Kate was born at a Florence Crittenton home in Kansas City, MO, in 1970 and placed with her adoptive family at 9 days old. She always knew she was adopted and has always wanted to find her family of origin. This was finally made possible when Missouri changed its laws allowing adopted people access to their original birth certificates. She has been in reunion with her mother since 2018, meeting her in person and getting a life-changing hug in 2019. That hug was the first time she had a feeling of being home. Kate is also in reunion with her father's family, who have been welcoming.Reunion has been beautiful, messy, painful, liberating, and the most life-impacting thing Kate has ever experienced. Finding her story and learning about her people, though sometimes painful, has been incredibly grounding, and she now feels like a real person. While finding family has been an overall positive experience, some of the stories have been quite difficult. Her father went on a shooting spree, killing three people, including two police officers, and wounding several more before taking his own life in Harrisonville, MO, in 1972. As luck would have it, she had a chance encounter with an author while visiting his grave for the first time. The author was doing research for a book he was writing about her father. This encounter was instrumental in helping Kate find healing, as it led to factual information about what happened that day in 1972, as well as connections with some of her father's friends, giving her an understanding of the kind of person he was beyond the story he is most remembered for. Kate has been fortunate that her mother was willing to answer all of her questions, even though they were uncomfortable and seemed repetitive. This helped her to understand the decisions made by her grandparents. Had things turned out differently and Kate remained with her natural parents, her name would have been Lisa Simpson, which makes her giggle. The Adoptee's Journey: From Loss and Trauma to Healing and Empowerment by Cameron Lee SmallThank you to our Patreons! The Old Testament tabernacle was meticulously crafted according to divine instruction and served as the central place of worship and communion between God and His people during Israel's wilderness journey. Far more than a portable sanctuary, the tabernacle was the tangible manifestation of God's presence dwelling among His covenant people. Its detailed construction, from the outer court to the Most Holy Place, was imbued with theological significance, providing the nation of Israel with rich symbolism in their worship. The alter of incense was a sacred piece of furniture in the tabernacle used for burning incense as a daily offering to the Lord. It was located just outside the Holy of Holies. For the New Testament believer, the altar of incense has tons of typological significance, with layers of prophetic meaning, holding truths that find their fullest expression in Christ. The tabernacle wasn't just for Israel but it testifies to the divine design that culminates in Christ's redemptive mission and relationship with mankind. To discuss the typology behind the altar of incense specifically, we have invited Brian Hedges, pastor at Heartland Baptist Fellowship in Harrisonville, MO and president of Word First Publishing.Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore

Missouri's new governor wants to expand school choice. Governor Mike Kehoe (R) made his comments during his inauguration address two weeks ago, and he's expected to provide more details during Tuesday afternoon's State of the State. "We will face entrenched special interests, a fear of change, and a culture that says we should keep doing things the way we've always done them. But Missourians did not send us here to do what's comfortable. They expect results. They deserve results. And with my administration, they will get results," Kehoe told the crowd at his inauguration. State Sen. Rick Brattin (R-Harrisonville) joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri". Brattin chairs the Senate Education Committee and this is national school choice week. Chairman Brattin tells listeners that he wants to give children an opportunity to get out of failing districts and into districts where they can receive a great education. Chairman Brattin also tells listeners that there is what he calls "woke indoctrination" happening at many public schools in Missouri, referencing the highly-publicized 2023 incident in Columbia involving three drag queens at the Columbia Values Diversity breakfast, with CPS students in the audience. Chairman Brattin also says the Freedom Caucus is focused on making Missouri healthy again. He says more and more people want to know what is going into our food and that people want to be more healthy:

