How Arthur & Sons is the culmination of Joe Isidori's family legacy and culinary journey

Joe Isidori is chef-owner of Arthur & Sons, an old-school Italian restaurant he opened in New York City this past summer. Isidori comes from a three-generation restaurant family and grew up in his father's red sauce joint, standing on milk crates to clean shrimp and plate pasta when he was just five. He went on to hone his skills in culinary school, head up Michelin-starred restaurants and create Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beers, which started as a 15-seat luncheonette and grew to an international chain specializing in great burgers and outrageous milkshakes. Black Tap was rooted in nostalgia, and that's the same theme that runs through Arthur & Sons. The menu is filled with Italian-American classics like chicken parm, penne alla vodka and spumoni—all updated with artisan and housemade ingredients and new cooking styles. The cocktails are upgrades of old-school classics, too. Listen as Isidori describes the twists and turns that led to Arthur and Sons and why this is the first time in his career that he feels like he's being himself.

News: Last Thursday, Disney held their Q4 earnings report and fiscal 2020 year end results. The company had 14 billion in revenue, beating expectations. The Disney Parks had the worst loss in the company with a 61% decrease in revenue, resulting in a 1.1 billion dollar loss. Disney estimates the total impact from COVID-19 in 2020 was 7.4 billion overall. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/breaking-disney-parks-experiences-and-products-segment-records-loss-of-1-1-billion-in-q4-2020/ During the 2020 earnings call last week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek dropped the news that they did not think that Disneyland would be open in the fiscal first quarter of 2021. This is confusing some as different online publications are saying this means until March 2021, but the way that Disney has it’s fiscal years setup means that Disneyland will not be open for the rest of 2020. The second fiscal quarter starts in January, 2021. – https://www.micechat.com/275082-disneyland-update-open-and-closed-as-disneyland-faces-a-purple-christmas/ Most of California, including Orange County where Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Knott’s Berry Farm are located have slid back into the purple zone on California’s COVID-19 blueprint. This means that even the smaller amusement parks need to close down again, and indoor dining will not be allowed, with fewer guests allowed inside retail locations. For Downtown Disney, this means a return to outdoor dining only, and longer lines for the retail stores. – https://www.micechat.com/275082-disneyland-update-open-and-closed-as-disneyland-faces-a-purple-christmas/ and https://www.ocregister.com/2020/11/16/disneyland-and-knotts-further-from-reopening-with-orange-countys-slide-into-most-restrictive-covid-19-tier/ Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, presented at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, or IAAPA, Virtual Education Conference. During the presentation, he showed off some positive changes coming to the parks around the world. At Disneyland, Avengers Campus is working toward completion, with the bulk of the additions happening at other parks. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/11/updates-on-new-disney-parks-attractions-entertainment-offer-glimpse-of-exciting-future/ This week, we received a first look at the actual ride vehicle for the new Spider-Man attraction coming to Avenger’s Campus. The new attraction, named “Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure” will be the new e-ticket in the land when it opens. The ride vehicles are enclosed and give the feel of a much smaller Guardian’s gantry lift. The side of the vehicle opens to allow guests to board in a single line facing outward so they can sling webs! – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/16/pics-check-out-the-ride-vehicles-for-the-upcoming-web-slingers-a-spider-man-adventure-in-disneyland/ At the IAAPA Expo, Josh D’Amaro stated that more inclusion projects will be coming to the parks after the Splash Mountain retheming. This is part of the fifth key in Cast Member training that was announced in September. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/josh-damaro-states-there-will-be-more-inclusion-projects-for-disney-parks-starting-with-splash-mountain-retheming/ The holidays have officially arrived at the Disneyland Resort with a number of seasonal shopping and dining options now available. Black Tap has a Thanksgiving Burger, La Brea Bakery has a few different spirits to choose from like the Merry Manhattan, the Tinsel-Tini, a Mistletoe Margarita, the Joyful Daiquiri, and the Jolly Old Fashioned. Earl of Sandwich, California Churro, Wetzel’s Pretzels, and Marceline’s Confectionery also have some festive options. A holiday favorite will not be returning this year. The infamous Disneyland Candy Cane will not be avaliable. