In 2012 we hiked in Bhutan and at that time we were trying to decide between two hikes. One of the choices we were looking at was the 350 km Snowman Trek which in the end we didn't end up doing. This trek is one of Bhutan's and for that matter, one of the world's, best known treks taking around 24 days to complete the whole hike. In today's episode we catch up with hiker Jonty Crane to find out more about his experience on the Snowman Trek. For me this is a bucket list hike and one that I was keen to find out more about! www.australianhiker.com.au   Australian Hiker can also be found on our various social media platforms Australian Hiker Facebook Australian Hiker Instagram Australian Hiker Twitter Australian Hiker Threads Australian Hiker Youtube

With them are Sports Therapist Carla Bickerstaffe and Massage Therapist Jenny Lane, both of whom have considerable experience of working with athletes with disabilities. While discussing the physically and mentally demanding trek, the guests share insights into the rigorous preparations, the role of sports therapy & sports massage, and the importance of self-care in their endeavor. The discussion also touches on the emotional hurdles faced, especially when unforeseen challenges forced Dickie to withdraw, underscoring the human aspect and the relentless spirit of perseverance. Rich and Dickie's journey is a testament to human resilience and teamwork, with valuable takeaways for anyone working with or aiming to better understand athletes with disabilities. With 35 years of travel experience, each year she spends three to four months abroad, combining her love of adventure with vacation and business.  For 15 years she has been running WanderTours, focusing on women-only tours, where she encourages and inspires women to dive deep into cultures and to challenge themselves by getting out of their comfort zone. She recently discovered running and, at age 50, ran her first marathon. She then discovered ultra-running and has been using these as an excuse to explore remote destinations around the globe that few people ever see. Most recently she completed the Grand Slam Plus with Racing the Planet. This consisted of running five 250K stage races across four deserts: the Gobi in Mongolia, the Atacama in Chile, the Namib in Namibia, Antarctica and, the one non-desert race, a run across the country of Georgia.  While many people have completed these races, she is part of a small group of competitors (only seven women!) who have completed them in a year's time (OK, slightly longer due to Covid). *** We first spoke with Beth - Feb 11th 2020 - Running her 1st Marathon at 50, completing the Snowman Trek in Bhutan.  ***  Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! I had the honour and pleasure to sit down and speak to photographer, Roberta Marroquin, about how she got into photography, travelling, and her secret of sustaining her long career. Coming from Monterrey, Mexico, we discussed what it was like growing up in Mexico. We discussed her education and why photography was such a passion for her from an early age. Roberta discussed going to university and studying in England and France, of all places, to learn her trade. Roberta talked to me about graduating and making it into the field by freelancing at the beginning to build up a portfolio and moving across to New York in 2008 to pursue a one-year certificate programme at the International Center of Photography. Ever since then, she has lived in the city and lived her dream. We also spoke about the key to sustaining a long career as a photographer and where she sees the industry as it is today and its future. We spoke about some of her travelling assignments as she has travelled to places like Syria, China, Bhutan, Kenya, and Japan. We talked about The Snowman Trek she did in Bhutan and how that was one of her most challenging and most satisfying moments in her travelling and photography career. Roberta and I discussed what she does outside of her work and travel. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my talk with Roberta, and I look forward to seeing what else she has to offer in the world of photography. Perhaps one day, we can be on an assignment taking photographs together. You can also watch the episode on my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/OCwGdrl2Wrk). Welcome to Episode 13 of the Wildcast This episode was recorded in May and I talk to Mary Anne Potts and Ben Clark from Ben's ancestral home in Tennessee. Mary Anne is of course the former editor of National Geographic Adventure and with a real wealth in experience covering adventure and outdoor stories over the last 20 years her insight into the adventure space and the changes that have happened in the last 20 years is seen from the eye of a journalist watching some of the best outdoor athletes and some of the biggest adventures the world has seen in the last 2 decades. Ben is a film maker and