Christmas is upon us, with festive tunes ringing in stores and even around the home. Wellington Mornings music man James Irwin has compiled a list of some lesser-known New Zealand Christmas tunes, and even uncovered a long lost Beatles Christmas song - released long before Paul McCartney and John Lennon released their own festive hits. Power Salad's entry in the "The FuMP Desecrates Tom Lehrer" tribute album. Being a huge fan of not only Mr Lehrer but also the great Danny Kaye, this one seemed a natural to do, in addition to the fact that it really deserved a full orchestral treatment like the original 1960 recordings. Care was taken to not only arrange the orchestral parts tastefully, but also to stea---uh, mimi-- erm, cop---INTERPRET the vocal performance of Mr Lehrer, down to the Russian bits, which I am told are real. I'll believe it when I see it. So here's "Lobachevsky", and as John Lennon once said on a Beatles Christmas record, "It's only cheap...." Chris Mezzolesta on vocal, Cossacks, tambourine & keyboards/programming.

As we're in the period between Christmas and New Year, the gap between episodes is going to be longer than normal, and the podcast proper is going to be back on January the ninth. So nobody has to wait around for another fortnight for a new episode, I thought I'd upload some old Patreon bonus episodes to fill the gap. Every year around Christmas the bonus episodes I do tend to be on Christmas songs and so this week I'm uploading three of those. These are older episodes, so don't have the same production values as more recent episodes, and are also shorter than more recent bonuses, but I hope they're still worth listening to. Hello, and welcome to this week's second Patreon bonus episode. I'm recording this on December the twenty-third, so whether you hear this before Christmas is largely down to how quickly we can get the main episode edited and uploaded. Hopefully, this is going up on Christmas Eve and you're all feeling appropriately festive. Normally for the Patreon bonuses in the last week of December I choose a particularly Christmassy record from the time period we're covering in the main podcast -- usually a perennial Christmas hit like something off the Phil Spector Christmas album or the Elvis Christmas album. However, this year we're in the mid sixties, a period when none of the big hits of US or UK Christmas music were released, because it's after the peak of US Christmas music and before the peak of UK Christmas music. There were Christmas albums by people like James Brown, but they weren't major parts of the discography. So today, we're going to have a brief run-through of the Beatles' Christmas records. These were flexi-discs -- which for those of you who are too young to remember them were records pressed on very, very, thin, cheap plastic, which used to be attached to things like kids' comics or cereal boxes as promotional gimmicks -- sent out to members of the group's fan club. In a way, these were the Beatles' very own Patreon bonuses, sent out to fans and supporters, and not essential works, but hopefully interesting and fun. They very rarely had anything like a full song, being mostly made up of sketches and recorded messages, and other than a limited-edition vinyl reissue a few years back they've never been put on general release -- though one song from the discs, "Christmas Time is Here Again", *was* released as a B-side of the CD single of "Free as A Bird" in 1995: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] Other than that, the Christmas records remain one of those parts of the Beatles catalogue which have never seen a proper widespread release. The first record was made on October the 17th 1963, at the same recording session as "I Want to Hold Your Hand", at the instigation of Tony Barrow, the group's publicist, who also came up with a script for the group to depart from: [Excerpt, the Beatles' first Christmas record] Barrow apparently edited the recording himself, using scissors and tape, and much of that was just taking out the swearing. Incidentally, I've seen some American sources talking about the word "Crimble" being a word that the Beatles made up themselves, but it's actually a fairly standard bit of Scouse slang. The second Christmas record was recorded at the end of the sessions for Beatles For Sale and was much the same kind of thing, though this time they incorporated sound effects: [Excerpt: The Beatles' Second Christmas Record] That was never sent to American fans. Instead, they got a cardboard copy of an edited version of the first record (it's possible to make records out of cardboard, but they can only be played a handful of times). They wouldn't get another Christmas record until 1968, though British