POPULARITY
In the last Spotlight of the year, H at last catches up with two of the newest members of the Arts Council and another chat with fundraiser and book writer extraordinaire, Bill Booth.
From Theresa May, who struggled to connect with the public, to Boris Johnson, whose tenure was marred by scandals, to Liz Truss, who served as prime minister for just 45 days, the Conservative Party has had significant challenges with U.K. voters in recent years. With economic turmoil following Brexit, a pressing need for better health care, and concerns about job security, many British voters are seeking a fresh start. Tomorrow, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party will face voters in the first general election since 2019. Projections for Thursday's general election show the opposition Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, on the precipice of a parliamentary supermajority win. Today on “Post Reports,” host Martine Powers speaks with The Washington Post's London bureau chief Bill Booth about the decline of the Conservative Party and the contenders vying to be the next British prime minister. Today's show was produced by Sabby Robinson. It was edited by Lucy Perkins and mixed by Sean Carter. Thanks also to Trinity Webster-Bass and Ali Bianco. To learn more about the election, check out our colleague Ishaan Tharoor's column.Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

WOW! You have a man who has almost single handedly shaped modern skydiving into what we know and love today. I can't lie, at least a few times in this interview I'm literally gushing with gratitude, because let's face it, without the BOC throw out pilot chute, the three ring system, tandems... How many of us would have a vastly different life right now? A wealth of knowledge and a great and entertaining story teller, it is my great pleasure to present to you Mr. Bill Booth on Lunatic Fringe.
A Murder, or Hunting Accident?Deep in the Colorado wilderness, on the second day of hunting season in 1995, veteran police officer Doug Kyle came across what appeared to be a terrible tragedy. It would actually turn out to be much more complicated — and bone-chilling.Lying on the ground bleeding was Bruce Dodson, 48, with an orange hunting vest at his side. His wife of three months, Janice, was screaming for help. "I picked up the orange vest and was just screaming at him: 'Why didn't you have your vest on?' " Janice said."She's crying and carrying on," said Kyle. "I said, 'Is this your husband?' And she said, 'Yes, that's Bruce. Help — you've got to help him.' "Bruce was beyond help. He seemed destined to be yet another victim of a hunting accident, mistaken for game — a mistake that would repeat itself more than 100 times that year. But the day after, an autopsy revealed Bruce hadn't taken just a single bullet, but three. Bill Booth, an investigator for the district attorney's office, said he started to believe this was homicide. Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. To help support the show, find us on Patreon: patreon.com HWW is now on Discord: https://discord.gg/F9cMyf7JFJTo our amazing listeners. The life of a recording musician varies from day to day, so Jon and Bill talk about how they balance their schedules, how they work to be consistent players, and why "egos must be checked at the door."

Bill Booth’s grandfather, Tom Booth, came to Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1912. There, he opened a hardware store on Main Street. “Pappy” Booth soon sold the business to his son, George H. Booth who changed the name to Tupelo Hardware. Owned and operated by the Booth family since 1926, it remains for many, the go-to place for hard-to-find tools. Famously, Gladys Presley bought her son Elvis, his first guitar there. In this interview, conducted in 1991, Bill Booth shares with us some memories of his grandfather and of life growing up in Tupelo. During the early days of automobile travel, most Mississippi roads were primitive, unpaved wagon trails. Booth recalls how his grandfather once stopped to help a friend who was stuck in a stream. As a lifelong citizen of Tupelo, Booth witnessed a lot of important changes over the years. He discusses the city’s first traffic light and one cantankerous driver’s reaction to it. For many Mississippians, their first time behind the wheel of a car was on a secluded country road. Booth recounts learning to drive his grandfather’s 1925 Buick on a trip to Shreveport. PODCAST BONUS: President Franklin D. Roosevelt came to Tupelo in 1934 to deliver a speech on the Tennessee Valley Authority. Booth remembers how his boy scout troop lined the path to the President’s car, and being patted on the head by FDR, afterwards. PHOTO: MDAH - FDR in Tupelo 1934.

This week's program recaps a fabulous presentation I heard at the recent Association of Science-Technology conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. Entitled Knowing Your Community: To Be More Interesting, Be More Interested, a panel of science center professionals led by Bill Booth described the transformations that are occurring in their institutions when they listened to what their communities had to say rather than what the institution wanted to hear. Bill and his colleague Kristin Leigh from Explora will share concrete tools and examples of how science centers—and all cultural institutions—can shift their focus from working for their communities to working with them.
