Episode 2116 - On this Friday's show, Dr. Ben Bocchicchio joins Vinnie Tortorich to talk about "The Colorado Experiment", Nautilus machines, muscle building for everyone, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2022/06/colorado-experiment-bocchicchio-episode-2116/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS THE COLORADO EXPERIMENT Vinnie and Dr. Ben discuss part of the history of the Nautilus brand of weight-training machines. They discuss what The Colorado Experiment was, and how it increased awareness of what gains could be achieved by isolating muscle groups. Both Vinnie and Dr. Ben leaned heavily on Nautilus for training. They go on to discuss the real benefits of slow resistance and isolating muscle groups. Vinnie tells a brief story of a nickname he earned in college. RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE BENEFITS OF MUSCLE GAIN Vinnie asks Dr. Ben his opinion on the best training regimen. Dr. Ben recommends "working hard, not working a lot". The muscle system is the most potent stimulator for fat burning and brain health. This works whether you have a little to lose, a lot to lose, or have challenges like diabetes. Muscle training can benefit everyone. They discuss why it's best to start with large muscle groups and finish with smaller muscle groups. Vinnie and Dr. Ben share their opinions about supplements and which to avoid. Unfortunately, dangerous types of supplements and drugs have caused death in young bodybuilders. PURCHASE BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE The documentary launched this week, January 11! Order it TODAY! Dr. Ben Bocchicchio has been an advocate of slow strength training and a low-carb diet since 1973. He was on the leading edge of Nautilus training and had a professional relationship with Arthur Jones as the world became familiar with the exercise machines Jones called "the thinking man's barbell". In this interview Dr. Ben Bo is fresh off giving a lecture at the Low Carb USA conference in San Diego. Topics discussed include the anti-inflammatory effects of slow resistance training and an in-depth look at how a low-carbohydrate diet contributes to health and longevity.
Dr. Ben Bocchicchio or Dr. Ben, as he prefers to be called, is a national leader in exercise science, fitness and health for 40 years. He's built his success by combining science with effective body conditioning and technology to produce optimum health, fitness, rehabilitation and weight loss for every body type. His focus is recalibrating the body's metabolism using slow resistance training with significant weights during two 20 minute a week workouts. It's a revolutionary way to think about exercise, one which he has conducted and published research on to back up his claims. According to his most recent research, one of these 20 minute workouts is equal to 3.5 hours of cardio work. As the creator of slow resistance training in 1974, a mainstream fitness technique used by trainers nationwide, Dr. Ben has been featured or sourced in more than 200 books, articles, medical journals and studies. A highly sought-after fitness consultant, Dr. Ben has advised on The U.S. Olympic Committee, The National Football League, Major League Baseball, World Team Tennis, numerous major college athletic programs and served as the training program developer for Total Gym™. His client roster includes world-class athletes, A-list celebrities and some of the industry's top trainers -- his reach extending to tens of thousands of clients nationwide. Also the author of 15 Minutes to FITNESS: Dr. Ben's SMaRT Plan for Diet and Total Health. Bocchicchio has over 40 years of experience in the fitness and health industry. He is a sought-after expert whose practical methods for achieving optimal health combine science with effective body conditioning and technology for top results in weight loss, and fitness. Dr. Bocchicchio was the pioneer developer of slow resistance training, a fitness technique that literally revolutionized the way people exercise. Bocchicchio's book, Fifteen Minutes to Fitness: Dr. Ben's Smart Plan for Diet and Total Health, outlines a sensible and rational approach to diet and exercise. Bocchicchio's method produces significant results by working with physiology and it is a must-read for fitness and health professionals. Bocchicchio discusses his early years as a serious athlete and the fitness experts who influenced his journey. He talks about the history of health and fitness and the struggle to bring good fitness ideas into mainstream consciousness. The fitness guru discusses the development of his celebrated slow resistance training techniques known as ‘smart training.' He describes his program as high intensity and it has garnered successful results for