Nine Republicans are seeking Missouri's GOP gubernatorial nomination on Tuesday. Incumbent Governor Mike Parson (R) isn't seeking re-election. Former President Donald Trump has endorsed three GOP candidates: Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft and State Sen. Bill Eigel (R-Weldon Spring). Lt. Governor Kehoe joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." Senator Eigel blasted Mr. Kehoe this week on 939 the Eagle, describing him as a "liberal Democrat" and that nothing would change that fact. Lt. Governor Kehoe responded this morning on 939 the Eagle, telling listeners that Senator Eigel is desperate and that he hasn't accomplished anything in the Missouri Senate. Mr. Kehoe is campaigning today and this weekend in rural Missouri's Stockton, Harrisonville and St. Joseph and will be in Blue Springs as well. Rural Missouri once was a Democratic stronghold with leaders like U.S. Reps. Jerry Litton (D-Chillicothe), Harold Volkmer (D-Hannibal) and Ike Skelton (D-Lexington). They've also passed away. Republicans have dominated in recent years. Mr. Kehoe tells listeners that the Democratic Party left the people in rural Missouri and that Republicans are the party of working families. He's optimistic about Tuesday's primary and also has the support of Governor Parson:

Rick Brattin of Harrisonville, Denny Hoskins of Warrensburg and Nick Schroer of Defiance. Loudermill last week filed a similar complaint against U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee. The four lawsuits are almost identical in their allegations against, which involve the lawmakers using social media platforms to repost a photo of Loudermill in handcuffs shortly after the shooting. “The publication of the false representation that plaintiff was an ‘illegal alien' and a ‘shooter' was not made in good faith nor was it made by defendant with any legitimate interest in making or duty to make such assertions,” the lawsuit against Brattin states. Wisconsin Voters Vote To Limit Voting… No Seriouslyhttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/04/wisconsin-amendments-harmful-voting-elections?CMP=Share_iOSApp_OtherWisconsin voters enshrined in the state constitution on Tuesday two amendments that election officials and voting rights advocates worry will hurt election administration in the state. The first bans election offices from accessing private grants – a source of revenue that election officials relied on in 2020 to run elections during the pandemic and have since used to stock voting equipment in polling places.During the 2020 elections, election offices across the country – already chronically underfunded – accessed grants from the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a non-profit organization funded by Mark Zuckerberg, the Meta CEO, and his wife, Priscilla Chan. The grants were doled out with the explicit purpose of funding Covid-19 mitigation in polling places, and election offices used the money for things like personal protective equipment and to set up drive-through, contactless voting. Iowa Senate Says “Suck It Up” to folks hurt by mega corporation chemicalshttps://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2024/04/02/iowa-senate-votes-to-limit-lawsuits-over-roundup-other-farm-and-lawn-chemicals/A bill that would partially shield the maker of a widely used agricultural and lawn herbicide from lawsuits over its health effects was adopted by the Iowa Senate on Tuesday.Senate File 2412 would protect Bayer against claims it failed to warn people about the potential health effects of Roundup so long as its product is labeled as required by federal regulators. The legislation would apply to all domestic producers of herbicides and pesticides, but eliminating the failure-to-warn claims is part of Bayer's public strategy to “manage and mitigate the risks of Roundup litigation,” according to its website. The company hopes the U.S. Supreme Court decides that the claims are overruled by federal law, which the company predicts “could largely end the Roundup litigation.” But a federal appeals court rejected that argument in February.Bayer says about 167,000 lawsuits have been filed by people who claim their exposure to Roundup caused ailments such as cancer, often non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The herbicide has been used to kill weeds for about four decades. The litigation has cost the company billions of dollars. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has said Roundup's primary ingredient, glyphosate, is not likely to cause cancer in humans and that it poses no health risks “when used in accordance with its current label.” But in 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer determined glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”Missouri House Speaker Plocher, Now Candidate for Secretary of State, Narrows Focushttps://www.stltoday.com/news/local/government-politics/investigation-of-missouri-s-house-speaker-zeroes-in-on-lobbyist-aides-and-advisers/article_f77bc748-f203-11ee-8b90-d33ac8c58ed3.