Stay safe and healthy out there! Sapolsky's book provides a bird’s eye view on how our behavior evolves from seconds to months and years prior to the time that we act. It is well-stocked with excellent lessons about neuroscience, biology, genes, and culture. This lengthy book is engaging throughout and tackles complicated and controversial topics. Sapolsky provides an important biological link to explain the ways that we behave. He emphasizes that our biology is inextricably linked to our cultures and hierarchies. He takes on the challenges of social comparisons, wealth inequality, and systemic poverty. Relative positions in society link back to our mental health with implications for our health and biological function. Human happiness in the corporate world is discussed. It is impacted by A. Autonomy, B. Place in the hierarchy, and C. Number of direct supervised employees. A and B impact our well being in a positive way, while C increases our perceived stress. Three keys to lowering executive stress are noted: 1. Maintain a strong place in a hierarchy 2. Gain autonomy over your decisions 3. Outsource much of the daily micro management Other critical drivers of behaviors are discussed related to market participation. These include economic exchange games including the ultimatum game. People who participate in high trade volume (whether it be in a financial market or a street market) tend toward making fair offers. This establishes trust and reputation which lead to human thriving and the development of productive civilizations. This has implications about need for autonomy and experience in growing your own success. Zero-sum thinking leads toward people avoiding you. There needs to be a healthy balance between cooperation and competition. You can go very far in life if you ensure that you maintain mutual benefit with any sort of deal you make. The book frames many sophisticated and complex behaviors in terms of evolutionary theory, genes, and neurobiology. Honor and revenge cultures lead to tremendous stress and unhappiness. Sapolsky reminds us that so many systems from culture down to genes is one of modulation. He also serves as President of Physicians for Ancestral Health, and on the scientific advisory board of Hintsa Performance. Tommy graduated with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, a medical degree from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in physiology and neuroscience from the University of Oslo. In this episode, we discuss scientific literacy and how a non-practitioner or specialist (your average fitness buff, in other words) can become more comfortable reading primary literature and ask better questions towards improving your health and performance. We also talk about how normative average values around blood chemistry can be misleading to athletes. In this IMMERSIVE episode, “Empathy,” our goal is to immerse you in a soundscape that evokes empathy and persuade you to block empathy through rationalization. Later, we evoke empathic distress and give you ways to reduce this distress by cultivating something called empathic care. To preserve this immersive experience, we stripped out a lot of the reporting we did on the science of empathy. Here, you can find out more about the science. We’ll walk you through the episode, and point out materials – interviews we did with researchers, journal articles we dug up, books we read – that let you dig deeper into the research. SCENE: Harold Mitchell, a homeless man and you’re imagining what he’s thinking and feeling. WHAT THIS DOES: This experimental procedure was adapted for the show. It uses text from Daniel Batson’s research and has been shown to induce empathy in those who read the text. We elaborated on it by including audio of a Chicago homeless man (Ronald Davis) so that you could feel empathy before we define it. WHAT THIS DOES: Gives you rationalizations that will help you block empathy. It also argues against rationalizations (but not intensely) The dinner party characters were given extensive interweaving backstories and core ideas to bring up during this improvised discussion. Many lines of research went into this construction. And like any signal, you can BLOCK IT… and NOT feel empathy. And we often do it in one of THREE WAYS. By number 1,RATIONALIZING, which means coming up with reasons not to feel empathy. This is exactly what most of the people in the dinner party were doing. Number 2, You can escape… the situation. You can cross the street and that physically stops you from encountering the signal. Number 3… you can suppress this signal by helping… that would fulfill a person’s need and stop the person from making you feeling empathy. [40:47] After the age of 35 or so your reproductive fitness increases, if you stop having your own babies and you start investing in your daughter's kids.
