Luke and Nathan return to 2016 to revisit the live-action sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), which stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Stephen Amell, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, and Alan Ritchson. The turtles face a new challenge when Shredder (Brian Tee) escapes from custody and joins forces with Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), a mad scientist who plans to use a serum to take over the world. Finally, we've come to the totally nonsensical "giant anthropomorphic turtles with googly eyes that make you uncomfortable" of time travel: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III." The lesser of the three original "Turtles" films, "TMNT III" includes time travel back to 1600s Japan for some reason. This is accomplished by a weird scepter, the rules of which make zero sense. Somewhat in honor of the release of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows", the second movie in the new rebooted Turtles continuity that Phil rather likes, we're digging into 1993's ignoble end to the live-action "Turtles" movies. It's technically a time travel movie! By the way, here's the ZZ Top song from the beginning of the movie that Nick incorrectly disparaged as being a knock-off of "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors. It makes sense in context! We'll be hitting up the Terry Gilliam movie "12 Monkeys" on our next episode, combined with "La Jetee," the French short that inspired the film. You can check it out on Vimeo or (but you might want to find it in French with subtitles instead). In this episode: Hey, remember "Out of Our Shells"? It's time to dip back into the sewers for a return to the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Seven years have passed since the latest franchise revival fizzled out with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is now playing. So Rob steps up to the mic to address his thoughts on the new animated movie. Does the film justify its existence as the seventh theatrically released TMNT film and the fourth iteration of this franchise? We'll dig into whether this latest effort could, in fact, carry the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles forward. Connect with Crooked Table Productions on social media: Facebook  |  Twitter  |  Instagram

Welcome back! 7 long years have passed since TMNT (2007) graced the big screen. Hundreds of people hard at work, scripting, planning, crafting, animating... and this is what they came up with. This week we're talking about the monstrous Michael Bay-produced series reboot from 2014 and we have a very special guest who eagle-eared listeners may recognize from podcast lore: Will Gertler, aka Will the fact checker, aka Will Nye the Science Guy.Will has never seen a piece of Ninja Turtles media before, so we thought this was a great opportunity to introduce him to the turts in the worst way possible. As is often the case we go on many digressions throughout, including Will's love of Will Smith and the product placement in I, Robot, another celebrity encounter from Ben's past, and a discussion of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer from the perspective of an actual scientist. This one is lots of fun and we'll hopefully be having Will back soon for a full bonus Oppenheimer episode! Join Alex and Ben next week for the supposedly superior sequel to this reboot: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows!

Everything is dark. I'm walking around on stage, selling the idea that I can't see anything. And it's giving me a golden opportunity to find the truth of the story. You see, I'm playing Carol, the lead in a play called Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer. In it, a sculptor and his fiancée (me) borrow expensive antique furniture from our out-of-town neighbors to try and impress an art collector. But then the power goes out (hence the black), and everything goes wrong (hence the comedy). What's really cool about the experience, though, is that the lighting is transposed. When the stage is lit, the cast is seemingly in darkness, and the characters can't see anything. But only when the stage goes dark can the characters finally be able to see themselves and their surroundings. This ended up being my favorite play to perform because I got to embody a character so far removed from what I'm used to. My special guest Brittany Ishibashi is no stranger to this experience. She lives her life immersed in story and has been a working actress since high school!  