fans kept receiving them. The third record sees the group parodying other people's hits, including a brief rendition of "It's the Same Old Song" interrupted by George Harrison saying they can't sing it because of copyright, and an attempt to sing Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" and "Auld Lang Syne" at the same time: [Excerpt: The Beatles' Third Christmas Record] The fourth record, from 1966, was recorded during the early sessions for "Strawberry Fields Forever", and titled "Pantomime: Everywhere It's Christmas". For those outside the UK and its sphere of cultural influence, pantomime is a British Xmas stage tradition which is very hard to explain if you've not experienced it, involving performances that are ostensibly of fairy stories like Cinderella or Snow White, but also usually involving drag performances -- the male lead is usually played by a young woman, while there's usually an old woman character played by a man in drag -- with audience participation, songs, and old jokes of the "I do declare, the Prince's balls get bigger every year!" type. As the title suggests, then, the 1966 Christmas record is an attempt at an actual narrative of sorts, though a surreal, incoherent one. It comes across very much like the Goon show -- though like one of the later episodes where Milligan has lost all sense of narrative coherence: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Pantomime: Everywhere It's Christmas"] it's probably the best of the group's Christmas efforts, and certainly the most fully realised to this point. The 1967 Christmas record, "Christmas Time is Here Again", is even more ambitious. It's another narrative, which sees the group playing a fictitious group called the Ravellers, auditioning for the BBC: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] It also features parodies of broadcasting formats, which I've seen a few people suggest were inspired by the Bonzo Dog Band's then-recent Craig Torso Show radio performances, but which seem to me more indicative just of a general shared sense of humour: [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] But that record has become most famous for having one of the closest things on any of these records to a full song, the title track "Christmas Time is Here Again": [Excerpt: The Beatles, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] As well as later being issued as the B-side of a CD single, that was also remade by Ringo as a solo record: [Excerpt: Ringo Starr, "Christmas Time is Here Again"] Although my favourite use of the song is actually as an interpolation, with slightly altered lyrics, in "Xmas Again" by Stew of the Negro Problem, one of my favourite current songwriters: [Excerpt: Stew, "Xmas Again"] "Christmas Time is Here Again" would be the last Christmas record the group would make together. For their final two Christmas releases, they recorded their parts separately and got their friend, the DJ Kenny Everett, who was known at this point for his tricks with tape editing, and who shared their sense of humour (he later went on to become a successful TV comedian) to collage them together into something listenable. The highlight of the 1968 record comes from George's contribution. George, a lover of the ukulele, got Tiny Tim to record his version of "Nowhere Man" for the record: [Excerpt: Tiny Tim, "Nowhere Man"] And for the seventh and final Christmas single, recorded after the group had split up but before the split was announced, Everett once again cobbled it together from separate recordings, this time a chat between John and Yoko, Ringo improvising a song and plugging his new film, and Paul singing an original Christmas song: [Excerpt: Paul McCartney, "Merry, Merry, Year"] George's contribution was a single sentence. In 1970, the fan club members got one final record -- an actual vinyl album, compiling all the previous Christmas records in one place. All the Beatles would in future record solo Christmas singles, some of which became perennial classics, but there would never be another Beatles Christmas record [Excerpt, the end of the third Beatles Christmas record]

In our sixth annual office christmas party extravaganza we get crunk! First we take a look back at the most talked about topics on the show this past year to Credere's dismay. Some personal gains and hopes for the future. Brandon tries to break down how The Beatles are the only comparison to 2pac. Drake somehow gets involved and a history lesson is given, you're welcome. Tripledemic the sequel. Bad commercials and the Tom Cruise commercial. Bullet Train. In a real manly battle the boys pit Bieber vs Messi in Good for that Guy honors. Merry Christmas and every day is a holiday from Liquor License.