many of his clients and followers, from elite athletes to the average health-conscious person. As he details, his program requires just two 15-minute sessions per week to see a real impact on health and energy, as well as increase of metabolism. Bocchicchio provides insight on his thoughts behind the development of the smart training techniques. Bocchicchio states that he wanted to look at how our earlier ways of living impacted good health. He talks about how early humans did not have carbohydrates but had to exist on fish and fowl that required humans to hunt, which was an intensive workout. Bocchicchio provides some detailed information on insulin resistance and the negative impact of carbohydrates, and how our bodies truly don't need them. He describes the process of fat cell storage, and how the prevalence of sugar in so many of our foods is leading to health problems. Essentially, Dr. Bocchicchio states that the consumption of carbohydrates is akin to ingesting insulin. And while a full diet and exercise plan is the best option, simply cutting carbohydrates is one step that everyone can take for their health. And Bocchicchio goes in-depth about the methods our bodies use to burn fat and sugar, and how fasting can provide an opportunity for the body to initiate an intensive energy burning process. When we eat, as Bocchicchio states, we are sending a metabolic signal to our bodies to store energy, and when we fast we are telling our bodies to burn energy. He outlines how intermittent fasting can be an option for people who want to stimulate their burn. Bocchicchio details the many types of exercise and workout plans that people invest their time into, and he stresses the importance of high-intensity exercise because it releases adrenaline, which in turn forces the body to release stored fat. He explains that steady state cardio exercise is good for overall health but that it will not change one's metabolic status or make the body leaner. He states that in order to achieve the best results for metabolic purposes, essentially pushing the body to burn more energy, that we must work harder at a high-intensity level, which can only be done in short blocks of time due to the intensity it requires. The diet and fitness expert delivers an intensive overview of other factors that drive insulin resistance and the dangers of sugar loading. He talks about exercise techniques and gives specific examples of methods that everyone can use to improve their exercise regimens and general health. He discusses safe, productive, and intermittent exercising and the benefits of keeping a regular routine. Bocchicchio explains his personal workout routine and the advantages of working each set of muscles to failure, thus pushing the workout to a high-intensity level that maximizes the metabolic benefits. And he wraps up his thorough analysis of health and fitness by discussing some of his partnerships with various fitness groups and brands, as well as the tools one can use to exercise efficiently and intensely, for optimum health.
The morning of November 11, 2016 began like any other Friday morning for Charla Bocchicchio. She woke up to her alarm going off and was ready to get out of bed for an early morning yoga practice to kick off her weekend. And just like the rest of us, she grabbed her phone to see what she might have missed during the sleeping hours of the night. But unlike the rest of us, she found a throng of missed calls and text messages from her ex-husband, Chris Cochran, including a daunting notification: “Cassidy Aspen Cochran was born June 22, 1994.” Without hesitating Bocchicchio quickly called Cochran to hear the thing every parent dreads to hear; “She’s gone, Cassidy’s gone, she’s dead.” Cassidy, only 22 years old, had passed away of an opioid overdose. High does of fentanyl had been found in her system by the medicinal examiner. Cassidy and her boyfriend Frank thought they were taking heroin, but it ended up being something more lethal. Across the nation, fentanyl is now the fifth most common drug involved in overdose deaths. Counterfeit pills are common on the street, but with fentanyl, one person may take a fake pill and use it and the next person make take the pill and die almost instantly. In Cassidy’s case, according to the medical examiner, she unknowingly injected a lethal dose of it. In 2016, more Americans died of drug overdose than died in the Vietnam War. Two-thirds of those overdose deaths were from opioids. The opioid addiction is on the rise and is being referred to as an epidemic, but yet it has still not been declared a public health crisis by the Utah Legislature. Joining us today is Cassidy’s mother Charla Bocchicchio to help spread awareness about the opioid epidemic by sharing Cassidy’s story.
