Howdy guys! This episode was originally supposed to be about “betrayal trauma” but I got derailed by some very cool research and just had to discuss my THEORY on what mirror neurons and theory of mind (ToM) are for when it comes to sleep and wellness. I will absolutely be covering betrayal trauma next week so stay tuned, also I just finished the book on the neural mechanisms of reading and dyslexia so the episode two weeks from now will be jam packed with information on how to accommodate dyslexic readers and hopefully that'll be helpful on y'alls reading and learning journey!  Thank you so much for joining me on this journey - I do apologize if it wasn't easy to follow, I truly didn't plan this one out so I will use more accessible language in the following episodes.  I really did enjoy making this episode though, sharing information gives me such joy and I'm wishing everyone a happy National Autism Acceptance Month! Happy Women's History Month! This week we're discussing the wonderful women of STEAM (yes, we include the arts here) that have had their work stolen, co-opted, or overlooked by men and the dominant culture. Thank you to all the women in academia, research, creative fields, business, politics, etc. who persist, push back, and put men in check - I absolutely cannot wait to read your stories and studies, I know they'll be *chefs kiss.* I know I mispronounced a lot in this episode, as always feel free to shoot me a DM or comment with correct pronunciation, I really do appreciate the help. Also yes, I meant to say “retrograde menstruation” not “reverse menstruation” - the world simply escaped me. Is Community-Based Artmaking at the Heart of Cultural Democracy? In this conversation, community arts organizer, educator and theater maker Matt Schwarzman describes his mission to make collaborative art making a regular, normal, expected part of everyday life. A movement that has quietly grown for decades, but now faces a new test in a time of democratic strain.Along the way, he traces his influences from John o' Neill and the Free Southern the to the grassroots cultural movements of the 1980s and 90s that helped shape a generation of artists who see culture not as decoration but as civic infrastructure.Matt's journey winds through several decades of cultural organizing from sea to era arts jobs in Philadelphia to community organizing in Oakland and youth theater in post Katrina New Orleans.Across these projects, a single thread emerges the idea that community arts is a learnable, cross sector civic practice, an amalgam of organizing, teaching and art making. In our conversation, we talk about:The influence of seminal cultural leaders like John O'Neal, whose minimalist storytelling and story circle methodology help build national networks of cultural democracyHow youth arts programs can serve as modern rites of passage that help young people claim civic voice and leadershipAnd how storytelling, imagination and collective creation are foundational skills for sustaining democratic life.Notable MentionsPeopleMat Schwarzman – Trinity City ArtsCommunity arts organizer, educator, theater maker, and co-creator of Trinity City Comics and A Beginner's Guide to Community-Based Arts.John O'Neal – SNCC Digital GatewayPlaywright, storyteller, organizer, and founder of Junebug Productions; a key influence on Schwarzman's understanding of cultural democracy and story circles.Keith Knight – K ChroniclesCartoonist and collaborator with Mat Schwarzman on A Beginner's Guide to Community-Based Arts.Rhodessa Jones – Cornell Arts & SciencesPerformer, teacher, and co-artistic director of Cultural Odyssey, cited in the episode through her theater work with formerly incarcerated women.Rinku SenOrganizer, strategist, and writer whose work at the Center for Third World Organizing helped shape Schwarzman's understanding of community organizing.Gary Delgado – American UniversityOrganizer, scholar, and founder of the Center for Third World Organizing; one of the people Schwarzman credits with teaching him organizing practice.Steve Prince – Studio WebsiteArtist and educator who worked with Trinity City Arts and helped mentor youth comic-makers on Trinity City Comics.Judith Malina – The Living TheatreCo-founder of the Living Theatre, referenced for her writing on the artist's role during periods of counter-revolution.Octavia E. Time to sit back and relax (to the best of your ability) because we're starting with the gnarliest knots this nation has failed to address, welcome to Schauer Thoughts. Additionally: I do really apologize for this week's sort of choppy presentation, there's a Vyvanse shortage and my brain was truly struggling to organize thoughts. Welcome to the wonderful, winding world of Schauer Thoughts! This week we're meandering through new research from MIT on the rest and digest system, as well as making a sharp turn into “womb envy.” Is the rest and digest system related to womb envy? Not really. I mean, potentially? There is definitely a glandular route through the endocrine system, but I'm not taking that road today! Today I'm just covering two separate topics because I wanted to! Huzzah. Tear. Pour. Live More. Go to https://LIQUIDIV.com and get 20% off your first order with code SCHAUER at checkout. “Wait, so what are today's separate topics?” Rest & digest and then “womb envy.” Thank you again for joining me in the communal Schauer! There's a joke to be made about “womb envy” and a “baby Schauer” - please let me know if you come up with anything solid! Enjoy the episode.  Nuance for why I “don't want to get philosophical,” spoiler! It's not because I don't like philosophy, it's because we're going to get into “zero-sum” thinking and game theory and this is where people are going to argue about what economic systems are the “best” and people feel *compelled* to play devil's advocate.  