In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore how the nervous system impacts fat loss and how certain behaviors and supplements can accelerate fat burning. I explain how non-exercise movements like fidgeting and shivering trigger adrenaline to boost fat metabolism. I also examine the impact of exercise intensity and fasted workouts on fat burning, and how supplements such as caffeine, GLP-1 and berberine can further support fat loss. These science-based tools go beyond traditional calorie counting to enhance metabolism and improve body composition. Huberman Lab Essentials are short episodes (approximately 30 minutes) focused on essential science and protocol takeaways from past Huberman Lab episodes. Essentials will be released every Thursday, and our full-length episodes will still be released every Monday. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com.

Natural Ways to Boost GLP-1

The Metabolic Classroom

For this week's Metabolic Classroom lecture, Dr. Bikman focuses on natural ways to boost GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1), a powerful gut hormone involved in appetite control, blood sugar regulation, and metabolic health.Ben begins by explaining that GLP-1 is secreted in response to food intake, influencing glucagon suppression, slowing gastric emptying, and activating satiety centers in the brain. However, research shows that individuals with obesity tend to have a blunted GLP-1 response, particularly after consuming carbohydrates. This means that people with obesity may not experience the same level of fullness and appetite regulation, which can contribute to overeating.Dr. Bikman then discusses concerns with GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. While they effectively promote weight loss, they also come with significant downsides, including loss of lean mass (up to 40% of total weight lost), increased mental health risks (depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts), and a return of sweet cravings over time. Additionally, 70% of people discontinue these drugs within two years, often regaining weight—primarily as fat—due to muscle loss during treatment. He then presents natural methods to enhance GLP-1 production without drugs. His lab at BYU found that Yerba Mate significantly increases GLP-1 by 40-50%, likely due to its ferulic acid content and bitter taste receptors that also reduce sweet cravings. Allulose, a rare sugar, has also been shown to stimulate GLP-1 and improve glucose control, even in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Other natural boosters include a low-carbohydrate, protein-rich diet, which triples GLP-1 levels compared to a low-fat diet, collagen peptides, which enhance GLP-1 secretion and insulin sensitivity, and quality sleep, since poor sleep is linked to impaired GLP-1 signaling and increased hunger.Dr. Bikman concludes by emphasizing that leveraging diet and lifestyle changes is the most effective and sustainable way to improve GLP-1 levels, regulate appetite, and support long-term metabolic health. While GLP-1 medications may serve a purpose, particularly for those struggling with carbohydrate cravings, they come with risks that should not be ignored. Instead, strategies such as Yerba Mate, allulose, low-carb diets, collagen peptides, and better sleep can provide natural, lasting benefits without side effects.Show Notes/References:For complete show notes and references referred to in this episode, we invite you to become a Ben Bikman Insider subscriber. Folch discusses who drinks mate, and why, and whether this earthier caffeinated drink with its promise of a different buzz and a more authentic, spiritual connection to place can find a market niche beyond South America. Folch traces yerba mate's odysseys across the globe, from South America to the Middle East and North America. She discovers that mate inspired the world's first written tango, powered early Jesuit and German nationalist utopias, ignited one of modern history's most devastating wars, and fueled Catholic conspiracies. And, Folch reports, mate is currently starring in puppet shows put on by Syrian dissidents. By tracing yerba mate production and consumption as they change over time and place, from precolonial Indigenous beginnings to the present, Folch unravels the processes of commodification and their countervailing forces to show how accidents of botany intersect with political economic systems and personal taste. Brewed from the dried leaves and tender shoots of an evergreen tree native to South America, yerba mate gives its drinkers the jolt of liquid effervescence many of us get from coffee or tea. In Argentina, southern "gaúcho" Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, mate is the stimulating brew of choice, famously quaffed by the Argentine national football team en route to its 2022 FIFA World Cup victory.  In The Book of Yerba Mate: A Stimulating History (Princeton UP, 2024), Christine Folch offers a wide-ranging exploration of the world's third-most popular naturally stimulating beverage. The stories behind the caffeinated infusions we prefer, she finds, are nothing less than the story of how the modern world is put together.

Do you like tea? Sure, maybe. But have you ever tried (or seen someone else try) yerba mate? Mate goes beyond just a drink. It goes beyond the English tea time or that of other cultures. It's something which is almost... spiritual, you know?Having started as a tradition among the Guarani people and then adopted by Spanish colonizers, this drink has spread across the world and is now seen consumed by European athletes, Hollywood artists, and even... U.S. presidents?!The story behind mate is quite a fascinating and interesting one, and it's a story we dive into in our penultimate episode of the third season of the Learn Spanish with Stories podcast! Enjoy the episode, and make sure to prepare your favorite drink before diving in!Transcript of this episode is available at: https://podcast.lingomastery.com/listen/1269

