In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Tate Dobson, known on trail as Pyro. Tate is a certified wildcard. It's not just that he's hiked the PCT, AT, Long Trail, and Te Araroa, but how he's done it, including hiking the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail spending $1,000 (alongside Quadzilla), hiking long stretches with carrying a Jansport pack, another stretch using tote bag, hiking the R2R2R eating only Motts Fruit snacks and the 100-Mile Wilderness consuming only maple syrup and a jar of peanut butter. He's run a pair of ultramarathons around a roundabout, he's run a beer mile with his mom, and has accomplished another mile consuming four shots of tequila and a tube of toothpaste. In other words, strap in.  We wrap the show with some bucket list hikes you can do over a long weekend, the triple crown of stuipd word spellings, a listener poop story, and more. We learn all about Jolly's entry into backpacking, including his first thru-hike at just 18 years old alongside his dad, hiking 300 miles of the PCT on a broken ankle, and some hilariously embarrassing Jabba stories from their recent hike on the CDT. We, of course, dive deep into his apparel company, Jolly Gear, and how he's flipped the thru-hiking fashion world on its head with his unique sun hoodie button-downs. We chat about the biggest challenges associated with running an apparel business, how a misunderstanding lead to his early signature design, how he manages the business while backpacking, his process for sourcing new designs, and much more. We close the show with the triple crown of cringeworthy things, a discussion of what should be free but isn't, an impromptu drop-in from Jabba, and an AT conditions update courtesy of Quadzilla. Today – My guest Jayden Lombardo just returned from completing the most famous, and some say most daunting marathon: the Boston Marathon, 26.2 grueling miles through the streets of Boston, culminating at Heartbreak Hill! He joined 30,000 other runners and finished just before the rain came down in buckets. I pity those who finished later. We learn why the Unicorn is the official symbol of the Boston Marathon, why I call him Quadzilla or the Quadfather, and how he managed to spend an entire week apart from his girlfriend Schmoopy. He enjoyed his first trip to Boston and saw the sites including learning about the Salem Which Trials, the kings church and fun facts about the Rhode Island state capital. We sample and rate another Whisky and I recall a good chunk of the famous poem “Paul Revere's Ride” from elementary school – not bad for an old man!

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined once again by Quadzilla.  We of course go deep on his calendar year triple crown from last year, getting a play-by-play of his standout highlights, lowlights, and everything in between from his epic 8,000-mile adventure. Much like Quadzilla's first appearance, this one is full of sage advice for on trail and off, including how he handles isolationism, dealing with the doldrums, and the importance of staying present.  This one of course does not disappoint. We wrap the show with the Triple Crown of previously held backpacking convictions you've changed your mind on, some news on Mt Washington's recent -108 degree day, and a new stupid thing of the week.   Gossamer Gear: Use code “BACKPACKERRADIO” for 15% off at gossamergear.com.  Organifi: Use code “BACKPACKER” for 20% off at organifi.com/backpacker. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Carl Stanfield aka "Professor". Professor is in the midst of attempting to hike the most known miles over the course of a single calendar year, including a calendar year triple crown. We of course dive deep into his journey including his Florida Trail hike in January, hiking through frigid temps on the AT, yet- how he's gotten incredibly lucky with weather throughout his trek at large, we learn how he's managed to prioritize the overall experience above making miles, the number of free beers he's accumulated over his many miles, and much more. And, because Professor is a major gear nerd, we dissect his pack, his apparel, and what changes he's made throughout the course of his journey. It was a ton of fun to have Carl in studio for this show, we hope you enjoy the chat as much as we did. We wrap the show with a triple crown of non R-rated insults, Chaunce has her mind exploded about the proper way to use coffee ice cubes, and we get yet another update from our intrepid adventurer MG. Robbie is a plant-based ultra-endurance athlete, with achievements including a run across the United States and a feat he dubbed the Colorado Crush which involves hiking the 485-mile Colorado Trail, summiting all 58 of Colorado's 14,000-ft peaks, and running the Leadville Trail Series- the marathon, the-50 mile race, and the 100-mile race...all of this in the span of 63 days! We of course go in-depth about these endurance undertakings, including how he manages his diet, his recovery, the highlights and lowlights from these adventures, the role his crew plays, and much more.