The 1970s … a boom time for smoooth music but dark times for The Beatles, torn apart and born again in their separate musical identities, each feeling their way to rediscover who they were before The Beatles, who they are now, and who they could become (before their soft new shells harden). All four would flirt with becoming Christmas Beatles, but only John Lennon and Paul McCartney would achieve immortality on Smooth Radio at Christmastime. Who is the “immortal snail” and will John and Paul have to face it before the Earth is destroyed? Deploying their weapons of passive-aggressive song writing from both ends of a troubled decade, John and Paul are locked in a very slow battle for Christmas Beatle supremacy. Paul harnesses the ear-piercing power of his new Commodore VIC20 home computer. John name-drops his family struggles, leaves one child and embarks on a life-long odyssey to find the another, but finds time to send us all on a guilt trip. A further two dark souls would also be born in this decade, their ultimate destiny would be to analyse, interpret, critique, speculate wildly, and sit in judgement of much greater people that came before them. This time with two songs and two artists to consider - can they upset two sets of fans at once? Challenge accepted. Is there really a debate as to which song is better? Is John idealistic, unrealistic or both? When was Paul cool, exactly? Is there a race of cowards? War is over if you want it (or fear it?) (or is it?). Also discussed: The Pogues, Maroon 5, Tom Mcrae, Eminem versus Moby, Madonna versus Aled Jones, Jay Z versus Burt Bacharach, Don't Look Now, In Bruges, and protesting in a bag. We also have brand new (and terrible) Christmas bob-bon puns to moan over. Learn the famous painters of history at the same time. What is Boxing Day anyway? Is it true that John and Paul had a physical fight? We have the exclusive audio of it going down. Simply wonderful regular segments: Misheard Lyrics, Internet Theories, and more. Would you like to appear (well, vocally) on the show? Do you have a pop song or ear-worm from the SMOOTH FM genre that's infested your mind and needs to be investigated? Visit this page https://speakpipe.com/lyrics to record us your own voicemail hot-take on your specific smooth song of suckiness. You could be on a future episode! Julen betød rigtig meget for The Beatles og deres fans i 60´erme.

In this special Bonus Episode of The Walrus Was Paul, host Paul Romanuk takes a look at the four songs released by the Beatles that grabbed the prestigious Number One position on the UK Christmas Singles chart. The Beatles hold the distinction of having more Christmas Number Ones than any other group. Paul McCartney also managed to pull off a Christmas Number One with his post-Beatles band, Wings. This episode features a brief overview of each song - the story behind the song and its chart success in the UK and North America. Here's a list of all of the UK Christmas Number Ones from over the years: https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/every-official-christmas-number-1-ever-__3618/ (officialcharts.com) As an aside, the Beatles also dominated the UK Christmas Number One Albums Chart - where they hold the distinction of having nailed the top position a record seven times. https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/every-official-christmas-number-1-album__34709/ (Here's a story about that.)
Ho ho ho! It's another We Don't Believe in Beatles Christmas special, just in time for us to discuss a little documentary that's been getting some attention lately... The boys catch up and discuss the Get Back mini-series, how it influenced the post-Beatles catalogue, Peter Jackson's earlier films, plus we compare and contrast the various iterations of the Let it Be album from over the years. Of course, we then cover Paul's Wonderful Christmastime for you all. We hope everyone out there has a safe and happy holiday season, we'll be back for season 3 very soon. Last year, Twelve Songs did its first crossover episode with Jonathan and Julia Pretus of the Ranking the Beatles podcast. During the COVID shutdown in 2020, Jonathan took the time on his hands as an excuse to rank all of The Beatles' songs, from his least favorite to his favorite. That list morphed from a Facebook conversation into a podcast with his wife Julia as the voice of reason. Since The Beatles didn't release any true Christmas songs during their time together, last year we ranked the annual fan club-only releases, testing Julia's patience in the process. This year, we got together for a second crossover, this time ranking their post-Beatles Christmas music. Julia had reached a saturation point between watching, discussing, and podcasting about Peter Jackson's Get Back and opted for a badly needed night off. Jonathan and I discussed the obvious choices by John and Paul as well as less obvious ones from George and Ringo. If you like what hear, you might consider adding Ranking The Beatles to your podcast feed. Thanks as usual to our sponsors at Car Floats, who asked me to contribute a Christmas music playlist to their website. I'm pleased to have curated a number of playlists this season including the 23-hour “Twelve Songs of Christmas Radio” playlist on Spotify. Go to it and click Shuffle to get the all-Christmas radio experience but with a greater variety of music. You can also still get this year's downloadable listeners-only playlist by writing me at alex@myspiltmilk.com to request it. If you haven't already done so, please do what you have to do to get Twelve Songs in your podcast feed. You can find us at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, and Spotify.

