Today on our show, we bring you a story by Bonnie Shor, who we call Blee. Blee has been a student of Writing Class Radio for two years. We love the shit out of her. Listen to what she told us: I took up knitting, Zumba and writing when I turned 60. Eight years later, there's a ball of yarn in my closet, and four unused Zumba classes on my lost dance card. My writing, though, can be found in several anthologies, most recently, Hellokoo Volume 1 Letter A, Loud Coffee Press Magazine, and now Writing Class Radio. For more Blee, check out her Instagram @Bleeshor. Blee's story is called Am I Turning Into My Mother? A question many people can totally relate to on so many levels. On this episode we talk about how Blee so elegantly described her mother and herself. We discuss what makes something universal, the details that drew us in and told us so much about the narrator, and we discuss why the structure she used is so effective. And finally, we talk about endings. This narrator nailed the ending in a huge way. Writing Class Radio is hosted by Allison Langer and Andrea Askowitz. Audio production by Matt Cundill, Evan Surminski, and Aiden Glassey at the Sound Off Media Company. Theme music is by Justina Shandler. There's more writing class on our website including stories we study, editing resources, video classes, writing retreats, and live online classes. Availability in Kafka Streams is hard, especially in the face of any changes. Any change to topic metadata or group membership triggers a rebalance. But Kafka Streams struggles even after this stop-the-world rebalance has finished. According to Apache Kafka® Committer and Confluent Software Engineer Sophie Blee-Goldman, this is because a Streams app will generally have some state associated with a given partition, and to move this state from one consumer instance to another requires rebuilding this state from a special backing topic called a changelog, the source of truth for a partition’s state. Restoring the changelog can take hours, and until the state is ready, Streams can’t do any further processing on that partition. Furthermore, it can’t serve any requests for local state until the local state is “caught up” with the changelog. So scaling out your Streams application results in pretty significant downtime—which is a bummer, especially if the reason for scaling out in the first place was to handle a particularly heavy workload. To solve the stop-the-world rebalance, we have to find a way to safely assign partitions so we can be confident that they’ve been revoked from their previous owner before being given to a new consumer. To solve the scaling out problem in Kafka Streams, we go a step further. When you add a new instance to your Streams application, we won’t immediately assign any stateful partitions to it. Instead, we’ll leave them assigned to their current owner to continue processing and serving queries as usual. During this time, the new instance will start to “warm up” the local state in the background; it starts consuming from the changelog and building up the local state. We then follow a similar pattern as in cooperative rebalancing, and issue a follow-up rebalance. In KIP-441, we call these probing rebalances. Every so often (i.e., 10 minutes by default), we trigger a rebalance. In the member’s subscription metadata that it sends to the group leader, each member encodes the current status of its local state. We use the changelog lag as a measure of how “caught up” a partition is. During a rebalance, only instances that are completely caught up are allowed to own stateful tasks; everything else must first warm up the state. So long as there is some task still warming up on a node, we will “probe” with rebalances until it’s ready.EPISODE LINKSFrom Eager to Smarter in Apache Kafka Consumer RebalancesKIP-429: Kafka Consumer Incremental Rebalance ProtocolKIP-441: Smooth Scaling Out for Kafka StreamsJoin the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Kafka streaming in 10 minutes on Confluent CloudUse 60PDCAST to get an additional $60 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)