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Diego Bohórquez, PhD, professor of medicine and neurobiology at Duke University and a pioneering researcher into how we use our ‘gut sense.' He describes how your gut communicates to your brain and the rest of your body through hormones and neural connections to shape your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. He explains how your gut senses a range of features such as temperature, pH, the macro- and micronutrients in our foods, and much more and signals that information to the brain to affect our food preferences, aversions, and cravings. Dr. Bohórquez describes his early life in the Amazon jungle and how exposure to traditional agriculture inspired his unique expertise combining nutrition, gastrointestinal physiology, and neuroscience. We discuss how the gut and brain integrate sensory cues, leading to our intuitive “gut sense” about food, people, and situations. This episode provides a scientific perspective into your gut sense to help you make better food choices and, indeed, to support better decision-making in all of life. He emphasizes the crucial role of grassroots efforts like word-of-mouth endorsements and community events in building a loyal customer base. Nicolas shares his journey of self-funding, supplemented later by keen investors, which allowed the brand to foster a robust direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales model. In developing Mateina's signature non-carbonated yerba mate beverage, he underscores the meticulous year-and-a-half-long process of trial and error with suppliers to fine-tune the recipe. Moving into the future, Nicolas envisions continuing to innovate and potentially expand Mateina's retail footprint.Episode brought to you by More StaffingJoin 15k founders and marketers & get our pod highlights delivered directly to your inbox with the DTC Pod Newsletter! On this episode of DTC Pod, we cover:1. His trajectory changed after a casual conversation with two web designers who had turned the coffee shop into a makeshift office. Wilkinson, napkin math in hand and enamored by the potential profits and lifestyle, took the bus to the local bookstore and bought a book on web design. Soon enough, he picked up his first local client for $500.“I ran the numbers in my head, and I realized that these guys were making a fortune,” remembers Wilkinson. “I want to be the guy drinking the espresso, not the guy making it.” Flash-forward twenty years, Andrew stands at the helm of Tiny, a publicly traded conglomerate of 40+ diverse businesses that span both the digital and physical realms, from social networks like LetterBox and Dribble to the iconic Aeropress coffee maker and, recently, Yerba Mate brand Mateina with Andrew Huberman. How exactly did Andrew Wilkinson go from espresso guy to running an empire?  Listen to this episode to find out. Discover Maka, the Ready to Drink Wheatgrass Superfood Functional Beverage, perfect for food enthusiasts. Maka is more than just a drink; it's a Public Benefit Corporation committed to donating 1% of its proceeds to support clean water initiatives, such as Surf Rider and the Nature Conservancy. This unique beverage combines Wheatgrass with Yerba Mate and its cousin, Guayusa, creating a truly exceptional blend. While educating consumers about Wheatgrass can be challenging, Maka boasts an impressive 99% conversion rate once people sample it. With only 10 grams of sugar from fruit juice and Blue Agave, Maka stands out by avoiding Stevia or Monk fruit additives. Loaded with essential nutrients like Vitamin A and antioxidants, Maka contains just 90 milligrams of caffeine, a far cry from the 240 milligrams found in a medium Starbucks coffee. Available at Sprouts now, Maka has plans for a nationwide rollout in 2023 and has recently made its debut at Gelsons and Bristol Farms in Southern California. When it comes to sampling, Maka's ambassadors are incredibly effective, often selling 7-12 cans per session, with some achieving an impressive 50 cans sold. The brand is actively expanding its sampling team, seeking out trusted ambassadors who share a genuine passion for Maka's product and can represent it authentically. One of their main challenges is finding natural brand ambassadors who align with their values and mission. Maka's marketing strategy has evolved to prioritize face-to-face demos over top-of-the-funnel marketing and social advertising. Looking forward, their innovation plan includes exploring new and exciting flavors to expand their product line. If you do not want the side effects or the high cost of weight loss drugs like Ozempic, this episode is for you!!  In this episode of The Chalene Show podcast, Chalene Johnson weighs the pros and cons of FDA-approved weight loss drugs like Ozempic versus natural alternatives like Berberine. If you're wary of these pharmaceutical solutions, there's good news! Natural alternatives like Berberine have similar glucose-regulating effects but without the side effects of synthetic drugs. Other supplements to consider for natural weight loss and better glucose management include Yerba Mate Tea and Magnesium. Yerba Mate can increase the hormone GLP-1 naturally, aiding in appetite suppression. Magnesium is critical for insulin sensitivity and many other bodily functions; yet, it's often overlooked, especially in people over 40. A balanced diet rich in protein, complex carbs, and soluble fiber can also regulate your blood sugar and weight naturally. For those looking for an active approach, don't overlook the benefits of walking and weight training. These exercises not only improve insulin sensitivity but also help build muscle, which in turn boosts your metabolism. For a safer, potentially more effective approach to weight loss and diabetes management, tune in. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes. In this episode, I explain how to use caffeine to enhance mental and physical health and performance, including the optimal dosages and intake schedules for caffeine. I explain how caffeine powerfully reinforces the consumption of certain foods and drinks—thereby increasing how much we like their tastes and seek them out. I discuss the mechanisms by which caffeine increases focus, alertness and mood and reduces sleepiness. I also explain many practical tools for caffeine use, including delaying caffeine intake after waking, intermittent caffeine use, during fasting, before and during exercise, and the use of theanine to curb jitters caused by caffeine. I also discuss the positive effects of caffeine on overall health and longevity and address several myths about caffeine. Since caffeine is one of the most commonly used substances (more than 90% of adults use caffeine daily!), this episode provides actionable tips for adjusting caffeine consumption to positively impact performance and health, including sleep. In the mid-1990's most Americans had probably never even heard of yerba mate, but when David Karr and Chris Mann were first introduced to the South American drink, they were hooked. Together with three other friends, they decided to launch a company that would bring mate to the American market. Based in San Luis Obispo, California, the co-founders of Guayakí Yerba Mate spent years living in a van and driving all over the country, brewing up free samples for consumers, and convincing natural food stores to sell their product. It would take almost 15 years of grinding away before the company turned a significant profit, but the founders were powered by a mission to do business in a way that supports communities and the environment. Today, Guayakí has annual revenue of over $100 million, and their canned and bottled beverages are available all across the U.S.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