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterAn investigation of the leader of the Missouri House appears to be focused on his efforts to steer an $800,000 state contract to a software vendor.Meeting for the seventh time since launching a probe into House Speaker Dean Plocher, the House Ethics Committee was expected to take closed-door testimony Wednesday from a handful of aides and advisers. If Plocher appears, it would mark his second time before the bipartisan panel, which has hired an investigator to conduct interviews and help prepare a report outlining any findings.Among those on the schedule is Rod Jetton, whom Plocher hired as his chief of staff last year as the scandal was unfolding. If Archer did give birth, her baby could only be treated with surgeries and lifelong help – pain that Archer was unwilling to put a newborn through. Without those surgeries, which the infant might not survive, Archer's baby would die shortly after birth. But due to Tennessee's near-total abortion ban, Archer could not terminate her pregnancy in her home state and, instead, had to wait more than three weeks for an appointment at an out-of-state abortion clinic.“I don't want to confide in a stranger that I'm having to get an abortion because my baby can't survive outside of my womb and I can't get the care that I need as soon as I need it,” Archer recalled thinking. “Those three weeks were really bizarre, challenging, painful – beyond what it needed to be.”Investigation Into Marion Co. In a long-awaited conclusion to a two-decade-old case, Jennifer Hall, a former respiratory therapist, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for her role in the deaths of two hospital patients. The sentencing comes after a series of events that began in 2002 at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Missouri.  Originally facing charges of two counts of first-degree murder, Jennifer Hall ultimately pleaded guilty to reduced charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of 75-year-old Fern Franco and 37-year-old David Wesley Harper. Additionally, Hall pleaded guilty to one count of attempted second-degree assault in connection with the case. The deaths occurred amidst a cluster of incidents that medical authorities described as "medically suspicious."  Fern Franco and David Harper were among a total of nine patients who tragically lost their lives at Hedrick Medical Center during several months in 2002. The charging documents highlighted the unusual circumstances surrounding these deaths, leading to a renewed investigation that spanned years.  Livingston County Prosecuting Attorney Adam Warren expressed his thoughts on the sentencing, stating, "A sentence 20 years in the making… But for now we all sleep better now knowing she is behind bars."  The unsettling case began when Hall commenced her employment at the hospital in December 2001. Until she was placed on administrative leave in May of the following year, a notable increase in cardiac arrests or "Code Blue" events had been observed, soaring from an average of one per year to 18 incidents during her tenure.  The case resurfaced after an analysis of Fern Franco's tissue samples revealed the presence of morphine and a potent muscle relaxant, both unauthorized substances in her system. These findings led investigators to question the circumstances surrounding Franco's death and sparked suspicions about Hall's involvement due to her close proximity to the affected patients, her access to potentially lethal medications, and her consistent notifications of patients' cardiac emergencies.  Over the course of the investigation, it was determined that nine patients had succumbed to their conditions while under Hall's care, while another nine managed to recover. The case eventually resulted in Hall being charged with first-degree murder in Fern Franco's death.  Scott Lindley, the county coroner, alleged that hospital officials attempted to cover up concerns about Hall's actions to avoid negative publicity. Despite the concerns, no criminal investigation was initiated at that time.  A wrongful-death lawsuit was filed in 2010 on behalf of the families of five deceased patients, naming the hospital and its current operator, St. Luke's Health System. However, the lawsuit was dismissed by the Missouri Supreme Court in 2019 due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.  St. Luke's Health System released a statement clarifying that it assumed control of Hedrick Medical Center over a year after the events occurred. Meanwhile, Prosecutor Adam Warren took up the investigation in 2012, driven by the belief that a comprehensive inquiry had not been carried out previously.  