Hi, this is Coach Sarah! Before we begin, you’ll note that several of the questions tonight are about Fitness Protection’s Slow Burn strength program for runners, which begins on January 6th, 2020. By the time this episode drops in our podcast feed, the January session of Slow Burn will be closed for registration. But don’t worry, we will be offering it again in February and at least twice more later in the year, and we will be opening registration for those sessions in early 2020. Final note, we are still offering coupons for Slow Burn through our Holiday Strength challenge program - they can be applied to any 2020 session of Slow Burn and they will be the ONLY coupons we offer on this terrific program. All you have to do is donate between $20 and $45 to Play University, which serves kids in the Milwaukee area facing transportation scarcity, or The Blue Bench, which provides support to sexual assault survivors in the Denver area. You can also split your donations between the two charities. Email your receipts to info@fitnessprotection.com and we’ll follow up with your coupon code. We hope to have you join us to get strong AF in Slow Burn next year! On that note, congratulations to the WINNERS of the Quadzilla challenge! Every single one of you gets a prize from us, so watch your e-mail for details! Runner, Interrupted Another quiet week for our #RunnersInterrupted (we GET it) but we want to send a LOT of love to Mary Lenczewski, who is undergoing major abdominal surgery this week and deserves ALL the love and support! ReBuild (8:00) So my blood pressure has suddenly gotten into the high end of the hypertensive range (when it was normal at a doc visit in October). What do I need to know about running with high blood pressure? I thought I had more time before family history kicked in, and I’m still hoping it’s something acute and fixable. So far they’ve cleared me for normal work and activity as well as a low dose BP med. Hi coaches, the hip hinge blog post was super helpful thank you (https://www.coachedandloved.com/post/the-rebuild-opportunity). Is there a video you can point me to so I can see it? (YES, Coach MK demonstrated it for ReBuild back in June! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQaTpB3pseg&=&t=5s) Maintain (12:30) Shoutout to Sara Seeburg and Becky Horn, who ran the Scottsdale Half Marathon and both had amazing races! I have big plans for 3DATF in May. I am signed up for the 48hr event, hoping to do more than 100 miles. I signed up for Slow Burn early for the discount but had planned to wait (I did Beta in Sept/Oct). I heard MK recommend that we do Slow Burn in January if we are planning big things for 3DATF. Should I go ahead and mentally prepare myself for Slow Burn in January? Thanks!!! What equipment/gear will be mandatory for Slow Burn vs nice to have? Another Slow Burn question: what should we plan to do Jan 1-5? Follow the Maintain January plan until Slow Burn starts?

How we grew up believing what body beautiful was, well everything we learned was not true! What the magazines said, the look everyone was going for seem to be really hard to obtain. And, if you couldn’t obtain it that left most of us feeling not worthy. It’s only been in recent times that having a full figure or muscles was more of the attractive look. So now lifting weights seem to be what everybody was gravitating towards trying to achieve these body image goals. Something that Carina and I have in common (I know many others too) that we thought lifting weights would get us to these imaginary goals. But we then found out that there was more to it than just the way we looked. We have to understand that everybody is built so differently what works for one person may not work for the next. In Carina‘s case she was never a small framed female. In her head to get smaller was to start by lifting weights. Then she found that weights that were heavy for most were actually very light for her. At this point something clicked for her and seem to be very attracted to powerlifting. What she did notice was that there wasn’t very many female powerlifters at that time. But also at that time the Internet was not fully blown with all the access of information that we currently have. It was very limited! Because of her body image insecurities this was something that she only ever dreamed of and did not have enough confidence to persevere. After a near death experience with meningitis she then realized we only have one life to live so let’s just live it to our fullest potential. And that is when her journey began. Her first meet she was able to reach 1000 pounds as a total score. *for those who are unsure what that means it the total scores of lbs bench, back squat and deadlift. The potential after that was endless and it hasn’t stopped yet! Carina’s most favourite achievement is having the world record bench at 341 pounds. She’s hoping to beat this in August at another sanctioned Invite only event. How do you raise kids in the gym? You just bring them. In powerlifting and CrossFit gyms where there’s an open floor concept you could have full eye range on your children given that they are behaving themselves LOL The great part about this is it desensitizes them on how intimidating a gym could be