Special Christmas Episode! Host Paul Romanuk takes a look at The Beatles Christmas records and solo Christmas songs.... The Walrus Was Paul: https://www.romycast.com (https://www.romycast.com)
Every holiday season from 1963-1969, members of the Official Beatles Fan Club would receive a special present from the Fab Four: a limited edition, fan-club-only flexidisc record, made just for them. What started out as a brilliant turn of PR, scripted to strengthen the appeal and bond between band and fan turned into an outlet for the boys to create whimsey and weirdness without consideration of commerciality. As they got turned on, so did the Christmas records. Bringing in elements of their beloved Goon Shows, pantomime and theatre, avant garde sound collages, the band turned in increasingly creative, then increasingly distant records every year, providing a fascinating glimpse into their trajectory throughout their career. To discuss this curio in the catalog, we teamed up for this crossover episode with Christmas music fanatic, previous guest, and host of the 12 Songs of Christmas Podcast, Alex Rawls. For several years now, in addition to his regular music website, My Spilt Milk, he devotes the end of the year to discussing Christmas music old and new, it's place in the zeitgeist and the relationship we have it. It's a fantastic podcast we highly recommend subscribing to. If you want to dive deeper into the Beatles Christmas discs, they're pretty easy to find on Youtube. They reissued them in a 7" boxset in 2017, which can still be purchased should you love them and decide to add them to your collection. Also featured in this episode is The Breton Sound's cover of "Wonderful Christmastime," which you can stream on all streaming sites, or download on iTunes if you really want it, and The Fab Four's "Tomorrow Never Knows"-ish cover of "Jingle Bells," which is absolutely a blast. They have a Christmas album called HARK!, all holiday songs done in Beatles-style, and it's a hoot. Highly recommend. Gestur þáttarins að þessu sinni er Hallur Ingólfsson tónlistarmaður og leikskáld. Hann mætir með uppáhalds ROKKplötuna sína klukkan 21.00 Plata þáttarins er splunkuný plata frá hljómsveitinni The Who sem er samnefnd hljómsveitinni. Hún er tólfta hljóðversplata The Who, en sú fyrsta; My generation, kom út 1965. Það var sagt frá því opinberlega í janúar á þessu ári að The Who væri að vinna nýrri plötu, fyrstu plötunni með nýju efni í 13 ár, en síðasta plata; Endless Wire, kom út 2006. Þrír ferningar mynda nafnið; Who, og svo eru hinir 22 myndir sem, þegar þærkoma saman, minna allar á hljómsveitina. Við heyrum 3-4 lög af The Who í Füzz í kvöld. Óskalagasíminn verður opnaður (5687-123) um kl. 20 og A+B er svo að þessu sinni lítil jólaplata með Slade - A hlið og B hlið. At the suggestion of press officer Tony Barrow, The Beatles ended their first year of national fame by thanking the members of their UK fan club with a flexi-disc single containing a specially recorded Christmas message. So began an annual tradition that not only endured as long as they were together, but also mirrored and encapsulated their career: from the innocent fun of 1963 and 1964 to the biting cynicism of 1965, offbeat creativity of 1966, psychedelic surrealism of 1967, disparate contributions of 1968 and complete fragmentation of 1969. What starts off joyous ends up sad, with much of life in between – and guest appearances by George Martin, Mal Evans, Victor Spinetti, Yoko Ono and Tiny Tim. Featuring: “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)” 1963: “The Beatles’ Christmas Record” 1964: “Another Beatles Christmas Record” + outtakes 1965: “The Beatles’ Third Christmas Record” + outtakes 1966: “The Beatles’ Fourth Christmas Record: Everywhere It’s Christmas” + outtakes 1967: “Christmas Time Is Here Again!” 1968: “The Beatles’ 1968 Christmas Record” 1969: “The Beatles’ Seventh Christmas Record: Happy Christmas 1969” Dora Bryan – “All I Want for Christmas is a Beatle”
It's Christmas! And to celebrate, comedy writers Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris join in the festivities by discussing 'From Then To You' - The Beatles' 1970 compilation of the fan club flexis.

George Harrison and Eric Clapton first became friendly during the Beatlemania era. The Yardbirds were on the bill of the 1964 Beatles Christmas show. By 1967, the two became close friends, and Eric was invited to the exalted position of guesting on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." They shared many things over the next few years including homes, guitars and an extraordinary woman. Join us next week as we take their story through the solo years!

