Send Us Feedback via TextOlav Zipser, born in Simmern, Germany, began his skydiving career in 1986 and quickly revolutionized the sport by introducing non-traditional forms of body flight - in other words departing the known world of flying on your belly to flying on multiple axes, namely on your head. His innovative approach led to the development of FreeFly, a discipline that has transformed skydiving techniques and competitions worldwide.Since his first jump nearly 40 years ago, Olav founded multiple free fly schools around the world to recruit others to “Freefly Your Mind.” Olav has trained 14 world champion skydivers, and he was instrumental in bringing free fly to the FAI making it an official category in competition. His achievements also include jumping from the stratosphere in 1995 from 47,000 feet, winning an Emmy Award for his performance in the X-Games, creating the Space Games, inventing the space ball, and has successfully survived more than 25,000 skydives in his career. In October of 2024, Olav was inducted into the International Skydiving Hall of Fame where he was presented by a free fly prodigy in his own right, Rook Nelson. Very impressive accomplishments considering that Olav was on the path to becoming a dentist until he made a skydive in Texel, in the Netherlands in the mid-80s where he learned to, as he describes, swim in the ocean of air.
First up is an update to the Chinese drone ban discussion. The Senate version of the 2025 NDAA was released this week, without the Countering CCP Drones Act language in the bill. This is a great win, but we can't let up. The NDAA is an act that must pass every year and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said that Congress plans to put together a China-focused bill later this year. Please continue to educate and talk to your Senators and Representatives. Let them know that this and other legislation that would ban Chinese drones is not okay. To see how you can get involved, visit the DAA's website! Next up, a drone show in Washington State lost 55 drones due to a malfunction. Starlight Drone Shows was scheduled to perform a drone show over Angle Lake, WA on the 4th of July. Despite initial GPS locks, 55 drones out of 200 lost GPS and landed in the lake. None of the drones flew away or went into the Geofence, showing that programming worked as expected. The remainder of the show was cancelled and 145 other drones were successfully recovered. Starlight was in charge of the Sun N Fun show that we attended in April in Lakeland Florida with over 500 drones, which went flawlessly for 2 nights during the show. We'll keep you updated if we see more about what caused the GPS loss. Third up, Freefly has released Astro Prime! The new Astro Prime has a 28-minute flight time with a Sony LR1, a new battery system guaranteed to 500 cycles, and a pro controller. Payloads include a Sony LR1 as a main camera with additional payloads including Wiris cameras, Sony Alpha 7R-IV, Green Valley Lidar, Sentra Multispectral cameras, Internal labs LiDAR, Hovermap LiDAR, Rock Robotic LiDAR, Micasense multispectral cameras, and more. The Astro Prime is also NDAA Compliant and Blue UAS, made in Woodinville, WA. Pricing for the Astro Prime is $27,000 for the aircraft only while a kit including batteries, controller, and aircraft is $32,250. Pretty cool aircraft from Freefly! Last up, Watts's Innovations appears to have shut down and is "Shifting to new horizons". It's unclear what the new horizons are, but we wish the folks over at Watt's Innovations the very best! Another Lunatic Mid-Week Reboot with the one and only Olav Zipser! The Father of Freefly. Was he the first person to be on his head in the air? of course not, but he was most certainly the first to go out of his way to stay there! Dancing around the clouds like Peter Pan for the last 30+ years, Olav Zipser has been "freeflying his mind" and traveling the world encouraging others to learn to do the same with not just technical ability, but with heart and passion. With ambitions that range from catching his shadow and its rainbow on every cloud he could find, to looking for ways to blast into outer space, Olav has led his best version of the life he almost didn't choose.

O Balde com 3 é o podcast onde uma professora, um jogador de poker e um maconheiro recebem o convidado, numa mesa de bar, para falar sobre a vida.
Marc is first and foremost a super funny guy and a good human being. He is a geek about anything he's passionate about, whether it is skydiving, hockey or golf. Marc competed at the world level and made it on the world record all that while keeping his day job as a flight attendant. While he says that the biggest chunk of his life dedicated to skydiving is behind him, don't be surprised if you see this giant redhead hanging out at a drop zone or a tunnel near you.
