Japa and Ritual Worship as a Non-Dual Practice

In this next installment of our How To Do Tantrik Ritual series, we look at three very important moments in Tantrik ritual worship (namely, bhūta-śuddhi, nyāsa and gandhādi pūjā) that all serve to reinforce the idea of Advaita, non-duality in the context of worship. Over and over we affirm that the One being worshipped and the One worshipping as well as the very tools and items of the worship themselves are all One and the Same Reality: Consciousness-Bliss, Shiva. As such, we discuss how pūjā (ritual worship) and japa (mantra recitation) can act as powerful sādhanas (spiritual techniques) for truly realizing non-duality beyond mere intellectual concepts. We also talk a little bit about the importance of the sacred pilgrimage places known as śākta pīthas, and how these might be mapped unto the body in the process of nyāsa. Excitingly, we compare the rather similar mythological structures of the "Dismemberment of Osiris" episode in the Egyptian pantheon to the "Dismember of Sati" incident in the Purānas to make a point about sacred geography and the Immanence of God, following from last week's discussion on Nyāsa as a Sacred Pilgrimage Practice!A truly exciting discussion! Thank you all for coming! Jai Mā!Support the show

Main idea: A Holy God establishes his relationship with his treasured people to prepare them to worship Him. 1. God's treasured possession—19:1-6 2. God's Transcendence and Immanence—19:7-25; 20:18-21 3. God's words to live by—20:1-17 Discussion Questions: 1. The imagery of being borne on eagles' wings suggests care and protection. How have you experienced God's care and guidance in your own walk with Christ? 2. Why do you think it is important to hold both truths—God's transcendence and immanence—together in our understanding of who God is? 3. In what ways does Jesus' mediating work in the New Covenant surpass the mediation seen at Mount Sinai? 4. What does it mean to have no other gods before God? What modern "gods" or idols might compete for our attention today?

Here's a gem from our archive, a recording with Jonathan Impett — Director of Research at the Orpheus Instituut. Impett has had a MAJOR impact on Roberto and Marek, a kind of intellectual godfather to the two of us. His staggering breadth of knowledge continues to blow our minds. You can find more about Impett's work here. A number of references from the discussion include: Impett's chapter in Choreomata is awesome. Buy our book! :) Impett references Alexander Nagel and Chris Wood's Anachronic Renaissance an unbelievably ambitious tome that delves into the situatedness of art both inside and outside of the Renaissance.A few California references -- Jonathan tags in Swarm and references the composer Brian Ferneyhough. We're all Reza Negarestani fans here -- for more about computational interactionism, check out Reza's epsiode of the pod, Anil Bawa-Cavia's episode of the pod, and Reza's absolutely mondo Intelligence and Spirit. At the time of the interview, Matteo Pasquinelli's influential The Eye of the Master had not yet been released and is referenced as an upcoming release. For more information on the "waste product" -- Alain Badiou's Immanence of Truths is actually pretty forthcoming in this respect. Jonathan also references After Sound, a very timely read by G. Douglas Barrett.

Pause with me for a moment and consider the staggering truth that confronts us. The God whom we worship is not a distant deity, confined to the lofty heavens, removed from the turmoil of this world. He is not a God who merely watches from afar, unconcerned with the pain and suffering of His creation. No, our God is both omnipresent and immanent. He is everywhere at once, and He is intimately near—so close that the very breath in your lungs is a testimony to His sustaining power. Let the weight of this sink in: The Almighty, who spoke the universe into existence, is not just beyond the stars; He is also right here, in this very room, in this very moment. The Psalmist cries out in Psalm 139:7-10, "Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me." Can you fathom that? There is no corner of this universe, no depth of despair, no height of joy where He is not present. You cannot escape His presence—nor should you want to! For this omnipresent God is not just everywhere: He is with you. He knows your fears. He knows your struggles. He knows your heartaches, and He stands ready to hold you, guide you, and comfort you with His omnipotent hand. This is not a God who is indifferent or aloof. This is a God who cares. A God who is involved. A God who is near. So, let us approach this truth with awe, with trembling, and with a heart yearning to know more of this God who is both transcendent in His majesty and immanent in His grace. Let us dive deep into the riches of His omnipresence and immanence, and may our souls be forever changed by the revelation of His glorious nearness. Contact us @ 4faithfoundations@gmail.com

This episode is written with the intention of exploring the middle ground between orthodox religion and orthodox science. For those who believe that this experience we call 'life' is both deeply meaningful and meant to be explored through the veracity of freedom, sovereignty, and authentic expression. For those searching for the middle ground where science and spirituality (as well as the belief in God) cannot only coexist but can actually coalesce to support one another in an explanation of reality that upholds our existence as being deeply meaningful and profound. An explanation that suggests that our lives, our creativity, and even our seemingly mundane experiences are unique, individuated expressions of the Divine—of God Source Consciousness—itself. SourcesHaisch, B. They delve into Snell's new book, "Lost in the Chaos: Immanence, Despair, Hope," which tackles the challenges of contemporary life in Western democracies, addressing decadence, disorder, and despair. The conversation navigates the complexities of finding transcendence and hope in a society that doesn't prioritize these values. Drawing on ancient and modern philosophical insights, Snell offers a roadmap to moral reformation and spiritual renewal, embodying philosophy in its purest form—a relentless pursuit of wisdom.

