Beth is a traveler first and foremost. With 35 years of travel experience, each year she spends three to four months abroad, combining her love of adventure with vacation and business. For 15 years she has been running WanderTours, focusing on women-only tours, where she encourages and inspires women to dive deep into cultures and to challenge themselves by getting out of their comfort zone. She recently discovered running and, at age 50, ran her first marathon. She then discovered ultra-running and has been using these as an excuse to explore remote destinations around the globe that few people ever see. Most recently she completed the Grand Slam Plus with Racing the Planet. This consisted of running five 250K stage races across four deserts: the Gobi in Mongolia, the Atacama in Chile, the Namib in Namibia, Antarctica and, the one non-desert race, a run across the country of Georgia. While many people have completed these races, she is part of a small group of competitors (only seven women!) who have completed them in a year's time (OK, slightly longer due to Covid). *** We first spoke with Beth - Feb 11th 2020 - Running her 1st Marathon at 50, completing the Snowman Trek in Bhutan. *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! I re-interview Beth after she was on the first season of the podcast. We became running buddies through the pandemic and really grew a amazing friendship. Beth hated running when she started when she was in her late 40's. When she questioned the internal barriers in her mind and asked herself, "What if I could run a marathon" her running life took off and took her around the world. Luckily for her, she's a world tour guide and owner of Wandertours. We share a similar passion about empowering woman through breaking down beliefs of what can be done. We also chat about friendships, how she started and what makes her level up to do incredible feats. She also shares when it's like to run in different parts of the world.
Beth in her own words…. I’ve traveled a lot and have had what many would consider some pretty adventurous trips. I’ve completed (twice) the 25-day, 220-mile Snowman Trek in Bhutan (one of the most difficult treks in the world), climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and reached the top at 19,341 feet, finished marathons in Hawaii, Tokyo, Portland and Seattle. I ran my first marathon at 50, ran five marathons that year (including two back-to-back marathons where one was an ultra at 31 miles), ran the Seattle Quadzilla (four marathons in four days) and have qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. I’m currently working on my next book, Be Bold: Discover Your Best Self Through Travel and Adventure. I’ve also written a guide For Women Traveling to India. In 2019, I ran the Epic5 Ultra (5 ultras in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands). In 2020, I am running the 4 Deserts which consists of running 155 miles over six days in four deserts–the Gobi, the Namib, the Atacama and Antarctica. Today's conversation is a bit unusual and hopefully you'll be as inspired as always. Today I’m the guest and Chris Fagan, whom you might recall from Episode 88 of the She's Bold Podcast, asks ME the questions. This is all about my Epic5 run in Hawaii! As a reminder, Chris and her husband walked 560 miles over 48 days to the South Pole, pulling sleds with all of their gear that weighed about 200 pounds. Yeah, super inspirational. If you’re new to the show, be sure to go back and listen to that episode. Chris suggested that we sit down and talk through my recent experience running Epic5. As an experienced ultra-runner herself, she had some great questions. We were able to talk through my preparation for running five 50Ks in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands, as well as the actual experience and then my recovery. You’ll also hear a question that was asked by Dana, one of my Patreon supporters. Getting to ask questions of guests is just one benefit you’ll get as a supporter of the show. For just $5 month you’ll also be added to our private Facebook group, and have access to bonus content that is usually in the form of a question that I ask the guest after we’ve finished recording the main part of the show. I hope you’re feeling generous right as I’d love have you more involved with She’s Bold community :-) Check out shesboldpodcast.com/patreon for details. Before I get to our conversation, I do want to give a huge shout out to the Epic5 race directors, Rebecca Morgan and Chris Brennan and our photographer, Colin Cross. These folks did an amazing job at supporting our small group of runners. I can’t thank them enough for making this event happen, given our small but mighty numbers. And thanks to Peter Jurt for running Epic5 for the 2nd year in a row. As I told him, given that he knew what he was about to get into, I was even more impressed that he showed up. The folks at Epic5 are best known for their triathlon races – where participants complete 5 triathlons in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands. And next year they are doing 10 triathlons in 10 days. So throughout my runs, I knew it would be nothing compared to what the participants in that event would be taking on. If you’re a runner and want to challenge yourself, I highly recommend the Epic5 run. It was truly a fantastic experience for me. And while there were just 3 of us running it this year, it’s limited to 12 so it’ll always be an intimate group of people that you’ll get to know well during the experience. You can see more about them at epic5.com. With that, please enjoy this conversation with me about Epic5! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Today’s conversation is a bit different for several reasons. First, a portion of this episode was initially featured on Beth Baker's podcast, Why We Run. I so enjoyed that conversation that I wanted to include the full-length version here. So in this episode, the tables are turned a bit and Beth Baker is asking ME the questions. But there’s something else that’s a bit different about this episode. It’s recorded while we are running. So you’re going to hear a lot of heavy breathing throughout our conversation. And you’re going to hear ambient noise and us talking about the bunnies and other things going on around us. I wanted to keep that in because that’s what happens when you’re running. You notice things. Beth and I talk about a lot of different things here and there are a ton of links in the show notes with more information. I think there are more links than I’ve ever had to add before. But I think that’ll make for a very informative and interesting listen. Also, not too long after we recorded this I had Beth on the She’s Bold Podcast, that was episode #103 so you can go back and listen to our conversation (not while we were running) so you can learn more about Beth Baker. With that, let’s get right to this conversation with me and Beth Baker. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? I am so excited to share these 3 stories of the woman who started a little later their life and are doing amazing things. I call them the Late Bloomer Running Club. First up is Deb, who started to run at the age of 59, after she lost 90 pounds. She got hooked and has done 204 races from everywhere between a 1k to a 100 miler. She talks about the things she has learned along the way, and she isn't even close to slowing down. She race card is booked into 2020. Next up is Tonia, who JUST started running in February at the age of 53 because of a new years resolution where she wanted to say yes to anything that would lower her stress level. It turns out, Tonia is a total speed demon and did an 8-minute mile on her 5k!The last interview is Beth Whitman who started questioning the stories she was telling herself in her 50's and led her to question if she could really run a marathon, and then another, and then an ultra and so on. She is on fire with her goal motivation and has paired her new running passion with her travel background/career. This year she is doing 5 ultras on 5 different Hawaiin islands, and next year, she is running races in the big 4 deserts around the world. Whoa. She also has a great podcast called She's Bold!

