Episode #206 In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community: Are there common strategies that help to avoid the common pitfalls of Ramadan, like late night eating, overeating, or accidentally doing OMAD for too long and slowing down the metabolic rate? [01:07] Concerns about off-label use of GLP-1s. Some medical professionals seem to be prescribing GLP-1 medications for anti-aging/longevity purposes in people who aren't overweight or diabetic. What do you think about the trend of “microdosing” GLP-1s as a preventative health measure? [02:36] Are there further short and long-term side effects of GLP-1s coming to light? [06:36] Are there ethical concerns around supply issues with GLP-1s due to increased demand from off-label use? [ 10:12] Are there bioethical concerns about GLP-1s that doctors should be discussing with patients? [12:03] Can you address how people with Type 1 diabetes can develop insulin resistance similar to those with Type 2, sometimes referred to as ‘double diabetes'? [16:21] How concerning is an elevated Lp(a) and how can you lower it? [20:47] Do you know of research or trials with fasting to reduce prostate size?  [26:28] Can someone who is considering kidney donation fast/fat fast? [29:08] I'm seeing many reputable sources saying that the claims against seed oils aren't actually based in the science. I'm curious whether Dr. Fung's opinion has evolved on this? Thank you for joining us for another episode of the Low Carb MD Podcast. Dr. Mary Bowden is an otolaryngologist and sleep medicine specialist in Houston, Texas, who treated over 6,000 COVID patients during the pandemic. Her vast experience prompted her to become a fierce advocate for early treatment. After the FDA spread misinformation about ivermectin, she and Drs. Paul Marik and Robert Apter successfully sued them, forcing the agency to delete several misleading social media posts and web pages. Houston was ground zero for the COVID-19 shot mandates, and Dr. Bowden was an early outspoken critic. The first hospital in the country to implement mandates, Houston Methodist, suspended her privileges and reported her to the Texas Medical Board in response to her tweeting, “Vaccine mandates are wrong.” The ensuing attacks prompted her to fight back, and she founded a nonprofit, Americans for Health Freedom, whose foundational project is to enlist politicians and other doctors to call for the COVID shots to be pulled off the market.  In this episode, Drs. Brian, Tro, and Mary talk about… (00:00) Intro (03:23) The governmental attack on effective, affordable treatments for Covid during the vaccine rollout (11:23) The data supporting the usage of Ivermectin as a safe and effective treatment for Covid (13:47) The lawsuit filed by Dr. Bowden and other doctors against the FDA for interfering with their ability to practice medicine by overstepping their authority and violating the Administrative Procedure Act (17:42) Why Dr. Bowden decided she had to sue the FDA (27:02) Medical ethics, speaking out for the truth, and standing up to corruption (35:59) The quality of research for the safety of various vaccines and why we need a higher standard (41:59) The suppression of effective early treatment options and the massive promotion of  vaccines (48:15) How Drs. It IS Possible To Manage Type 1 Diabetes Safely: Ep 121

LowCarbUSA Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2024 81:45

In this powerful episode of the LowCarbUSA podcast, Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine sit down with Beth McNally and Matt Miernik, the couple behind T1D Nutrition, to discuss their journey with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the transformative role of nutrition in managing the condition. Their journey began in 2015 when their son Lachlan was diagnosed with T1D at age 9. After months of frustration with conventional high-carb, insulin-heavy treatments, they adopted a very low-carb diet, which dramatically improved Lachlan's blood glucose stability and brought his A1C levels into the normal range. Now, at 18, Lachlan is a thriving athlete, and Beth and Matt are dedicated to sharing the benefits of therapeutic carbohydrate reduction with others facing similar challenges. A central theme of the conversation is the recently published Position Paper by The SMHP on therapeutic carbohydrate reduction for type 1 diabetes, to which Beth, Matt, and a team of experts have made significant contributions. This paper will revolutionize T1D management by advocating for therapeutic carbohydrate reduction as a viable, evidence-based option. It calls for healthcare providers to support patients choosing this approach and underscores the importance of continued research and education on low-carb nutritional strategies. Beth expresses her enthusiasm