The Platform episode one hundred and six features a mix by DJ B-Lee and he brought a guest with him, his uncle Suspence. Since Wisconsin started opening back up, B-Lee has been back spinning in his hometown of Waukesha at Donnie Boys, one of his residencies. With his city and other surrounding Wisconsin cities not having capacity restrictions like Milwaukee, they've been packed every Saturday night hitting capacity. Still trying to get his foot in the door in Milwaukee, his mixes and promo videos have had venues reach out to him noticing his work. He wanted to do a special mix with Suspence who is part owner of Xcite Entertainment Milwaukee. He has captivated audiences in the nightclub setting while also working the event side doing corporate gigs and weddings. His ability to read a room alongside his outgoing personality made him a crowd favorite. Suspence has DJ'd at some of the biggest venues in Milwaukee, Chicago and Miami. His unique mixes, which have been featured on Kiss FM and B-96 in Chicago, set him apart from other DJ's. His hard work in the industry gave him the opportunity to open up for Grammy nominated artist, Tiesto, and other major headliners. Be sure to follow them both on their socials listed in the description and enjoy their latest mix, on The Platform. On this episode of the PRST podcast I sit down with Washington Nationals Head Physical Therapist, Washington Spirit Head Physical Therapist, and Senior Director for INOVA Physical Therapy Centers Dr. Seth Blee (@sethblee) to talk shop about Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR). Seth dives into the underlying principles of PNF and how he relies on our developmental movement sequence to facilitate and restore optimal movement. Additionally, he touches on PNF's utility when performing functional mobilization techniques on his athletes. In regard to BFR, Seth outlines the physiologic mechanisms that take place to allow for muscle growth without excessive muscle breakdown. Furthermore, he explains the programming model behind BFR and how it also serves as a recovery modality. Lastly, Seth touches on his experience working with Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith after his life-threatening leg injury in November of 2018. You can find Alex's story, Project 11, on ESPN's E:60 documentary series. Installed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1921 to commemorate the tercentenary of the landing of the Pilgrims, Cyrus Dallin's statue Massasoit was intended to memorialize the Pokanoket Massasoit (leader) as a welcoming diplomat and participant in the mythical first Thanksgiving. But after the statue's unveiling, Massasoit began to move and proliferate in ways one would not expect of generally stationary monuments tethered to place. The plaster model was donated to the artist's home state of Utah and prominently displayed in the state capitol; half a century later, it was caught up in a surprising case of fraud in the fine arts market. Versions of the statue now stand on Brigham Young University's campus; at an urban intersection in Kansas City, Missouri; and in countless homes around the world in the form of souvenir statuettes. As Lisa Blee, Associate Professor of History at Wake Forest University, and Jean M. O'Brien, Distinguished McKnight University Professor of History at the University of Minnesota, show in Monumental Mobility: The Memory Work of Massasoit (The University of North Carolina Press, 2019), the surprising story of this monumental statue reveals much about the process of creating, commodifying, and reinforcing the historical memory of Indigenous people. Dallin's statue, set alongside the historical memory of the actual Massasoit and his mythic collaboration with the Pilgrims, shows otherwise hidden dimensions of American memorial culture: an elasticity of historical imagination, a tight-knit relationship between consumption and commemoration, and the twin impulses to sanitize and grapple with the meaning of settler-colonialism. Ryan Tripp is adjunct history faculty for the College of Online and Continuing Education at Southern New Hampshire University.

November 21, 1979. Craig, Colorado. After spending the evening at a dance, 15-year old Marie Blee heads to a party at a mobile home park, but never returns home. Two days later, Marie's parents receive an anonymous phone call demanding a $5,000 ransom for her return. The caller is soon revealed to be 18-year old Monty Doolin, who drove Marie to the party, but he denies any involvement in her disappearance. Over the next few decades, investigators would receive contradictory accounts from several eyewitnesses about what might have happened to Marie on the night she went missing. They eventually name three persons of interest, but Marie is never found. Today’s word of the day is sublimate, S-U-B-L-I-M-A-T-E Sublimate is a verb that means to direct the expression of a desire or an impulse to a more socially acceptable one. When a person sublimates a base impulse for something more acceptable, you could say they are elevating their decorum. So it makes sense that the Latin word sublimis (soo BLEE mees) means elevated or lofty. Mr. Ross can really be annoying with his elaborate lunch demands. So I usually sublimate my desire to throw his salad all over his suit into finishing his order as quickly as possible. Sublimate is spelled S-U-B-L-I-M-A-T-E.