Beth Whitman is a contemporary wanderer with nearly 30 years of mostly solo travel. She has made a name for herself as a women’s travel expert and is committed to encouraging women to travel more and expand their beliefs in what they are capable of. She talks about her favorite moments in adventure and the best places she has visited, her mission to give back and support women, and why she is such an advocate for solo travel. Join Lisa at the Womenspeak International Festival in Sedona May 17-19 Super Power U Facebook Page She’s Bold Podcast Interview with Lisa on She's Bold Highlights: So much of the work Beth does now is giving back to other women to see the world and flourish. She saw opportunities that her mother didn’t have, and wants to create possibility in others. Beth started challenging herself with solo travel and combined her love of riding a motorcycle with travel to show women it is possible to do that type of trip. One of Beth’s favorite things about international travel is the connection it creates between her and the people providing help and guidance. A few of Beth’s favorite countries are Bhutan, Papa New Guinea, and Australia. Travel provides an experience where we are stripped from our everyday life, and it opens us to be so much more in tune with the world around us. Beth did P90X to get in shape for her SnowMan Trek, which led her to train for a marathon. She is always busting limiting beliefs about her capabilities and stretching her own personal limitations. You can be both adventurous and safe at the same time. It is important when traveling to be respectful to the people living in the community, and boldness doesn’t have to mean fearless. Quotes: “Being able to travel and get out my home life was the key.” “When your desire is greater than your fear, that is the switch.” “I like to challenge myself and the idea of not doing something is crazier to me than actually doing it.” “The world is a wonderful, amazing place.” Life Lessons: Never say never. Be aware of the stories you tell yourself and the words you speak. Mentioned in This Episode: WanderTours Wanderlust and Lipstick P90X

When she realized that not all women have the confidence or know-how to travel independently, Beth wrote "Wanderlust and Lipstick: The Essential Guide for Women Traveling Solo" and, later, "Wanderlust and Lipstick: For Women Traveling to India". Through her company, WanderTours, Beth regularly leads trips to India, Papua New Guinea, Bhutan, Vietnam and Cambodia, Burma, Thailand and Laos, Bali and Java, Tanzania and Ireland. She also leads culinary tours through New Orleans, Santa Fe and her hometown, Seattle. Beth speaks regularly at events throughout the world, as well—all with the goal of inspiring would-be travelers into action to live a life that helps them become better versions of themselves. Beth Whitman is a true example of a woman who went for it, having completed the 25-day, 220-mile Snowman Trek in Bhutan—one of the most difficult treks in the world—not once, but twice. She has driven the AlCan Highway to Alaska twice, as well. She has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and reached the top at 19,341 feet. After telling herself she wasn't a runner, she ran her first marathon at age 50, completed five marathons that year, and then went on to run four back-to-back marathons over Thanksgiving weekend. That’s four marathons in four days in what's known as the Seattle Quadzilla. And last, but certainly not least, she has ridden a motorcycle solo from Seattle to Panama. Beth Whitman is just an awesome human doing awesome things! She’s a traveler, blogger, podcaster, and 95% vegan. Beth has made a name for herself as the women’s travel expert, having done several solo trips by herself, despite protests from her friends and family. On one adventure, Beth took a solo trip on a motorbike sponsored by BMW, and traveled from Seattle to Panama. On the show, Beth describes what her experience was like, and some of the weird, and kooky, fears she had while undertaking such a transformative trip! Key Takeaways: *How did Beth get started with solo travel? *We have hostels all over the U.S., but we rarely ever talk about them! *Technology has only made solo travel easier. Beth was doing this ‘blind,’ over 20 years ago! *How does Beth balance the technology aspect while she’s traveling? She has a blog and a podcast, so does she ever disconnect? *Beth rode a motorbike from Seattle to Panama — 7,000 miles over 9 weeks! *Beth discusses some of her biggest takeaways while riding solo on a motorbike. *How did Beth’s friends and family react to the news that she’s gonna be traveling solo? *What kind of fears did Beth have while she was doing this solo bike trip? *Beth doesn’t see herself as a ‘woman.’ She sees herself as a person doing adventurous things. *Why do some women lack the confidence to travel solo? *If we keep telling ourselves we can’t, then we can’t. *Put your money in a travel fund. Travelling really can be very inexpensive. *Where’s Beth’s favorite place to go? *Beth is now hosting adventures. What kinds of people go on some of her adventures? *What’s one piece of advice Beth would give to those who want to travel solo?
