! The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is looking for a new defensive coordinator heading into the 2024 offseason. With the early national signing day looming, plus the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30, the team needs to act quickly. But does Penn State head coach James Franklin already have the next coordinator on his staff? A popular option among fans is to promote from within and have safety coach Anthony Poindexter assume the role of replicating Manny Diaz's defense. On today's show, we debate the merits of that against hiring a new coordinator with his own system. Franklin opens the door to PSU internal hire The idea of Penn Stat hiring from within isn't a bad one. Poindexter is an excellent coach with experience who could be a candidate for the job. Franklin alluded to as much during his Monday press conference when asked about the job. “(We're) trying to also balance that while also interviewing and trying to decide what we're going to do moving forward with our defensive coordinator position, whether it's an internal candidate or an external candidate. And we're working through that right now,” Franklin said. “But we'll handle it like we have on offense the last few games of the season. And I'll get into more specifics as we get together again.” The issue is the sentiment that Poindexter should “run Manny's defense”. We'll discuss how that could go wrong and the challenges of any coordinator trying to replicate someone else's scheme. Fans questions want to know more about team building Penn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki will take over next year with the same question that the team had this year. How do you use two quarterbacks? On today's show we'll discuss how to best use backup quarterback Beau Pribula in any offense that features Drew Allar. We'll also take questions from fans about the tight ends behind Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren. Can Penn State keep the same level of productivity at the position? Lastly, the team needs to make the right moves in the transfer portal this offseason. What are the positions that the team needs to address? We'll discuss the addition of Divison II tackle Alan Herron and preview what the team still needs from the portal before the window closes in January. Penn State football is working furiously to secure the Class of 2023 less than a week before signing day. One of the critical players in the class is four-star safety Dakaari Nelson. The 6-3, 195-pound safety prospect sat down with the BWI Daily Edition on Friday to discuss his commitment to Penn State. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss player interviews: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK As fans who closely follow recruiting know, Nelson's status with the program felt rocky over the last several months. That's because the Alabama native agreed to visit other schools, including Ole Miss, during the season despite committing to Penn State in June. During his 22-minute conversation with T-Frank, he discussed why he wanted to take those visits and under what conditions he agreed to see those schools. Next, they discuss Nelson's reasons for committing to Penn State. It's a 14-hour drive to State College from Selma, which Nelson famously took to see the team play Rutgers in November of 2021. What drew him so far north? Next, Nelson discussed why he initially chose Penn State and what coaches influenced him the most. Finally, Nelson discusses his relationship with Anthony Poindexter and how Penn State plans to use him in the defense once he joins the program.  From there, T-Frank helps fans get to know Nelson's game better by discussing his growth as a football player. Then, blue White Illustrated's film analyst discusses Nelson's time playing cornerback, and his transition to safety this season. Interestingly, defense wasn't even his first interest. Nelson describes his journey, starting at quarterback, through a COVID growth spurt, to where he is now. After discussing his game, T-Frank gets to know Nelson better with questions about his family, life, and hobbies outside of football.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We're one week away from the start of the 2022 season for Penn State football. To get fans ready for the upcoming festivities, the BWI Daily Edition is taking questions from viewers of the show. If you'd like to get your question on the show, the best way is to sign up for Blue White Illustrated and access the Lions Den Message Board. Sign up for just one dollar and get 12 months of insider access.   Today, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel answer questions ranging from Penn State's sack total in 2022 to whether or not transfer Chop Robinson will play linebacker.  They start the show with a question from a message board member about the plan of attack for the Penn State defense. After years of sack totals that led the nation, Penn State's defense took a step backward last year in that category. Will new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and starting defensive end Adisa Isaac surpass the numbers from last season? And can anyone replace what Arnold Ebikeite did for the team? First, T-Frank and Pickel set the scene with what they know about Diaz's approach. Next, they give a prediction of how Penn State would exceed those numbers in 2022. Also, T-Frank points out the need for a player, or players, to set up and provide a replicable presence of what Ebiketie did last year for Penn State.  Next, they discuss Penn State's decision to play Olu Fashanu and Landon Tengwall beside one another on the left side of the line. Is there a reason for that? T-Frank gets into the history of offensive line skills and where coaches have traditionally played players with specific abilities. Next, he explains how all of that has changed over time and what skills are needed in a modern football game.  From there, they dive into a discussion about Purdue and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. Does he have additional insight into the Boilermakers after spending several seasons there as a coach? T-Frank and Pickel debate the merits of that thought.  