Wormhole techno from a DJ you need to know. KYRUH is a high-impact specialist forced in the crucible of modern NYC's notable spaces, including WIRE, Dweller and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Their sound is that of a DJ skilled at applying waves of pressure without requiring shortcuts through obvious terrain, adept at hammering it without defaulting to speed alone. After years burning a hole through the American underground, 2024 is proving to be a tipping point. KYRUH's appearance on Kelela remix compilation RAVE:N in early spring lit the touchpaper for a run of gritty productions and increasingly prominent slots across North America and Europe. The tracklist for their RA Podcast goes deep, accommodating contemporary producers like x3butterfly and Faster Horses alongside veterans Lady Starlight, Femanyst, House of God resident Paul Damage Bailey and underrated Swedish ripper Tobias Von Hoftsen. To those still wondering where to find 'proper techno' in 2024: look no further. @kyruhx Read more at ra.co/podcast/945
Relaxer is the project of Daniel Martin-McCormick, fka Ital, member of Black Eyes & Gaze, ex-Mi Ami, Halal & Relaxer, Sleeper Cell, Interplanetary Prophets, and more. Rooted in the US punk/noise underground of the late '90s and early 2000s, Martin-McCormick's music embodies a sensual, visceral edge that reflects and extends that legacy. His hardware live sets, honed over a decade of tours, are exhilarating, white knuckle rides, while his DJ sets fluidly cross genres and eras with a cathartic sense of play. He's been a repeat performer at Berghain (where the Relaxer project made its live debut), De School, Unsound, Nowadays and many others. On albums "Concealer" (Planet Mu), "Coconut Grove" (Avenue 66) and "Hedonic Fatigue" (Climate of Fear), his productions stretch out, weaving strands of wormhole techno, minimal, noise, UK hardcore continuum and fractured ambient into a rippling, mesmeric tapestry. Recent club-focused EPs "Licking" and "Candy" (Lovers Rock Recordings) sharpen the blade, amping up his music's animialstic snarl and erotic undertones. Following his recent composition studies with Morton Subotnick, Relaxer's music has evolved a new modality: alongside his club works there have been concerts of long form durational works featuring spoken word and richly spatialized sound design. His debut performance in this new style was a standout at Sustain-Release Year Seven. These works were released in the Summer of 2022 as "Force Field: A Guide for the Perplexed" on Club Night Club. "In Softening Air," the follow up, is out on Lovers Rock Recordings April 1st. Behind the scenes, Martin-McCormick has been a consistent force shaping the US underground. He is the co-founder of Dripping camping festival and NY-based event series. He was a key member of Sustain-Release from its inception and co-director from 2017-2021, founded the labels Lovers Rock Recordings & Climate of Fear, was one of the first residents at Bossa Nova Civic Club. He currently holds residencies at The Lot Radio and Mansions.https://relaxerelaxer.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/relaxerrelaxerhttps://www.dripping.fyiWe also requested Daniel to share with us some of his favorite things.Catch them all in our newsletter: https://putf.substack.com/The PUTF show is an interview series, dedicated to showcasing inspiring creatives from the PUTF community and beyond. For this edition of The Bunker Podcast we're releasing @otodojo's live set from their album release party at The Bunker in April. artist video explanation accompaniment: youtu.be/h-xMUetPiTg?si=9qj-4DNHj2dHUBtT artist statement: In February 2023 I focused on developing a new live set for my debut with @thebunkerny for an album release, named one of the best releases of 2023 by @mixmag-1. I trained the set with performances at Bossa Nova Civic Club with Perfect Party Look Book and at Forest City Lodge with Microtones in Ithaca. Maybe describing this can help you process some live set ideas. My previous approach to delivering this material live (originally at The Long Count Cycle, then at Technically Yeah) was using stems as a bedrock and improvisation on top. Even though this worked fine, it got a bit stale for me and I wanted to be as satisfied as a listener when a groove sets in. So I decided to go fully based on MIDI information and instruments, with an added challenge that my CPU can't take too much of a load, so I needed to make sure I disabled certain instruments before bringing others in. A disclaimer is that I am not fully endorsing all of the equipment in this list, there are some caveats that I'm happy to discuss. In Ableton I created custom instruments through stock plugins like operator, collision, wavetable - these instruments are divided into ones I cycle through and ones that are constant throughout the set. The constant ones exist in instrument racks and are freely interchangeable through chains - all of the parameters are mapped to the same knobs on my Novation Launch Control XL enabling me to wash through several instruments running varying sounds. I also have stored macro variations for those instruments in case I need some sound immediately without menu diving (like 1/16 note hi hats). The cycled instruments instruments are mostly from my tracks in Amphibious / Aural Spirits that are all controlled by four channels on my Xone K1. Initially I tried using Tip by K-Devices and Map-8 to disable a swath of devices (thanks One Child Policy for the tip!). Yet I found that the CPU load was comparable with just leaving the devices on and simply stopping clips. This made for a much better workflow. I slowly progress through the cycled instruments while improvising with the constant instruments and the main drums / accenting discussed below. My iPad is running Werkbench by Karl Scholz @karlalamusic, a sequencer sampler app that can easily form interesting polyrhythms and is great for anything sample-related, like live accenting, bass lines, drums, etc. For the main drums I didn't want to be too focused on sequencing as it takes up a lot of time, so I just wanted to scroll through patterns that I generate beforehand. I opted to use a modified version of Instant Haus by @alexkid which stores drum patterns for four-five instruments. Modifying this was a bit challenging as it is difficult to determine what kind of patterns I think can stay interesting over an hour time period. This is playing Smackos 808 Simulator by @legowelt-official as well as other custom drum instruments. For acid lines I am using a Roland TB03 on lend from Indy Nyles and sequencing the 303 with Sting by Iftah Gabbai as well as his Microtuner device coupled with note echos (I believe this is the most CPU intensive part of the set).I am using Ableton Push as a means to do miscellaneous control and Jaw Harp / Mic for some added organic-ness. I am running all of this through an Apollo Twin Duo and Allen & Heath Xone 96 at the club.
