Tinseltown beckons as we delight in two modern classics poised to define for audiences the breadth of America's cinematic history: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Babylon. But before we pontificate on these recent epics, we enjoy a light Blue Plate Special sampling discussing new releases Kinds of Kindness, Horizon: An American Saga- Chapter 1, and MaXXXine, as well as paying tribute to the late screen legend Shelley Duvall. We eventually shuffle in to see the two splashy films located atop our glittering marquee: listen as we situate Quentin Tarantino's look at TV cowboys squaring off against hippies in 1969 Hollywood towards the top of his filmography, puzzle over where Damien Chazelle's boozy Jazz Age saga leaves him at this stage of his still young career, and generally revel in both films' literal and figurative rages against the dying of the light. Book Vs. Movie: FencesThe 1987 play Vs. the 2016 movieFor Black History Month, the Margos revisit playwright August Wilson (we covered Ma Rainey's Black Bottom last year.) Fences premiered on Broadway in 1987 and is a part of Wilson's acclaimed Pittsburgh Cycle, also known as the Century Cycle, a series of ten plays that chronicle the African American experience in the United States throughout each decade of the 20th century. This is a play about Troy Maxson, a former Negro League baseball player who now works as a garbage collector. Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, the story explores themes of race, family, generational trauma, and unfulfilled dreams. Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of Hollywood's biggest bombs. This month, Not A Bomb is examining some of 2023's biggest box office failures and critically lambasted films! Once again, Brad's shenanigans are back and he's breaking all the rules. On this week's episode, the guys welcome back Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss the very divisive film from 2022 that didn't get a wide release until 2023, Babylon. This three hour epic is an ode to Hollywood during the transition from silent films to talkies (imagine Singing in the Rain but much darker in tone). Notable for its All-Star cast, Babylon failed to make an impact at the box-office and divided most critics. Does Babylon's 3-hour runtime deserve your attention? Is it too obnoxious, trangressive, and pretensious for the average film fan? Or maybe this is a visually majestic tragedy that will soon become a cult classic? Download and listen!Babylon is directed by Damein Chazelle and stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Bryne, Lukas Haas, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, and Tobey Maguire. As the year comes to an end, Not A Bomb wants to know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice! Also, longtime friend of Troy and Brad, Michael Neel, released his movie - Infinite Santa 8000 via Synapse Films. Do yourself a favor and order your copy before they are gone. If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com or Contact Us - here. Meike had ontzettend zin in Babylon. Babylon is a 2022 American epic period comedy drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It features an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li. It chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood's transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s. Chazelle began developing the film in July 2019, with Lionsgate as the frontrunner to acquire the project. It was announced that Paramount Pictures had acquired worldwide rights in November 2019. Much of the main cast joined the project between January 2020 and August 2021, and filming took place in Los Angeles from July to October 2021. Babylon premiered at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles on November 14, 2022, and was released in the United States on December 23. The film polarized critics, who generally praised its cinematography, score, production design and lead performances, but were sharply divided on its direction, screenplay, graphic content, and runtime. It was a box-office bomb, grossing over $41 million against a production budget of $78–80 million.[6] The film received five nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, winning Best Original Score), nine nominations at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), three nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards, and three nominations at the 95th Academy Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message
It's the one of the biggest film of the year starring our new pals Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie but the stars don't end there. To celebrate the release of ‘Babylon' Dermot and Dave caught up with Li Jun Li and Jovan Adepo
As flash floods spread across Los Angeles, we risked our lives driving through torrential rain to see Damien Chazelle's 3-hour Hollywood epic Babylon. The movie massively flopped at the box office losing over $100 million, and it divided critics and audiences alike who either loved or hated it. It was rated R for severe sex & nudity, violence, drug use, profanity, and elephant defecation. We definitely had to see it on the big screen! The movie is set in the late 1920s and early 1930s as motion pictures transitioned from silent films to talkies. It stars Margot Robbie as a very coked-up aspiring actress, Brad Pitt as an aging silent film star, and Diego Calva as a film assistant who bears witness to the whole extravaganza. The movie has excellent supporting roles including Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Lukas Haas, Katherine Waterston, Tobey Maguire, Flea, Jeff Garlin, Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, and even the great Eric Roberts! You might love it or you might hate it, but you owe it to yourself to witness Babylon!
Hollywood - Spectacle & Sacrifice: Damien Chazelle's Babylon This week, Mr. Chavez & I continue our close out of 2022 (going into this third week of 2023), with a look at one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year (and one of its most polarizing films and biggest box-office disappointments), Damien Chazelle's Babylon. This is certainly a film that defines cinematic ambition, but also thematic and visual excess; A film of grotesque imagery and questionable plot points, Chazelle's love and fascination for the Hollywood's Silent Era and the slow emergence into "Talkies" is divisive at the very least. Rarely does a film emrege that is as beautiful, overblown, and misguided as this three-hour opus. Featuring Hollywood Stars interpreting the lives of early screen stars John Gilbert (Brad Pitt) and Clara Bow (Margot Robbie), and newcomers Diego Calva, Li Jun Li, and Jovan Adepo, as well as Jean Smart, Flea, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, Jeff Garlin, and Tobey McGuire. Incredibly problematic, but definitely worth seeing on the big screen, Chazelle's "Love Letter to Cinema and Hate Letter to Los Angeles/Hollywood" is one of the more fascinating spectacles in recent cinema. Take a listen and let us know what you think. As always, we. dive into all aspects of this film. It is best to have seen the film before listening. You've been warned. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com Many Thanks.

Happy post holidays everyone! Only 2 days left of 2022, and since our recording schedule this holiday season has been a bit rocky, I'm doing something a little different this year. We will be doing a two part Season 4 finale, which is ironic because our midseason finale back in June also featured this guest for half and then Chris for the second part. We're releasing Babylon today with Nathaniel, and then Glass Onion which will feature Chris will be available tomorrow across all platforms. So exciting! But first, Babylon! What a movie! 4 years since his last film, "First Man" was released, Damien Chazelle, the first member of the new film brats and the heir apparent to Scorsese, PTA & Robert Altman returns with "Babylon" a film that is one part homage to old Hollywood and all insanity. The film features an all star cast including the likes of Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo & Jean Smart and takes place in Hollywood circa late 1920's-1930's right as sound is being introduced to film and the ripple effects it had on the industry and its members as they try to navigate what their role will be in the new hierarchy of things. Nathaniel joins Dom to break down the latest film from one of their favorite filmmakers, everything that works, everything that doesn't and what, if anything, people can take away from yet ANOTHER movie that Hollywood made about itself. This week we're reviewing the latest film from Damien Chazelle, "Babylon," starring Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Brad Pitt, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li & Tobey Maguire. A mammoth three-hour-long film about Hollywood's transition from silent films to talkies, the movie is a wild, entertaining, and confounding deconstruction of a time of excess and debauchery, which has triggered a lot of mixed responses. What did we think of it, though? Please tune in for our SPOILER-FILLED review as we discuss the themes, characters, performances, crafts, and the film's Oscar prospects in our review below.
