It's "Cricket Week" at Brentwood CC, with lots going on, culminating in the visit of the PCA England Masters on Friday (19th July). During a match between Brentwood and a Smile Travel Group XI, I caught up with Essex and England legend John Lever as we watched the game along with Don Topley. In a chat dripping with nostalgia, we recall John's England debut in Delhi in 1976, taking 10-70 and Don tells us the story of how in 1984, he was plucked from selling scorecards at Lord's to being put on the pitch and very nearly taking a catch on the boundary to dismiss Malcom Marshall off the bowling of Bob Willis! We talk about how much has changed in the game since the 1970s and 80s and later on, we are joined by Graeme Walker from Smile Group Travel, who do so much for the game of cricket and organise excellent sporting tours. In this week's episode we meet the Head of Heritage and Collections at the MCC, Neil Robinson. We begin by talking about how, where and when Neil began his affiliation with the game of cricket. Specifically, it was the 1981 Ashes and Bob Willis' phenomenal last day performance in the Headingley Test.Yorkshire was the nearest first class county to him in the North East so he became a fan of the club. He has followed Durham's progression as a first class county.Neil then tells us a little bit about his journey to the position that he currently holds. From an initial period as a library student in 2004 he managed to get a permanent job in 2006. He became the Head of Heritage and Collections in 2019.The Museum is not as old as the Lords cricket ground. In fact, it was officially opened in 1953 but the collections do go back much further. Neil outlines the details of how the museum and collections have grown over the past 150 years.Neil outlines what has happened to the museum in the time he has been there. Principally, this has been the development of a proper cataloguing system so that museum staff and those researching aspects of the game can search and find material they can use to tell the story of the game of cricket through the work of this hugely influential institution. He then gives us a brief 'virtual' guide to the museum itself.Recent developments in cricket have led some to question the equality and diversity in the history of the game. Neil describes the way in which the museum's approach to telling cricket history has thrown a light on some of the issues raised in the ICEC Report of 2023.To finish the episode, Neil talks about some of the items in the collection that he regards as significant and important finishing with the story of the Ashes urn.The museum website, where you can find details of how you can visit the museum and / or use it for research:https://www.lords.org/lords/conferences-and-events/museumFor those who are interested in learning a little more about Neil and his work, you can read a transcribed interview with him here:https://www.cricketcountry.com/articles/interview-neil-robinson-the-library-and-research-manager-at-lords-293870/Back in 2020 during lock-down, Neil was a guest on the wonderful Oborne and Heller on Cricket Podcast. We are all aware of the supply chain issues our industry has faced. Beginning with electronic components, it has spread to so many other types of parts are industry relies on. Fortunately, it looks like we are beginning to come out the other end of the supply chain shortage. But the supply chain problems have further spread to the labor market. If you are in a position to hire people for your company, you know firsthand how difficult that process can be today. Adding to the level of labor acquisition difficulties is the great “Silver Tsunami,” otherwise known as the great retirement. As mentioned on Reliability Matters episode 130, the fact is, Baby Boomers are entering retirement in greater numbers. According to government data, from now until 2030, 10,000 boomers will hit retirement age each day. Millions will begin to officially retire. Some of these retirees are designated subject matter experts within their companies. Not only are people retiring, they are taking with them a vault of valuable knowledge. This has created an even larger demand for consultants within our industry. I've had several industry consultants on my show over the last few years, including today's guest: legendary industry consultant, Bob Willis. If you've been in this industry longer than 18 seconds, there's a good chance you've at least heard his name. If you've been in this industry for virtually any length of time, there's a good chance you've seen his videos, read his books, or watched him present at numerous industry conferences and symposiums. If I reviewed Bob's complete professional biography, it would take an entire episode. During our conversation, we discussed Bob's newest book, Robotic Soldering Inspection and Defect Guide. Anyone who makes a donation to Bob's chosen charity will receive a download of his book as well as access to Bob's complete book collection: Robotic Soldering Inspection and Defect Guide Pin in Hole Intrusive Reflow Desing Assembly & Defect Guide Package On Package Assembly Inspection & Quality Control Solder Paste Print Inspection & Defect Guide Lead-Free Defect Guide 3 Conformal Coating Inspection & Defect Guide QFN LGA Assembly Inspection & Defect Guide PCB Surface Finishes Inspection & Defect Guide Cleaning & Contamination Defect Guide Click the following link for more information: https://www.justgiving.com/page/bob-willis-roboticsolderingbook

Bob Willis may not be a Veteran but his heart beats passionately for those who have served. He has organized ten living history events that allow Veterans to share first hand stories with the rest of us. The whole endeavor began when Bob and his boys watched the “Band of Brothers” series. His boys asked if it would be possible to meet some of the surviving members of Easy Company. When an opportunity came up to attend an Easy Company reunion in Norfolk, Bob and his boys jumped at the chance. Bob gave gifts to each of the 35 surviving members. When asked how they could return the favor, Willis hosted ten of them for a dinner in his hometown of Kingston, New York. The “God and Country Veterans Living History Event” was born. This year will be the 10th event that Willis has organized. The event always features an amazing group of Veterans who tell their stories during the daylong conference and closing dinner. This year's events will feature Veterans from World War II on up to the Afghanistan war. He tries to focus on combat Veterans but occasionally will feature others who have unique stories like Irene Perbal, a member of the Dutch Resistance. All proceeds from the event benefit the Hudson Valley National Center for Veteran Integration. He also emphasizes the importance of sharing these stories with younger generations. Bob takes conference participants also pay visits to the local schools to share their stories. Bob and I share our thoughts on the importance of documenting these stories so they can be shared and remembered. We all have Veterans in our community that are literally “living history”. TAKEAWAY: “I had a choice. I didn't have to go to war. All those men and women who fought wars before me gave me that choice.”

If you think about the 1981 Ashes series, what comes to your mind?Ian Botham, of course; Bob Willis, almost certainly; Mike Brearley, perhaps. But Paul Parker? Probably not.All the same, Paul, an attacking batsman and a thrilling fielder for Sussex and latterly Durham, a player good enough to score over 19,000 first-class runs and take part in two winning one-day finals at Lord's in 1978 and 1986, made his Test debut in the final match of that unforgettable series, at The Oval. He'd set his heart on playing for England, this was his chance – and, as it turned out, his only chance. This is Paul Parker's story of a momentous week in his life, one which had profound repercussions for his career…
