Top Pennsylvania lawmakers say school districts may need to demonstrate improvements before additional state dollars are guaranteed. This year’s budget proposal includes a third installment of adequacy funds for historically underfunded schools. A bill in the state House of Representative would allow the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association to establish separate playoff systems and championships for boundary and non-boundary schools. A federal judge has ordered the University of Pennsylvania to comply with a government subpoena seeking information on Jewish students and faculty. The Department of Homeland Security is pausing the purchase of new warehouses intended to house immigrants as it scrutinizes all contracts signed under former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. That includes proposed warehouse conversion projects in Berks and Schuylkill Counties. And a deep dive: Several medical offices in the State College area are now charging “facility fees.” These fees often aren’t communicated ahead of time… and can cost hundreds of dollars. In this second story of a three-part series, Sydney Roach from our friends at WPSU has the arguments for and against facility fees. In uncertain times, our community counts on facts, not noise. Some athletes ease into the spotlight. Carter Smith ran straight toward it... faster than almost anyone his age.The Mifflin County senior from Lewistown, Pennsylvania is still early in his distance-running journey, just three years into the sport, yet his natural ability has forced the running world to pay attention. An 800-mile talent with rare range and feel, Smith pairs raw speed with an instinct for racing that can't be taught. He didn't grow up doing this. He learned fast. And then he kept getting better. The numbers come quick. 1:48.66 for 800 meters. 4:01.2 for the mile. A 15:04 5K in cross country. Five PIAA state titles. A NBNO championship in the mile. Last spring, he delivered the defining performance of his career so far, doubling back to win both the 1600m and 800m at the PIAA state meet. Two races. No margin. Just execution. But talent doesn't protect you from doubt. This fall marked only his second season of cross country, raced mostly on slower courses and capped by a fourth-place finish at states after winning the year before. A small change in placement. A sharp internal check. Proof that progress isn't linear, even when the ceiling is high.In this episode of The Sunday Shakeout, Carter talks about the power of the mind, how belief shapes performance, and what it means to stay grounded when expectations rise faster than experience. We unpack late development, racing with intent, and the tension between trusting talent and earning it daily as he gears up for a sub-four attempt at the New Balance Grand Prix. This conversation isn't about hype. It's about learning how to handle talent without letting it define you. Please enjoy this episode of The Sunday Shakeout with Carter Smith. Consider leaving a follow and a five-star review. The 2025 high school football season ended last weekend with the PIAA championships in Mechanicsburg. Our insiders, high school sports coordinator Keith Barnes and veteran writer Mike White, break down what happened in the state final games involving PIAA champions Clairton and Avonworth, as well as Central Catholic's loss to La Salle College High School. In their second segment, they discuss who they would invite to a proverbial WPIAL Heisman dinner, plus Coach of the Year candidates, top plays from the season and games to remember, all on the Varsity Xtra podcast, sponsored by Dave & Busters. The high school football season will come to an end this weekend when Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg plays host to six PIAA championship games. Our Post-Gazette insiders, veteran scribe Mike White and high school sports coordinator Keith Barnes, break it down. In the first segment the two look at games involving non-WPIAL teams in Classes 2A, 4A and 5A. After a quick break, they examine the title matchups in Class 1A between Clairton and Bishop Guilfoyle, the Class 3A 2024 rematch between Avonworth and Northwestern Lehigh and finally the Class 6A clash, a rematch of the 2025 season opener won by La Salle College High School, 23-6, over Central Catholic at the Wolvarena. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Eric and Dan are once again joined by Bruce Badgley, recapping the PIAA quarterfinal round and the remaining District 3 championship games. They break down Harrisburg's dominant defensive performance in their 6A win over Central York, Bishop McDevitt's 5A victory against Solanco which marked Coach Jeff Weachter's 300th career win, and Twin Valley's historic first district title in 4A. The discussion also covers Trinity's improbable comeback, Kevin Brown's commitment to West Virginia, and the resignation of Cedar Cliff coach Colin Gillen.
Peters Township's comeback against Pine-Richland in the WPIAL 5A championship was one for the ages. On their weekly podcast, Post-Gazette high school insiders Keith Barnes and Mike White react to that game and the rest WPIAL championships at Acrisure Stadium. How did Cole Neupaver, Nolan DiLucia and Co. storm back? How impressive were Will Martin's three touchdowns for Seton LaSalle in the Class 2A final? Why were coach Duke Johncour, RB Luca Neal and Avonworth able to repeat in Class 3A? And how did Clairton coach Wayne Wade and star Deon Lovelace-Pompey help the Bears pull away in Class 1A? Our duo tackles those questions; offers predictions for the PIAA semifinals this week and previews of the rankings for basketball season, which begins Friday. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
It's the most wonderful time of year. No, it's not Christmas. It's the WPIAL football championships, with finals in Class 4A and Class 6A slated for Saturday at Pine-Richland. After analyzing the ramifications of the PIAA biennial realignment on football conferences, our Post-Gazette High School insiders Keith Barnes and Mike White delve into the matchups as McKeesport and running back Kemon Spell, who have been to the finals each of the last two years, hope to avenge a 2023 finals loss to the Quips, who have been bolstered by the return of quarterback Marques Council. In the Class 6A final, familiar foes meet as defending champion Central Catholic once again squares off with North Allegheny. They then look deeply at the Friday slate of eight semifinal matchups in Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 5A, featuring rematches from the regular season from Western Hills Conference foes Avonworth-North Catholic and Peters Township-Upper St. Clair from the Allegheny Six. As a bonus, they look at the PIAA Class 1A game featuring Westinghouse and District 5 champion Meyersdale Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
