I'm really starting to feel like this is one of the more underappreciated black cinema franchises out here... The original was a good feel and the second got a bit more wild, but this is the one that we'll look back on and realize just how much of an impact it has today. Ice Cube is a man that knows quality work when he sees it. Enjoy, folks.
Lamorne Morris is an American actor, comedian and television personality. He is best known for his role as Winston Bishop in the Fox sitcom New Girl (2011-2018). He has also had supporting roles in the films Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016), Game Night (2018), Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), and Yesterday (2019). Lamorne joins Steven to talk about his family and upbringing, how he has become a household name around the world, and the shared stories of their recent experience together in the Gumball Rally. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you are raised by go-getters, that sense of purpose and thirst for something better, impacts your entire life from then onwards. Connecting with people should always be our first priority in life. Life is far better and more enriched by the presence and gifts of others. Opportunities come and go, but if you don't take them when they arrive, you might regret it for the rest of your life. Always try to be open minded. Dreams are the real fuel to success. Even the most successful people were at the bottom once. The ones who reach the top are the ones who use their dreams as rocket fuel to keep pushing higher. BEST MOMENTS 'The most important thing is connecting with new people' 'If I hadn't done this, I would've regretted it for the rest of my life' 'You have to go through the rough patch' "you have to dare to shoot your shot' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study Lamorne Morris Twitter - www.twitter.com/LamorneMorris ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should have multiple focuses to be a well-rounded individual. Success shouldn't be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made a success in life and also made huge cock-ups I feel I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit. My 'Study' has taken resources from reading and education plus being around, my perception, of successful people and I, know a lot of successful people from all walks of life. My 'Study' coming from my experiences in business, investing, sales (my core background), training, boxing and education has enabled me to become well rounded and successful and I will help you in these key areas too. While in college, Tracy Oliver was interested in the performing arts, but she eventually realized she was often the “sassy, funny sidekick and not the lead.” This realization - and her mother - actually inspired her to start writing rather than wait for someone to cast her. Oliver was tired of being the “cigarette-smoking friend” or in the “slavery movie,” so she started to write about herself. “That, weirdly, was revolutionary to write about the normalcy of black life.” As a writer, she's now known for Survivor's Remorse, Barbershop: The Next Cut, Girls Trip, Little, First Wives Club, and the upcoming series Harlem. In this interview, Oliver talks about black normalcy in film and television, what led her to becoming a writer-producer, how to craft IP for black stories, and the most important trait to stay employed as a writer. Utkarsh Ambudkar (The Mindy Project, Pitch Perfect, Barbershop: The Next Cut, Free Guy, Marry Me) is a professional actor, writer, rapper and musician. A South-Asian American of Indian descent, born in Maryland to immigrant parents who are both progressive scientists as well as quiet practitioners of prayer, Utkarsh possesses a unique perspective on spirituality and culture. He is also charming, funny, kind, quick-witted and thoughtful, which makes for a delightful and insightful episode between these two old friends (who met on the set of the film Rocket Science 15 years ago).Utkarsh has done a great deal of positive self-reflection, and he speaks reverently about the spiritual growth and awareness he has achieved after giving up drugs and alcohol and articulating and accepting a loving God-force into his day-to-day. He speaks about the different religious worlds both in India and the U.S. that have been available to him throughout his upbringing, and yet somehow were never imposed upon him. He speaks about his love and proclivity for music and rhyme, what that meant to him growing up, and what it means to him today. And he also makes Nick laugh many times throughout the episode, the loudest of which probably came after he revealed to Nick what his quiet, loving God-voice said to him after his cable went down. It's a beautiful episode, and I hope you enjoy it. Utkarsh is a successful and prolific independent musician, with two new albums set to drop in the next six months or so. Find him at the following link, or wherever you get your music: Utkarsh on SpotifyAlso, Utkarsh mentions how his grandmother is a practitioner of Jainism. On this 16th episode of Movies Never Say Die we talk about Barbershop: The Next Cut. Here at MNSD we wanted to discuss a movie that touches on some of the same social injustice and black lives matter issues that have been sweeping over the US in recent months. To our surprise, and perhaps ignorance, we found it a little hard to find one that still fit our sequels and reboots theme. But we found it in this most recent entry of the Ice Cube lead franchise. In the Pipeline we talk about a few rumors, teases, and trailers in the world of reboots, sequels and remakes, while things in Hollywood are still in an ongoing stoppage.Take care of each other, social distance, stay at home if you can, wear a mask if you do have to go out, and.......Wash Your Hands! As always, thanks for giving us a shot. You can put EVE on an arena stage, a movie set, a sitcom soundstage, a talk show panel, even in a rap battle with a bunch of dudes. This fearless female will waste no time showing you she can’t be contained. From the Philly streets to Dr. Dre’s “castle” in Calabasas to the world’s stage, this guest shares with us how you can be a truth teller and a storyteller without sacrificing your authenticity or your instincts. In 2016 she reunited with Stefani for the “This Is What the Truth Feels Like” tour and hosted the “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens.” Eve has released four multi-million selling albums and 32 singles, and throughout her career she has collaborated with many prominent artists, including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Jill Scott, DMX, Swizz Beatz, Dr. Dre, Juicy J, The Roots and Missy Elliott. For this week's podcast, we got the special opportunity to interview singer-rapper Lizzo. The Houston native lives in Minneapolis and had the chance to collaborate with Prince on his last album. Lizzo's major label debut is the EP “Coconut Oil” which includes the track “Good As Hell” that was on The Barbershop: The Next Cut soundtrack earlier this year. Music aside, what really makes Lizzo's story interesting is that she waves the flag for feminism and promotes positive body imaging. I got the chance to talk to her about Prince's death, her unique music style, her new EP, and the importance of positive music. Willie Waffle reviews "The Jungle Book", "Criminal" and "Barbershop: The Next Cut".
A much-belated comedy sequel, coming about twelve years after the previous Barbershop entry (not counting the female-centric spin-off, Beauty Shop), Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Barbershop: The Next Cut picks up mostly where we left off, even if it's a decade later, with a barbershop/salon run by Calvin Palmer Jr. in Chicago's South Side, serving the community with the best in style and the choicest of conversation about a variety of topics, both political and banal. No longer worried about the gentrification occurring in the prior chapter, the folks at the now-unisex shop still have major issues in Chicago to contend with, most notably in the escalating gun and gang violence running rampant in their neighborhood that has given the city the unenviable nickname of "Chi-Raq".