an accomplished outdoorsman he was the second youngest person to summit Everest many years ago and is now known for his trail running films like the Snowman Trek where they ran through 300 kilometers of Himalayan Mountains in Bhutan with Anna Frost and Timothy Olson, he also produces Run around the World a trail running series with Jason Schlarb and Meredith Edwards. They share with me their flight from New York and how they see outdoor and adventure evolving post pandemic and what we can all look forward to in the adventure space in the coming months and years. An incredibly insightful conversation with both of them who I can say each bring a different perspective to the experience of the outdoors -they are very much alike but also very unique in what they bring to the outdoor and adventure space and i truly enjoyed picking their brains in this fruitful conversation. Beth in her own words…. I’ve traveled a lot and have had what many would consider some pretty adventurous trips. I’ve completed (twice) the 25-day, 220-mile Snowman Trek in Bhutan (one of the most difficult treks in the world), climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and reached the top at 19,341 feet, finished marathons in Hawaii, Tokyo, Portland and Seattle. I ran my first marathon at 50, ran five marathons that year (including two back-to-back marathons where one was an ultra at 31 miles), ran the Seattle Quadzilla (four marathons in four days) and have qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. I’m currently working on my next book, Be Bold: Discover Your Best Self Through Travel and Adventure. I’ve also written a guide For Women Traveling to India. In 2019, I ran the Epic5 Ultra (5 ultras in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands).  In 2020, I am running the 4 Deserts which consists of running 155 miles over six days in four deserts–the Gobi, the Namib, the Atacama and Antarctica.  Show notes Where her love of travel came from Being inspired by the National Geographic  Growing up in New Jersey, USA Starting to travel while in college Travelling to India for her first big trip Wanting to move closer to Asia Bringing a unique perspective on female solo travel Being able to be alone for long periods of time Travelling in the 90s  Not having structure while travelling  Starting her website in 2006 Encouraging other women to travel solo Starting a tour company Having the opportunity to lead a tour to Bhutan Fears of travel Victim blaming  The kindness of strangers The places she goes back to over and over again Getting into running Staring running at 45/46 P90X Training for the Snowman trek in Bhutan The limiting stories we tell ourselves  Deciding to run her first marathon at 50! Super Power U: Mental Models and Tactical Skills To Activate Your Inner Superhero

Beth Whitman is a contemporary wanderer with nearly 30 years of mostly solo travel. She has made a name for herself as a women’s travel expert and is committed to encouraging women to travel more and expand their beliefs in what they are capable of. She talks about her favorite moments in adventure and the best places she has visited, her mission to give back and support women, and why she is such an advocate for solo travel. Join Lisa at the Womenspeak International Festival in Sedona May 17-19 Super Power U Facebook Page She’s Bold Podcast Interview with Lisa on She's Bold Highlights: So much of the work Beth does now is giving back to other women to see the world and flourish. She saw opportunities that her mother didn’t have, and wants to create possibility in others. Beth started challenging herself with solo travel and combined her love of riding a motorcycle with travel to show women it is possible to do that type of trip. One of Beth’s favorite things about international travel is the connection it creates between her and the people providing help and guidance. A few of Beth’s favorite countries are Bhutan, Papa New Guinea, and Australia. Travel provides an experience where we are stripped from our everyday life, and it opens us to be so much more in tune with the world around us. Beth did P90X to get in shape for her SnowMan Trek, which led her to train for a marathon. She is always busting limiting beliefs about her capabilities and stretching her own personal limitations. You can be both adventurous and safe at the same time. It is important when traveling to be respectful to the people living in the community, and boldness doesn’t have to mean fearless. Quotes: “Being able to travel and get out my home life was the key.” “When your desire is greater than your fear, that is the switch.” “I like to challenge myself and the idea of not doing something is crazier to me than actually doing it.” “The world is a wonderful, amazing place.” Life Lessons: Never say never. Be aware of the stories you tell yourself and the words you speak. Mentioned in This Episode: WanderTours Wanderlust and Lipstick P90X
