We dive into the widely heralded, earth-toned and Scorsese-helmed artifact of the mid-70s, The Last Waltz, with special guest Elicia McCoy. We discover extratexual tidbits, branch off into fractals of digression, share diverging and converging opinions alike, and generally have a hip and groovy time thinking about the Thankgiving Day 1976 vibes created by Marty's (yeah, we call him Marty, so what?) pioneering directorial efforts. The nature of art and commerce, uncanny links to Pulp Fiction, alternate timelines where John Hinckley Jr. pulls an assassination attempt on someone at the famed concert instead of upon Ronny Reagan, dueling guitars-qua-phalluses, the elusive nature of the guitar solo itself, the connection between touring and drug use, the special effects created to hide Neil Young's coke nostril, Thanksgiving dinner for 5,000 inebriated people, the grand unified meaning of the whole dang thang via ancient Heraclitean wisdom — it's all there, man. This episode's guest founded his own sub-genre "fit hop" in 2011 with his solo album The Workout. On Feb. 28 multi-platinum hip hop artist and producer Stic.man, one half of Dead Prez, releases his next project under the banner of his RBG Fit Club imprint - a short film called A Beautiful Run. Stic dropped the sequel to The Workout around a year ago, and with his new Muhammad Ali-inspired short film he continues to live out his mantra of "Let Nothing Stop You." The north Florida native's been active in hip hop since him and his partner M-1 delivered an absolute anthem called "It's Bigger Than Hip Hop", the smash record from Dead Prez' debut album Let's Get Free (Feb. 2000). The interview started out with that moment in the young career of Khnum Muata Ibomu (ne Clayton Gavin) before moving into: the duo's time at 90s upstart Loud Records Stic's founding of his company RBG Fit Club along with his wife - author and nutritionist Afya Ibomu Crafting the subject matter and sound of "fit hop" How Stic went from jogging for five minutes to becoming a certified running coach Ibomu's forthcoming short film on his second greatest love Being that Dead Prez is synonymous with "revolutionary", we also opened the interview with Stic's fascinating connection to the recently released major motion picture Judas and the Black Messiah. When he casually said "Akua Njeri", I realized I'd stumbled onto the perfect icebreaker. In the episode's monologue, I had to talk through my struggles with grasping the divisive issue "feminism" through the lens of Black Messiah's Deborah Johnson (Dominique Fishback), while revisiting some lyrics from Rapsody's 2019 album Eve. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/its-always-personal/support

“It’s bigger than hip hop” said Dead Prez on their chart-topping song “Hip Hop” off their debut album Let’s Get Free. Today that most certainly rings true. What the forefathers of hip hop envisioned what would become of this new emerging style in the late 70s in the Bronx, NY is a far cry of where hip hop lives and operates in today. Today hip hop has a heavy influence on mainstream pop culture and is heard all over the world on all platforms. MCs are no longer just in their respective neighborhoods, but are bi-coastal and influencing everything from clothing to movies and establishing their own brands. Tune in to this episode with your favorite 2 Cool Parents as they dive into the Netflix Documentary: Hip Hop Evolution that takes you on an award tour of the history of hip hop featuring interviews with heavy hitters like Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Ice T, Big Daddy Kane, Russell Simmons, LL Cool J, Too $hort, Bun B, KRS-One and more that shaped the way we grew up and ultimately how we listened to music. We talk about the importance of music, introducing our kids to the impact of hip hop culture, the icons of our generation and when we first fell in love with hip hop! I'm very proud to present this 60m old school Hip Hop/Rap/Breaks Mixtape. Mixed on VINYL, on some ancient turntables using a dusty old mixer & coconuts for headphones. I randomly found this mix on MINI DISC (Google it youngsters) when I was having a clear out. It was actually conceived & mixed by my little brother Mickey The Lips, over 10 YEARS AGO & is Part 2, so watch out for the next instalment (when we complete our archaeological dig!) We've not listened to this for 8 years but the mixes are tight, original & there are some slamming remixes/mash-ups on there. Mickey The Lips has long since retired but his legacy will live on when you listen to this. Trust me. If you're havin a party, BBQ, bath, shower, Jacuzzi, on your way to work, college, rob a bank – throw this on & THROW SOME SHAPES - MMMM DROP……… Incredible Bongo Band ‘Apache' Redman 'Lets Get Dirty' (Gorillaz Remix) Mekon Feat.