In this episode, she and I talk about playing characters, effective elements to enhance storytelling, and discuss questions like: What's the inside-out vs. outside-in approach to playing a character, and why is it crucial to gaining audience empathy? Why is an audience of just one person all you really need? And how can you easily and effectively open a story? What you will learn in this episode: How characters and story (in all its forms) can truly change or save lives How to encourage the spirit of play in your life and business Why music is such a universal part of the human experience in storytelling Who is Brittany? Born in Orange County, California, Brittany Ishibashi was raised by musical parents. Seeing her love for the arts, they encouraged her to try out the different facets of the entertainment world. Her passion for musical theater emerged at a young age, and she became a triple threat in dance, music, and acting. Brittany got her first big break right after graduating from high school when she was cast on J.J. Abrams' Felicity. She continued her education in Theatre, Film, and Television at UCLA while establishing her career and has gone on to work consistently over the years on numerous TV series. She's been on shows such as This Is Us, Political Animals, Grey's Anatomy, Grace and Frankie, The Office, Supernatural, and more. Most recently, you can watch Brittany play the villainous Tina Minoru on Marvel's Runaways, Claire Cormier on the CW's Tom Swift, and Tamiko Masuda on CBS' Hawaii Five-0. She also played the villain Karai in Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Jeff, and their three children. Daredevil may not have been anyone favorite superhero movie, but they green lit the spin-off anyway and in 2005 we got Elektra. The movie flopped financially and was panned by critics, but this week we're focusing on everything the movie does well! With a strong supporting cast and a costume right off the page, we find a thing or two to discuss while still finding the time to dive into the lore of Waluigi.Join the Best of the Rest discord: https://discord.gg/86P7jJXNPbEmail: bestoftherestpod@gmail.comSocial Media @BotRCast on Twitter, Instagram, FacebookBonus content: YoutubeTheme song (vocals) by Mark Benavides: InstagramMusic by Mitch (Depressed to Impress): Youtube, Twitch.tvLogo by Alex Brinegar: https://beardodoesdesign.com/  Additional artwork by Phillip Chacon, C7Productions: Instagram    Next week- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows!

On this episode of ActorSpeak, Austin Basis speaks with actor Brittany Ishibashi (Runaways, Supernatural, The Office, This Is Us, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows). In Part 1, we talk about seeing RENT, her life-changing car accident, Richard Green, Joan Scheckel, GHOSTFACERS, and how she uses music to inform her work. The amazingly talented Brittany Ishibashi most recently starred as the villainous Tina Minoru in Marvel's hit show Runaways on Hulu, and as Tamiko Masuda on CBS' Hawaii Five-0. She also played another iconic villain, Karai, in Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Born in Orange County, CA, Brittany was raised in a home filled with the arts. Brittany discovered her passion for musical theater at a young age, and went on to be a triple threat- excelling in dance, music & acting. She continued her formal education at UCLA's prestigious School of Theatre, Film & Television, while building her acting resume outside of class. Her first big break came right after she graduated from high school & was cast by J.J. Abrams on the hit show Felicity. Brittany has gone on to work consistently over the years on numerous television series, including: This Is Us, The Unicorn, Political Animals, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, Grace and Frankie, Young and Hungry, and Supernatural. After an exciting debut at Comic-Con, she reprised her role as Maggie Zeddmore in the Supernatural spinoff series GHOSTFACERS- which has developed a worldwide fan base. Brittany's energy, spirit & talent comes through in everything she does. This was especially true when she brought her dramatic chops to my short film The Fear We Share & blew everyone away with her stirring performance. She is a talented friend who provides a solid laugh track whenever we get together! He's small in the WWE world but he and Amell paired up well in fight scenes. Makes you realize in pro-wrestling he might be small but in life he's a big dude  CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES  Season Episode  “A Matter of Trust” (Date:20 Oct 2016) Article:http://comicbook.com/2016/10/20/arrow-easter-eggs-and-other-things-you-might-have-missed-in-a-ma/   “A Matter of Trust” is the name of a Billy Joel song; Marc Guggenheim is a huge Billy Joel song. The song's title happens to fit this episode's theme. Stardust -  Stardust, the name of the drug in this week's episode, has some special resonance for guest star Cody Runnels, also known as Cody Rhodes, the WWE Superstar formerly known as Stardust. Cody Runnels - He's Runnels here, not Rhodes, in the opening credits. That's likely because he doesn't actually own the trademark to "Cody Rhodes," his stage name with the WWE. Since Rhodes's father was Dusty Rhodes, he and his brother took on the family name when they came into professional wrestling. Now that he's no longer a member of the WWE family, he might not have easy access to his actual family's stage name. John Jr, - This is the first on-camera reference