The NeoLiberal Round
Should Theology Transcend Culture? Caribbean Thought Lecture 13 Excerpt, Semester 2, 2024

The NeoLiberal Round

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2024 42:26

The relationship between theology and culture is a complex and multifaceted one, with scholars and practitioners offering differing perspectives on whether theology should transcend culture or be deeply embedded within it (Transcendence Vs the Immanence of God and theology). To address this question, it is essential to define theology and culture and explore their interplay in both historical and contemporary contexts. Theology, at its core, is the study of the divine, religious beliefs, and the nature of the divine being or beings. It encompasses doctrines, rituals, ethics, and interpretations of sacred texts within various religious traditions. Culture, on the other hand, refers to the shared beliefs, values, customs, and practices of a particular group of people, often shaped by factors such as history, geography, language, and social structures. Throughout history, theology and culture have been intertwined, influencing and shaping each other in profound ways. Religious beliefs and practices are often deeply embedded within cultural contexts, reflecting the values, norms, and traditions of a society. Conversely, theology has also played a role in shaping culture, providing frameworks for understanding the world, guiding ethical behavior, and fostering community cohesion. However, the question of whether theology should transcend culture raises important considerations regarding the universality of religious truth claims and the diversity of human experiences and perspectives. Proponents of the transcendence of theology argue that religious truths are universal and transcendent, applicable to all people regardless of cultural context. They posit that theology should provide timeless principles and moral guidance that are not bound by cultural limitations. On the other hand, advocates for the embeddedness of theology within culture emphasize the importance of contextualization and cultural relevance in religious practice and interpretation. They argue that theology must be understood and expressed within the cultural frameworks of particular communities, taking into account their unique histories, languages, and worldviews. This approach acknowledges the diversity of human experiences and the dynamic nature of culture, allowing theology to evolve and adapt to changing social contexts. Furthermore, the transcendence of theology over culture can lead to the imposition of dominant cultural norms and values onto marginalized communities, perpetuating systems of power and inequality. Embracing cultural diversity within theology fosters inclusivity, allowing for the voices and perspectives of marginalized groups to be heard and valued within religious discourse. In conclusion, the relationship between theology and culture is a dynamic and complex one, with both perspectives offering valuable insights into the nature of religious belief and practice. While some argue for the transcendence of theology over culture, emphasizing universal truths and principles, others advocate for the embeddedness of theology within culture, acknowledging the diversity of human experiences and the importance of cultural context. Ultimately, the challenge lies in finding a balance between these perspectives, recognizing the universality of religious truths while respecting the diversity of cultural expressions and interpretations. How is God present in and for His creation? Traditionally, that has been addressed through Christological categories. Our theologian for this episode, Wolfhart Pannenberg, presses us to consider that it is God's Spirit who is immanent (in, with, for, to) regarding creation. What does that look like? Is it biblically based? We also examine Pannenberg for his eschatological (end times) perspectives on Holy Spirit. Pannenberg was an intersting and courageous man; he stood for objective truth all-the-while he taught inside of ardently secular German universities. At the show's beginning I talk about a recent ban of Hillsdale College, share my reflections on the 2024 total solar eclipse, and reflect on what a Holy Spirit-driven earth care might look like compared to today's religious Green movement.

When Christ the King was born in Bethlehem, the Magi arrived from the East with gifts guided by a Star on high, but Herod was troubled and mowed down the children like wheat; for he lamented that his power would soon be destroyed.

Romans 8:12 - 27So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Luke 1: 46 - 55And Mary said,“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”Sermon Questions:1.     Where are the places in your life that you feel like a “loser”?  Where do you assume God doesn't see you, or is displeased with you?2.     Can you accept that if God saw Mary, he sees you too?3.     Who are the people you choose not to “see”?4.     Can you believe that God particularly meets you in your places of shame and lowliness?5.     What great things can God do through you, with Jesus alive in you?

Immanuel, God with us. Throughout the story of Scripture, we learn that God is transcendent, so infinitely beyond us. And yet, we also see that He is immanent. The God of all creation came to live beside us, entering our human experience. Christmas is the magnificent culmination of these two characteristics of God. Christmas tells […]

In this lecture, we discuss “Tantrik Christianity”, that is, elements of Tantra like1. guruparamparā (lineage based transmission), 2. ritual worship (pūjā)3. emphasis on mantra repetition (japa)4. profileration of deities/icons5. emphasis on direct, personal experience of the Divine6. the Immanence of God etc. that are also present in Christianity to make the case that Tantra is a spiritual approach not exclusive to any one cultural but is founded upon universal spiritual principles that are equally present in every tradition! I also want to point out how Jesus Christ as an Incarntion is murti/vigraha, the Tantrik term for the embodied, immanent aspect of the Transcendent Divine which can be used as a doorway to the Absolute, who is in-and-of-itsef, that same Absolute manifest. Since December is a time when in our community we turn or fervor towards Shakti in the form of Christ and Mother Mary, I pray this lecture will delight you! Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public.