and they get to watch their greatest hero of all time crush it. Her little guy is now a huge part of their culture and powerlifting family. As young as he is, everyone helps out when Carina is working towards stepping on the podium. Carina’s biggest message in this episode and in all of her programming she does for her clients is not just show up but she is a huge advocate of learning to love ourselves. This is an experience that majority of us have to learn because of our culture from the past and sometimes the present on what beautiful is. What it really is, is that YOU are beautiful regardless. And we need to find ways to believe that. It is easier said than done and it takes a little work but that’s OK. That’s just going to be part of the journey of achieving something amazing. When we love ourselves everything is limitless and we don’t care what other people say because we know it doesn’t matter. Speaking more on the negative terms. Now that I have made you think she is a friggin GOD lol please welcome my favourite female power lifter Quadzilla aka Carina ❤️ @quadzilla @boxtalkpodcast @tiff_fit_biff Love you all ❤️

Ladies, join our Be Bold Facebook group! "You fail your way to success and what is success, it’s relative, right?" - Sabrina Seher I met Sabrina Seher when I was running the Seattle Quadzilla last fall. Sabrina was also running the Quadzilla. But Sabrina, as you’ll hear in our conversation, really stood out for me. She was saying hello to a lot of people on the course, she was having fun, she was jumping around. She was basically doing everything you don’t do if you want to conserve your energy in order to run 26.2 miles. But we chatted during one of the races and then became Facebook friends. Naturally I started seeing her posts and noticed that it seemed like she is always running a race. And, news flash, she is. She has given me new perspective on what it means to be a runner/marathoner. The typical thinking is that you need 16 weeks of training to prepare for a marathon. And yeah, that is technically true, particularly for first time marathoners or someone looking for a personal record or a Boston Qualifying time. But if enjoy running, especially long distances, then why not run a Quadzilla or run 52 marathons in a year like Sabrina did a couple of years ago? By the first week of April, she had already run in this calendar year five marathons, a 50K and two 100-milers. So, yeah. She’s out there running a lot. In addition to all these marathons, Sabrina owns Super Studio 253 in Tacoma, Washington. The studio offers all sorts of classes as well as training for runners. She also is the race director for the Cascade Super Series marathons and half marathons and manages a group of pacers. At first you might think that Sabrina is all about Super Sabrina. But she’s not. She’s about a Super You! Her motto is Find Your Super. And she really means it. She wants people to be their better selves, to dig deep and discover what it is that can make them Super. And her energy output and desire to make YOU better is quite infectious. As you’ll hear in this conversation, she has not had a straight path to wellness and success. Her life has not been perfect. But she emerged from some dark places only to come bursting out so that she could set an example for her two children and so that she could be an inspiration to others. I observed and was the recipient of a little of that energy during the Seattle Quadzilla. But got a huge dose of it during our conversation and that energy is still with me. She’s the kind of person that you want to surround yourself with. And she kinda gives you faith that there are great people in the world, you just need to know where to look for them and be open. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Jack Jones flip-flopped the Appalachian Trail in 2016, sharing part of his time with two previous guests, Kelly Anderson and Edwin Thullen. He found the physicality of the trail to be relatively easy and, with his military training, he carried a very heavy pack. Here he is in Virginia, with the spectacular view from Dragon's Tooth behind him.  His journey to the trail came via adoption from China at age eight, and Jack speaks of the dislocation that caused him, yet the trail brought home to him the camaraderie with his fellow travelers. The picture below shows Jack with Kelly and their friend, Simba, on the way up Katahdin.   He learned a great deal about diet on the AT and is hoping to use that knowledge in his Arizona Trail and Continental Divide Trail hikes this year (2018). You can see a short video of Jack's journey on YouTube and read his AT blog at his new site, CouchToTrail.com. If you sign up for his newsletter, you'll get over 100 high quality, full resolution photos of the Appalachian Trail. The photo of Jack at the bottom of these notes is of him at Mt Washington. Update 2/19: Jack sent me a couple of other links: Instagram and Reddit. Just click on either. Doctor Lynne returns to the show as Hiker Lynne, with a local Connecticut hike, the Charles Ives Trail her focus. She has shared a great link to a brochure and map for the trail. Just click here. Here she is with her family on the trail. Bruce’s blog is now regularly updated.