Resources:  Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst - Robert M. Best of 2025: Emotional Intelligence Still Matters in the Age of AI with Caroline Stokes As we close out a strong year for The Leadership Habit Podcast, we are revisiting three of the most impactful conversations from 2025. These episodes challenged conventional thinking, encouraged deeper reflection, and offered leaders practical insight for navigating change. Our Best of 2025 series brings these standout conversations back as we look ahead to new voices and ideas in 2026. The second episode in this series features leadership strategist and author Caroline Stokes. In Emotional Intelligence Still Matters in the Age of AI, Caroline explores the mindset shifts leaders must make to remain effective in a world shaped by artificial intelligence, climate disruption, and societal change. This conversation challenges outdated leadership models that prioritize speed and scale over emotional awareness. Caroline explains why emotional intelligence, radical listening, and trauma-aware leadership are not optional skills but core capabilities for leading in a polycrisis era. As technology reshapes work, leaders must focus just as much on how people experience change as on the change itself. Revisiting this episode is a timely reminder that the most future-ready leaders are those who combine adaptability with empathy and clarity. Rather than resisting uncertainty, Caroline encourages leaders to meet it with curiosity, courage, and a willingness to rethink how leadership systems are designed. We look forward to sharing more conversations with innovative and forward-thinking leaders in 2026. Until then, this episode remains one of the most important discussions of the year for leaders preparing for what comes next. Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal

Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world, and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week we start a new end of year tradition as we celebrate 40 years of 1984 movies with “Our Best, Year of Movies Draft”.  That's right. 1984 is maybe the most consequential year in movie mania history as it's the beginning of the GenX blockbuster era . The Terminator, The Karate Kid, SixteenCandles, Ghostbusters (heck, even Indiana Jones makes an appearance), are but a few of the 1984 monster hits that informed what Hollywood would become for 40 years! But because we couldn't possibly talk about all them, we decided on an fantasy league style draft where our hostfull panel will draft their “Starting Five” best movies of 1984. Hard choices will have to be made but there are no winners or losers, just lively conversation and good cheer! Join Grim Shea, Marke., Johnny Heck and Retro Cool Nerd's Jimmy “The Gent” Leszcynski as they dig deep into the nostalgia well to draft their best 1984 movies.

Today, we are speaking with the one and only Robert Sapolsky, a Stanford neurobiologist, a MacArthur "Genius", and best-selling author of books exploring the nature of stress, social behavior, and — as he puts it — "the biology of the human predicament." In his latest book, Determined, Sapolsky assertively lays out his vision of a world without free will — a world where as much as we feel like we're making decisions, the reality is that our choices are completely determined by biological and environmental factors outside of our control. Before we get into it, it's worth saying that where this is heading, the reason to care about this question is that Sapolsky's argument has profound moral implications for our understanding of justice, personal responsibility, and whether any of us deserve to be judged or praised for our actions.Mentioned on the ShowDetermined: A Science of Life Without Free Will (Sapolsky, 2023)Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst (Sapolsky, 2018 )A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons (Sapolsky, 2002)Free Agents: How Evolution Gave Us Free Will (Mitchell, 2023) Sapolsky / Mitchell Debates – Part 1 (2023), Part 2 (2024)Related EpisodesIs addiction a disease? | Keith HumphreysBrain stimulation & "psychiatry 3.0" | Nolan WilliamsHow we understand each other | Laura GwilliamsGet in touchWe're doing some listener research and we want to hear from your neurons! Most of us take free will for granted — from the biggest of life decisions to choosing an ice cream flavor, we are generally capable of freely deciding how to think and how to behave without outside influence. But Robert Sapolsky believes our decisions cannot be disentangled from our genetics, environment, and neurobiology. In other words, to him, free will does not exist. Dr. Sapolsky, a neuroscientist and primatologist at Stanford University, is a leading thinker on the biology of stress, human behavior, neurodegenerative diseases, and the science of free will and determinism. He is the author of multiple bestselling books, including Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers (1994), Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst (2017), and Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will (2023). His works have been featured widely in the popular press, from National Geographic to The New York Times. Over the course of our conversation, Dr. Sapolsky presents his arguments against free will, along the way making detours through chaos and complexity theory, philosophy, ethics, and neuroscience. He shows how subtracting free will from the way culture thinks about crime, mental health, and human development have resulted in more humane health, justice, and educational systems. Finally, we contemplate together what human flourishing even means in the context of a life without free will. His ideas have profound implications not just on our society, but also on our understanding of human nature, challenging our perceptions and provoking deep reflection on how we navigate the choices in our lives. In this episode, you'll hear about: 3:08 - How Dr. Sapolsky chose a career straddling both neuroscience and primatology5:04 - The moment when Dr. Sapolsky realized he did not believe humans have free will16:16 - How society becomes more humane when free will is factored out23:29 - The deep implications that free will and determinism could have on criminology 34:13 - How a belief in a lack of free will can negatively affect motivation on a societal scale43:11 - What does human flourishing look like in a world without free will? 48:07 - The best moments in life in which to utilize this understanding of free will Dr. Robert Sapolsky has authored numerous publications, a full bibliography of his works can be found here. Dr. Robert Sapolsky can be found on Instagram at @robert.sapolskyWorks and past episodes discussed:What's Expected of Us by Ted Chiang Episode 79: Transcendence in the Age of Science | Alan Lightman, PhDVisit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Copyright The Doctor's Art Podcast 2024