to John Diggle, Jr. in Arrow. Last week on The Flash, fans learned that John Diggle, friend and former bodyguard to Oliver Queen, has a son -- and that was a surprise. That's right: Barry Allen's excellent "Flashpoint" adventure through time created the unintended consequence of giving John Diggle a son -- John Diggle, Jr. -- rather than the daughter -- Sara Diggle -- fans got to know after she was born in season 3 of the hit CW drama. Deadshot - Deadshot, a member of the Suicide Squad and the deadly assassin long thought to have murdered John Diggle's brother, showed up in a vision to Dig this week, haunting him for killing Andy himself last season. Susan Williams - Susan Williams is, in the comics, the sister-in-law of Hal Jordan, one of Earth's Green Lanterns. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane in the early days of the Silver Age Green Lantern titles, Susan was a bit of a rabble-rouser then, too; she ended up in a relationship with one of the Jordan brothers while digging around into who Green Lantern was. Falling into a vat of chemicals is similar to the origin of the Joker Adrian Chase - Adrian Chase is introduced this week. The hot-headed, good-looking district attorney is actually better known as Vigilante in the comics.Created during Marv Wolfman's time on the New Teen Titans, Vigilante in the comics is a former New York district attorney who's set on the path of justice after his family is killed by the mob. The CW describes him similarly: Chase is "Star City's new district attorney and an ally of Mayor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who aims to clean up the streets through the legal system." “You have failed this city” make an appearance - like season 1 Lethal Weapon - Stardust burns his arm Terry Sloane - This week, we finally got to see Curtis suit up, going into the field in his Mister Terrific costume for the first time. He hasn't yet identified himself using the "Mister Terrific" name, although he did namecheck Terry Sloane -- the Golden Age Mr. Terrific from the comics -- as his inspiration (and the inspiration for the "Fair Play" jacket he wears). Trope of cool guy walking toward camera with explosion in background Oliver thinking Wild Dog's hockey mask is “cool” is likely a reference to Amell's role of Casey Jones in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.' Curtis calls it the “Arrowcave” ARROW NEWS:   Arrowverse Crossover is ‘very, very faithful' to DC's Invasion!  (Date: 14 Oct 2016) Marc Guggenheim promises that the crossover will be faithful to the story in the comics. In the comics, the Dominators assemble a coalition of extraterrestrial races to invade Earth, with the goal of eliminating the threat posed by metahumans. Unknown to their allies, the Dominators intend to harness the metagene and create their own army of metahumans. Wil Traval (Jessica Jones) will play Christopher Chance, aka the Human Target, a private investigator and bodyguard who assumes the identities of clients mark for assassination. This is not the Human Target's first TV appearance. Rick Springfield starred as Christopher Chance on a short-lived drama that aired in 1992 on ABC, and FOX aired its adaptation in 2011, which starred Mark Valley (John Scott on Fringe). Also, Cold will be part of the Legion of Doom. The 100th episode of ‘Arrow' promises to be big with appearances by John Barrowman as Merlin and Neal McDonough as Damian Darhk; the 100th episode will also be part of the big crossover, but Guggenheim says that the 100th will be ‘Arrow'-centric. The Top, played by Ashley Rickards, will also be appearing, alongside the very familiar, very missed face of Captain Cold. When Mirror Master and The Top go looking for Cold, they'll run into a little trouble with The Flash and his new speedster-in-training, Jesse Quick. Link:http://www.cbr.com/mirror-master-debuts-in-new-flash-promo/   Chris How Supergirl gets into the Crossover (Date: 20 Oct 2016) The 100th episode will, in fact, be part 3 of that crossover, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently spoke to Collider on how Supergirl is fitting in with the Arrowverse.  "Last year, Supergirl established that The Flash was able to make his way to what I call Earth-CBS, and it stands to reason that with the proper breach technology, the reverse can happen. Once the heroes realize that they're up against aliens, they decide that they need an alien on their side and, fortunately, Barry knows a really nice one. I don't think it's a big shock that, between Barry and Cisco, and all of their experiences with Earth-2 and the multi-verse, that they can pluck her from Earth-CBS." (Date: 20 Oct 2016) Hamill was spotted on the set of The Flashl ooking decidedly Joker-esque. Considering that Flash is currently exploring an alternate timeline in its "Flashpoint" season, it's possible this is a Joker inspired alternate version of the Trickster. Or maybe, just maybe, many fans will get their wish and finally see Hamill take the role of the Clown Prince of Crime into live action.