Sylvia is joined by Melissa Lowe to discuss being a pioneer in the sport of skydiving. She shares openly the way she integrates her entrepreneurship, skydiving, yoga and family with her history, personal struggles, lessons on what has worked and a unique perspective on role models, mentors and confronting angst and fear. They talk about comradery and loss in a tight-knit community, and much more. Melissa holds 23 skydiving world records and is a licensed pilot, yoga instructor, author, and mom. Also a writer, The Sugar Alpha Chronicles are a series of books based on the life of the late skydiving pioneer and Melissa’s father, Roger Nelson's life as a drug smuggler, iconic figure in the sport of skydiving, family man, and eventually a convicted felon. He wrote these books while serving his 5 year prison sentence and smuggled them out of prison where after his death, Melissa was able to finish the project and get them published. A decade’s worth of research and finding out truths of her past as a drug smuggler's daughter this series brought the memoirs into fruition.Topics Include:Growing up in a skydiving community drop zoneBeing a drug smuggler's daughterBreaking away from family moldGetting sober and resetting identityInfluences from learning and practicing yogaStability and instability as a young adultThe experience of flying with your bodyProcessing loss Wingsuit flying, Freestyle, Freefly and competition The Highlight Pro Skydiving - the all-female demonstration jump teamMission and mediaWorld records, attempts and other successesEntrepreneurship and leadershipAnd other topics...Resources Mentioned:https://melissa-lowe.com/about/Melissa's Books:Sugar Alpha: The Life and Times of Señor Huevos Grandes and Charlie Bravo: Descent into Darkness and DangerOriginally written by Roger, the series were not published until years after his death when Melissa picked up the dusty manuscript and turned them into books. Sneak-Peek - The New Freefly Astro Drone, Flying Drones in NYC, Drone Industry Updates, Ban on Chinese Drones Our biggest story this week is about the all-new Freefly Astro drone. Freefly is known for its super-expensive and heavily-engineered Alta series of drones which are used mainly in big productions. Now, it is heartening to note that this American drone manufacturer has decided to target a wider audience with their new Astro drone. But, are the specs on this new drone comparable (or even superior) to the likes of DJI, Autel, and Skydio? And with such specs, can we expect this new drone to be launched at an affordable price point? For the latest scoop on this new drone, tune in to this segment of the show. Our next big story is about flying drones in NYC. As most of you might be aware, an old avigation law makes it illegal for pilots to fly drones in NYC. Notwithstanding this law, a drone pilot recently posted a breathtaking video capturing the beauty of Manhattan on Facebook and YouTube. Because of COVID, the streets below were quite empty which resulted in a safe flight. There are many NYC drone pilots who are disregarding laws and just taking to the skies. Do you think it is high time that the FAA should change such drone laws? Do such archaic drone laws serve little to no purpose? Other stories covered in today's show include drone industry updates, how the ban on Chinese drones and spare parts is affected industry majors, reasons why remote-id is set to become a reality soon, and the marked difference in FAA's attitude towards manned and unmanned aircraft. We hope you enjoy this show! Whether you are just getting started or looking to increase your revenue stream, our drone service providers are ready to help you achieve your most ambitious goals. A lot is happening in the drone space right now, with one of the big stories being the emergence of open-source for drones. Auterion has found itself an interesting niche in the industry, developing a drone operating system and analytics platform based on open-source R&D that is rapidly gaining traction. Think iOS vs. Android (Auterion). Auterion enables drone manufacturers to focus on their hardware, so they no don't have to worry about developing and continually updating the software layer that controls the aircraft and captures and manages the data. This reduces R&D costs and enables companies to focus on innovating new applications and payloads and focusing on key differentiators. Auterion is building an ecosystem of hardware platforms unified around a single software system, with a consortium of companies mounting a credible challenge against market leader DJI, chipping away at their market dominance. GE Aviation, Freefly, Avy, Impossible Aerospace, Quantum-Systems, and several other companies already use Auterion, with more in the works. At the heart of Auterion is PX4, the most used flight control software (in terms of units) in non-DJI drones. The project was started by Lorenz over 10 years ago and today counts more than 8000 users (individuals and companies) and 600+ contributors. Because the project is open source (and is permissively licensed) it has gained broad adoption worldwide and is today comparable to "the Linux" for drones. Hundreds of companies build components, products, and solutions that are compatible with these open standards. Lorenz Meier Co-Founder of Auterion joins me on the Tech Talks Daily Podcast to share the story behind the software platform designed to make large-scale drone operations simple, safe, and fully integrated in workflows.

Today's question is about the Freefly ALTA 8 Pro. Should you choose the Freefly ALTA 8 over DJI for drone mapping? Our caller, Ken from NJ has come up with a great question once again. Ken is curious if the Freefly ALTA 8 is suitable for drone mapping. Is it true that you can fly waypoint missions with the Freefly ALTA? And, should professional drone mappers consider buying this expensive drone over proven DJI products like the Inspire 2 and Matrice 600? We answer Ken's questions by discussing the pros & cons of the Freefly ALTA 8 in great detail. We also speculate about the current uncertainty that has enveloped the drone manufacturing industry. With DJI halting production for the Phantom 4, are other drone manufacturers lining up to fill this void? Is DJI waiting for an opportune time to launch the Phantom 5?