for the Position Paper, noting its potential to challenge current T1D care practices. With only about 17% of youth and 21% of adults meeting the American Diabetes Association's A1C target of 7.0, this paper could be a game-changer, providing clinicians with new guidelines and resources to enhance patient outcomes. It advocates for open access and support for those exploring low-carb diets as a therapeutic intervention, signaling a much-needed shift in mindset. Throughout the episode, Beth and Matt stress how this Position Paper will empower both patients and clinicians, offering a solid foundation for discussing low-carb options within healthcare teams and integrating evidence-backed guidelines into mainstream T1D care. They encourage families to share the Position Paper with their doctors, fostering more comprehensive and supportive care. The couple also reflects on their involvement in the January 2024 LowCarbUSA Boca Raton Symposium for Metabolic Health, which featured a dedicated Type 1 Day. This event assembled international experts in T1D management, including Dr. Ian Lake, Dr. Suzanne Schneider, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Belinda Lennerz, and Dr. Robert Cywes, who shared innovative insights into how nutrition can stabilize blood glucose levels and improve the quality of life for those with T1D. These presentations set the stage for the Position Paper and underscored the need for a low-carb approach to gain wider recognition and support within the medical community. Matt offers additional insights into why therapeutic carbohydrate reduction is so effective, explaining how reducing carbohydrate intake decreases insulin dependency, leading to more stable blood glucose levels. He compares it to "removing logs from a fire," minimizing the blood glucose fluctuations that make T1D so difficult to manage. This Position Paper will address these scientific principles, equipping clinicians with the knowledge and tools to guide their patients more effectively. Matt also discusses the phenomenon of "double diabetes," a condition where individuals with type 1 diabetes develop insulin resistance, resembling type 2 diabetes. He explains how the conventional high-carb diet paired with large insulin doses can lead to this dangerous overlap, increasing health risks and complications. By adopting a low-carb approach, insulin needs are minimized, reducing the chances of developing double diabetes and supporting better metabolic health in people with T1D. Doug and Pam share how eye-opening the Type 1 Day event was for them and other attendees, with many healthcare professionals admitting they gained more insight into T1D management in one day than they had in their entire careers.  Click here to listen and discover the latest advancements in therapeutic carbohydrate reduction. Additionally, LowCarbUSA® has released all the Dedicated Type 1 Diabetes Workshop & Presenter videos from the recent LCUSA & SMHP Symposium for Metabolic Health, held in January. (2:30) He explains exactly how his protocol works. The cholesterol that you eat passes through you; however, the cholesterol that travels through your blood is produced by your liver. (7:00) Your body tries to keep a level of homeostasis. There are various opinions regarding cholesterol, but doctors are often required to prescribe statins. (10:00) Dave refers to Nick Norwitz and sample cholesterol levels. They discuss the term “settled science”. (16:00) Scientists should always be prepared to challenge their hypotheses. (19:15) Science depends on replication to confirm. You can donate to help fund the studies: is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, so your donation is tax-deductible. The conference Dave is presenting in Las Vegas in March this year is the Collaborative Science Conference at . His current studies have been entirely grass-roots funding. Nick Norwitz's Oreo Study They launch into “the Oreo study”. (30:00) Nick Norwitz compared what would happen to his cholesterol if he pitted Oreos vs Statins. What was it about the Oreos that made LDL drop? How does an LMHR control the higher cholesterol? Data was gathered by Dr. Tro Kalayjian's team using some if his LMHR patients. The studies highlight the cholesterol conundrum. Vinnie asks Dave about a second study called “the Twin Study." (48:30) The finding claimed the benefits of a vegan diet, but the standards used are questionable. Dave is working on a documentary with the team that made “Fat Fiction.” (53:00) There are a lot of key moments captured in it, as well as a lot of frustrating stories because of the misunderstandings around high LDL. I am delighted to have my friend and colleague, Dr. Tro Kalayjian, back on the podcast today! He was with me once before for episode 54.  