The duo covers other viewers' topics, such as where Maryland transfer Chop Robinson will play this fall. T-Frank explains the difference between Penn State's linebacker room this year and in previous years. The commenter also suggests that Alabama has 250-pound linebackers and cites that as a source of weakness for Penn State. T-Frank tries to dispel this myth by explaining the difference between an edge rusher and an off-ball linebacker.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, Penn State football is in Tampa, Florida, preparing to face Arkansas in the Outback Bowl. Blue White Illustrated reporter Greg Pickel is down in the Sunshine State and joins host Thomas Frank Carr to give an update on the team, what he's seen at practice, as well as his takeaways from media availability.  They start with the news that broke Wednesday afternoon that Penn State left tackle Rasheed Walker would not play in the game, and backup Olu Fashanu will take his spot on the left side. Pickel wasn't surprised by the news but by what head coach James Franklin said during his press conference. So, he addresses that before giving his thoughts on what that move means for the team.  Next, they get into the other piece of news coming out of Franklin's media availability. First, they discuss what that information means for the Penn State defense and its effects. Then, T-Frank gets Pickel's thoughts on how bowl games should affect the redshirt status of players who may be forced into action by starters opting out for the NFL Draft.  From there, they examine a crucial cog in Penn State's efforts on defense; linebacker Jesse Luketa. After hearing what interim defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter has to say about how they might use Luketa on Saturday, T-Frank and Pickel discuss what is best for the team in that regard. Finally, T-Frank brings up one troubling stat regarding Luketa's usage and how it could put Penn State in a bind if he plays too many snaps at linebacker.  From there, they take a look at the young players that might see action during the contest and what Pickel is curious to learn about that group on Saturday.  Finally, they wrap up by going over the news that starting corner Joey Porter Jr. is returning to Penn State next season. They hear from Porter Jr. what happened at the end of the year, and then T-Frank and Pickel discuss his potential next season.  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State continues to travel the country for week two of the December contract period. After losing Brent Pry to Virginia Tech, recruiting assistant Kenny Sanders has replaced him out on the recruiting trail. James Franklin may be forced to add another assistant for the final few days, as talk surrounding Anthony Poindexter becoming the next head coach at Virginia continue to heat up. How might all these changes impact the Class of 2022? Blue White Illustrated's Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder discuss that in today's recruiting podcast. UNLV linebacker Jacoby Windmon is also a popular topic among Penn State fans currently. On Monday, the Nittany Lions extended a scholarship offer to the second-team All-Mountain West linebacker. Windmon took a visit to Michigan State this past weekend, and now the Nittany Lions are trying to get him on campus before the dad period begins. The pair also discuss a handful of new scholarship offers that have gone out in recent days. 2023 defensive lineman Joseph Mupoyi, from Archbishop Carroll, and wide receiver Lamar Patterson, from St. Frances, are both discussed. Mupoyi has been scouted by the Penn State staff all season. After his first year playing football, schools all across the country are now showing interest. Finally, they wrap up the show discussing the upcoming PIAA state championship games in Hershey. Penn State has extended scholarship offers to over a dozen prospects playing in the six games. Ryan hits on the games he's planning to see, as well as which players stand out. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-... For the best experience visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChxdUL75n6RsZUX17SXbcew More uncertainty clouds the future of the Penn State football defensive staff. Are the Nittany Lions done losing coaches? Head coach James Franklin and his staff are currently out on the road putting the finishing touches on the recruiting class of 2022. Yet safeties coach Anthony Poindexter emerged this week as one of, if not the leading candidate to be the next head coach at Virginia this weekend. So how can Penn State weather that storm on the recruiting trail? If Poindexter gets the job out of Happy Valley, will any other defensive coaches follow Pry or Poindexter?  While those are all questions to be answered over time, one thing is for sure, Penn State's defense will be in flux when they face Arkansas in the Outback Bowl on New Years Day. That is what host Thomas Frank Carr focuses on during the BWI Daily edition to start the second week of the offseason.  Arkansas presents one of the more unique challenges that Penn State has seen this year from an offensive perspective, and T-Frank touches on some of the key names to know early in the process. He gives some stats and figures to know about the Arkansas offense and raises some concerns about Penn State's ability to prepare if they lose too many more coaches.  After that brief overview of the upcoming bowl game, the show focuses on the 2022 recruiting class and five-start quarterback Drew Allar. T-Frank's film room focuses on the senior from Medina, OH, and his development over time. T-Frank breaks down Allar's footwork and how it has changed since his emergence on the scene in 2020 as a four-star prospect.  