QRTR is an electronic music producer and DJ based in Brooklyn, NY.Brooklyn's Meagan Rodriguez, aka QRTR, learned how to use CDJs in a smoky discotèca an hour before DJing in front of a crowd of dancing Portuguese club-goers. She returned to the same club years later, but this time, she had her own original music to share. Bouncing between high-energy DJ mixes and hypnotic original live sets, QRTR has shared the stage with the likes of Tokimonsta, Tiga, Phantoms, Galantis, and Oliver, to name a few. QRTR has performed at some of New York's most renowned nightclubs, including The Brooklyn Mirage, Output (RIP), Good Room, Elsewhere, and Bossa Nova Civic Club. In 2018, she debuted her live setup while headlining at Brooklyn Bazaar — weaving together an hour-long live journey of remixed original tracks. While her Brooklyn home base will always be número um, QRTR has toured internationally, performing in Portuguese open air clubs and smoky Parisian lounges. Enjoy x
On the debut episode of our new Reflections series, New York staff writer Kiana Mickles analyses recent developments in local nightlife following the closure of a treasured Brooklyn venue. Resident Advisor publishes several pieces of long-form journalism per week but due to word count limitations, there's only so much information our reporters can pack in. To ensure important stories get the full coverage they deserve, we've started a new series on the RA Exchange. Reflections takes a deeper dive into the editorial content on our website by inviting writers to dissect one of their recent features. A behind-the-scenes look into the conceptualisation and research behind these articles, Reflections aims to provide updates on the highlighted topic as well as shed light on the journalistic process. For the inaugural episode, New York staff writer Kiana Mickles discusses her feature on Bossa Nova Civic Club from February this year. Ever since a fire forced the iconic venue to close indefinitely, Brooklyn nightlife hasn't been the same, she explained in a conversation with Martha Pazienti Caidan. The club was celebrated for its weekday programming but now that it's shut, Brooklynites have fewer party options on school nights, Mickles described. Bossa's fire is one of many disturbing incidents in New York nightlife this year, she continued. Recent episodes of violence and crime in various clubs have shaken artists and punters, particularly those from minority backgrounds. Mace-like fumes were reported at Nowadays, Rash was the victim of an arson attack and allegations of drink spiking at popular venues remain rampant. In this week’s episode, I sit down with DJ Cateye. She started DJing when she was in college at UT Austin, spinning at massive house parties, where she’s opened for the likes of Slim Thug, Lil’ Flip, and Pantheon. In the past year she’s brought her houston roots to New York City, where she has dived into the Bushwick music community, spinning at spots including Kinfolk, 444 Club, Bossa Nova Civic Club, and Holo, expanding her range and genre knowledge. We chat about how her DJ collective formed, finding community when moving to the city, and how she met people that have helped her along the way.
Today, I’m speaking with Gaby , who also goes by Goth Girlfriend. She is a singer/songwriter who just released her EP and is also a DJ who has been spinning for the past 4 years. She has performed at Bossa Nova Civic Club, the Knitting Factory, art galleries, and more across the city. We talk about her journey as a DJ, challenges she’s faced as a woman in the industry, and her fun pre-gig rituals. Be sure to stick around for the conversation.

AARON TRIPP (International Winners Collective / Brooklyn) Aaron Tripp (@aaron-tripp) is Brooklyn-based DJ and cofounder of International Winners Collective. He is a frequent guest on The Irradiance Cache, Distant Signal, Clock Tower Radio & Cultivated Sound. Aaron also runs the collective's shows on Bel-Air and London-based 199 radio with Dillian (Gap), who he collaborates with under the names HiPro and xxx1990. Aaron organizes the "Windows" party at Bossa Nova Civic Club and throws other events at different warehouse and DIY spots around the city, including the Evil Disco house party, which has crammed several notable DJs into a Bushwick living room. In this mix, Aaron wanted to blend different styles, clammer ambient tracks to lo-fi and classic Detroit house. Pure Immanence is the DJ duo of Nick Bazzano and Kiddo Sincere. They are residents with New York underground queer rave collective Unter, and hold a popular eponymous Wednesday night residency at Bossa Nova Civic Club that will celebrate its two-year anniversary this July. This set was performed and recorded live at Sustain-Release 2017 around a campfire in the forest during a misty sunrise from 5am to 10am on Saturday morning. Pure Immanence will perform at The Bunker Pride on June 29 at Elsewhere in a chill-out room collaboration with residents from Hypnotic Spa.
Andi (@andi80s) is a DJ and writer living in New York City. As the founder of the dark synth and industrial party, SYNTHICIDE, she has been cultivating the dark electronic scene at Brooklyn's notorious venue Bossa Nova Civic Club since 2014. Combining her underground 1980s obsession with industrial, EBM, dark techno and new beat music, Andi's specific sound is sleazy, aggressive and unarguably danceable. Since 1926, a law has been on the books in New York City that prohibits three or more people from dancing in any bar or venue that doesn't posess a notoriously hard-to-obtain “Cabaret License.” In recent months however, people from the city's nightlife community have been taken steps to change that. North Brooklyn City councilman Rafael Espinal has introduced a bill that will repeal the law.On this week's episode of the THUMP podcast, host Emilie Friedlander and Associate Editor Ezra Marcus are joined by a few of the figures at the forefront of repeal effort—including Councilman Espinal, as well as the figures from Dance Liberation Network, a group of activists and nightlife figures who've banded together under the slogan “Let NYC Dance.” Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, Bossa Nova Civic Club owner John Barclay, and Rachel Nelson—owner of three Brooklyn bars and venues, including Secret Project Robot— stop by to discuss the prejudicial history of the law and how it affects New York City businesses. Umfang aka Emma Olson is one of the most influential figures in today’s techno scene. As co-founder of the Discwoman collective the American is doing essential work promoting female DJs. Of course, her own productions and DJ sets also further the cause as they lead by example and mix raw tension with experimental eeriness. So far coming on labels like 1080p and Allergy Season, videogamemusic, and Phinery, Emma has also played seven hour sets at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh and holds a monthly residency at Technofeminism at Bossa Nova Civic Club. Next to that, the youngster just dropped her new, promising album Symbolic Use Of Light on Technicolour. Clocking in at just over an hour, Umfang’s mix for us is filled with eerie and unusual rhythms that are often hugely roomy but underpinned by solid kicks. As the pressure builds, so does the tension, and by the mid point that boils over into raw and visceral drum tracks before falling apart into a flurry of distorted sounds, percussive hits and frazzled synths. Uncompromising and packing a lot in during a short space of time, it’s an eye opening mix that leaves you in a blissful place after a busy workout.
»The events in Orlando combined with some personal situations that I have been grappling with have all gone in to make a very intense, sometimes eclectic and even violent mix that expresses a lot of the frustrations myself and people around the world are grappling with.« [Volvox, June 2016] Last autumn we came across the »Live at LeBain« recording by Brooklyn based DJ Volvox (@volvox). The energy of her jackin’ powerful acid flavored house and techno sound caught us straight away so we asked her for a contribution to our mixtape series. The past months were packed with highlights for the Discwoman (@discwoman) member: Brazil tour, Mexico tour, podcast for RBMA (@redbullmusicacademy)incl. a great interview/portrait you should read, debut appearance on Boiler Room (@platform) - quite an impressive chain of events. She also left notable marks in New York City as co-host of the monthly JACK DEPT. (@jackdeptnyc) parties at Bossa Nova Civic Club (@bossanovacivicclub) and resident DJ at UNTER, NYC’s »best after-hours party« (Grub Street Magazine). In July/August we finally get a chance to see her live in the DJ booth as she heads over to Berlin and tours the EU. _ info _ WEB _ http://djvolvox.com FB _ https://facebook.com/Volvox-105641190919/ Discwoman _ http://discwoman.com JACK DEPT. Every month Subdrive brings you our podcast showcasing a mix from an artist we respect and love. Their mixes reflect whatever they’re feeling and are inspired by at the moment. We present them without track listing so you can focus on the mix; not the next song. April’s episode is made by an old friend of ours, NYC-based music tinkerer @arq. His upbringing in gotham helped hone his skill as a master selector blending a spectrum of genres for all types of crowds all over NY from spots like The Panther Room at Output, Bossa Nova Civic Club, to tiny hidden gems in the city. His thoughtful digging and choice deep cuts also extend to his collaborations with the versatile talents of his crew, Suavehaus. His latest mix for our podcast is exactly what Spring and Summer are about: dancing late to warm, deep soulful house, laced with a little techno and disco that allude to the past.