It has turned into a tradition, the BDJ Christmas remix; in the past 4 years, a Christmas special was posted here, often lasting for 30 mins or more. This year, the Cellar received numerous requests for remixes, as a follow up to the broadcast of remixes in the Fab4Cast 64 and 65. (listen at http://web.avrotros.nl/podpourri/luisteren/fab4cast.aspx) Some requests were for remixes with songs by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), others requested remixes using the Beatles Christmas records (issued to members of the Beatles fanclub in the 60's). As a stroke of genius, we decided to combimne all requests, and mash-up ELO with the Beatles Christmas records. The result may not be the finest tune you've ever heard, but it is still more pleasing than Happy Christmas (War Is Over), or Wonderful Christmas Time. Only Ding Dong Ding Dong comes close......
It's a Fab Christmas with Beatles Christmas messages from the 60's, Christmas song demos, live Christmas songs by Paul, Ringo's Christmas album medley ~ 78 minutes of Festive Fabness! Ho Ho Ho & Yeah Yeah Yeah !!!

If you can picture a jalopy crammed full of thrift-store-clothing-clad carolers singing and playing hymns with acoustic instruments as they bounce merrily along through the snow under a winter moon, maybe you can imagine the sound of The Lower Lights on their cheerful new Christmas album without even taking a listen. But do take a listen, you'll be glad you did.Producer Scott Wiley provides the quirky recording space where all the magic happens at June Audio, in Provo, Utah. In a room filled with instruments and mics at the ready and looking like it's decorated for A Beatles Christmas all year long, he collected faithful friends and musicians to spontaneously arrange and record the holiday songs they love best over a joyful five-day period. In this week's audio interview, Scott talks about the group dynamics, the surprising reaction to unexpected fans from young to old, and ultimately why The Lower Lights do what they do. Like I said before, take a listen, you'll be glad you did. That's this week on The Cricket and Seagull.
The gospel of Luke tells of the nativity in its own way, necessitating its own Beatles Christmas podcast version: while Matthew (see preceding Podcast) talks about the wordly aspects (king Herod, the wise men and their rich gifts) and the nativity rooted in Judaism, Luke speaks more about the spiritual impact and the break with Jewish traditions. Therefore, we selected more 'spiritual' tracks for this podcast, and included tracks recorded after the break-up. The incidental music is the soundtrack of 'The Family Way', composed by McCartney.
Christmas Time Is Here Again ! A special time for Beatles fans: the Beatles did Christmas shows in their early days, and released special 'nonsense' records for their fanclub all through the Fab's career. Enough reasons to release this BDJ Chritsmas special; it is a new - yet ancient - way to celeberate Christmas. Gone are the Ho-Ho-Ho's of Father C, decorated trees, mangers and shepherds. In its stead, we find Christmas Remastered as it sounds best: the Gospel of Matthew, performed by James Earl Jones and the Beatles. Sit back, and contemplate the first 2 chapters, complete and unabridged.
The traditional Christmas records were sent out exclusively to Beatles fan club members from 1963-1969. These recordings not only featured Christmas songs by the Beatles, but also include entertaining ad-libs and pantomime banter between all 4 Beatles, which provide a fascinating insight into how their lives changed dramatically between `63 & `69. Kenny Everett produced and featured in the Beatles Christmas records in 1968 & 1969. Zak - Ringo's son, designed the cover of the 1969 record. The 1966 record, with a cover designed by Julian Lennon, was called Pantomime and featured a toast to the Queen. These records were a Christmas tradition for thousands of Beatles fans around the world. The 1970 Chtristmas record was never released, since the Beatles broke up that year. The BDJ Bureau of Investigation discovered the orginal tapes of this record, and unleashed 21st century technology to Remaster the tapes. The result: a stunning sound picture of the last year of the Beatles, when innocent laughter gave way to Business, Politics and Children. Besides the Fab Four, this record also features: Judy and The Duets - Christmas With The Beatles Happy Christmas (War Is Over) - John Holt & The Plastic Ono Band: Remixed by BDJ White Christmas - Bing Crosby Dora Bryan - If I Were A Fairy Julian & Cynthia Lennon Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney
