Last Christmas may have lost the battle for Christmas Number 1 this year, but in reality – The Best Song Ever™ doesn't need trinkets!!Not when it makes bank every year!We also find out how Manchester United's inconsistency in the 80s may just have led to its creation.God only knows the genre-defining songs being created thanks to their current iteration. We remember Rob Reiner and his impact on 80s cinema, and Paulo pays the ultimate tribute by finally watching a kissing movie that he's avoided due to his inconceivable mistrust of Spaniards (he finally gets why that's funny). We bring you some Stranger Things audio accompaniments and Two 80s Truths and a Lie makes us realise classic rock is now from the 80s, wonder what stunt the Hoff is up to, and if we Cher(ed) fake news?Jump To:Earnings from Christmas Songs (00:03:49): https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/37600708/wham-christmas-song-earns-astonishing-amount/George Michael's 2003 “Last Christmas” Performance (00:08:12): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnlXotGDwqwThe match that was playing when Last Christmas was written (00:10:58): https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/dec/17/the-knowledge-football-match-wham-watching-wrote-last-christmasRob Reiner Tragedy & News (00:13:12): https://people.com/rob-reiner-death-investigation-timeline-11870197https://people.com/rob-reiner-death-investigation-timeline-11870197https://www.irishstar.com/culture/entertainment/nick-reiner-dark-twisted-troubled-36437810Rob Reiner's 1980s Film Legacy (00:17:00): https://www.news24.com/life/arts-and-entertainment/film/rob-reiners-enduring-legacy-5-iconic-films-that-cemented-his-place-in-hollywood-history-20251219-1240The Princess Bride: A First-Time Viewing (00:21:58): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47p_01b9p1IStranger Things Radio & 80s Nostalgia (00:31:11): https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/stranger-things-wsqk-squawk-80s-radio-station-1235485657/Stranger Things Playlist & Easter Eggs (00:34:10): https://newsroom.spotify.com/2025-12-16/stranger-things-season-5-playlist-takeover/Two 80s Truths and a Lie (00:36:10): https://wcmspi.com/2025/08/20/the-most-played-songs-on-classic-rock-radio-stations-this-year/#:~:text=1.%20%E2%80%9CLivin'%20on%20a%20Prayer%E2%80%9D%2C,Bon%20Jovi&text=2.%20%E2%80%9CWelcome%20to%20the%20Jungle%E2%80%9D%2C,Guns%20N'%20Roses&text=3.%20%E2%80%9CSweet%20Child%20O'%20Mine%E2%80%9D%2C,Guns%20N'%20Roses&text=4.%20%E2%80%9CHere%20I%20Go%20Again%E2%80%9D%2C,WhitesnakeCher Viral Post Debunked (00:38:30): https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/celebrity/articles/fact-check-cher-did-not-055832259.html# 80s pop culture, # That 80s Show, # Christmas special, # Wham!, # George Michael, # Kylie Minogue, # Christmas number one, # "Last Christmas," # holiday traditions, # Christmas songs, # royalties, # top-earning Christmas songs, # George Michael Fund, # mental health, # LGBTQ+ youth, # Rob Reiner, # 80s movies, # "This Is Spinal Tap," # "Stand By Me," # "When Harry Met Sally," # iconic lines, # Kathy Bates, # Stephen King adaptations, # "A Few Good Men," # The Princess Bride, # parody, # Cary Elwes, # Inigo Montoya, # Andre the Giant, # nostalgia, # 80s music, # Christmas traditions, # podcast, # pop culture commentary, # holiday season, # legacy, # film influence, # mockumentary, # iconic performances, # Christmas treats, # family struggles, # celebrity news, # trending topics.
Matchday 17 was a weekend which started off with draws and then became a series of one-way results, some in emphatic fashion. Matt Clark (@MattClark_08) and Román De Arquer (@Aeroslavee) review it all.We start with the on-paper partidazo between Villarreal and Barcelona, which was unfortunately conditioned by a first half red card. The visitors won comfortably in the end to become Christmas number one, keeping Real Madrid four points back. Los Blancos had their own 2-0 victory on Saturday night against Sevilla, but left more doubts once again. The only real bright sparks were the form of Thibaut Courtois and Kylian Mbappé, who equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's club record for goals in a calendar year.Atleti won convincingly on the road to leave Girona in the danger zone, while Betis put four past Getafe to apply some pressure on Espanyol. In Part Two we discuss Elche returning to their best form and our concern for Rayo, who might be taking their eye off the ball domestically. The managerless sides played out a 1-1 draw, but Real Sociedad will really feel that it was two points dropped. Both clubs confirmed the appointments of their new coaches, so we evaluate their potential chances. Guillermo Almada has already begun life at Oviedo, but could not prevent the inevitable stalemate. We end by picking our moments of the year and wishing our listeners and subscribers at lllonline.substack.com a happy festive season. ¡¡Feliz Navidad!! Hosted on Acast. Tim Sheppard - While many attempt to write the next Christmas number one, they rarely produce anything that gets to the heart of what this season is all about. Mary's famous words at the start of Luke's gospel show us the meaning of Christmas—explaining why it is a cause for great joy, and a challenging us to respond rightly to God's remarkable offer.
It's December, so come open this week's Advent Calendar of misery with Ros Taylor and Gavin Esler. Is the Mail/Telegraph frenzy over Rachel Reeves allegedly misleading the Commons over Britain's finances just a mountain out of a molehill? How is the Budget fallout settling? Does David Lammy really want to bring trial by jury to an end for all but the most serious cases? Oh, and having failed to stop one war in Ukraine, will Trump manage to start one in Venezuela before Christmas? Another year, another Christmas Special! We've scraped the barrel of festive ideas and selected Love Actually, the "greatest Christmas movie of all time", as the unfortunate premise of this year's audio horrorshow. In this edition, Ross G will be asking questions that are very loosely based on the Richard Curtis classic, with answers from Ross D, Anna and Owen. Including: In Love Actually, grumpy husband Alan Rickman gets into trouble when he buys a necklace for a woman who isn't his wife. If you were to buy a gold necklace for another profession, other than L&D, what would it be and why? Creepy romantic Andrew Lincoln spends Love Actually pining after Keira Knightley: The wife of his best friend. What aspect of L&D do you secretly love, but know that you can never be involved with? Spurned husband Colin Firth spends Love Actually learning Portuguese to be with the woman he loves. What L&D language do you plan on spending the Christmas season learning? Aging rocker Bill Nighy performs his single 'Christmas Is All Around Me' naked on TV, to celebrate it taking the Christmas Number 1 spot. What's your great ambition for 2025? During the discussion, Ross D referenced our newsletter 'Every learning intervention you design should be award-worthy' Ross G referenced the Mitchell & Webb sketch 'Are we the baddies?' Anna recommended our 'critical thinking' Skill Bite course. The papers Anna discussed were: Carter, J. W., & Youssef-Morgan, C. (2022). Psychological capital development effectiveness of face-to-face, online, and Micro-learning interventions. Education and Information Technologies, 27(5), 6553-6575. Carpenter, S. K., Pan, S. C., & Butler, A. C. (2022). The science of effective learning with spacing and retrieval practice. Nature Reviews Psychology, 1(9), 496-511. In 'What I Learned This Week', Ross D revealed a shocking truth about Darlene Love's 'All Alone On Christmas'. Ross G recommended A Christmas Carol, as read by Hugh Grant. Problem Patterns - "Christmas Number One" a 2020 self-released single This week, we are continuing a long-held tradition of featuring Christmas-themed Songs of the Day, selected by Brian Foss, one of the hosts of KEXP's punk show Sonic Reducer. He will be hosting his 20th annual Punk Rock Xmess on Saturday, December 23rd from 9 PM to midnight PT, and then tune in on Monday, December 25th from 7 AM - 4 PM PT, for No Standards Christmas. You won't hear a single "holiday standard," but instead get a mix of soul, rock, blues, hip-hop, and more! Problem Patterns — self-described as Belfast's pre-eminent DIY feminist queerpunk quartet — released their highly-anticipated debut album back in October, titled Blouse Club. But today's Song of the Day takes us back to 2020, when they released this single during a tumultuous season. As they wrote at the time: This year, many of us will be spending Christmas alone for the first time ever, and for a few of us, that is the norm. The holiday season can be an incredibly isolating time in general. We wrote this song in an effort to try and look on the bright side of an otherwise tough situation. For the video, we wanted to collaborate and connect with a few friendly faces. We may not be able to be together right now, but stay hopeful. Whatever your plans are, we hope that you are safe and sound.Sending love to anyone who needs it.Merry Christmas,Bev, Beth, Ciara and Alanah xxxx Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There was a time when the Christmas Number 1 single was a hotly contested battle but is it still relevant in the world of streaming and what is the history of the Irish Christmas number 1? Sean was joined by Kirsty Blake-Knox, Columnist with Irish Independent to discuss...
We need to stop pretending we live in a democracy. The essence of a democratic state is rule by the people, for the people. This has only ever been an illusion to mask oligarchic power. Upheld by the media, this illusion serves to sequester resources, power and divide a population who should be united in the face of their exploitation. We are a society of altruists governed by psychopaths. This is the message of George Monbiot, distinguished writer and activist, on today's episode. George's Guardian columns are read all over the world, lauded for their big picture scope on issues of climate, justice and politics. A fervent anti-capitalist and environmental campaigner, George joins me to discuss political, economic and legal corruption, the link between colonialism and strong welfare states, social tipping points, and movement-building. This is a wide-ranging and thorough discussion covering violence, sabotage, language and system dynamics: You cannot control a complex system from the centre—we are fighting against those who want to do just that at the expense of everything else.Planet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it. This is the anthem we've been waiting for, a rallying cry in the dark to take action before all is lost. Let's get it to Christmas Number 1 in the UK charts to pierce the mainstream.
