What happens when a planned TV series transforms into a blockbuster sequel? We chatted with Bianca, mother of a devoted young Moana fan, to uncover the excitement and challenges surrounding "Moana 2." This sequel, which rapidly transitioned into a high-grossing film, has stirred mixed feelings among fans who find it lacks the depth of its predecessor. Bianca shares her family's theater experience, highlighting her daughter's enthusiasm and growing exhaustion with the franchise. We also look at this year's other animated hits like "Inside Out 2" and "The Wild Robot," painting a picture of the current animated landscape.Embark on a journey across Oceania with Moana as she answers an ancestral call, all while navigating new familial dynamics. The absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical touch is felt, leaving the new soundtrack in the shadows of the original. We explore intriguing narrative choices, from Moana potentially playing a motherly role to her interactions with an adorable new sibling. Along the way, we fondly revisit the 2003 classic "Brother Bear," reflecting on its spiritual themes and underexplored place in Disney's legacy. The comparisons and contrasts between the two films offer a nostalgic yet critical lens on animated storytelling. As we think about Moana's future adventures, we ponder whether her story might evolve better as a TV series, allowing for deeper exploration of different cultures and islands. The conversation touches on character development, humor, and the potential of Moana's powers. Meanwhile, we can't help but celebrate the comedic relief provided by characters like Pua and nod to the humor found in cultural references. Finally, get ready for our festive Christmas episode, brimming with surprises and holiday cheer, guaranteed to bring joy to our listeners. Merry Christmas to Glenn and to all our loyal followers!https://msha.ke/thisseatstaken

The trail through the Wilderness Years continues into the American wilds, as film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers discover the true meaning of brotherhood – and bears – in 2003's Brother Bear. Along the way, they discuss a lesser batch of Phil Collins songs; unpick the odd morality at play in the film's depiction of nature; and discover what happens when brothers become bears, bears kill brothers, bears become brothers, brothers kill bears, and every other possible combination of that you could possibly imagine. Plus, there's much talk of those ‘hilarious' moose, Sam gets into the deeply unsavoury questions of animal attraction posed by Brother Bear 2, and we wave goodbye to the straight-to-DVD era. Next up: Bonus special on the straight-to-DVD sequels. Then, Home On The Range! In this conversation we dive deeper into the theme of Radical Responsibility, Family, How to be grateful in the in-between moments, how to ReTrain your negative, or rather, confused self-talk, and embracing Fierce Love as a Code. Also, there's some deep wisdom on how to handle and deal with what some of us consider to be totally unacceptable, in this case, severe suppression of women. Episode SummaryWelcome to our family time! Erin and Rachel discuss Brother Bear (2003), another entry in the canon of Disney's flop era. Despite disappointingly little effort on the part of the filmmakers to ensure cultural authenticity, Brother Bear manages to tell a sweet story with surprisingly little offensive content. Composer David Metzger sits down for a brand new Film.Music.Media conversation! Dave is an industry legend who has built an incredible body of work as a composer, orchestrator and arranger. Besides his incredible body of work as a composer, he's also been composers' and songwriters' secret weapon when it comes to orchestration and arranging. Composers like Mark Mancina, John Powell and Henry Jackman have relied on Dave's skills to bring their music to life. We dive into Dave's gorgeous score to Disney's Wish, and how he approached scoring his first feature since Brother Bear 2. Learn how Dave got hired on the project, and how he approached bringing the world of Wish to life. Dave also shares his path to becoming a composer, and how the biggest breaks in his career came when he was ready to give up hope. We talk about his big break working on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, how he formed a lasting creative relationship with Mark Mancina to become an essential part of his team, and much more! Brad and Jake tackle, but Brad hasn't seen any movies from 1943, so he recommends the acclaimed The Life & Times of Colonel Blimp. This unconventional epic spanning the Second Boer War and both World Wars was helmed by the Archers (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger), and starred Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, and Deborah Kerr in knockout performances. Jake, with little in his 1943 arsenal, asked Brad to watch Disney's Saludos Amigos. But since it's more of a tourism ad than it is a movie, Brad took the opportunity to rank all 61 Disney Animated Features released at the time of this recording, from Snow White to Strange World. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Bambi (1942), The Three Caballeros (1944), Make Mine Music (1946), Fun and Fancy Free (1947), Melody Time (1948), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), The Sword in the Stone (1963), The Jungle Book (1967), The Aristocats (1970), Robin Hood (1973), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), The Rescuers (1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Secret of NIMH (1982), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Rock-a-doodle (1991), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), Tarzan (1999), Fantasia 2000 (1999), Dinosaur (2000), The Emperor's New Groove (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Lilo & Stitch (2002), Treasure Planet (2002), Brother Bear (2003),Home on the Range (2004), Chicken Little (2005), Meet the Robinsons (2007), Bolt (2008), The Princess and the Frog (2009), Tangled (2010), Winnie the Pooh (2011), Wreck it Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), Big Hero Six (2014), Zootopia (2016), Moana (2016), Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), Frozen II (2019), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Encanto (2021), Strange World (2022)
