Marley shares her inspiring journey of curating and developing a children's art gallery in partnership with the Southwest Art Gallery and Science Center. At just 16 years old, Marley embarked on this project to provide art-related opportunities for kids in her community in North Dakota, where such resources were scarce. She discusses her passion for art as a self-taught artist, the need she identified in her community, and how her collaboration with the Southwest Art Gallery, which shares her mission, facilitated the creation of this new space. Marley reflects on her experience as a volunteer and the process of curating the first exhibit, highlighting the importance of fostering creativity among youth. Tune in to learn how one young artist is making a difference in her community through art! About Our Guest: My name is Marly Barnett, I am a 17-year-old Girl Scout from Troop 85112 and I live in the SW region of North Dakota. My Gold Award project, titled “SW Art Gallery and Science Center's Children's Gallery”, was to develop a children's art gallery for grades K-12 within the physical building of the SW Art Gallery and Science Center. I started this project at age 16 in April 2024, and as a result, I have advanced from a volunteer position to a paid role as Student Director of the SW Art Gallery and Science Center's Children's Gallery in October. Most recently I added Social Media Coordinator to my responsibilities. The reason I chose this as my Gold Award project was for two reasons, one to play a more active role in my community and two, as a self-taught artist, to make the arts more accessible for young artists in Region 8 of North Dakota.

Who knew a town with a population of less than a hundred residents could make such an impact on the Multiverse? We never doubted the possibility. When you visit Green Bank, you'll enjoy a quiet, uninterrupted experience exploring the observatory – unlike Captain America and the Falcon. The Green Bank Observatory offers bus tours of the campus and takes you close to the jaw-dropping 485-foot telescope. While you're here, explore the Science Center and the Exhibit Hall to learn about the telescope's contributions to research and the history behind the observatory. Learn more: https://www.jobcase.com/articles/wv-dcr #3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – After spending its first 22 years working to restore and protect the Coal River system, the Coal River Group is now setting its sights on promoting tourism in the five-county corridor through which the 88-mile Coal River system passes. “We're transitioning from being primarily a fix-it group to a tourism development organization,” said Coal River Group co-founder and board chairman Bill Currey of St. Albans. “The river's changed dramatically for the better in the past 22 years. It's been exciting to see all the positive things that have happened to it. Now, it's time to take on a new challenge.” The group has led the effort to build 20 public stream access sites along the river system and mapped out a water trail connecting them. They also placed historic markers and signage at the former locks site used by barges and steamboats to haul coal prior to the Civil War. Today, more than 15,000 paddlers, most of them kayakers, ply the waters of the Coal River system every year. Modern optics give birders the opportunities to feel as though they are up close and personal with the bird we watch, but nothing we experience through binoculars compares to the experience with birds that wildlife rehabbers get to enjoy. Rehabilitators not only get to know birds on the individual level, but they get broader insight into the impacts of humans on bird populations as well. Tim Jasinski is a Wildlife Rehabilitation Specialist at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center in Bay Village, Ohio. He oins us to talk about his experiences working with birds near Cleveland. Also, Purple Martins will be heading northward soon, but the number of landlords waiting for them continues to decline. The DaVinci Science Center is a national award-winning nonprofit organization that has brought science to life to science since 1992. It was established by a faculty member at Lehigh University. It was initially formed in a former Bethlehem steel plant building with hands-on experience. Now the location is downtown Allentown. For visitors, it showcases the relationship between art and science. “A lot of our scientists have pretty extensive art pursuits, whether it's in their free time or, as you know, a second position or a former job. And I think that's because there's a kind of natural intersection between the two disciplines. The biggest thing for me is whenever you're trying to solve a science problem, you have to be able to think creative, “said Lin Erickson, CEO of the DaVinci Science Center. The Science Center offers hands on experiences for everyone of all ages. It also offers an opportunity for students to get out of their classrooms to experience hands-on exhibits like curiosity hall. It was inspired by Leonardo DaVinci. “You know, Walter Isaacson's book talks about Leonardo and his genius and says that that's why he was such a genius more than the other people whose written about Einstein jobs and so forth. He was such a genius and curious. He never finished anything. So, a lot of his artwork, you might know he never finished, but that sets him apart. But in Curiosity Hall, there's three programs, and you're introduced to Leonardo, the artist, Leonardo the scientist and Leonardo the inventor. So, you're at a kiosk and you're looking up at a huge screen. And so, like Leonardo the artist, you have the opportunity to create your own portrait, “said Erickson. Carol Luthar is the Sr. Manager of STEAM Education at the science center. She hopes that visitors walk away with a new appreciation of science. “So, I personally really and I think our whole our whole team really believes that science is for everyone. Science is a great way to help people and help the community. When you think about recent things that we as a society have had to deal with. So, for example, the Covid 19 pandemic science really helped us through that. And it's not a process that's done, you know, individually without creativity, without innovation, without community input. It really requires being kind of like a well-rounded individual. And I think what I hope people get when they come to the science Center is they learn that science is interactive, it's community based, and it's something that is really important. And it's not just having to sit at their desk, read a book about electricity, You know, that's not what while that can be interesting, it's not how real scientists work. So I'm hoping that students get a little broaden their idea of what science is and how it can help us, “said Luthar. On episode 81, Micah and I have the privilege of interviewing the Flight Team interns from the California Science Center. But first, Listener Paul writes in to let us know he wasn't happy with our production quality / sound levels. Through a bunch of emails, thinks get pretty hysterical. Then I talk with Micah about not having any regrets... but he still won't upgrade his ancient PC to a Mac... at least not until Microsoft stops support for Windows 10. Listener Lu wants to know if we have ever witnessed any physical violence on a airplane. This question stems from the incident where a United Airlines flight attendant has part of his shirt bitten off by a human passenger. We then play the recorded interviews we conducted with the Summer Flight Team Interns from the California Science Center. And I can not stress enough how great these kids are and how lucky we were to be able to interview them. They are very special people and it was great to be able to help inspire them during the 8 week program. We hope you enjoy the interviews! The opening and closing music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song and their Good By song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!
Folks often say that dogs are a human's best friend. The Science Center doesn't have any dogs on display (well at least not since our temporary Dogs! exhibit closed), but we sure do have lots of other terrestrial animals to take care of. And our keepers--the folks who do that work--really care about our animals. Do you ever wonder how keepers develop a relationship with the animals they take care of?Josh Hestermann leads the team who takes care of everything that lives on land at the Science Center. He shares what it's like to gain the trust of a military macaw and what goes into taking care of all the terrestrial animals you might see when you visit.Have a question you've been wondering about?