The patients affected by the events ranged in age and health conditions, from World War II veteran Charles O'Hara at 88 years old to 37-year-old David Harper, who had been on the path to recovery from pneumonia before his untimely death. Shirley Eller, aged 49, was on the verge of being discharged after treatment for pneumonia when she suddenly collapsed and passed away.  The unsettling circumstances surrounding these deaths raised questions about the nature of the fatalities. Jennifer Hall's actions were scrutinized, leading to the conclusion that her involvement led to the unfortunate demise of some patients.  In the case of Fern Franco, a vulnerable and elderly patient, Hall's actions were particularly damning. The administration of the muscle relaxant succinylcholine resulted in what prosecutors described as a "ghastly death from suffocation" while Franco remained conscious. Hall's administrative leave following Franco's death coincided with a "Code Blue" incident drop.  Although Hall was eventually terminated from her position, it was not directly due to the patient's deaths. Her firing came after hospital authorities discovered her conviction for an arson incident at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, a previous workplace. Despite spending time behind bars, she was acquitted after a retrial. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hour 1 -  Good Wednesday morning! Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: The Springfield News-Leader wrote a piece about Springfield protesters showing support for transgender children. Nick reached out to the News-Leader regarding some disinformation within the story. The story states, "SB 42, proposed by Republican Sen. Rick Brattin of Harrisonville, contains measures that would allow school districts to ban transgender girls from youth sports. It is one of many proposed bills this session geared toward restricting the activity of transgender individuals at school and when accessing health care." Nick read through SB 42... Here's what it says, "Upon adoption by a school district and approval of the residents of the school district, no public school shall knowingly allow a student of the male sex who is enrolled in such public school to participate in a school-sponsored athletic team that is exclusively for students of the female sex. Beginning July 1, 2024, the Joint Committee on Education shall study exclusively male or female athletic events and the impact of a policy that prohibits participation in those events by individuals of the opposite sex. By January 1, 2025, the Committee shall report its findings to the General Assembly." Nick asked the News-Leader where in SB 42 does it ban transgender girls from youth sports. He has not heard back. Men dominate nominations in the top categories for this year's Brits, as the music awards enter their second year without separate prizes for male and female artists.

On this episode, I feature 3 cases chosen by my past coworkers who are also listeners of my podcast! Two cases are local to us, one is local to my friend at the time she lived in Kentucky, and the final case is one I have been wanting to get out there for a long time. Case #1 On October 31, 2019, 35-year-old Benjamin Lee Figard of New Paris phoned 9-1-1 to report that he had shot and killed his 40-year-old wife, Amanda Jane Figard, and his 12-year-old step-daughter, Laina Rae Haney and placed their bodies in the basement. Case #2 On the night of January 8, 2015, 21-year-old Stephanie Waters went to meet 15-year-old Ryan Hardwick and 16-year-old Deauntay Dontaz Moye in place of her boyfriend, Benjamin Holsinger to sell them some Marijuana. When she arrived with her dog, Duke, the two teens shot her and her dog, placed her in the back of the vehicle, and drove around the Altoona area while smoking the Marijuana. Case #3 29-year-old Tromain Jerome Mackall from southern Maryland moved to Owensboro, Kentucky to be with his girlfriend, Johnathan Dewitt aka Simone Dahlia in February 2016. After attending a party on July 24, 2016 and leaving at 1:30 A.M. on the morning of July 25, he went missing. A body was found floating in a truck toolbox on August 2nd in Spring Fork Creek near Owensboro Road in Falls of Rough, Kentucky about 30 miles from the party Tromain had attended. The body was identified as Tromain's using dental records on August 23rd. The cause of death was determined to be homicide from multi-modal asphyxiation. 5 people were charged in connection to the kidnapping and murder of Tromain Mackall. Case #4 Revell Reuben Jeeter, a 59-year-old man from Maryland moved to the quiet village of Harrisonville, Pennsylvania on 12 acres of land he had purchased to enjoy his retirement with his best friend, his dog, Bubba. On July 21, 2003, after obtaining meat from a butcher shop in McConnellsburg with his dog, he was to attend a crab feed with his friends and family but did not show up, and has not been seen since. He is still missing 17 years later. Anyone with information is asked to call the PSP at (717) 485-3131.
