In the summer of 1958, the occupant of Room 622 in the Strand Palace Hotel was Bernard Smith; a kind and decent man who was quiet and respectable. Running a successful furniture business in New York, he doted on his two sisters, his niece and he would do anything for them, and likewise for him. With his health declining, having discussed his retirement with his sisters, Bernard had sold up, left America and moved to the UK to be nearer his family – it is what families do, they support one another. At 12:15pm on Tuesday 3rd June 1958, Lila Gilman (Bernard's sister) was in Room 622 helping him with a simple task. Last seen entering his room, moments later, he would brutally beat his sister to death.Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. Dr Andrew Yip presented on 16 August 2018 'Immersive interactions: a new museology of consciousness in the age of virtual reality' This talk addresses the human and social potentials of immersive, interactive media installations to connect museum visitors to each other and to an expanded experience of cultural histories. Rather than focus on particular hardware types, or the novelty and marketability of in-vogue digital platforms, this lecture argues that immersive media platforms should be characterised by the paradigms of experience and emotion that they allow, rather than be pigeonholed museologically by their medium simply as ‘the digital’. How does this new museology of the virtual fit in with the mission of museums to collect and preserve material artefacts? Through recent case studies and audience research, I argue that new forms of immersive media are a natural fit for cultural heritage institutions, that allow them to speak to new audiences in their native languages, across time and place. Dr Andrew Yip is a research fellow and resident 3D artist at the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research, University of New South Wales, where his research focuses on applications for experimental visualisation and embodied interaction platforms for the GLAM sector and cultural heritage studies. Andrew creates virtual reality installations for museums and artists. His virtual reality exhibition Henry VR is currently on show at the Art Gallery of NSW, and his Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly Unmasked: Virtual Reality 2017 won the 2018 Museums and Galleries Australia National Award for interpretation, learning and audience engagement. Andrew publishes widely in contemporary art and Australian art history. He was co-editor of the book The Legacies of Bernard Smith: essays on Australian art, history and cultural politics, which won the 2017 Art Association of Australia and New Zealand Book Prize for Best Compilation. Andrew holds a first class honours and PhD in art history from Sydney University and prior to joining UNSW held positions at the Art Gallery of NSW and Sydney University. Between 1440 and 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. But, history shows that printing has been around long before Gutenberg's invention. As early as 220, the Chinese were block printing, putting ink on wooden blocks and pressing them on cloth and then hundreds of years later, on paper. Before the press was invented, Europeans either painstakingly copied written word by hand or used a method similar to the Chinese block printing called Xylography. Both were laborious and time consuming, and because of this, book choices were limited and costly. But, it was Gutenberg who facilitated books being mass produced throughout Europe at a fraction of the cost. So, it's with thanks to Gutenberg that we have so many books available to us to learn or to immerse ourselves in for pleasure. Authors can take us on adventures, to the places they have been, describing the sights, sounds and smells in such vivid detail that we feel we are there, experiencing it for ourselves. We also read inspirational books that teach us to appreciate life, to feel good and get the most out of it we can. And books that teach us about things, show us how-to or teach us some much needed skills. For going on to 2000 years, humans have been reading the written word. We are so fortunate to have books easily available to us, to keep a book on the shelf to read over and over again or to refer to when we need to know something. There's something special about holding a book in your hand and turning the page. Or, the next best thing, for those of us limited in space, or travelling, or just trying to keep costs down, are downloadable eBooks. Or if you are tight for time, you can listen to someone read a book on CD or download it to hear it. And, of course, since motorcycles are our passion and yours, we have been lucky to have some fantastic authors on our show and have compiled a list of some of these authors. But, there are many, many authors out there who we haven't had on the show, who have written valuable, informative or just plain entertaining books. Peruse your local book store, or check out some authors websites. Pick a book, or two, and put up your feet and take a trip to South America, India, Africa, Europe or wherever your heart desires, plan a motorcycle adventure, or learn a thing or two about riding or repairs. Against all OddsBernard Smith was told it was too dangerous to take a blind woman around the world. But, with Bernard as her pilot, Cathy Birchall was the first blind woman to circle the world by motorcycle. They rode their old BMW motorcycle, covering 25,000 miles, experiencing many breakdowns and along the way discovering the kindness and generosity of strangers. This is truly an inspirational story of love, humanity and survival against the odds. National Gallery of Australia | Audio Tour | Turner to Monet: the triumph of landscape
The scene is idyllic; abundant cabbage-tree palms sway on the beach as sea fowls soar above Pellew’s Group of Islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria. In December 1802 the Investigator, under the command of Captain Matthew Flinders, sailed into the Gulf, continuing its arduous circumnavigation of Australia. Aboard the sloop was the young artist William Westall, who produced a wide range of sketches during his Australian voyage. Upon his return to England the Admiralty commissioned nine oil paintings of New Holland, including View of Sir Edward Pellew’s Group, Gulph of Carpentaria 1802. Art historians such as Bernard Smith have recognised that this is an innovative and remarkable painting.1 It is notable both for its heightened sense of light and the well-defined horizontal lines, delicately intersected by palms. In standard Picturesque paintings the foreground is dark and brooding, receding to a light background, usually with one tall feature, such as a tree or a mountain, placed at the side to frame the composition. By placing the palms in the centre of a sun-drenched vista, Westall negates this customary sense of recession and avoids neatly enclosing the scene; instead it is left open, clear and light. Painted nearly a decade after he was in the Gulf, Westall has made significant alterations to the original pencil sketch.2Most obvious is the addition of the mia-mia, a small shelter under which are housed rangga, sacred objects. In his account of the voyage, Flinders mentions ‘a small monument’ made up of ‘two cylindrical pieces of stone’, as well as nutmeg ‘growing upon a large spreading bush’ and ‘a pretty kind of duck’, all incorporated into Westall’s work.3 For the artist, the ‘monument’ and other additions are useful because they give the painting that variety and interest demanded of Picturesque landscapes. Westall was clearly aware of Picturesque formulas when he made the changes to his original rough sketches. While in Australia scientific accuracy was Westall’s priority, in London the paintings were intended to win him artistic acclaim. According to theorists such as William Gilpin, the Picturesque should stimulate the imagination to reverie or admiration, and must include a variety of elements. Westall believed the real Australia contained none of these fundamentals: he was scathing in his description of the ‘barren’ coastline, writing that his New Holland subjects could neither ‘afford pleasure from exhibiting the face of a beautiful country, nor curiosity from their singularity’.4 It was therefore incumbent upon him to use his artistic skills to compensate for the dull landscape by making improvements and adjustments. View of Sir Edward Pellew’s Group, Gulph of Carpentaria 1802 is an intriguing work. Westall has conformed to the Picturesque, adding the obligatory variety and interest, while also demonstrating how a new aesthetic can evolve in a new land.