In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters
This week at In The Past Lane, the history podcast, I speak with historian Linda Gordon about her new book, The Second Coming of the KKK: The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s and the American Political Tradition (Liveright, 2018). Most Americans are familiar with the first version of the KKK, the one that was founded in 1866, right after the Civil War, in order to uphold white supremacy in the South through campaigns of terrorist violence. Once the Jim Crow system of racial oppression was in place by the 1890s, the KKK faded away. But a new KKK emerged in 1915, inspired in part by the debut of, “The Birth of A Nation,” a deeply racist film that hailed the KKK as the savior of the white South. As Linda Gordon explains, this KKK was different from the original in that it was national in scope and it expanded its message of hate to target, in addition to African Americans, Jews, Catholics, and immigrants. It also promoted itself as a legitimate patriotic organization and focused its efforts on mobilizing political power. It’s a fascinating conversation and one – in light of Charlottesville and the emergence of the Alt-Right – incredibly relevant to 2018. Among the many things discussed in this episode: What was the original Ku Klux Klan that emerged in the wake of the Civil War? Why did a second version of the KKK arise in 1915 and how did it differ from the original? How the KKK broadened its message of hate to target not only blacks, but also Jews, Catholics, and immigrants. Why were so many women drawn to the KKK in the 1920s? How evangelical ministers played a key role in boosting KKK membership to more than 4 million by 1927. How the KKK in the 1920s presented itself as just another patriotic fraternal society and not a hate group. How the KKK was a vast business that raked in more than $25 million a year at its peak. How the climate of intolerance in the 1920s has many similarities with contemporary America. Referencias: Vardakas KZ y colaboradores. Joel Busher is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (CTPSR), Coventry University. His research examines, 1) the social ecology of political violence and anti-outsider politics, and 2) the implementation of counter-terrorism policy and its societal impacts. His work centres on the micro- and meso-level processes of collective action – the rituals that shape and comprise our everyday lives; the cognitive and moral orders that we make, break and patch together again; and the emotional rules and rhythms of our lives – and how these give rise to, exacerbate or mitigate divisive social relations. In his work on anti-minority mobilisations he addresses questions about how and why people become involved in anti-minority protest, and what sustains, energises or undermines such protests. His book, The Making of Anti-Muslim Protest: Grassroots Activism in the English Defence League (Routledge) was joint winner of the British Sociological Association’s Philip Abrams Memorial Prize, 2016. His other current research interests include: the processes of interactive escalation, non-escalation and de-escalation between movements, counter-movements and the state; the implementation of the Prevent duty in schools and colleges in England and Wales; and how Brexit is playing out in British ‘expat’ communities living in Spain. This episode of Humanities Viewpoints, our first for 2015, is about Public History. Academics engaging and working with public audiences is getting a good deal of attention. The annual meeting of the American Historical Association earlier this month included a panel session called, “Being a Public Intellectual: Historians and the Public.” Also, just this past December, the National Endowment for the Humanities announced the creation of their new “Public Scholar Grant Program” that encourages the publication of nonfiction books that apply serious humanities scholarship to subjects of general interest and appeal. Dr. Lisa Blee, Assistant Professor of History at Wake Forest University, joins me today to talk about Public History, the background of the field, as well as her definition and how it applies to her teaching.blee23 Dr. Blee will also talk a bit about the upcoming exhibition, Release: From Stigma to Acceptance. This exhibition features the words and art of formerly incarcerated offenders and was a collaboration between Project Re-entry program graduates, Wake Forest University students in Dr. Blee’s course Issues in Public History (HST 367), and Project Re-entry coordinators during the Fall 2014 semester. The exhibition opens this Saturday, January 17th at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art with an opening reception from 1-3pm. Enjoy refreshments and music while learning about the history of incarceration, stories of re-entry, and the background of the exhibit. Lisa Blee grew up in Arizona, attended college in Portland, Oregon, and received her PhD at the University of Minnesota. She joined the Wake Forest faculty in 2009 and teaches courses in the U.S. West, Native American history, environmental thought, and public history. Her research interest is in historical memory and late-nineteenth and twentieth century Pacific Northwest Indigenous history. Her first book is Framing Chief Leschi: Narratives and the Politics of Historical Justice (2014, University of North Carolina Press). I hope you enjoy our conversation.
Prof. Kathleen Blee has written several books about racism and the Ku Klux Klan. Blee looks in particular at ways the KKK was able to infiltrate mainstream America in the 1920s, by focusing its membership efforts on moderates, not extremists—a strategy repeated by the Nazis shortly thereafter.