Dr. Tro has a background in internal and obesity medicine and is a founding member of the Society for Metabolic Health Practitioners. He managed to lose more than 150 pounds by challenging conventional medical advice.  In our discussion today, we dive into the impact of food addiction and how our current medical framework has compounded the difficulties of so many patients. We explore the limitations of the calories in calories out model and explain why the term binge eating does not adequately describe food addiction. We go into the role of macronutrients and discuss surgical interventions and medications for food addictions, highlighting the need for patient autonomy and shared decision-making. We also scrutinize the influence of institutions like the CDC, FDA, and insurance companies on how physicians and other healthcare practitioners practice medicine and help their patients manage hunger cravings, social interactions, emotions, and more.  Dr. Tro's dedication to empowering practitioners to become strong patient advocates and oppose the conventional medical paradigm shines through in this impactful and thought-provoking episode. I truly admire him for his commitment to challenging traditional medical protocols!  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why should binge eating be called food addiction? How to address a food addiction proactively How most physicians and healthcare practitioners have failed people with food addictions The issue with surgical interventions and medications  What can physicians and healthcare practitioners do to build insight into addicted patients? Dr. Tro shares his take on shared decision-making and patient autonomy regarding flu shots Why licensed healthcare providers should be obliged to have continuing education How the CDC, FDA, medical organizations, and insurance companies have influenced the way that physicians and healthcare providers help their patients The problem with central planners and their followers  Why does a low-carb bias still exist within the medical community? (21:40) A lot of what they have learned has been on their own and through the current low-carb experts like Dr. Tro Kalayjian. (25:00) The group also discusses some of the newest challenges, like worsening iron deficiency in patients. They chat about how processed foods are making us sicker; however, people still believe if the package says "whole grains", it's good for you. [libsyn_podcast id=24590337] PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS END YOUR CARB CONFUSION Vinnie welcomes Dr. Eric Westman back to the show and asks him about the Duke Keto Medical Clinic. (1:15) Keto is shifting your body to fat-burning and there are so many benefits to it; Eric gives an example. (8:00) Eating a keto diet doesn't have to be expensive; there are ways to find deals on meat purchases. Many people find that they end up eating less food because they are more satisfied. Vinnie chats about his interest in building lean muscle mass when he was younger and noticed that bodybuilders would get "cut" by eating protein and fat, not carbs. (15:30) Vinnie then asks Eric what nutrition training was like when he was in medical school and how it's progressed. (17:00) Both men agree that Dr. Stephen Phinney (of Virta Health) has been a huge influence on what they know about a ketogenic way of eating. The conversation turns to fat as fuel for long distances and some of the current successful athletes doing it. (21:30) Even though there are many examples of these athletes, there is still so much doubt that it's even "possible". Vinnie asks Eric why there are so many dietitians and other health and science professionals resistant to doing further studies and promoting keto as a solution. (30:50) NIH is still stuck on CICO (calories in, calories out), even though it's been proven it doesn't work and is not sustainable. Eric mentions that funding is a big issue. Ending carb confusion is the goal. Vinnie and Eric agree that there is no diabetes in a world without carbs. (35:15) They then talk about sugar addiction needs to be looked at seriously. (40:45) The chat about autoimmune conditions and how they are affected by carbs. Big Food companies hire scientists to formulate food to create addictions to them so you'll be a repeat customer. Eric mentions "", which is an online membership where you can get coached in a low-carb lifestyle. Vinnie then asks Eric to discuss his book, "", written by him, Dr. Amy Berger, and others, and it has a cookbook that provides even more options. Vinnie and Eric have a lot to say about Dr. Tro Kalayjian and how his approach to patients is making great strides in actually healing people. (1:03:50) Vinnie thanks Dr. Westman for his participation in both FAT documentaries because they are helping save lives!