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/16/take-a-look-at-the-seasonal-shopping-and-dining-available-at-downtown-disney/ and https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/11/shop-sip-savor-and-celebrate-the-holiday-season-at-downtown-disney-district-at-disneyland-resort/ For merchandise, holiday options are coming to a lot of Downtown Disney shops, the Backlot Premiere Shop, and Buena Vista Street Shops. If you are able, we would encourage a donation to the Toys for Tots boxes outside of World of Disney, since Disney will donate an additional $1 for every toy donated. You can also donate on shopdisney.com/toysfortots. Buena Vista Street has been decorated for a little bit now for the holidays, but that has finally spilled out into the main Downtown Disney District. Decorated Christmas trees have been added to the planters, toy soldiers have been placed, lights and packages have also been scattered about. Some festive holiday banners have been installed by the old AMC theater, and Christmas music fills the air. A Downtown Disney Christmas Tree has also been installed near the esplanade. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/photos-video-christmas-decorations-appear-at-downtown-disney-district-and-buena-vista-street-at-disneyland-resort/ MiceChat noticed some Christmas decorations through the front gates of Disneyland recently, giving guests hope that Main Street might reopen, much like Buena Vista Street. Unfortunately, it looks like the decorations were just setup for some form of production in the park, and have been removed. – https://www.micechat.com/275082-disneyland-update-open-and-closed-as-disneyland-faces-a-purple-christmas/ The former location of the Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disney has received a new Star Wars Trading Post sign. The new sign gives guests a better idea of what the location is, since the previous exterior didn’t explicitly say what the store was. – https://www.micechat.com/275082-disneyland-update-open-and-closed-as-disneyland-faces-a-purple-christmas/ MiceChat posted an aerial update for Disneyland this week. Scaffolding has come down around Snow White, King Arthur Carrousel, and The Haunted Mansion, showing completed, or mostly completed exterior work on these attractions. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway has also been going up at a rapid pace! – https://www.micechat.com/275082-disneyland-update-open-and-closed-as-disneyland-faces-a-purple-christmas/ New Disney Parks Pals Collectibuilds have arrived! Each mystery box contains one of twelve collectibles, with the box being able to fold into an attraction vehicle. For series 1, a Monorail, train, Kilimanjaro Safari truck, Peter Pan’s Flight pirate ship, and Space Mountain rocket ship are the options. The new pals are $9.99 and have been spotted in World of Disney. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/photos-video-new-disney-park-pals-collectabuilds-mystery-boxes-include-character-figure-and-buildable-ride-attraction-vehicles/ Black Tap has come up with another tasty treat, this time themed to Mickey Mouse! The Special Edition Shake features a strawberry shake with a vanilla frosted rim with Mickey Mouse sprinkles topped with a homemade Mickey Mouse shaped crisped rice treat, white and red rock candy, whipped cream, red sprinkles and a cherry on top. The shake costs $24, and is available daily. – https://twitter.com/Disneyland/status/1328387154263805953 Disney posted a preview of the last Minnie the Main Attraction collection this week. The final design is based on fireworks and Disney Castles. Like the previous sets, there will be Minnie ears, mug, pin set, a Loungefly backpack, and a Minnie plush. The final set should be open for MerchPass next month. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/photo-first-look-at-new-nighttime-fireworks-castle-finale-collection-for-minnie-mouse-the-main-attraction-series/ The Disney Holiday Sing Along lineup has been announced. Ryan Seacrest will return as host and will include BTS, Michael Buble, Adam Lambert, and more. Plus, returning favorites Derek and Julianne Hough will also be part of the singalong. The North American touring companies of Frozen, Aladdin and The Lion King will also make an appearance. Disney’s a cappella group, DCappella, will also be joining in on the magical holiday fun. News: At 10am pacific time on Tuesday, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products held a press conference to give and update on the Disney Parks approach to operating during COVID-19. On the call were VPs of Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, WDW Hotels and Resorts, and Patrick Finnegan, the VP of DCA and Downtown Disney. Closing remarks were given by Josh D’Amaro, the Chairman of the division. 8 out of 10 guests feel the safety measures are just right. Disney plans on providing COVID testing in their communities with details to be announced soon. Josh D’Amaro joined from DCA and expressed how important Disneyland is to the economy in CA and how 80,000 jobs rely on the resort. The biggest line was “We are ready, and more importantly… it is time.” – https://www.laughingplace.com/w/articles/2020/09/22/live-blog-disney-parks-and-resorts-update/ When Disneyland does reopen, mobile ordering is going to be expanded, just as it was in Walt Disney World. And, just like in Disney World, it will be the preferred way for guests to order their food while in the parks. Apple Pay and Disney gift cards will also be allowed in the app and the minimum age for mobile ordering will be lowered to 13 years old, down from the previous 18 years old. There is currently no updated list of locations that will offer mobile ordering. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/09/22/disneyland-to-expand-restaurant-mobile-ordering-when-theme-parks-reopen/ More progress seen in the parks in preparation for the reopening of Disneyland. Hand sanitizer stations have appeared all over Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure and crowd signage like “Enter Here” have also been spotted. – https://www.micechat.com/270828-disneyland-update-how-soon-is-very-very-soon/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/09/22/two-major-new-park-additions-show-were-even-closer-to-disneyland-reopening/ The Thinkwell Group released an estimate that Disneyland could maintain social distancing measures at 50% of pre-COVID attendance capacity. This was calculated using the estimates from the Themed Entertainment Association of 500 to 650 per acre. With the 6 feet of distance, that leaves 140 square feet per person, and 200 square feet for groups of 3, Thinkwell estimates. In the end 25 to 30,000 visitors per day could visit and properly distance. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/09/17/disneyland-could-allow-for-social-distancing-at-50-capacity-data-shows/ The likelihood of the trams returning when the parks reopen is pretty slim considering that Walt Disney World has been open for months and the trams have not returned there. So, Disneyland has turned it’s tramway into a pedestrian walkway this past week, installing signage, benches, and trash cans along the route from Mickey and Friends, as well as Pixar Pals parking garages. This isn’t the first time that this has been used or pedestrians, being used on heavy attendance days like New Years Eve. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/09/16/photos-disneyland-prepares-for-reopening-as-park-reservation-signs-and-a-potential-new-walkway-appear/ In another positive sign of possible reopening coming sooner than later, the floral Mickey in front of the Main Street Station has been refreshed. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/09/photos-mickey-entrance-floral-planter-refreshed-at-disneyland-social-distancing-signage-installed-at-disney-california-adventure/ Last week, the Wonderground Gallery was taken over by Star Wars overnight. Rumors spread online that it was a permanent closure of the popular art gallery in Downtown Disney. The new Star Wars Trading post sells a lot of items that were once only available in Galaxy’s Edge. {someone online? Disney} did say that they are looking for an alternate location for the Wonderground Gallery to return to. – https://www.micechat.com/270828-disneyland-update-how-soon-is-very-very-soon/ Star Wars fans that are collecting the various lightsabers from the Star Wars Universe have the opportunity to choose the next saber to be released. The options are Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger from Star Wars Rebels, Cal Kestis from the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game, and Lord Corvax. Head to the link in our show notes to cast your vote now through October 1st. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/09/guests-get-to-vote-for-next-legacy-lightsaber-coming-to-dok-ondars-den-of-antiquities-in-star-wars-galaxys-edge-products-from-the-theme-park-land-now-online-at-shopdisney-coming-to-disney-sprin/ and https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/09/vote-for-the-next-legacy-lightsaber-in-celebration-of-products-direct-from-star-wars-galaxys-edge-coming-to-shopdisney-disney-springs-and-downtown-disney-district/ The Mandalorian will be returning with season 2 at the end of October, but if you want some Baby Yoda, also known as “The Child” in your life before then, you can pick up a new travel blanket that features the little green creature. The blanket folds up in itself and includes a trolley sleeve for easy transport. The Retro Disneyland Minnie Ears are blue sequins for the ears, with the vintage Disneyland lettering in place of the bow. On the band itself is the saying “The Happiest Place on Earth.” They are $29.99, if you can find them at the World of Disney. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/09/22/stop-these-are-the-most-iconic-disneyland-minnie-ears-ever/ Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes celebrated national cheeseburger day on September 17th. We are so excited about the success we have had with our friends from Hardywood Park Craft Brewery! And we celebrate this week with our Hardywood friend (and Mims alum) Scott Apicella! Scott reveals all the latest from Virginia and opens a cooler filled with treats: Cuvee Gold, Farmhouse Pumpkin, Crasseux Grisette, and Prim Looking Stargazer! There is much fun news for us in the beer world this week beginning in The Houston Chronicle’s profile of a a San Antonio company that is taking its bakery-to-brewery model nationwide! We follow that with VinePair showing us that ‘stovepipe’ cans are here because craft beer wants to party, and then The Advocate (Baton Rouge) praises thirty-three breweries that are releasing one collaborative brew for Louisiana Craft Beer Week! Next up is The Marin Independent Journal on craft beer culture lagging in Europe, followed by Eureka Alert having a prehistoric thirst for craft beer. We wind down the week with The Dayton Daily News demonstrating why Warped Wing's beers went globe-trotting on vacation and People Magazine (!) and the news that the famous NY bar Black Tap is serving an over-the-top “Mean Girls” milkshake and it's so fetch! We love your answers to last week’s #caskquiz “what’s your coolest beer gadget? High tech or low!” This week we want to know “what’s your optimal can (or bottle) size for craft beer?” We so love hearing from you! Please send in feedback and beer suggestions by calling us at (919) 502-0280, Tweeting us, following our Instagram or friending us on Untappd, posting on and liking our Facebook page, or emailing us! And please rate & review us in iTunes or Stitcher if you haven’t done so!
