I told a small, self-deprecating… white lie.To get out of committing to volunteering for a new project.My bad.You see? I had history with this person. Co-founder of an advocacy nonprofit. Small. Neurodivergency-affirming. Big ideas. Little organization.“I'm not sure I'm the right guy for your project. I just can't seem to do something… this big… anymore.” I just want to gracefully bow out. Yet not hurt feelings. Or challenge them.I plough on gamely, “Maybe we can chat once in a while…?”“Sure you can! I know you can do it!” That zeal of a new convert to pop psychology. Rapid-fire words ricocheting out of my headset. “You just have imposter syndrome. I know. Because I do too! I have this book you could read…”I tried to be gentle. “My friend, I don't have a syndrome of any kind. I'm just telling the truth. No need for diagnosis.”It went rapidly downhill from there.Let's say, I felt immediate… unease.While we were talking. But I didn't know why. Yet.But like a persistent smell neurodivergent-dot-me can never ignore… that feeling lingered. Building as I replay the conversation over and over. Then it takes days to recover. Before I can work on my projects again.Because what I experienced? Some label “benevolent ableism.” I call it soft-core discrimination. Trying to look like… kindness.I'll never know their motivation. I won't risk the pain of asking.You see? “Kind” words can do real damage.All you really gotta do to cause pain? Simply speak in the grammar of help… then act out the logic of condescension.That's it.Some research supports this… catch-22. Patronizing support? It's one of the most common, damaging, and invisible acts one human can perpetrate on another disabled human. That I know.Cuz it's deniable. So at best, socially dangerous to challenge. A lot like an unwanted, ambiguous… intimate… gesture. From an acquaintance. And queasiness has only gotten worse for me with every ambiguous human interchange.The weapon and pain metaphors I use in the performance piece? Intentional.Cuz the escalation you may experience?These. Are. My. Reality.This ain't about an additional diagnosis. Or a personality flaw. It is about me being autistic-as-fuck me.Yeah. I may be a tad more sensitive to condescension than the Average Bear. Just like I need sunglasses. Even on many cloudy days.Which ought to be actually advocated for. Not patronized. By an advocate. Or employer. Or loved one.Cuz this is not something I can self-help-guru my way out of. Or be trained to control through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.Like I need one more thought to exhaustingly monitor. Monitoring that could never “cure” my sensory issue with smells. Or my freaking balance problems. Least of all my condescension trauma…So, the only guiding principle I must remember when I navigate social or professional waters…“I must honor my limits. Or they will disable me.”One last thing…I wrote this about my real experiences as an autistic professional. In a world unkind to difference.But my guess? Folks from any “disadvantaged” background may see themselves in it.Let's build on that kinship. Maybe make a change. Why would a group of young Jews who escaped the Holocaust choose to parachute back into Nazi-occupied Europe? How did they become heroes despite the failure of that mission? Author Matti Friedman joins EconTalk's Russ Roberts to unravel these mysteries through his book Out of the Sky, revealing why a failed mission became one of Israel's most powerful founding myths. At the heart of the story is Hannah Senesh, a 23-year-old Hungarian poet who traded her Budapest life for a kibbutz, then traded the kibbutz for a parachute and a near-certain death sentence--and whose poems, scribbled on scraps of paper in forests near the Hungarian border, became some of the most famous texts in modern Hebrew.

Graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Nebraska in 2002, Chuma began his “jump” into BASE with a solid skydiving career beginning at the age of 16 in Caldwell, Idaho. In 2007, after completing over 700 skydives, Chuma made the move to Twin Falls, ID where he now runs a very successful BASE Jumping School – Inter-Demented BASE. Chuma's impressive athletic background in gymnastics, skiing, and pole-vaulting has provided him with the necessary skill set and physical fitness to successfully perform complicated aerial maneuvers in BASE Jumping. He has become well known for his originality and style within this arena and is responsible for several world recognized BASE Jumping tricks, as well as pioneering many unpacked jumps and refining the “game over”. Chuma is responsible for making the “tweener,” named by Chuma, famous amongst jumpers by successfully performing this trick off multiple BASE exits. Chuma's background in gymnastics gives him a unique kinesthetic awareness that sets him apart from other BASE jumpers, when it comes to tricks, solid exits and landings. In 2009, Chuma and his former business partners developed the world's first commercial Tandem Base Jumping operation. During the experimental phase, Chuma personally performed many test jumps with experienced BASE jumpers acting as passengers. Since 2009, he has completed over 500 tandem BASE jumps without incident, and currently holds the record for the most tandem BASE jumps completed. Recently, he has completed a tandem jump off all four objects in the word BASE. It is believed that he is the first and only person in the world to have done this. His company, Tandem BASE LLC, has performed tandem BASE jumps at bridge day in Fayetteville, West Virginia for the past 4 years. Chuma was the first person in the world to complete a tandem BASE jump from the Menara KL Tower, and the Wisma Sanyan in Malaysia, 2013. In 2014, Chuma became the first person to perform a tandem BASE jump in Zakynthos, Greece at Shipwreck beach, and later that year in Arco, Italy at Monte' Brento. Later in 2014, Chuma finished in the top 16 at the Red Bull Aces Wingsuit race, an event where the world's best wingsuit athletes completed in a slalom course held in place by helicopters. In 2015, Chuma performed the first quadriplegic tandem BASE jump with passenger Pete Bonser. The following year, Chuma took the first person with cerebral palsy, Marlena Katene, on a jump from the KL tower in Malaysia. One of his favorite achievements includes taking 102 year old Dorothy Cluster on a tandem BASE jump from the Perrine Bridge in June 2013. Being able to travel the world, meeting like-minded people, and BASE jumping in incredible places is Chuma's biggest joy. Currently, Chuma is moving towards a career in television and film, and has made several television appearances in the past 4 years including: the Travel Channel's Ride-iculous,  Trip Flip, and MSNBC's Caught on Camera.  He is currently working with producers and colleagues on a documentary that highlights the type of lifestyle he enjoys – being a professional “fun maker”. Despite this very impressive professional history, Sean remains grounded and humble regarding his achievements and always stresses the importance of planning, experience and guidance in all areas of BASE jumping.

The guys learn about an old tradition that is about as wild as it sounds

There are a lot of ways of getting around in the natural world, from hiking to canoeing to biking to swimming. Parachuting is one that few of us have experience with, but is an important historical and current mode of travel. Fortunately, today we have on the podcast someone who has firsthand experience and is the author of two books that relate to paratroopers in WWII.In our conversation, we talk with James Fenelon about his background in the military and in using parachutes, the idea of using a parachute as a tool for travel in military combat and how that has changed, as well as the historical stories of paratroopers that James has written about in both Angels Against the Sun and Four Hours of Fury. Ultimately, James uses the stories of real people and their experiences to contextualize some very important moments in our history. And what are those paratrooper boots and who gets to where them? James answers all of our questions.  

I promise this isn't a political episode. I just share a few thoughts about some anxiety I'm having about where the US is and how I feel embarrassed to live here. I also talk about ethics and how I did something I don't feel very good about. Then some thoughts on The Bear. At the end, I confess that I decimated an entire spider family and feel bad about that as well. You know, normal stuff.