He shows that progression then focuses on some of the other details that show up in Allar's film and his development in those areas. Those include:  Pre Snap diagnostics  Pocket movement and throwing off-platform Arm Talent and strength  Deep accuracy  Throwing under pressure T-Franks also weighs in on the biggest question that Penn State fans want to know; Could Allar start in 2022? News and rumors are already swirling around the Penn State football program in their first week this offseason. The Penn State coaching staff is out on the road recruiting for the next week and a half in a critical junction of the Class of 2022. On top of that, head coach James Franklin is also trying to navigate the competitive world of assistant coach hiring. After defensive coordinator Brent Pry left earlier this week to assume the head coach role at Virginia Tech, Franklin has presumably been hard at work finding his replacement.  Bauer emphasizes that there is no firm news coming from the Lasch building on the state of the coaching search. Still, he joins the show to share what he's found when researching possible candidates to replace Pry. The complete list is also available in his article from earlier in the week, but he and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the most intriguing names he found. They also discuss the machinations behind the scenes to secure a new coordinator.  One name of particular interest to T-Frank is co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. Poindexter is a potential in-house candidate to replace Pry and a possible replacement for Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall. Poindexter was recently inducted into the school's hall of fame and is a legend in the region. Can Franklin keep him in Happy Valley? Or will Penn State be searching for two defensive assistants this winter? T-Frank and Bauer discuss all of the factors that play into that decision and just how highly Franklin views poindexter.  After finishing up with possible moves around the staff, Bauer updates Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford's future with the program. Is the door open for him to return? Or is Penn State moving on? First, he reveals that information, and then he and T-Frank discuss the merits of that decision by the team.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

News broke early Tuesday that Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry would be named the next head coach at Virginia Tech. Reporter for Blue White Illustrated, Greg Pickel, and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the news and how it affects Penn State heading into the 2021-2022 offseason. Before getting to the Penn State side of things, Pickel briefly discusses his time covering Pry as a defensive coordinator and gives his opinion on the job he did at Penn State. Next, they discuss the situation from Pry's perspective and how Pickel saw this situation break down for Pry this offseason with so many coaching vacancies open up in the mid-Atlantic region. He also gives his thoughts on how Pry will fit in at Virginia Tech and whether Pry is a good hire for the Hokies. Also, Pickel recalls a moment speaking with Pry back in 2016 that is relevant to the discussion now. Next, Pickel discusses how Pry kept his viewed coaching opportunities during his time at Penn State. Finally, he shares the timeline of how all of this news came together. Next, they discuss how Pry's leaving will affect the recruiting process for Penn State, with only a few weeks left until the early signing period. Pickel says that while Pry is an essential piece of the puzzle at Penn State, he doesn't think it will affect Penn State's recruiting in a significant way. First, he tells you why and how Penn State sets up its recruiting process. T-Frank then asks specific players on the defensive side of the ball who might be more affected by this news. Four-star linebacker Abdul Carter is committed to the program, while fellow four-star linebacker Jaishawn Barham is considering doing the same. Are either of them at risk considering that Pry is also the linebackers coach? Pickel weighs in. However, Pry isn't the only coach on the move for Penn State this offseason. Could he pluck one of his former assistants to join him in Blacksburg? T-Frank and Greg discuss which coaches make the most sense for Pry and might leave for a higher position on the defense. They also consider which coaches Penn State would fight to keep on the staff if there was a conflict. This conversation then spins off into assessing some of the other assistants on defense and how well they've performed during their time at Penn State. With that in mind, they discuss which coaches could fill the role internally for head coach James Franklin, with the two apparent candidates being cornerbacks coach Terry Smith and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. They weigh the merits of each coach taking a more prominent role on the defensive side of the ball. If no one gets promoted, how does that affect the staff? How would an outside hire shake up the staff anyway? T-Frank and Pickel discuss. They look at the coaching contact period going on right now and how Pry's departure affects how Penn State handles their in-home visits with recruits in the Class of 2022. How will they cover his territory, and how will they deal with the news talking to players in person? Finally, they finish the show considering players who might leave the program to follow Pry to Virginia Tech via the transfer portal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Penn State has been successful program under James Franklin and defensive coordinator Brent Pry, but one area that they have lacked consistency is turnovers on defense. Today, host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look at how instincts play into this dynamic and what Penn State can do to fix that...if they can. He talks to several key players in the secondary including Jaquan Brisker to Tariq Castro-Fields, as well as coaches Terry Smith and Anthony Poindexter to see where they think instincts are and where they come from. Finally he takes what he learns and comes up with an answer as to what instincts are and how you can make plays on defense. Or at least, as much as we can understand something so intangible.
